Wow! That sunset! How lucky are we? Not only to get to tag along on Miss Dixie's adventures and see the sights she shares, but also her personal insights and "life lessons"
Miss Dixie, you have a kind, generous, old soul. We all love you for that. Now Northward to Canada, where your crown awaits!

Amen! Sometimes I swear, it's like she's speaking directly to me. I got a little refreshing from her little lesson, yet again. I'm in the marathon and although I want it now, I have to run a little bit longer. Or "Do the whoopin", to use Dixie's words.

By the end of this video, your whole energy and demeanor have changed. You are stronger, cheerier, more animated, and playful. It is obvious that you were suffering from a low grade, energy-draining infection before and must have been in a lot of pain. I'm so glad you are getting all better. May the guy who discovered antibiotics live in happiness and joy forever for all the blessings he has brought to people after millennia of suffering.

I don't normally comment but I want to take a moment to thank you for blessing us with your priceless commentary. I'm referring to things like "taking the time to look with your eyes and not just through the camera". and on you PCT adventure when you said "the Sierras are like a live in post card". I have said the same things during some of my back packing adventures. Like the time I was closing out a week in the Trinity Alps in California. I had taken the new trail to Caribou Lake, My first time there, I spent the night. Hiking out I took the Old trail. When I got to the ridge "Caribou Pass" at 8000 foot elevation. With such incredible views as the entire snow capped trinity alps mountain range and both Caribou Lakes in view on one side of the ridge. Shasta mountain and the rest of the Trinities on the other side. With my supplies exhausted, flashlight batteries dead, the sun going down soon and an appointment to be picked up at the trail head. I found myself dragging my feet, unable to leave the beauty i was witnessing. I took a thousand pictures knowing that none would do justice to the incredible beauty I beheld with my eyes. I'm 57 now and don't know how much longer I will be able to continue my own back packing adventures but rest assured I will continue as long as I possibly can. I encourage you to do the same because it never gets old...

"You have to have the bads to have the goods." So true. You'll get there, and it will be so worth it. And meanwhile, thanks for the amazing views and incredible photography. I've been really thankful every Wednesday for the combination of beautiful scenery, human story and well-earned philosophy. Thanks for sharing all of that in your videos. Plus, from teeth to toes, you're one of the toughest people I've ever seen.

And yet again your closing thoughts - Are you gonna be whooped or are you going to do the whoopin'? - resonate deeply. When I struggled near the end of my bout with throat cancer last year, believe it or not one thing that got me through the chemo and radiation was to think of it and treat it like a long, painful hike. You and other vlogging thru-hikers helped me more than you might believe. Watching y'all's struggles to reach the goal was and is inspirational.
It's wonderful that you're so aware of and able to express those thoughts as well. As has been said in previous comments, you are developing into quite a good story teller. Keep on.

  • @michaelb1761

Those moments of extreme beauty are made all the better by the struggle to get there. I try to remember that whenever I'm struggling through PUDs or bad weather. I was soaking in a creek after a several hot dry days of hiking when some day hikers came along once, and I felt bad for them, because they couldn't appreciate how wonderful that cool creek truly was. Isn't it great to hike!

Cool you are almost there. I've been with you since 2015 on the A.T. Dixie. I can relate to the feelings you have been experiencing along the trails of life. We all go through it one way or another. Life teaches us all. Our paths maybe different, but the end results are all mostly the same. We live, then we pass on to another spiritual destination. Have fun.

Your comment when you were describing the everyday life on the trail where you take the everyday life on the trail for granted. Where you said the PCT, AT and CDT trail were similar reminds me of a David Byrne movie called Wild wild life. He said at the end of the movie. " when you first come to a new place you notice everything, the doorknob, the table etc. I enjoy forgetting , for only through forgetting can you see things again as they really are." I really enjoy your videos. I hope I forget them so I can again enjoy seeing them again. Thanks!

Dixie, I can't tell you just how much of a pickup your videos are. The region you are hiking in this video was my backyard when I was growing up. It brings back so many memories. The sunsets truly are amazing, and just enjoying creation all around you is just fantastic. I've never considered the CDT before, even with growing up next to it. I may have to give it a shot. Glad you finished the CDT. When you go back to cover the fire closures please consider doing the inner segment of Glacier park. Its great too.

Another great video. Any adventures are going to provide you with a lifetime of memories. Panning for gold is a very relaxing hobby and most states have places to prospect. I used to take my son prospecting occasionally.
I hope that hurricane Micheal spares your home and family. It looks real bad for the folks along the coast.
I recommend that you carry an AMK Heetsheet emergency blanket. They work great inside your sleeping bag when you get caught by unexpected low temps. I've used them for years because they are quiet and tougher than the usual mylar blankets. A trick that I learned in Boy Scouts 55 years ago was to heat up rocks around the camp fire(not too hot) and use them to dry shoes and clothes overnight in the tent and even as "hot water bottles" when needed. We even made snow shoes out of pine branches and shoe laces(spares) one time.
A couple of the MRE heater bags can give you a hot breakfast without having to get out of your bag in the morning. You may need better foot wear. Our weather guesser thought that the northern Rockies may get up to two feet of snow later this week. Good Luck

It's true that lessons learned on the trail can apply to everyday life. Being aware of your surroundings, persevering, being prepared, dealing with strangers, appreciating the small things, being awed by the everyday wonders, knowing your limits and learning to not live in fear can all be infused into our daily routines. As Dixie has shown us, time alone in the backcountry gives a person time to contemplate, figure stuff out and recenter ourselves in the grand scheme of things. Good lessons for us all. I hope she keeps track about what she has gained from her adventures and writes a book about wilderness philosophy.
