    Boy, did I underestimate how much time I needed for this episode. Thank you all for your patience, and I hope you like it! This month we're taking a look into Assassin's Creed Odyssey (and to a lesser extent, AC Origins) to analyze why Ubisoft's time off and reinvention of the series aided it in growing in the future.
    Also, check out our last episode: Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Blue/Red Rescue Team!

    I just bought the game, and I'm not being biased because of my nostalgia to the older games. My all time favorite game is Assassin's Creed Brotherhood with Ezio; however, even though I'm a "veteran" of the AC series. Assassin's Creed Odyssey is by far a really enjoyable game to play, I recently bought the game despite the backlash it got. At first i though it would be horrible, due to the criticism given by other AC fans. I didnt let my nostalgia blind my ability to enjoy this game, and boy oh boy.....this game is good. Sure it has its few weird glitches, but what game doesnt? I cant wait to finish this game, even though it's a huge game.....I'm enjoying it

    I'm so glad I found your channel. I was getting sick of the sensationalist videos digging for excuses to complain about a game. And all the channels who are obsessed with this idea that "old is better, change is always bad"
    Ac odyssey was the first game since black flag that I actually finished.
    Ofyssey imo is every good a game as the witcher 3. The have their own strengths and weaknesses compared to each other, but the general gameplay and stat and gear mechanics were so much better than the witcher 3 that it makes up for the story being not AS good. Although still good.
    This game was one of my favorite RPGS this entire generation. Never loved an ac game as much as I love odyssey.

      Honestly, the game would be an AMAZING standalone game, but it is a terrible assassins creed game. Don't get me wrong, the graphics are amazing and the world is elite. But I just can't stand the characters and I hate how they made an AC game that didn't have any assassins, any templares, and it had gods.

    • @user-ky9ou5dz9q
      @user-ky9ou5dz9q 4 года назад +19

      @@seanmurray-macgregor4486 how many ac games have you played though in reality all the way through? Do you not remember the super technologically advanced first civilization? And there magic artifacts? Like the series gets pretty hardcore scifi fantasy. As far as you can go essentially.
      And in odyssey, its explained away as technology left behind by the first civilization as essentially guard dogs.
      If they just threw them in, maybe I'd see your point, but they did tie it into the ac lore pretty heavily.
      They are not actual gods.
      But let's say I agree that its wildly different for some reason, even though if you put any other name on this game youd absolutely see that it was an ac game after playing it for 10 minutes, so? Ac games havent been good since black flag and 3 was sub par at best. The ac games have never been masterpieces in any regard. This is still the best game with the ac name regardless of if you think its deserving of it or not.
      And seriously, this game holds way to many similarities to ac to ever be called something else. What fundamental part of ac isnt in odyssey? I truly dont understand. What isnt is superficial. In practice you are following the same types of plots, in the same setting, with the same lore, doing the same exact things.
      Hunting down ancient scifi tech.
      Hunting down and assassinating leaders of a facist group of super elites hell bent on total control with a group of historical figures.
      3rd person action adventure open worlds
      An emphasis on stealth
      Emphasis on verticality and freedom of movement/parkour
      A modern day element in which you play as a character time traveling essentially with matrix like technology.
      The historical settings themselves being the main backdrop
      So on and so forth. All the main pillars are absolutely undeniably there. Those things would stick out like a sore thumb with any other name. If those things arenr enough for you to call the game ac, I dont understand what is. Everything else feels rather surface level. Like what you call groups that do the exact same things with very similar goals. Or the fact you use a different weapon to do the exact same things.
      I also find it odd that you complain about monsters and gods and what not when in ac 3 you foight a super powered evil George Washington. Who had legit super powers. Idk man. Odd complaint to complain about fantasy or scifi elements in ac when in the first trilogy of games you're hunting down a magic egg that can mind control the entire planet or whatever

