    Day 5 post procedure. I spent the night in the hospital getting the bladder wash done. I was given pain meds in recovery. After that mostly Tylenol, and Robaxin. I had foley removed yesterday with minimal discomfort. It was in for 4 days. I have followed your advice in every respect. Definitely get the Depends. After foley removal you will leak and need a bed pad, or a diaper or both. The urinary relief pills are a definite plus as well. I've used those before for bladder issues. Oddly enough I had no pain on first urination, but it has become more painful in the last 12 hours. Thanks so much for posting this video, it's a great reference for those of us either contemplating the procedure or once it's done. For me so far so good, and am looking forward to watching your 6-month video this weekend. I have not had a flow like this in 20 years. Take care!

    Today is day 8 post-TURP for me. The surgery took about an hour. General anesthesia. 22 French Foley after surgery and the surgeon sent me home after post-op recovery and awake. That was less than an hour after the procedure. I had the large Bard bag (with the clothes hanger), so I hand carried it with me in the wheel chair when the nurse pushed me to my (driver’s) car. I had a 5-day course of antibiotics and oxycodone (5-325) for pain. I only took the pain meds the first day at home post-op). Surgery was on Tuesday and on Friday (3 days later) the Foley was removed. At that appointment, they nurse did the “fill and drain” check with a sonogram. 500ml in -> remove Foley -> pee (which was quite messy, ie - a shower instead of a stream) -> sonogram. With 500ml in, only about 18ml remained after draining, and the nurse said that was a success. Went home without a catheter to huge relief because prior to the TURP I had a Foley for a month. I too had blood clots that drained when I had the Foley post-surgery, but by drinking a lot of water, almost all of the blood had been discharged by the time the Foley was removed.
    Now, a week later it is so much better. I once again have the ability to fully drain the bladder. Of course there is still a little tenderness in my “head” when I pee, but that is somewhat relieved by the “power” in my stream. Relief is great. So, gentlemen, do not fear the surgery. It is inconvenient and painful in the shortterm, but oh so beneficial in the long run.

      I'm getting ready to have a HOLep procedure. Yet to be scheduled. Which is a laser procedure. Similar process has TURP. However they can remove all of the prostate tissue within the prostate shell. I have a large prostate (185 grams) with a medial lobe.
      I'm tired of taking the medications for enlarged prostate. It started with a bladder infection in October of 2018. Sulfa was what finally knocked out the bladder infection. Which I found I'm also allergic to.
      I have been on two capsules of Tamsulosin every night - ever since. And no issues other than retaining some urine. Every residual ultrasound they do. Shows on retaining urine.
      My older brother had a TURP. 20 years ago. However they are recommending the HOLep procedure for my case. I've been told with HOLep they cath you after the procedure, and keep you overnight to monitor your urine output. And if everything is all right the next morning they will remove the catheter. And if you can urinate without the catheter for around 6 hours They will allow you to go home in the afternoon. Of course there will be antibiotics pain meds and followup instructions. For any issues. I'm praying and hoping that things go as expected. When the time comes.

    Just had my TURP done on jan 2,24. Sir, I must thank you for this extremely helpful video. I understand it's meant to compliment doctor's advice and not replacement. I'm from Canada and the procedure was covered by national free plan. It's great btw, but the Healthcare system is overloaded. I had to wait 5 months for the appointment while wearing several catheters. I watched this before surgery and again today ( day 13). It's comforting to know that these occasional watch battery size pcs of blood/scabs is natural. The urologist office is not open on weekends. It is discouraging to me to see these pcs and once or twice larger *clumps* pass through. I'm trying to keep my water intake almost ridiculously high. As you said, it's so important. I do treat myself to some watered down coffee, lol. Anyways thanks for all your helpful advice. BTW I purchased a 20 dollar foam neck brace to use as a donut seat to take pressure off of the area down there when sitting. Really helped on my car journey home from hospital with catheter. Thanks again, man and take care!

