I purchased an Amazing E 16 amp charger almost 4 years ago to charge my 2012 Chevy Volt. Since that car had a limited charging speed, the E was perfect for me. It added 10-12 miles per hour and could fill the battery in 3-4 hours. Just recently I traded in the Volt for a 2020 Bolt EV. After 2 weeks, the Amazing E faulted on me, 5 flashing red lights and no power(although the green light was on). The next day I sent an e-mail to Clipper Creek and the following day their Customer Service leader asked me to describe the problems, etc. I responded and the next morning I had an e-mail from Clipper Creek that my replacement EVSE was on its way. I did tell them that the unit was 4 years old, maybe they missed that as I knew it was out of warranty. In any event, in a few days the replacement unit arrived. I opened the package, plugged it in and we were charging fine. Clipper Creek's customer service went above and beyond what they had to do, and I really appreciate that. It shows the level of care that they have for their customers. Kudos to Clipper creek.

Why is the AmazingE so conservative in its current delivery to the car? A 14-30 outlet is allowed to deliver 24A to the car, yet the AmazingE only delivers 16A. You could get 50% more miles per charging hour if it was rated to the amount allowed. Clipper Creek's own LCS-30P has a 14-30 plug and delivers 24A to the car. Sure, it's more expensive at $515, but it is able to deliver the full power allowed.
If I was going to spend the money on an AmazingE Fast, I would buy a Tesla Mobile Connector and a TeslaTap Mini. That setup would allow you to use any available outlet, 120V or 240V, with the available Tesla adapters and also allow you to use Tesla Destination chargers.

If I had to guess, they wanted to use thinner, lighter wire to make it more portable. They could have used a NEMA 14-20 connector, but those aren’t as common. Optimally they would use swappable cables (like Tesla) to allow you to select the plug independently of the maximum current capacity.

I have the Level 1 AmazingE that was supplied as a Ford branded replacement for my Focus Electric. The original cord set was recalled because it didn't have a thermistor in the plug, but the new one does. Didn't have a problem with the old one, but so far so good with the AmazingE, seems well built.

The Level 2 AmazingE doesn’t have the thermal probe in the plug since the maximum 16A is well below the 30A rating of the outlet. The Level 1 unit is also only 12A but will work at Level 2 using adapters.

I wish someone would make a high quality, dual voltage, multiple current J1772 portable charger. I gather people will take Tesla’s Mobile Connector and change the connector, but I’m worried about the quality and safety of the modification. Optimally it would also allow you to throttle the current for cars that don’t let you do that in the vehicle for times when other things are on the same circuit.

I have the 40 Amp ZENCAR that I bought on Ebay. It works very well for me and may work for you too. It is dual voltage and just needs the adapter plugs. You can manually set the charging current from 10 amps to 40 amps and it is water resistant. It is a bit heavy, but that is good, as I know the wiring is almost oversized, so no risk of overheating.

Tom I really enjoy your reviews. I especially like that you point out the importance of safety and warranty. In reference to your review of the portable chargers, I believe they are a good idea except that 240 VAC outlets are not that common, at least in my experience. The lack of 240VAC outlets pretty much relegate portable chargers to home chargers, which is fine. Maybe once the infrastructure is built up portable chargers will be more portable.

PlugShare lists a number of them around. The most common source is RV parks. Any RV site with 50A service (that cater to motorhomes / large 5th wheels) has the NEMA 14-50 outlet.
I've also seen a number of listing for hotels or other businesses that have (usually) just one plug available for EV charging. It's a lot cheaper for businesses to put in a plug than to install a whole charging station.

@@StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney i’m thinking that these may be subjected to weather extremities more so than most chargers used by customers other than DC Fast or Destination Chargers. Deploying them in frigid weather would probably be from inside the car where it’s a moderate temperature but trying to get them to coil back up after they’ve been exposed for multiple hours of charging may be a different story. Makes you wonder if the charging of the vehicle could leave the cable warm enough to offset some of the cold trying to penetrate from the outside.

I plan to have a Chargepoint Home Flex at my home, and use DCFC when away from home. I figure having a portable L2-only portable EVSE will not be helpful for me in an emergency since most people/places do not just have a 240V outlet available, so would not actually be helpful in an emergency. Thanks for the review. I have a episode idea/request to pass on to you Tom. I ask because this seems in line with the other types of content you have on your channel (range confirmations, etc.). With the upcoming release of 3 pickups I'd REALLY like to know the affect on the range of adding tonneau covers (createacommotion.com/wp-content/uploads/1221.jpg) and truck caps (createacommotion.com/wp-content/uploads/ARE-Truck-Cap.jpg) to the electric trucks. I'll explain why below in case you're interested. I realize this might be hard to do with press trucks and that you might have to borrow from actual owners to achieve it. Also, I appreciate the effort this would take (basically range test times 2 or 3).Anyway, that's the idea. Best wishes for a lovely day.
Why I'm interested in this review. I am a Lyft driver in Colorado and I also need to haul boxes etc around on a regular basis for a small business I have. So I need a cargo cover to protect passenger luggage in foul weather and the boxes when I move them in the same bad weather. I want an electric vehicle. To date there really isn't an electric vehicle out there that really meets my needs so I'm stuck using an ICE vehicle for the time being. These pickups will finally have the cargo capacity I need and the ability to do Lyft work in all weather conditions including deep Colorado snow conditions with their 4WD (AWD) and high ground clearance compared to cars (like Tesla Model Y). I TRULY drive about 300-400 miles ever single day for Lyft. After driving for an 11-12 hour shift I really don't want to sit at a charging station in the middle of my day for another 30-60 minutes to charge in electric cars that in actuality only get 250-280 miles range. I think the 300 mile range in the F-150 will be just enough. There are higher range options in the Rivian and Tesla that are also a bit better. I don't think the sloped roof on the Tesla will give me quite enough cargo space so I'd like to add a truck cap to that too. If these caps decrease the range 10-20% or more then it really makes the F-150 unusable for my situation and could make the Rivian and Tesla a nail biter ever single day if the reduction is too much. That is why I have a strong desire to know how these additions will affect the range on these trucks. One thing I appreciate about your channel (amongst many things) is that you don't just give educated guess about how something will perform. You actually go out and prove it all the way!

@@stevec2196 These won't even plug into a 120-volt source, Steve. They require a 240-volt outlet. So I get what you're saying, but I don't personally see this as misleading or a "scam". Most of the EV charging equipment sellers all say the same thing about charging faster with their equipment.

You gave it 4 out of 5 stars. You talk up the quality, but then you say the only thing wrong is the price… 🧐

I've never given any charger a 5-star rating because none are perfect. These are very good choices, IMO. If they were a little less expensive the ratings would be higher.
