The money and time Boston Dynamics put into this gimmick could've been better used by developing smart prosthesis for the disabled and figuring out how to transfer commands directly from the brain to the prosthetic limb.

But already there are industries that use spot. One example is Spacex, they just started using it to inspect their prototype rockets after tests, a job too dangerous for humans. "tracks and roadwheels" wouldn't work either because of the debris from potential explosions. Off the top of my head, I can think of dozens of potential other applications as well. Dangerous jobs can be phased out to robots so fewer people will die in workplace accidents. Back to AI, imagine this paired with true artificial intelligence. You would have full hardware and software independence. The complexity of the tacks you could give it would be insane.

This brought back memories of my experiences building AI robots. Me and my dad used to build robots like SPOT but bigger with hands that could grab. They where actually bomb disposal units built for law enforcement. The technology then was nowhere as advanced as to now but this video made me smile.
Flesh eating robots have been developed. They are literally fueled by flesh, so yeah, any advancement in technology that holds the ability to be taken advantage of for ill purposes also instills what I believe to be reasonable, not irrational fear.

But the robot isn’t friendly either. The robot wouldn’t go after anyone. Only the pilot/driver/rider at the control would make the robot go after anybody. A gun is absolutely unfriendly. But many people don’t perceive them as a bad thing.

I imagine it would be relatively simply to map ATLAS's movements to a VR headset and tracked motion controllers for fine control. I'm sure that's coming if it's not here already.
Boston Dynamics has said that atm the have no plans to send Atlas out the the consumer market.
Atlas wouldn't be launched as it weighs 80 kg and is so heavy for being a "domestic robot".
Spot weighs 20 kg (average weight of a large dog) and Atlas is 5 feet in height.

This brought back memories of my experiences building AI robots. Me and my dad used to build robots like SPOT but bigger with hands that could grab. They where actually bomb disposal units built for law enforcement. The technology then was nowhere as advanced as to now but this video made me smile.

The thing was built for DARPA so I have to assume that was always the plan.
But the robot isn’t friendly either. The robot wouldn’t go after anyone. Only the pilot/driver/rider at the control would make the robot go after anybody. A gun is absolutely unfriendly. But many people don’t perceive them as a bad thing.
