  • This series is all about video game characters who have left me in awe at their power, whether it's the ability to survive a boulder falling on their head, colossal earth-shattering strength, sheer dominance over the game they're in, etc.
    The nineteenth character in the series might not be powerful in the usual sense, but in the context of his profession, there's no one who will give you as much grief...
    A sorta sequel to this video is now out: • The Most Powerful Char...

      this case is when i really started to love Maya more than ever. she can be a bit naive at times, but she's got a good heart and an excellent sense of morale. she's selfless when it comes to defending what she feels is right. she's the perfect sidekick to Phoenix, never giving up even when he is feeling the pressure. this is also what made the final case of justice for all so impactful to me - even when KIDNAPPED and STARVED she keeps her morale high and even tells Phoenix to *get a guilty verdict* even though it would mean her death. Maya is amazing.

      Phoenix, rookie that he is in the first game, had a bad habit of confronting his suspects outside the courtroom. It happened before with the culprits of cases 2 and 3 as well. In case 2 the culprit responds by punching him and calling up the prosecutor's office to accuse Phoenix of the murder he was just investigating. And in Case 3... the culprit summoned a Yakuza squad on his butt and Gumshoe's timely intervention was the only thing that got him out of his botched interrogation attempt alive.
      Thankfully Phoenix is much smarter about it in the sequels, where he tries to *avoid* contact with his suspects once he has decisive evidence on them and plans only to confront them with it in court.

    Phoenix can also be considered a pretty powerful character. I mean, he defeated the most powerful prosecutors in the world and survived cross-examining some pretty awful witnesses. Pretty great in the courtroom.
    However, his durability is also pretty amazing. He's survived a fire extinguisher to the head (Case 2-1), many whip lashes (practically all of Justice for All), getting hot coffee thrown to his face without suffering burns (Case 3-2), getting bird feed thrown at him (Case 3-3), falling off a high cliff into a river with a strong current (Case 3-5), and getting hit by a car and only getting out with minor injuries (Case 4-2).

    I was reading Tv Tropes and it makes Von Karma look worse
    "Greater-Scope Villain: Nearly everything in the original trilogy can be traced back to Manfred, as his murder of Gregory Edgeworth caused the Police to seek Misty Fey’s spirit channeling in desperation, which resulted in a seance conducted by Misty that resulted in Yanni Yogi being falsely named; Redd White would then leak the seance to the public, resulting in his rise to power. Misty was then exiled and the Kurain Technique was disgraced, motivating Mia to become an attorney when she was older. Dahlia (and Iris) were thrown out, kickstarting Dahlia's life of crime and would poison Diego Armando, Mia would then take Phoenix Wright under her wing and was later murdered by Redd White to cover up his crimes. Diego came back as Godot, and killed Misty to kill Dahlia. And again, why did all this happen? Because Gregory got Manfred his first ever penalty, ruining his perfect record."

      @@HardGuess That particular part of Rise from the Ashes is pure sewage and should've been cut. It near-totally nullifies Edgeworth's character development from the prick he acted like in 1-2 and 3-4, not to mention it contradicts instances from earlier in the same game where Edgeworth knowingly presented clearly shady evidence and tried to delay the trial in an effort to get his own friend convicted.
      That's a problem I have with some of the DS-era Ace Attorney games. For some reason they want to remove a lot of the complication surrounding Edgeworth and make it seem like Edgeworth was always a good guy, like 1-5 retconning his more shady aspects, or AAI-4 flashing back to the pre-development asshole seen in 3-4 and making him act nearly identical to his post-development self.
      I actually believe Trials and Tribulations is the only game to really hit the mark with Young Edgeworth, even if the writing is a little strange at times. He tampers with the crime scene and only presents the evidence he took when the question of where it disappeared to becomes relevant(which is kinda weird given Phoenix has engaged in similar evidence-submitting shenanigans), directly insults Mia out loud in a courtroom, and just acts smug and contemptible in general, but he hasn't been Von Karma-lite for so long that he's totally heartless. After all, when Terry poisons himself, it's Edgeworth that tries to stop the trial so he can get help.

