Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace. This is brilliant. What a fantastic video. I know Cornwall well many a holiday there as a child growing up in '70s and '80s but our family never visited the Scilly Isles. But to see this journey via microlight is just the best. My dad flew gliders and light aircraft and he would have loved this footage. What a way to travel, happy flying.
Great video, reminds me of my one "sea crossing" in a trike. It was a bit more primitive than yours, back in the early 1980s. We flew from the usually busy microlight "airport" at Middleton Sands, south of Heysham, across Morecambe Bay to either the old ex RAF/USAF field at Cark or the grounds of Holker Hall a little further north, can't remember which and my log book's not handy. Single cylinder 250 cc two stroke, and practically no instruments, no radio, no parachute. I had a boat's compass, bought from the local chandlers, and a climber's or hiker's cheapo altimeter. Fuel gauge was a transparent sight tube on the tank, and airspeed was the feel of wind in my face, but John had a home-made ASI on his machine. I have to admit, I felt less comfortable on that flight than any others! I got a nice photo (on film in those days, of course) of John's aircraft below me as we flew over Heysham Harbour and Lighthouse. Happy days!
Wow, amazing to see 😍... thanks for filming it 👌. I had a gorgeous week in the Isles of Scilly about 20 years ago and flew by helicopter... It was as clear and beautiful as your flight... as you say.. Could be anywhere in the Caribbean. We've also been to the Maldives and I think the Isles of Scilly are as beautiful 💖🙏🏖️
I flew from Newquay to the Isles of Scilly Isles for world pilot gig championships. Six in a plane, pilot had the cockpit door open all the way, we could see what he saw so to speak. Awesome!

@@davesmicrolightadventures Can't beat the beauty of the Scilly Isles in a flexwing. Perfect for coastline flying. Subs will soar 😀Have you visited Lundy yet?
Hi, I have funke panel mount radio and transponder, a radio is a must really for safety as much as anything else, a transponder is very useful but neither are mandatory requirements for general use, the places we go they are needed
Hi, i had a lifejacket and a personal locator beacon, I don't carry an immersion suit as they are just too heavy and bulky for a flexwing, especially with all the other supplies and equipment I needed
Great Video Dave, I know nothing of what these do, so I've got so many questions, did I hear you say on the return that you would be up to 3500ft, what's the max height one of these can do, what kind of speeds do they reach, and do you get there and back on one tank. Sorry if my questions are naive, just intrigued that's all. 👍🏻
Hi, glad you liked the video, I was flying at 3900ft on the way back, across to the mainland, max altitude is governed by controlled airspace really, although above 10,000ft you may need oxygen !!. I usually fly at 80mph which gives good fuel consumption as is comfortable, I can fly at 100mph if required but it starts to get a bit too noisy, maximum permitted speed on my machine is 120mph
I usually carry 2 x 10 litre plastic fuel cans on the back seat for long journeys, although it was only an hour each way on this trip which used less than half a tank
@deanmcbride8747 hi, yes you do need a licence, these machines can vary from about £1500 to £60,000, the most common one, the quantum, can be had for anything from £3000 to around £9000
Very nice! I like your editing and choice of music, but your voice was very quiet compared to the music volume. We've tried a few times to get to St. Marys but the wx has always been against us. One day...
@@davesmicrolightadventures That's correct; no longer an active airfield but not disused. There is a radome on the airfield and if you 'had to land' there - in an emergency - the MoD Police based there very soon appear!
I was looking at your fuel gauge. You got almost all the way there and it barely budged. Then by the time you landed it was almost down to half. What was going on?
Hi, the fuel gauges are not that accurate, you have to get used to them individually to make any use of it, also the plane is at a different angle when flying compared to on the ground so that makes it read differently as well, I don't rely on it that much, I know how much fuel I'm carrying and the burn rate so I can be pretty sure how much I have, also, the friend I usually fly with has a ridiculously accurate fuel monitor fitted to his plane, we're almost always spot on to the half litre when we fill up
How are you finding the parts and servicing since the Indian company took over P & M? (I used to work for them (P & M) before they went into receivership!) Also, are you wearing a goon suit and have any extra safety equipment flying over water?
Cool, glad you're sorted! I still have a little puff of pride when i see the struts, cables and wings, wondering whether they were any that I had made! 🤔
Maybe it is a good idea to put some stats at the end of your video like: flighttime, distance, etc. Might make an already interesting video even more interesting.

@@davesmicrolightadventures ah, thanks for answering. Fab video, fly safe friend
Brilliant video, thanks for sharing it.
Can I ask the name of the music you used as it was so nice.
Hi, most of the music I use comes from soundstripe which is part of the power director video editor, the clips I used in this video were called, chasing the northern lights, come and see, and, interim, probably not very helpful if you don't have power director, regards, dave
Many thanks for the music info, Ive managed to find them on youtube cheers once again.