      How did your procedure and recovery go ?? I'm starting to have symptoms, probably had them for a while but they've intensified as of late so I know something's coming. Haven't even been to a urologist yet, I'm hoping medication might help. So many things to think about, there's Aquablation and Rezum. There's even a doctor in Arizona that does a TURP in office and no catheter needed. Kinda crazy ... Hope you're procedure went well ... 👊🏻

      @@roberts.1400 - it went well and the catheter went much better than I expected (had it in 5 days but it allowed the prostate to get a good start on healing). I pee like a 16 yo now which is nice. I still do have urgency to go (I have to pee NOW type thing - for me it is especially when pumping gas which seems odd but it’s happened again and again 🤷🏻‍♂️). I’m told it will get better; I’m currently post about 9 weeks. I was too the point of where I just couldn’t go at times and would require a catheter to get through it and then I’d be ok for a couple weeks and then BAM, in we go again. Don’t let yourself get to that point as it isn’t any fun; I did meds for a couple years but never really had a great response to it. I’d do a TURP again for the results I’ve seen thus far. I was a little freaked out from the size of the catheter when I came to enough to realize it was there but it wasn’t ever a problem during the course of having it. I do have retrograde ejaculation (semen goes back into the bladder for the most part but sensations I’d say during orgasm are even better than before) but of the age where having kids has long passed so not a big deal to me. Pre-cum for me is normal which helps with intercourse but things I worried about pre-surgery. Probably more than you wanted to know but things I really freaked out over and in hindsight I didn’t need to. Good luck!

    • @roberts.1400
      @roberts.1400 7 месяцев назад

      @@robvinande2699 I really do appreciate your response and I hear ya with the ejaculation thing, more of a mental thing just thinking about it but in practical terms I'm not having kids at my age anyways... I've got to call the VA today and see how soon I can get into a urologist, if medications give me a year or two to wrap my head around this then that's a plus, but then again retirement is soon approaching so having it done on the employers medical plan rather than medicare might give me more choices. This is somewhat unexpected, not like I saw it coming, I was humming along just fine until recently. Not something I'm looking forward to but sitting on the toilet for 20 minutes ain't no fun 😳 Best of luck in your continued recovery ...

My Doctor (Urologist) told me from the beginning that I would need surgery sooner or later. The truth is that I was leaving it as the last option but I'm tired of so much antibiotic for UTIs, the next appointment I have with him I'm going to tell him that I'm ready for surgery, I put myself in God's hands, I have faith that everything will be fine. I am 70 years old and they kept me over night and told me you were free to go, no pain pills. It was a little painfully when they pulled out the catheter (garden hose) or it felt like. If they keep you at the hospital for observation you don't have to bother with a catheter.

    My husband had a TURP 2 days ago. He started with a complete blockage. Urinary catheter for a month while waiting for surgery. Prostate was 160 ml, with the medial lobe pushed into the bladder. Surgery was 2 hours. 1 night in hospital with bladder irrigation. Catheter out next AM and he was able to pee! Only pain meds were Tylenol and a bladder relaxer. Today is day 2. His flow is good, urine is pink. He is a little sore, but otherwise feels good. Tiny bit of leakage, but otherwise no issues at all. He is very glad he had this done.

      @kknopp04 After about a week he'll probably have some clots come out. And some more bleeding. Read the other recent comment from the guy that overdid it too soon. Make sure he takes it easy even when he starts feeling good. If he doesn't, he will start bleeding again. Full 8 weeks, nothing strenuous and no lifting over 20 lbs. That means no picking up the grandkids!

    Had the TURP procedure last Wednesday. Spinal anesthetic and sedation prior to the surgery. My urologist said the operation itself lasted about half an hour (not including prep time). Stayed an extra day in the hospital as the nurses reduced the flow of the Continuous Bladder Irrigation system bit early, so the urologist suggested I stay an extra day since he could still see some clots in the tubes.. Discharged on Friday morning when able to pee. Went home without a catheter, zero pain and no pain medication required. Already been on my daily walks which is recommended; early days yet but promising and glad to be off the pills. Thanks for the video information.

    Excellent video with very informative content! I know that it's been a year since you posted it but it's still relevant today. I had a TURP done 8 years ago (age 61), knowing that my prostate would keep growing. So here it is, November 2024 (age 69) and I had an emergency situation (on the weekend) where the CT scan showed a full bladder with an enlarged prostate and after 3 attempts to put a catheter in they had to ambulance me to another hospital where a urologist was waiting for me. After the scope of the urethra, bladder, and prostate (with a lot of fentanyl) he was able to insert the catheter. Now I'm just waiting to get the surgery scheduled. But this time I won't have a TURP, but rather a HoLEP (which should eliminate the need to ever have one again.). That was the downside to the TURP; the prostate will continue to grow. Thanks again for your video and links to the products that I will still need for this upcoming surgery.

