Mikaela really gives a lot of thought to her answers, and has a lot to say about managing pressure and expectations, staying true to yourself, and even how media hype created some tension between her and Lindsey. very cool interview, I hope whenever she retires from FIS she works with young athletes, she'd be great as a mentor!
I like the way she handled the LV question. I hate when the media fabricates tension where there is none. Since MS has been on the world cup circuit, LV was totally a speed racer. MS is primarily a tech racer, although the last 2 seasons she has successfully added a few speed races. MS seems to have a natural talent for skiing and coupled with disciplined training, she is phenomenal. LV is gritty, a fighter. That grit along with disciplined training made her great. Their commonality is the long hours in the gym and ability to quickly learn the nuances of a course to have the best run on race day. Being on the same team doesn't make the all the players friends. These 2 aren't friends, but they are respectful.
A most gracious and well-spoken ambassador of the sport. Highly competitive with respect to her own contribution and level of achievement while still congenial and non-adversarial by nature. No suggestion of pretense, or hubris which will serve her well as she is obviously the primary architect of her own career's trajectory. The thing that struck me most was her grasp of each and every component of her realm with a maturity unencumbered by any observable tendency to compromise her dignity, or compassionate nature. She would be successful in any endeavor based so solidly-anchored in thoughtful & considerate analysis. A multi-faceted young woman with wisdom beyond her years. Mike Kirwan - Kenmore, Wa
Alpine ski racing at World Cup level is one of the most difficult sports with insane logistics. Not enough to be physically and mentally ready every time. The athletes must constantly deal with bad weather, high altitude, new snow-ice conditions.Must have the right equipment, the right prep; every run, for every race. Mikaela have it all dialed in now.Keep it going young lady!
What I like about Mikaela is that she is Humble and Classy!! I mean you can tell that she is Confident but she Isn't Cocky and THAT is Refreshing!! xoxo
Lindsey brought so much more personality than shiffrin. She has lost about 3 seasons because of injuries. Moreover, during the time of lindsey vonn there were more competitors (maze, fenninger, höfl-riesch, lara gut and so on)
@@kkeelty64 shiffrin is always crying when losing and making things up. For example: saying that vlhova is stalking her or that the red course in the parallel event was slower 😂😂
@@cro2018 Nearly half of Stenmark's WC victories came in slalom and he NEVER won a downhill race - does that somehow diminish his accomplishments? Schiffin is CRUSHING it in all disciplines.
Impressive maturity and grounding for any athlete or person. This is certainly due to her great parents, raising her as a grateful productive athlete, not a typical vacuous star. We all have something to learn from this great example. The last time i got this feeling was listening to Tim Tebow, who's grounding is clearly faith based.
As of this week she added three more World Championships medals and is now tied All time! And she’s favorite to win her best event the slalom in a few days. She will be the greatest skier ever and she’s only 25 yo!
The thing with racing, l believe.......Is it is an outdoor discipline. No one can legislate the weather conditions, they are finite and this effects everything. Especially when winning or losing is in hundredths of a second. So there is a measure of good fortune for each run.
I have fortunate to see her a few times at FIS races and she is an incredible skier. I hope she does not chase the DH to much as it just never ends well. Crashing at 75 plus never ends well. This is selfish wish but I just want her to keep racing, that will not happen if she DH's to much. She is the GOAT and soon she will break all the records.
I totally agree re DH, Scott. I'm not a meticulous student of the World Cup, but every dominant speed skier I'm familiar with has blown out a knee at least once, often worse. It WILL happen, as you say. DH/SuperG competitors who remain healthy are often consistent but mid-range talents in the discipline. Probably because they aren't nuts--in the lack of self-preservation sense. (I've skied for 50+ years; solid recreational. Like any skier, I've taken risks. But the WC speed events are like NFL football, in that at any second on any play, your season could be over. They're made of much sterner stuff than I am.) Shiffrin digs SuperG and has fine DH chops. I'd guess she'll run SuperG next season and selected DHs on more forgiving hills. She's a hardcore competitor, which makes her delightful personality, intelligent introspection, and humility so appealing. But she's a gifted athlete exploring her gift, expanding her capabilities. Hopefully when she discovers a limit it'll be with time to pull out of a tuck, skid a hard slowing turn, or to even ski out to avoid disaster. Racers probably regularly ease off; spectators always notice when they should have. Mikaela's DH/SG participation would further define her as the greatest WC skier ever, but yes, chances are it would come at a painful cost. Sorry to babble. I'm going crazy indoors! Gotta get out onto the slopes. This year's gonna be BETTER for everyone!!! Stay safe.
@@polcommwatcher You are not alone. I have had a season pass for over twenty years to Killington Vt. and skiing is more than just a sport for me its a way of life. After last year I decided not to get a pass because of the pandemic. Bad call as they have not closed but now a day ticket cost around 130.00 or so. Not much skiing this year and I am starting to lose my mind. Hang in there this too shall pass. Take care.
@@polcommwatcher "DH/SuperG competitors who remain healthy are often consistent but mid-range talents in the discipline." .... well, the best DH racer since the alpine skiing world cup was established in 1967 was Franz Klammer, and as far as I remember he was never injured during his 13 year carrer (1972 - 1985)
Vonn won 43 DH. 43! That alone makes her the greatest ever. I don’t care how many SL or GS you win. 203’s at 80 mph is several orders of magnitude more difficult and dangerous.

The only reason of her success it that she is better than all the others because she has more trained than the others. She is stronger!
