- The music of Greece is as diverse and celebrated as its history. Greek music separates into two parts: Greek traditional music and Byzantine music, with more eastern sounds. These compositions have existed for millennia: they originated in the Byzantine period and Greek antiquity; there is a continuous development which appears in the language, the rhythm, the structure and the melody. Music is a significant aspect of Hellenic culture, both within Greece and in the diaspora. Greek musical history extends far back into ancient Greece, since music was a major part of ancient Greek theater. Later influences from the Roman Empire, Eastern Europe and the Byzantine Empire changed the form and style of Greek music. Greek folk traditions are said to derive from the music played by ancient Greeks. There are said to be two musical movements in Greek folk music: Acritic songs and Klephtic songs. Akritic music comes from the 9th century akrites, or border guards of the Byzantine Empire. Following the end of the Byzantine period, klephtic music arose before the Greek Revolution, developed among the kleftes, warriors who fought against the Ottoman Empire. Klephtic music is monophonic and uses no harmonic accompaniment.
Dhimotika tragoudhia are accompanied by clarinets, guitars, tambourines and violins, and include dance music forms like syrtó, kalamatianó, tsámiko and hasaposérviko, as well as vocal music like kléftiko. Greek folk music is found all throughout Greece, Cyprus and several regions of Turkey. The island of Cyprus and several regions of Turkey are home to long-standing communities of Greeks in Turkey with their own unique styles of music. Nisiotika is a general term denoting folk songs from the Greek islands, especially the Aegean Islands. Ikariótikos is a traditional type of dance, and also the name of its accompanying type of singing, originating in the Aegean island of Ikaria. The Cretan lyra is the dominant folk instrument on the island of Creta; it is a three-stringed bowed instrument similar to the Byzantine Lyra. It is often accompanied with laouto (laoúto), which is similar to both an oud and a lute. The violin is used also in Cretan music.

Why Folk music is so beautiful
because it feels like a very close family´ feast I guess. there is something unique to folkloric tradition that gets more intense as more native a people lived. It has something unguilty, almost childish, in a peaceful sense. Like within a familiy that keeps bad things away from their dearest. and folklore is basically a soure of energy. within their dances, they share their powers equally. if you ever experienced a folk. dance you will know what I mean... this style of music, originates in the epirus mountains, of todays Greece and albania. in Antiquity Epiros were two, three similar tribes that formed a small kingdom later, but they never developed as the City states, that formed european civilisation.they never where big players. The epirotes where decentralized all the time, they did not built huge cities.. and i think one can hear it in their music too. its character is very peaceful, slow, dreamful.. not as other folk musics from areas that saw many fights and Kings scome and go that are nearby, that goe faster, more agressive, almost warlike. their dances also look like a big huge hug, while people from other regions dance even with knives, and ammunition belts around their chests, wearing black colours that imply sorrow. But when modern Greece was formed as a independent country. it where the people of epiros that peaked out as the fighters, what they never really have been in history.Even after they where chased out of their mountain villages, they fled over the ionian isles and managed to succesfully fight with guerilla tactics what finally led to the independence of Greece today, they where a cultural mix of albanian and greek back then. nationality is not really a criteria, when it comes to identify folklore..just because some traditions and customs are older than any idea of Nationality, states et cetera. the more native, the clearer that idea gets...

For the people who say that Greek music has oriental influences.. Greece ruled for years the east and classic oriental comes from byzantine times..
why is greek culture so different of western culture knowing that its roots are greece and ancient hellenistic world
@@bestroller7461 Well maybe this happens because even ancient Greeks had not relations with the west...Think about the Greek cities in minor Asia (anatolia) or the Greek empires( Alexander the Great, Byzantium) were all to east.. Moreover, ancient Greeks had relations with Egyptians, Perses and only Roman to the west.. Few years ago there were so many Greeks lived in Today's Turkey.. Music, food, lifestyle is more east/Mediterranean than classic European.. Do not forget that Greece is the crossride of Europe Asia and Africa. And the mix of East and West.. Well the politic system in ancient Greece was very good so West took it and now is using it..
@@ral.9269 thanks so much for the information yes i can say that hellenistic culture flourished among middle east for centries exemple alexandria is founded by alexander the great also almost of levant countries were occupied by greeks during byzantine era that's why assyrians are orthodox thanks so much greeks are very good people

Love from India
Beautiful music. It is similar the turkish and the Middle East songs (although the Greek is from the Indo-European family, the Turk of the Altaic family and the Arab is Afro-Semitic family). My native language is Brazilian-Portuguese.
i doubt that you have ever listened any Middle eastern song (or Turkish song) in your life. They have quite different sounds, even though the specific songs certainly sound nothing like Brazilian or Portuguese, which may gives you the wrong impression that they sound like middle eastern
Ours dont same never anythings by greeces
A part that i disagree is that even though these scales are 100% Balkan and common only in Northwestern Greece (all songs are from grevena) and sound quite different from music of other regions which have more mediterranean and "western" sounds, it has a title "folk Greek music" and it has Santorini in the Background, when this music would be completely alien to Santorini
We have the same tones in Albania Kosovo and Macedonia. Literally

I concur. If I remember my history lessons properly, it was not until the industrialized era that Greece ceased being the primary gateway between the realms. And even after, there were the Orient Express et cetera.
PetrosB4 Turkey is in the middle of the 3 continents too
You are full of it ... Shit that is, You know nothing, The Arabs and the Otomans (Now turks) took music lessons from Greeks. So the Touch is not oriental it is GREEK TOUCH.
READ HISTORY. PYTHAGORAS MADE MATH OUT OF MUSIC (AND MUSIC OUT OF MATH) 2500 YEARS AGO !
@PetrosB4 stop repeating the same nonsenses in every single comment, ypu can't change reality just because your ancestors came from asia minor
Neither Greeks have anything to do with middle east nor middle easterners who are 2000 years older than Greeks really adopted anything from Greeks
And during ottomans Greeks felt conquered by the east, not part of it. And resisted from eastern adoption of culture
@@JimmyTheGreek2000 ottomans took music lessons from byzantine empire who are romans.i dont know a single greek who is proud of byzantium or say byzantines were greek.arabs learned music notes from persians
Se nota la influencia de la música árabe sobre la música griega.
