hello, nice video congratulations. I wanted to ask you something: "Does battery life decrease with windows, compared to Steamos, or not"? A friend of mine encountered this problem with The Witcher 3, because on Windows 11 it has 50 minutes of playtime, instead with SteamOs it reached 90 minutes / 1 hour of play, as is possible? For your opinion is better install Windows 11 pro or i stay with SteamOs?
the problem with steam os is that anticheat games required workaround, luckily i dont play those game except genshin impact and fallguys which actually supported if you know how to solve that...... other than that non steam games need install runtime maybe complicated sometimes, but so far, it really is working fine for me as long as i have time to tinkering with it, but steam os game mode is really neat stuff, if we have same thing in windows and good optimization in windows i would switch to windows
I would say probably go with SteamOS if you are comfortable with it and are happy with the games you are able to play on it. I would ONLY install Windows if you want to play games not compatible with SteamOS. Also for the battery life question, it really isn't much worse than SteamOS but you do get a lot more battery saving functionality with SteamOS.
@@zeepeezy I honestly don't want to buy games from steam, but I prefer to download and play them for free. My intent was this. I was planning on downloading some emulators as well. I wanted to install windows 11 pro on my steam deck, especially since I've always used windows. I've never used the linux operating system. The thing that scares me is the battery drain with windows. This is the only reason that is blocking me from switching to windows currently.
@@jhonnym97 I understand. I honestly cannot say I have any issues with my battery life on Windows. It has been pretty acceptable (I play 1-2 hours at a time MAX). This does not mean you will have the same results depending on what you are doing though, I would definitely recommend asking around some more to get some more feedback on that.
I've heard Dbrand offers the screen protector to get. Supposedly it works with the touch screen nicely. Can't speak to this myself because I don't have a steam deck yet, but this is what I heard.
I own a Dbrand protection traveler protection kit. Yes, it's well worth it! Get the screen protector. I have no problems with the touchscreen in any area!
I just want to play mw2 on my steam deck. If I download Windows do I have to launch from battlenet or can I just launch from steam? Also with th dual boot OS, is windows and steam OS on your internal storage? What's the difference of having windows on a SD card? Thanks in advance! I'm not great with computers and software but I have some experience but have been scared to get windows but I wanna play cod so bad lol
Great video, although I disagree with you here - Windows on Steam Deck is a mess! Besides, you should definitely get Steam Deck Tools, which would enable many bespoke features and native controller support. Aside from the fact that I recommend EVERYBODY to use SteamOS due to crucial things, you'll never get on Windows, such as pre-compiled Shaders, another major thing to mention though, which also won't work with Windows: I would highly recommend learning about the "Golden 40" that leverages the 40Hz capabilities of the Deck's display. Inevitably, you'll often end up worrying if a recent release can run at 60FPS on there. The Golden 40 would massively help here: Due to the fact you can lower the panel's refresh rate to 40Hz through the Quick Action Menu, you are able to go for 40FPS instead of 30. Why you may ask? Despite a 10FPS additional payload to the Deck's graphics APU, 40 FPS is right in the middle between 30 and 60 FPS in terms of frame pacing - meaning a nearly-60 FPS experience. Try it out! If you want to see this in action, feel free to give an older video of mine a shot, where I tried to explain this comprehensively. Cheers!
I've been seeing that Handheld companion fixes alot of the issues that Windows has on the Deck. I'm still waiting a while because I can already play Xbox Cloud Gamjng and my emulators are working, but they're slowly but sure fixing windows for the Deck.
I actually did mention Steam Deck Tools, I need to add that to the description. I do agree Windows has its downsides, but I love having the option for SteamOS or Windows at any given moment.
Btw, what is the best way to play my windows games on the SD? I have a huge library there and I just got mine SD today, but I don't know what to do next and how to manage that, I'm very excited tho ^_^
The Handheld Companion, as Ty Young mentioned, is quickly closing the gap on the items you shared. It is an app that you install that provides controller support, mappable buttons, action menu, refresh rate changes (including the 40Hz capability), and overlays. It's still rough around the edges, but it's progressing nicely. Ever since Valve introduced the SteamOS UI through the Steam Beta client on Windows, I have an almost identical experience as that from SteamOS. As a tinkerer, I love that there are options out there for all of us with a growing number of support growing in all camps, Windows included!
when using dualboot, are u able to join the storage for both os? I plan to install steam(actual steam desktop) on the windows os but of course don't want to duplicate the installed games already in steamOS. basically i just want access on my steam games on both OS but don't want to double install them on each
I would definitely recommend adding partitions to both the internal and SD storage to separate the OSes. I have about 1/2 of my internal storage partitioned for SteamOS and the other 1/2 for Windows. Same goes for the SD card.
This is technically possible if you set them up with the same file system. I saw a thread on Reddit about it awhile back. Might be worth looking into if you really want to, but tbh it’s probably not worth the hassle and most games run on Steam OS anyway. You’ll probably only have a few games which REQUIRE windows. In which case I would just install those to your windows partition and boot everything else via steam OS. For me, All I have installed on Windows is COD.