      @@user-ky9ou5dz9q I'm pretty glad to say I've played each and every AC game besides oddysey and Syndicate all the way through, because both stories were terrible. And as I said, oddysey would be a pretty good standalone game. But the new games have become COMPLETELY invested in gods and scifi, while the old games had historical accuracy and relatively realistic battles where a random animal nearby wasn't a damage sponge.
      And I saw a video that perfectly summed up Alexios and Kassandra. They are shells. They aren't really characters. Your choices don't influence the game and they have no set morals or principles, you choose what happens, and nothing happens because of that. No matter what you choose it does not influence whether they are good or bad. It only influences one fight or bit of dialogue.
      The map, is amazing, the graphics are great, but it felt empty. I didn't get satisfaction like I did with every other game just walking through the streets. The map was so big it got to the point that it just seemed like they were trying to impress people with size over quality.
      I will agree, the old games got a bit odd with the Scifi and God related stuff, but it wasn't a large part of the games. I absolutely hated how you could verse mythical creatures, as even though it is apart of the mythology they believed in, it isn't historically accurate. I disagree with them creating powerful creatures to destroy because it takes away from what the franchise once was.
      And finally, the game in general. I know AC was becoming slightly repetitive, but they are leading the game in a bad way. Assassins Creed Oddysey does not even have Assassins in it, that's how far they've strayed. And yeah you can argue as much as you want about how good the game is meant to be. But it isn't a game that should be apart of the franchise. It's quite sad that some fans are just asking to simply have assassins in the game now.

    • @user-ky9ou5dz9q
      @user-ky9ou5dz9q 4 года назад +11

      @@seanmurray-macgregor4486 the dialogue system works exactly like the witcher 3. Same causes and effects except theres more of them.
      And I HIGHLY disagree about the story. Odyssey had the best writing in the series.
      And are you sure you played the other games? Lol. Theres always been a ton of scifi in the series. It's always been scifi lol. In each any every game you're protecting the world from an evil organization hell bent in using ancient alien tech to do all sorts of scifi fantasy stuff. The first few games you were hunting down a magic egg.
      Odyssey has less scifi than the Desmond trilogy debatably.
      And the historical accuracy within the setting is through the rough. Have you not done the tour mode? Theres not a single other game on the market in that game period with historical accuracy like that.
      You're really reaching and being incredibly biased. You're choosing to ignore all the other games where the same is true. You have selective bias here.
      Do you not remember ac 3? The bear slam and all the mystical elements with the native Americans? Or eternal king George Washington? Lmao. Like come on dude. The entire series foundation is within scifi. That's how you get to the time periods in the first place. In a lot of the games you start in a super high tech evil company looking for ways to get information about magic ancient artifacts to take over the world. By using the matrix essentially lol. Sooooooo
      Also, as far as open world. Cmon man. Really? Its packed full of more content than the witcher 3 and is incredibly dynamic. There factually has not been a single other ac game with quests as detailed as these, as long as these, and were the focus is no longer just little collectables and challenge missions. Theres so much I the open world. Every single couple hundred meters there something. The open world is factually the most dense in the series.
      The other games had boring open worlds. They looked really nice, the npcs were plentiful. But there was nothing to do but the old school open world shit. The spiderman ps4 type of stuff. Really shallow and repetitive. Theres so much variety in odyssey you could spend hours in the game at a time and not do one of each.
      You have tons of targets to hunt, bounty hunters to hunt or hide from, massive massive bases to plunder, underwater caves to discover, normal caves, bosses to find, ships to battle and upgrade, an insane amount of high quality well written quests with branching paths to partake in thats closest rival is the witcher 3, incredibly varied combat, tons and tons and tons if gear to collect and builds to create, bounties to do, enemy camps to raid, large scale battles to fight as factions to side with, wild life to hunt, tombs to explore, it just keeps going and going and going.
      And it's nearly all far far far more involved than any previous game. Come on man, say what you want about the story and what not, but a huge amount of high quality content in it's open world is not one of its issues. At least be honest about that. At the very least relative to the rest of the franchise. Theres not a single other ac game with more content and variety and scope in it content.

    Totally agree, I think the thing that the majority of AC fans have in common is their love for history and being able to explore historic eras, cities, monuments aswell as meet historic people. The game being set in Ancient Greece is obviously the big selling point and any history lover is bound to love the landscape and storytelling especially the mythology included. Many AC fans will look for reasons to hate on it as it’s different to the other games, you do get forced into a lot of battles and there aren’t as many assassinations but you can choose to play the majority of the game stealthy if you wanted to which is what I do. People need to remember that this game is an explanation to the Isu - human bloodline and also offers more history and lore to the origins of the Templar’s/Abstergo. If you want a game about assassins then this isn’t the game for you but it’s still an amazing game, has amazing scenery, accurate history, many different islands and locations to explore and you can even see the start of the Makedonian empire, can’t wait for Valhalla !

