    Hey internet! This time around we're here to do a classic dnb neuro bass using Serum. This bass is inspired by the likes of Culprate / Noisia /Zenji bass design. (Your mileage may vary)
    This is a super simple patch, and one that's very very useful for resampling, I know I'll certainly be using it more!
    Hope this helps, and hope you folks learned something!
    Stay classy!

    This was the most insane bass I've ever re-created, I know this was posted a few years ago but super props to you my man! I've been using serum for nearly 2 years now, and I've never learnt so much about the software until today, thankyou!

      Glad the video was helpful! Serum is quite powerful - I'm sure as you get more to grips with it you'll be very surprised at what it can do!

    I loved that you took the time to explain your thought process each time you modulated a parameter! A lot of times people rush through tutorials and just say "this here, that much, great, this next" and by the end it's really hard to have grasped anything other than numeric settings, but this was fantastic, especially for those of us who feel a bit lost when it comes to building sounds from scratch with sound design. Thanks for sharing!

      Glad to hear it! That's a big part of why I started the channel as I felt a lot of other production channels just spouted presets without any reasoning.

    and then i just dragged this thick neuro bass sample into the wavetable editor...

    • @VenusTheory
      @VenusTheory  6 лет назад +9

      Haha yep! Any neuro one shot should work! I've also had a lot of fun with distorted 808s that I've bounced out and used as a wavetable for similar sounds!

    • @williamchisholm2032
      @williamchisholm2032 4 года назад +4

      I got a little stuck here as I have no neuro one shots or any type of similar sample. I ended finding a pretty fat distorted 808 that I liked and serum would not let me drag it in so I finally just searched through serum until I found a decent sounding bass and fucked with it in the editor until I liked it. It was kinda fun lol

    Hands down the best tutorial I've ever seen. Thanks so much for sharing. You are a true gent! Really well explained and even I could follow it, with limited knowledge. Just in case it hasn't been pointed out, sometimes the sounds of the bass didn't play, but that didn't matter too much, as it would play the next time, strange! thanks again

    Feels like you kind of glossed over a pretty crucial part of this sound's design with that one-shot sample. How did you make / get it? I tried working it out on my own, and got pretty close for a novice attempt, but the end result from using it sounds nothing like the neuro bass you end up with. If you could share the one-shot, or elaborate on how it was made, I'd really appreciate it!

    • @VenusTheory
      @VenusTheory  7 лет назад +2

      Hey dude! I actually did look for it, but I think I deleted it a while ago when I was purging some junk from my drives. That said, I do know it was made in FM8 with 2 sines, a square, and white noise all FMing in some way. I may have the samples on a backup drive somewhere though, so if I ever dig around and find it I may post that (and the other basses seen in that folder) eventually.
      However most of it was just resampling a bunch of times, my first video (the sine compression tutorial) is really how I did it, so you can check that out for some more information on making those types of basses.

    Good tutorial, but it's not exactly helpful when even if we're making a different variation of your sound, that you add a COMPLETELY finished one shot bass as an oscillator, and then not upload it for us. I love the concept of this type of synthesis, but you're leaving out a major part if we can't re-create what you're doing. Sure I can get my own, but this isn't exactly from scratch.

    Hey dude! Loved the video, but when I import my own sample into serum, normalize it and morph it, i get a lot of noise when moving the wave table position. Little clicks here and there but when I bind it to an LFO it gets really overwhelming. I tried crossfading the edges of the samples in serum but that only made it sound meh. Would you have any tips? Thanks!

    • @VenusTheory
      @VenusTheory  4 года назад +1

      Yo! With certain complex sounds (especially longer samples) or sounds with lots of DC offset/movement this can cause some hard clicks in the wavetable. In those cases there are a few options:
      - Try other sounds
      - Shorten the sample to a smaller segment
      - Find the 'good part' of the wavetable, cut the rest out, then morph again on that remaining section
      - Manually fix the clicks by redrawing the waveform at those points
      Personally, I'd just find the best sounding part of the wavetable, keep only that, and then re-morph it to fill the entire table. Hope that helps!

