Thanks. It's the best Night Lords painting tutorial I have seen, particularly for the lightning. I would be curious to have tips to paint the gold parts in silver instead because I prefer it with silver parts like it was in the Horus books. Maybe you have another video who can help ?
I do have a silver trim in my Word Bearers video (it's immediately following the intro so you don't need to skip around). It's a bit grungy though: ruclips.net/video/Xq5TFp8WShA/видео.html
This video deserves more views. Thanks for taking the time to explain why you're adding medium, what it does, and how to work with it. Finished result is stunning.
Ok…I wish I’d found this video sooner because these little serial killers look amazing! Time to head back to the hobby store for some new paints for my Nemesis Claw kill team.
This process is simple but has a strong 'there is an ugly phase where it doesn't look good' vibe with the lightning effect, that seems important to work through. Another great tutorial and I appreciate the eye lens tutorial to! Considering the thought you've put into using contrast paints, have you thought about doing a range of skin tones tutorial?
Thank you! I honestly don't paint human skin tones very often, so my skills are pretty limited on that topic. But I did a brief segment on how I use Contrast Paints to paint the flesh tones I do use here: ruclips.net/video/aJNBP1VzNH0/видео.html
I havent checked out your youtube library of videos yet, but man, i'd love to see you make a video of your favorite contrast paint blends if you haven't made one of those already. Stuff you consider to be like, super useful and applicable in a lot of different palettes.
@@DarcyBonoCreations im a newer subscriber, I love how you go over the formulation of your blends (and that you’ve shown me it’s entirely possible to blend contrast paints). I started out with army painter speed paints but struggled to blend those. Still unsure if it’s just me or if they’re not very suited for blending
@ironxYT Well thanks for joining! Oh I'm on the fence about Army Painter Speed Paints. It seems like even in the 2.0 series some of them still reactivate. I need to play around with them a bit more but that reactivation is a real problem since it pulls up the previous layer. You can varnish in between layers but it's a hassle.
This technique with the lahmian medium prep is a next level hack for painting armour panels with contrast. The paint goes right to the edges, the model as good as paints itself! Thank you! I'm following this tutorial for my night lords kill team - test model came out great 🎉
Ms. DBC! This is easily the coolest NL painting method I have seen yet. Incredible final product and fun process. Thank you so much for sharing your excellent skills and brilliant art.
This finish is amazing! Awesome video! Ive been using a lot of your tutorials lately for different projects. Im gonna need to pick up some kroxigor scales now! It seems like everytime I have all the paints I need a new one comes along.
Absolutely love this tutorial and will be trying it soon! How do you think it would look with a grungy oil wash over the top to make it more grim dark? Very inspirational thank you so much. Lovely video!
Thank you! I honestly don't have any experience with oil washes so can't comment. But I will say, I personally wouldn't put a grey wash of any kind over top because it will desaturate the heck out of everything and reduce the "pop"...but that's honestly just my paint style (saturated and fairly bright).
😄 Alors merci !
Im just about to get started with a fairly fresh warband of these boys so this is prefectly timed. I love this effect with the silvered-blue armour, and those glowing eye lenses! really cool! Thanks!
I was thinking of priming Metallic for the Night Lords and watching your video has given me food for thought. I like the trim you did as well, it has a grungy more Chaos effect which in my mind suits them more than bright trim. Lots of good tricks there I particularly liked the eye one. 🙂
Great video and awesome process! I dont know if ill get the kill team (unless I get infinite money sometime soon), but I feel like watching your vids gives me a better idea on how I want to paint my minis
This looks so good! I'm going to try it when the Kill Team comes out! One thing I'm wondering is what paints would you do for Red Gauntlet's, for condemned Night Lords?
Thanks! I'd probably just do Flesh Tearers Red again. If you want them a bit darker, like a deep brooding red, you can mix in a tiny bit of Shyish Purple. It's not quite a burgundy but a deep gothic red. I'd then highlight with Mephiston Red.
Would you use the Lahmiam Medium if you didn't do the lightning bolts? I have a coloured metallic scheme (think Iron Man) for my space marines, and I am trying to simplify my processes.
I personally would since it just helps the paint spread more smoothly and limits pooling when drying. I've done it before where you mix in the medium with your color first and that works (as in the case of my Word Bearers - video example at 14:20 of the following ruclips.net/video/Xq5TFp8WShA/видео.htmlsi=OYUiPsxUsIiY3Q1U), but I find it a smoother application when you put down the medium first. But either way I recommend using the medium since you're working with smooth surfaces when painting space marines.
@@DarcyBonoCreations thank you for the awesome tips. You are definitely one of the more responsive content creators, and I really appreciate it. These videos are inspirational, and I am definitely going to test these techniques to try and make my paint scheme easier on myself.
Awesome video, this is what Night Lords look like in my head. Fantastic tutorial and one I'm definitely going to try out. Any thoughts on Khorne berserkers or thousand sons?
hey darcy, i wanted to prime the mini with an airbrush and do a zenithal (lighter metallics towards the top). which primer would you recommend to achieve the properties you mentioned? also, youre incredibly talented!
This was great to see. I really liked the technique for the eyes as they did have a firey glow. Also how much do you thin down the white paint with water? A 😊
Thank you! So the Vallejo Game Air Dead White I did for the lightning bolts, I didn't thin down at. The Pro Acryl White I used for the base coat is probably a 2:1 paint to water ratio. You can also do the same medium down first trick and that works pretty well.
haha right! Found the link for the model it came with: www.warhammer.com/en-US/shop/Night-Lords-Praetor-2019?srsltid=AfmBOoqfwF78P4p6_UarfYbIf_l1Bp11psrFB1DdrItkNqNDagkZLatX I thought they used to sell Night Lords helmets but maybe they've stopped.
Sadly, I wouldn't recommend it with a paint brush as most Contrast Paints are not intended for large surfaces. You could do it with an airbrush though, following the same process but applying your blue glazes with an airbrush so they don't pool/show brush strokes (minus the Lahmian medium layers since you dont need them to spread the paint evenly).
I also like Army Painter Speed Paints (2.0 version). They're really smooth, but are a bit inconsistent in quality at time (some have been really gritty). I've also noticed that some reactivate, but I have yet to determine what causes it.
Instead of using a medium, I add some retardant to the mix. Slows down drying time and allows me to focus on getting the transitions and take care of pooling much more easily.
@@DarcyBonoCreations imho you'd actually save time, as you'd only do it once (adding a few drops), rather than having to constantly switch to medium. Just a thought ;)
@@kaibe5241 Ooooooh I see, sorry I read that as laying down retardant first instead of mixing it in (even though that's exactly what you said 😅). Thanks I'll give it a try!

Don't know how the algorythm treats it, but I'm way okay with these slightly longer formats, so don't be too afraid !

You can use any acrylic Medium. I just say Lahmian since it's accessible for most hobbiests.
@@DarcyBonoCreations Thank you! You’re epic!
Do you apply Lahmian and let it dry before using contrasts on the eyes? Or do you use contrasts while Lahmian is still wet?
While it's still wet. You're using it as a liquid so it pulls the next liquid on top of it into the recesses.