    My last post on this, the surgery was last Wednesday the catheter was removed this morning after they filled my bladder to make sure I could pee before I left, wasn't a problem. I have not had an issue all day, very little bleeding and no leaking. At this point the worst part of it was the worry leading up to the surgery, lol, what a relief to actually pee instead of standing there trying to get the water works to actually work, no problem emptying. I started feeling plugged up about three years ago and from time to time it would get really bad at times to where I could barely go, four or five trips at to the bathroom at night I wish I had done this sooner than I did, it would have alleviated a lot of worry. Thanks again for the video it helped me before the surgery, anyone else thinking they need this just do it.

    Just had TURP yesterday and watched this. Well done. I have fair pain threshold but no shame in taking them to stay ahead of pain. It’s stressful enough going through this without having to grit your teeth and tough out the discomfort/ pain. 10mg of oxy/tylonal was made available to me every 4 hrs just in case. I made due with every 5 or 6 hrs and will stretch it out longer most likely.
    They were going to send me home the same day but the idea of schlepping back later if things got complicated was not appealing. Insist on at least one night in hospital IMHO.
    IM 70yrs old but pretty active and still employed. Have prostate cancer + outside the prostate. Don’t freak out if you get this diagnosis…sounds like I may die from something else if the hormone and radiation treatment are successful. Any questions for me are welcome as well.

    Thanks for the video, I had the green light laser procedure about 4 years ago, could urinate better but not as great as I thought I would. Had much pain and urgency issues for about 8 weeks. This past spring I started to have some troubles, he put a camera in and said a lot of the prostate had grown back. To start with he told me it was about the size of a baseball and when I started this journey my psa was 14 and got as high as 26. I've had two biopsies and have all come back clear. He recommended the TURPS, needless to say I was very nervous about the procedure. They put me under and when I woke up I was in the hospital bed with a catheter and an IV. They ran 20 very large bags of fluid throughout the afternoon and evening through my IV. By mid morning they took the catheter out. Had lunch got up and walked around, went to the restroom, urinated so hard it about through me backwards. Went home and drank water constantly. Don't think I even had to take a pain pill, I did take the AZO for burning about a week. Had about a week of a little bit of urgency, but soon after was great. 8 months out and still doing terrific. He said he sent about a 3oz cup of tissue for testing and it came back negative for any cancer, also found out my last psa was at 6. So if you are reading this and hesitant about the procedure, I can tell you I would do it again in a heartbeat

Going for a half hour walk every day. Getting a bit better but accept that it will take a while..... Still stinging a bit. Only pain control offered is paracetamol which I used for a couple of days. Day 6 Post TURP. Procedure was at 5 pm on a Friday and was discharged around 720pm that same day. Was instructed to drink 2 + liters a day of bottled water and follow up on Monday for removal of catheter. Hook it on shower door and tape it with a strip of medical tape to your leg after your showers as explained in this video. The catheter used on me only had 2 outlet towards the bag and not 3. I only saw a small blood clot on day 3, No pain at all for me, not even when I peed. I used the depends for 3 days only as I stopped staining them after I peed, then just gym shorts. Catheter was removed on Monday, was given 200 cc thru catheter and was told after removal I had to pee out at least half to be sent home without it and I did, peed out 150 cc. Was then told to keep drinking the water and not lift more than a gallon of milk until the end of the month and was given a follow up appointment in 3 months. Guess everyone is different because I have had zero pain or maybe they making small changes to this procedure that is better for the patient. I didn’t even need the pills for the pain when you pee, need to return them to Walmart. So far so good.

      I had TURP operation recently on 11.07.24 - I spent 2 nights in hospital plus 4 nights after readmission (1.1/2 week later) due to blood clot…. horrible moments. I should have research and seek for a 2nd medical opinion before undergoing TURP. available (e.g. green lights laser) rather than just accepting that should have TURP due to my frequent visit to toilet at night to pee.