      Huh, that's weird. Sounds like a bug maybe? Maybe ask Xfer support (if they have a support team) or make sure Serum is up to date. That's really odd though. But keep after it and I'm sure you'll get something close or something you're happy with! Don't forget post processing too, that's really important with basses!

    Question, is it possible to turn the macros controlling things like the lfo rate and such into an automation clip? Currently my midi is broken, so trying to work out the best way of creating patterns with different modulation without having to hold down a key and tweak the macros using a mouse!

    • @VenusTheory
      @VenusTheory  6 лет назад +1

      Hey dude! Certainly! In Cubase, you can click the W button in the top left of a plugin to 'write' automation to a lane you can then tweak. Just hit play with W active, and tweak a parameter. In Ableton, you should be able to right click and show/create automation or whatever it's called there haha.

      "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Don't teach a man how to fish and you feed yourself.
      He's a grown man. Fishing isn't that hard."
      - Ron Swanson
      In all seriousness though, I don't provide patches typically as the point of this channel is to teach the ideas and principles of sound design and making stuff so that you can take that and make it your own. However, there are plenty of free serum packs and other channels that offer downloads for the patches! Just not really the point of the channel, so I don't save them to post later haha.
      The patch isn't too crazy though, mostly it's a matter of experimenting with different samples and sound sources as a modulator for the first oscillator. Everything from there on is just a matter of what you think sounds good!

  • @romash11
    @romash11 6 лет назад

    where did you get the sample that you loaded into serum oscillator 2?

    • @VenusTheory
      @VenusTheory  6 лет назад

      Hey dude! That was just a bass I made myself. If I remember right it was something I made in FM8 and resampled a few times or something along those lines.

  • @Andrei.x8
    @Andrei.x8 6 лет назад

    so without that one shot sample it basically sounds nothing like what you presented. Tried using similar stuff but it's just way off. Also that 20 minute tutorial on sine basses you recommended watching to get that kind of sound is also using a lot of stuff that's not available if one's using a different DAW. I appreciate the knowledge sharing, very exhaustive, but maybe make all the included items available when making something so complex, especially when it is the core of the whole sound.

    • @VenusTheory
      @VenusTheory  6 лет назад

      Well, I'd argue that's the point here really - the idea is a process, not a thing to copy. If you're having trouble with it though I'd use the first custom waveform with some unison, FM that with a square or some other basic waveform and automate a few things, then render that and import to OSC B which should give something in the same ballpark. For the most part, it's all about experimenting and seeing what you come up with yourself.

    is there anywhere we can download these patches or wavetables?

    • @VenusTheory
      @VenusTheory  6 лет назад +1

      Hey dude! Didn't save the patch actually since the point of this video was just to show some ways to make basses like this one. But if you toss in some neuro one shot or something random and just futz about with osc1 similar to what I did here it should get you close!

    • @VenusTheory
      @VenusTheory  6 лет назад +1

      Yo! Sure you can! You can import any bass one shot, some foley, or whatever you want to create this type of sound. In this case, I just made a quick bass using FM8 and used that as a wavetable. If you're not super keen with sound design quite yet, you can bounce a Serum preset you like to audio, then import that as a wavetable.

      @@VenusTheory alright i i will try, what do u do with the lower freqs in this sound, they are kinda very uncontrolled, i already thought about putting a sub underneath

    • @VenusTheory
      @VenusTheory  6 лет назад +1

      @@fabulousk9014 Yo! For most basses, I find using multiband compression (waves C4 is my favorite for this) is a good way to stabilize the spectrum a bit instead of EQing. That said, you could certainly EQ out the low end and supplement with a sub instead or do some bandsplitting!

    By the way it’s “Reece” not Reese, it’s out of respect for the UK drum & bass genre unless we want to give all the credit to the US, which we do not want! DnB is born & bred in the UK so it’s Reece ☝🏻