    Just because there aren’t actual Assassins and Templars doesn’t mean it isn’t Assassin’s Creed. You still fight against tyranny while fighting for free will and freedom. The DLC also ties into Origins and Origins ties into the main story. The Cults of Kosmos and Ancients look like just like pre-Templars to me, you still have to take and protect several Artifacts that would be awful in the hands of the tyrants, you have to destroy their Artifact, and you still have the core of Assassin’s Creed in this game, the First Civilization. Desmond’s entire story is about the First Civilization!! Anyone who says this isn’t Assassin’s Creed is a fool who’s oblivious to the obvious. However, the character development and direction could’ve been better though. I didn’t like that there was a choice for every bit of dialogue in the game, I don’t want the character to be like me, I want the character to be the character’s own person. That’s the ONLY complaint I have for this game. While the playable character could’ve been their own person, the scenes in the game were amazing, the story is amazing. Last but not least who doesn’t like Sparta? Seriously is their ANYONE who dislikes Sparta and the rest of Ancient Greece?

    People are blinded by the past AC games , people fail to realise that , the old AC formula was getting stale. AC Oddysey changed changed the franchise a really good way. I played a few older AC games like AC3 and Brotherhood however Oddysey in my opinion is a fresh breath of air into the franchise . The story was interesting especially the Deimos plot line despite not adding anything to the overall AC story but I am fine with that. The world was astounding beutiful hand crafted locations such as Athens , Atlantis , beautiful lang scapes however some parts off the world in particular Boetia were quiet empty and not worth exploring. The game had a fun gameplay loop and collecting resources was diverse , if you want you can grind resources from bases or ship battles or sidequests or mining and hunting. The RPG aspect was also really good it wasn't over complicated , it offered skills for 3 main types of playstyles. The customisation was also good offering different armours to fit every kind of players taste.

I think these games are good for AC lore, as I love AC lore, but that's about it for odyssey (haven't beaten origins).
      I do agree with the fact that games need to evolve, but games need to evolve, not lose their identity. AC has lost its identity, it's not AC anymore.
      Fallout 3 and 4 aren't true fallout games. They're just elder scrolls games with guns. Fallout 1-2 were really really different. New Vegas kinda combined both the 2.
      Odyssey is in the AC franchise, but it doesn't carry on the AC identity.

    5:30 LOL do not get me wrong, I love this game, I have 150 hours in it rn and I'm still playing it and I plan to 100% it but how in the hell is a game forcing you to get certain abilities EVER a good thing, especially when it's a game based around your choices???? That's why I can't stand the forced fighting segments in the game (there's technically only 2 with the first conquest battle and the swordfish fight but they're both awful) especially if you, like me, wanted to play a stealth build and didn't spec into warrior builds at all bc you expected to have a choice in how you approach each combat scenario. I had to grind for 3 hours to do the first conquest battle and progress in the game and it was horrendous bc the game never told me I was supposed to spec into warrior skills. If you're going to force warrior segments, how about giving player those skills as a base without wasting the extremely limited ability points (especially considering how long it takes to level up sometimes) and then letting them build off of that if they want to? That's not something you should be praising the game for. It's actively taking away player choice by forcing them to spec into builds they don't want to to stand a chance against stronger enemies. That's a very bad thing, it's like game design 101, especially for games like Odyssey built completely around player choice.

    • @fistfightersclub
      @fistfightersclub 2 года назад +1

      I have played a stealth build and do those easily (also like you I do too have over 100 hours on the game) cause by that time of those two forced fights scene you were talking about you kinda have a grasp on how to get a good hand of your combat no matter what build. But I think though you have made good points and despite me response I still think that yes they could have done better. Have a nice day.

    • @James.Stark.Ben.Edition
      @James.Stark.Ben.Edition 2 года назад

      @@fistfightersclub I mean, on lower difficulties it must be easier but I played on nightmare so most enemies two shot me and I didn't have any of the abilities in the warrior tree at the point which is why I had to grind. The first conquest battle was a nightmare and I had to sort of cheese the swordfish fight by abusing the water in the cave. It was not very fun experience either time. It's not like the combat is particularly hard, just that my damage output and the enemy's damage output was too unmatched because the game expected you to at least have a few warrior abilities at that point. So it was practically impossible to get through it on nightmare without grinding or cheesing. It's definitely possible to get through the rest of the game all stealth tho except for the forced conquest battles later (but that's why you have the hero strike which can help immensely in combat).