    I'm 41 years old guy. I had HOLEP Holmium laser surgery last year due to chronic prostatitis and serious problems with urinate (residual urine of more than 100 mL after urination). The Doctors said Holmium laser is better than TURP so i decided to undergo this surgery. The day after the surgery they put a catheter out of my bladder and fill it to full - i had urinary retention 380 ml. So they decided to catheterize me for 2 weeks, the doctor said this might be caused by urethra swelling after the surgery. 2 weeks later the doctor pull out the catheter and i could urinate quite well - wide stream, no problems with beginning of urination. After 1.5 month i started to have problems with uronation again (narrow stream, i had to wait long for urine beginning, urinary hesitancy). After another 2 months i almost couldn't urinate - i had to sit and push the urine out of my bladder using my abdominal press , the stream was narrow like thread or more ofter rather drops of urine than stream. The cystoscopy showed critical narrowing of the bladder neck and i my bladder's neck was incised , TUNI surgery. Is that possible that the narrowing of the bladder neck is the complication of Holmium laser prostate surgery? Can this problem returns all the time even if the bladder was incisted and it is quite wide now? Sorry for my English, i don't use this language on daisy basis and thank for advice, i appreciate that

    THANK YOU for this video. I know it's old now, but helped me a bunch. I am 20 hours post-op. Thought I would give back / help any others getting ready to go through this. CAHike&Bike nailed it, but my experience (so far) varied a little. Arrived for surgery at 2 PM. Went HOME at about 6:30 PM. Picked up DelTaco on the way (hadn't eaten all day). No pain meds and no pain (even today). I understand the "discomfort" now, though. For me, I felt like an atomic level full bladder until about 9 or 10 PM. Stuff was draining as it should, but man, I felt the need to pee bad. By midnight it was still critical, but getting better. Middle of the night much better. Now, the next day, still feel like I could go pee, but I can forget about it and let the Cathy do it's thing. I am drinking a lot and it's flowing through.
    This was an easy procedure, and while there is a lot of healing ahead of me, I think the rest is just time. I don't expect complications as I am healthy and recover from stuff pretty well. All the best to any other guys in our situation.

I also really appreciate one of bits of info you provided that is helping me immediately. I had my second instance of urine retention in the last six months and of course had to have a catheter inserted, besides the pain with the catheter going in once I got home the worst part was the dried blood and hair that gets stuck around the tube and the head , I thought this I time I would get a ahead of the curve and wash it away several times a day and put Vaseline around the head and tube which didn’t seem to help much, but your suggestion to use something like K-Y jelly made all the difference in the world. @@californiahikebike Hi - I am scheduled for TURP on 1/21 and it could not come soon enough. I am 67, physically fit and active. I have had 5 back-to-back UTI's since October. My hobby is west coast swing dancing. I compete at events nationally, mostly for fun. The prostate problems have taken a toll on me because it limits my ability to travel and have fun in retirement. For the UTI's, I have been taking a 7 to 10 day rounds of antibiotics and the UTI comes back a week later. The doctor ordered an MRI of my prostate and CT-Scans of my urinary tract and stomach. No cancer present. The MRI revealed that my prostate is extending into my bladder. The bladder is not able to empty completely. I purchased all of the items on Amazon that you recommended and will update this thread a few days after my surgery.

    Merry Christmas good sir, i wished i saw this before my procedure. Had it done on the 18th, last Monday. I was kinda worried. Im 52 and was concerned with the pain urinating afterwards. My procedure was in/out same day. In recovery the catheder was getting clogged with the blood clots. So this is where the real pain started. Dr had to change catheders to the 3 headed one that you refered to. He did so while i was awake and no numbing. Lord it hurt. Stayed 2 nights in hospital to flush bladder. Came home on Wednesday evening without catheder. They gave me the Phenazopyridine Hydrochloride (orange dye) for the burning urination. Passed the blood clots or pieces thru Saturday morning. Very painful like pulling the catheder out. Had to push hard while urinating to get them out. Relief afterwards. Urine cleared and only feeling slight burning because of the uretha discomfort from the bag. Stream looks alot better so i am hopeful that the procedure and pain will have been worth it. I should have gotten the disposable underwear thiugh. Hopefully worse is behind me. Hope your doing well as well as all the others that are dealing with the same problem. Been dealing with it for the last 5 years and doctor just now recommended this procedure ....