What a great and awesome flight dave,Thank you Always for flying video.Cheers mate!, if i ask ,which efis instrument is that Dave?.
Hi, it's a kanardia horus 80
Under microlight training and I hope one day will fly to kenya from France. P&M aviation company has got mort reliable MICROLIGHT FLEXWING AIRCRAFTS
Thanks for posting Dave. I'm new to your channel and am always looking out for flexwing Microlight vids so as to appreciate the spectacular pictures at snail pace. Are annotations feasible when editing? Keep posting!
Glad you enjoyed the video, and thanks for watching, the videos of our trip to the North cape last year are all on my channel as well if you want a bit more adventure
Annotation reqd "Portreath on R" etc
@@davesmicrolightadventures Can't beat the beauty of the Scilly Isles in a flexwing. Perfect for coastline flying. Subs will soar 😀Have you visited Lundy yet?
We havent managed to get there yet, we flew past it on the way from devon into wales@CD-ie3fp
Youre absolutely right, i need to think about that more@paulgraham2371
I'm interested to learn of the instruments you have in your 'cockpit'. Do you have a transponder, and is it mandatory?
Hi, I have funke panel mount radio and transponder, a radio is a must really for safety as much as anything else, a transponder is very useful but neither are mandatory requirements for general use, the places we go they are needed
@@davesmicrolightadventures
Hi Dave, Great adventure. What safety equipment did you carry in the event of a ditching?
If you need oxygen above 10,000 ft, how does that affect your engine's performance?@@davesmicrolightadventures
Hi, ive never really noticed any difference in engine performance at altitude although the climb rate drops off quite a bit the higher you go
Hi Dave, Is your leading edge inflatable? I've never flown a flexwing.
Hi, no its not, the shape is formed by internal battens
Great video's.. I would love to do this hobby. How much does one cost. Do you need a licence to fly one. Awsome. Dean 🇬🇧
@deanmcbride8747 hi, yes you do need a licence, these machines can vary from about £1500 to £60,000, the most common one, the quantum, can be had for anything from £3000 to around £9000
nice! altitude & distance ? so cool over water indeed! :) ty
I flew at 3900ft across the water, it's approximately 30 miles across
nice ride! :)
Thanks, and thanks for watching
Fly around Saltash, river Tamar and the rest of the area. Being based in Asia, I miss it. Please.
I will look into it 👍
How Long to the flight take, to and from?
@@emgee44 hi, it was around 1hour ten mins each way
I was nervous crossing that water with you!
Hi, we're getting used to it now, we've done quite a few water crossings in the last year
@@davesmicrolightadventures did you have a life vest on?
Very nice! I like your editing and choice of music, but your voice was very quiet compared to the music volume. We've tried a few times to get to St. Marys but the wx has always been against us. One day...
Looks fun
@@modelrailwaynoob it certainly is 😁
What is the crossing time?
Hi, it was about 30 mins over the water
The music is beautiful, makes me want to fly a microlight through my dreams
thank you for your comments, i'm glad you enjoyed it
Beautiful - at 3:04 is that Newquay airport?
I believe it's Portreath disused air base
@@davesmicrolightadventures That's correct; no longer an active airfield but not disused. There is a radome on the airfield and if you 'had to land' there - in an emergency - the MoD Police based there very soon appear!
I was looking at your fuel gauge. You got almost all the way there and it barely budged. Then by the time you landed it was almost down to half. What was going on?
Hi, the fuel gauges are not that accurate, you have to get used to them individually to make any use of it, also the plane is at a different angle when flying compared to on the ground so that makes it read differently as well, I don't rely on it that much, I know how much fuel I'm carrying and the burn rate so I can be pretty sure how much I have, also, the friend I usually fly with has a ridiculously accurate fuel monitor fitted to his plane, we're almost always spot on to the half litre when we fill up
@@davesmicrolightadventures Thanks. I guess there is a dipstick to use on the ground. But I suppose you just fill it whenever you can.
You can see the contents when on the ground, and yes, we fill up whenever we can just to be safe
How are you finding the parts and servicing since the Indian company took over P & M? (I used to work for them (P & M) before they went into receivership!)
Also, are you wearing a goon suit and have any extra safety equipment flying over water?
Hi, it was an absolute nightmare to start with, gs aviation now has pretty much everything in stock
I don't wear an immersion suit or anything, but I do have a lifejacket and a personal locator beacon
Cool, glad you're sorted! I still have a little puff of pride when i see the struts, cables and wings, wondering whether they were any that I had made! 🤔
What was the max altitude you flew at !??
Hi, max altitude on this flight was approximately 3900 ft
Maybe it is a good idea to put some stats at the end of your video like: flighttime, distance, etc. Might make an already interesting video even more interesting.
Nice idea, I'll maybe do that on the next one
nice yes ty