    I don't think its a very good RPG, but definitely a step in the right direction that way. And its not seamless in the transition they are wanting to undergo for the franchise; there are a lot of plot holes and things that don't make sense for the lore. You also aren't really an assassin anymore... Despite these things, I found myself loving every second of this game. Which surprised me because I didn't enjoy origins as much as I had expected to.
    (At least as kassandra) I found myself immersed in the world around me and the storyline that I felt I was carving myself. I like exploring. On my first Skyrim playthrough, I didn't even start the main questline until i was like level 45 or something. And the only reason I did, was because another quest I was trying to complete (i think one from the mages guild) required a dragon scroll... Which you get from doing the main story. Odyssey quenched that desire to immerse myself in a beautiful landscape with new fighting mechanics that I loved. The spear of leonidas is such a fun item to play with and I find myself strategizing around its use constantly.
    Its a great game that doesn't get the credit it deserves because of the AC label. I think fans of the franchise need to realize that the same old formula is stale at this point, (coming from a fan) and although its not a seamless transition, I think its one that benefits the franchise in the long run, as well as filling a gap in an industry that is pumped full of just garbage games. Odyssey isn't perfect, but its a GOOD GAME. And tbh, whenever I see people dismissing that just because it doesn't perfectly align with all of the lore... I feel like they haven't looked around at the gaming industry atm and need to realize just how grateful we should be that this franchise even still exists and is making money, while also creating competent games that can capture imaginations. Its something new. And in this case i think that's good.

Change is fine and while I'm not happy with the new direction, I don't believe every entry needs to appeal to me personally, I can always replay the games I prefer. I do wish they had more of the Assassin’s Creed lore/arc weaved into Odyssey. I was surprised by how little the main storyline had to do with the established assassin’s creed universe. I suppose some of that is to be expected when the narrative pre-dates the origin of the brotherhood, but even just more references would have been pleasant without having to play the side-quests/dlc.
      Hopefully the next game includes more of the brotherhood and can mix a little bit of new and old AC play styles.

      @@brandonpick1486 Okay, so - Patrice Desilets, Jade Raymond & Corey May created/built Assassin's Creed as we know and love it today. That is due in large part to Patrice's creative direction on I, II & Brotherhood (arguably the gold standard of AC). Jade co-produced I & Exec'd II while directing Unity (5). Corey wrote them all, except Unity - that was Jade's baby...in doing so made the story flow and maintained continuity within it from 1 installment to the next, he made it all make sense. They all departed the company around 2014-2015, Corey being the last to go and leaving us with the Masterpiece that is Syndicate, we've missed him the most because, remember he's the continuity guy...once he leaves - the story stops making sense. Ok, to be clear, ubisoft has been crossdressing characters since Black Flag with Mary Reade/Jack, Unity with d'Eon and even Syndicate with Ned, but it doesn't become the story while Corey is there maintaining continuity & story flow. So, the pre-game disclaimer still states, "this game was produced by a multicultural team of various religious faiths and beliefs"...no mention of "gender identities" or "sexual orientations" until Syndicate (2015), which is where things get weird at Ubisoft - from then on...the focus gets shifted away from the crescent and cross/assassin brotherhood vs. templar order to how manly can we make this girl look and get away with it (kassandra, xenia)? Here we see arguably the worst idea in AC history and that is 2 different sexes to change to thus completely disrupting the continuity and making the storyline in effect - meaningless. If 2 people with the same name and life (which they repeat in 9 - valhalla btw) exist at the same place in time, this will cause a time-space continuum rip - not a preference pleasing scene of chicks kissing, instead. "We wanna see girls be bigger than guys in muscle and stature" (weird and sjw). "We wanna see more girls hitting on other girls" (weird and sjw). "We wanna see people with different gender identities, before there was a gender identity to claim" (weird, stupid and sjw). Still, no mention of the templars or assassins, none of their "ideas" are about that. They don't have any, all they think about all day is themselves and their weird backwards politics...which they subject us to by putting it in a game, we're playing expecting to see Templars and Assassins...that's it! See, when there was a den Daddy (Corey) was still there - someone to tell them all this: No, your idea is stupid, self-serving and completely inappropriate/irrelevant for the material. Don't bring that up again, the game's not about you - its about the character. We could still get some great games made when he was here, now its a madhouse at 5505 Boul. Saint-Laurent. Seriously, the games play like a night with Kevin from Home Alone, they're just throwin' ish in, he wouldn't let them before and they play like it, 7-9 is a hodge-podge of a sjw's wishlist/wet dream...not a simulator for the ancient, brutally efficient war between the Assassin Brotherhood and the Knights Templar Order. In valhalla, they've got Black vikings and Azar (a chick from persia) wants to tell me about her "pronouns"...PRONOUNS???!!! In the 800's???!!!