    Great video. Had TURP June 1. My post surgery response was considerably different than yours. Had a catheter in for about 48 hours post surgery (still in hospital). When catheter removed was pounding liquid trying to pee. Nothing. Was also constipated. About four hours later, sizable clot was discharged and was able to pee about 400 ml and also had a bowel movement. After voiding was released from hospital with no catheters. First time in three weeks. YES. Since then pretty consistent volume of urine (400ish ml). I track every pee just to get an idea of what is normal for me. My biggest issue right now (day 5) is constipation. Bottom line, although early, TURP seems to have worked for me, consistent volume of pee, stronger stream, feels like I’m emptying much better, no searching for men’s room in every store. Long term, we’ll see.

      I had a similar experience. After they took the cath out, that night each urination got progressively slower until it stopped totally. So, at 3:00 a.m. I’m digging out one of my straight catheters and got some relief. I was back at the urologist's office when they opening and was recathed. Quite a bit came out. I kept the catheter for a couple more days, then everything flowed well. I am at day eight and my urine is about the color of cherry 7-up, sometimes a bit lighter. I followed the advise and got the Depends, extra pads for regular underwear and a night bag. They would only supply a leg bag, which made the first night home (I did not stay overnight) miserable. I found the one on Amazon that would be delivered the same day and that night slept like a log. I used a coat hanger under the mattress to hang the bigger bag and everything worked well. Thanks for this very real video…I watched it before surgery, ordered everything suggested and was glad I did. I am on day eight so I just watched again…it and the comments are very reassuring. Your surgeon should perform another cystoscopy procedure to see what is happening in there. I have been back to my doctor several times since my TURPin late May. I had a blockage that he was able to dialate in the office which helped, although I am still not having a steady consistent flow after a little more than three weeks since the surgery. Best of luck.

Walked a mile this morning and then climbed stairs to my 5th floor apartment. Writing my dr now to get her opinion on when I can set-up my indoor rollers so I can spin. I'm scheduled for a TURP in a week. I've had a green light laser procedure 6.5 years ago, however the urine flow has gotten reduced again. The first time around, I wore a Foley cathetor for one month prior. I opted to wear the cathetor over the self cathetor as I could not get relief for very long using the self cathetor. My experiences with the laser seem consistent with yours here. If the cathetor is the worst part of your situation, then I should have this made.

    I don't know what pain med you were given, but Narcan (naloxone HCL) is a med that is used to reverse the effects of opioid drugs. It is the opposite of what you would want to take for pain. Otherwise, this is an informative video. I'm trying to decide which procedure too have, which is right for me. The urologist was pushing the Turp, but they all scare me.

    Hi, this is day 15 after TURP. Just wanted to give you a quick update. The burning/ stinging sensation after urinating IS Strong! but I have been managing it with those pills that you told me to get. They don’t completely wipe out the pain but it does take a strong edge of it and my urine comes out neon orange. Anyway, I still have urgencies in going to the restroom at night , but not as bad as before the surgery. Before the surgery I did spend a good while self -catherizing which became pretty easy, and strongly alleviated the frequent urgency to 90%, but now after the surgery is not necessary. Anyway, my scabs and small blood clots are coming out, but they do sting. I also was told that that my prostrate and urethra are still inflamed due to the surgery and that’s normal and it will go down and that is generating the temporary urgency that I have at night.

    • @californiahikebike
      @californiahikebike  4 месяца назад

      I think that is a bit longer than my recovery in terms of stinging etc., however still sounds like you are on the right track! The pills definitely take the edge off. Congrats.

    Hi, great video, and thanks for sharing. and i have just had Holep for enlarged prostate, very similar experience, and fully agree with the advice. I wish i had bought some of the adhesive gauze as the catheter can be a bit uncomfortable. I had to wear mine for several days. The pants and pads, oh yes, just in case, but well worth it and wear the pants at night and the pads during the day. I read the comment about delaying surgery, i did the same but having experienced chronic urinary retention, using catheters and frequent UTIs, just get the op done, it isnt worth delaying the op, i can wee now, not much at the moment but it is flowing again. I am in the UK, so the process is very similar.
