Everybody needs a friend like Austin 😃
hahaha!
This is one of the most genuinely helpful how-to's I've ever seen. I love all the detail. A lot of people probably don't realize that some of the best bladers in the world still ask a homie for a shoulder from time to time.
Yep, sometimes you just want to see how fast the rail is going to be before you commit to jumping on it at any certain speed. I've jumped on rails that looked like they would slide and you just stick and go flying forward head first. Some materials can be deceiving.
This is good advice for people getting started with handrails. Big ups, Billy.
Still one of a kind as far as I can tell
where has this video been my whole life?? now I can finally start learning rails! amazing guys!
we hope this helps, go get it!
This is BY FAR the best advice I have ever come across!!!!!
This is the best break down I’ve ever seen.
This is what is needed. Not industry gossip, even though we like that too, but if a admired pro gives us tips on how they got this or that, I would be tuned in. I would like to see Jeff Stockwell talk about park flow. Collin Kelso address how to skate with style. Farmer on the secrets of negative tricks. Can you imagine that world?
Billy’s got a sick style 🤙🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻
A “Bauer Box” 😬 Taking it back to the NISS days!
Super juiced you're making videos like this. I feel like the youtube space doesn't have enough of this style of content from recognizable people. Some of the most popular skating videos on youtube are based around the basics of skating, because most of the new people don't know where else to search. It's good to see reputable people from blade culture in the youtube mix.
Rail is so low. Perfect for learning
Even the simplest soul grind is steezed out. Fish is the man!!!
This is dope! real life problems.
I remember hand planting the rail in the Brooklyn banks... Im pretty sure that rail doesn't exist anymore. Great advice!!!
Billy O'Neil with gray hair in a Bacemint shirt, making his own tutorial vid, roughly around the same time he launched his skate brand "Mesmer". It just shows me how much has changed, and how we don't need sponsors anymore. People are just doing their own thing.
Replace the handrail with playground slides and that was 1996 for me🙌
haha we all did that. definitely a good time
Thanks for this. So glad I am not alone in this. I STILL experience fear whenever approaching rails even thought I've done a fair share. I thought I was just weak or something for still having this general fear. Thanks for showing us this.
Well you can really hurt yourself regardless of how much experience you have in the bank, so I think it's just natural.
Nice tip! 🔥
You been following me around our something? Handrails don't stand a chance now thanks Billy 💪
More of these please! This is great and the kind of stuff we need to grow the sport! Thank you!
I used the same do-more-and-more-of-it approach myself
I agree with that. It's doing the first attempt. After that it's like not so bad. My Dad used to say when you swim in cold seawater for example (getting your 'worst' over by jumping in initially, then your body is used to the temp). Just adding to, because Billy is spot on here and the hand onto the rail is one I forgot that I will be using again as I am having fun getting clips now.
Awesome advice
Dude yes please make more of these rail videos I've been so close yet so far from hitting rails it just drives me mental...
great stuff Billy
One advantage with handrails over flats is you don't have to charge at the rail to get all your switches at speed. you can do that nice crouch and pop up shown here..
Oh wow man this is helpful, thanks.
That makes so much sense to test it out and hold on to someone and grind it from the lower part. When i started i would just jump on the thing like a psycho HAHAHAHA. That was back in my days though, no more aggressive skating for me. Still love to skate though.
This is just what I needed right now and coming from one of the best, thanks JS.
go send it!
My first hand rail i jumped on was steep, not very high and pretty short, on the other side of the rail was soft lawn, so it was easier for me to fully commit to jump on the rail because jumping to far wasn't really dangerous.
after this i do my first 450 shifty on a handryl after 14 years
Yo let’s go Billy
This is awesome! More street tutorials please 👌
we have more on our patreon page!
Also become comfortable with running down stairs with you’re skates on.
This is great Billy. Wish I had this when I was a kid. I learned by literally skating up to the rail and jumping and slapping my skate against it to boost my confidence.
This was really really good.
You know someone came up in the 90s when they refer to it as a ‘Bauer Box’
This is such an awesome video we need more videos like this this is a good tutorial because I'm trying to teach my kids about how you're starting handrails and this is perfect by the way creates original frames Rock
Billy you’ve got a fan in me brother that is a great video

Friends: if you don’t have any of those things- LOL 😂
goat.
More of this please
for sure mr oneil that is definitely it. thank you for being there and rollerblading man. thanks a bunch! masala! "lets go vegan and rollerblade" from saint california!
I'd make more of these,..and go into specific tricks, like the dynamics of like a true top porn, etc..more of the not so basic stuff though, it would probably do well, like a how to street, compared to on a mini, rock on!🤘
we do that in our other videos on our patreon page
Thanks bruv I've been scared of the inclined rails.
So good Job
Top notch advice
This was a great breakdown and I loved the slow motion zoomed in on the positioning too!
SUPER HELPFUL VID
Great video! inspiring and truly educational! Didn't know what to expect but the advice seems very helpful! Can't wait to work my way up to Handrails! Thanks Billy~
thank you 👍
Really good explanation, if I had this in my time for sure I be able to learn faster and not have afraid of rails. 💪👊
Hey Billy, thanks for this I really wish I had this in high school when I was skating. I don’t think this is the best metaphor but is riding fast in the right situations better than approaching a rail slowly, like the added speed helps to get higher in jumps and you tend to slide out more instead of taking impact over a smaller area? I think there is probably way more nuance than this, I’m totally open to hearing everyone’s thoughts on this.
awesome video
Awesome tutorial thanks a lot! give us more please 🙏
Legend!!!👽🙌🏻
Great content. But get billy some freaken eye drops next time. Lol
We all need a shoulder to rail on sometimes
At the end of the day all those tips dont mean jack if you ain't ready to send it!
Some Free Advice SFA, we used to have to buy the vhs before streaming internet
You're the best
like ur R2D2 color style skates 🙂
This is all good, this is how I learnt. Until you sack yourself or flip over the rail onto your face, hitting you shins, thigh, wrists, knees etc on the way down. Its all fun until you get hurt badly and lose weeks of confidence that you built up...
Thats how we learn
cheers 😎🤙🏽
I also feel the jump over, touch the rail, with controlled landing parrallel to the stairs is good practice as well, and practices your abort moves.
That only works if you can squash your tricks. When I first started squashing was very hard for me.
Handing up to a rail is harder than doing a rail. Get good at p rails, then go to bigger p rails, then decent size park rails, then handrails. Have a safety trick and learn how to fall. Process...
Billy sounds like a Californian now lol he used to have such a thick NYC accent haha
How bout true fish lol 😂 u know the deals on that one ☝️
🖤🖤
Use shin Garda
that's a writing utensil hand plethora ; one foot no sock on railing commissioner park signature black bleach swoosh didn't I say that
red sock tube also just because
How did you get your skates like that?
👍🏾👍🏾💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾
Has anybody played jet set radio
👌
Fuck yeah haha
Rails are afraid of billy
Sonic Adventure 2
You know Billy is lying at 1:24
Fruit booting will never be cool. Buy a skateboard.