    • @fink_rat
      @fink_rat 2 года назад +3

      @@samgreenblatt7074 I never saw Edgeworth as the guy to forge evidence to win. I only saw Edgeworth as a damn good prosecutor with impeccable strategy. von Karma is the one I saw and went "he forges evidence." In fact, Edgeworth either uses or sets up one or Phoenix's tricks, using legit evidence as a trap.

    • @mint7442
      @mint7442 3 месяца назад

      @@fink_ratomg yes this, I’m sick of people acting like he needed to forge evidence to have meaningful character development. He has been a prosecutor for only like 4 years at the time of this game so it’s not like he has an unbelievable win record like Von karmas 40 years. Also he does learn and grow as a character from believing everyone is guilty and thinking his record is what’s important to seeing that the truth is what he really wants to fight for. This idea is continued and expanded upon in the next game. Plus he’s a pompous ass when we first meet him and still uses everything at his disposal to win, such as seeing the autopsy report wasn’t in his favour and asking for a second to see if he could get anything more helpful. It doesn’t need to be forged, it’s still a really annoying thing to do for such a small change in results.
      Also I honestly find it hard to believe that the same guy who practically sabotaged his case to find the real murderer would be the same person who was still at that point faking evidence to win. He wants to win his cases because he thinks everyone is guilty, because his father’s killer went free and he doesn’t want anyone else to suffer that sort of injustice.
      Basically people misunderstand his character, he isn’t supposed to be evil at any point in the games, he is just an absolute pos at first and Phoenix slowly shows him he doesn’t need to be that.
      Also something people don’t mention a lot but Edgeworth was straying from Von Karma far before the DL-6 trial. For example, we see in the flashback case in future games that he looked and dressed more like Von Karma, even having sprites more similar to him and being an even more awful ass to Mia. He was never meant to be a mini Von karma, Von karma is meant to be him if all the bad things people believe about him were true

As age grows on you, your body begins to break down where keeping himself alive was possibly a lot harder on him and without really knowing, he was poisoned from the bullet that started to also break down inside him. Due to the trial and losing, stress levels had skyrocketed and with a couple of head bangs against the wall, that made him extremely sick to die without any kind of hint.

    On the subject of Ace Attorney, can we just talk about how INVINCIBLE Phoenix himself is?! He and Maya were nearly "erased" by some mafia goons, he's been tased (as shown in this video), he was bashed with a fire extinguisher which gave him amnesia, several lashings from Franziska, was nearly poisoned by his ex-girlfriend, fell 40 feet from a burning bridge into the freezing rapids of the Eagle River with only a cold whereas he was lucky they even found his body, had hot coffee thrown at his face, got hit by a car that sent him flying 10 feet off the ground, escaped a courtroom that was set to explode, faced off against a death row convict and an international superspy, and broke his back putting him out of commission for the whole day. HOW IS THIS MAN STILL ALIVE?!

    After playing Ace Attorney blind for the first time recently, you gotta admit: Despite his cold-blooded nature and cheap tricks, von Karma is an absolute genius!
    His case was 99% perfect. It was so convincing that I initially thought Edgeworth really *was* the killer, and that the game was *designed* to make Wright lose the trial. After all; it's impossible to defend someone who really committed a crime! Thankfully, through very careful observation, there was a tiny rabbit hole which eventually led to a Not Guilty verdict, including the DL-6 incident.

    There are literally two separate times in this case where people make literally last minute saves, once when Maya has to go to jail just to force a contradiction out of someone, and another where Phoenix has to convince the judge to rescind a guilty verdict just to let Larry testify after he stop the trial from ending at the very last moment. No prosecute in the entire series has forced this level of drastic measures nor has ever been this close to winning. That should show you well enough the power of Von Karma.

      I have but tbh I was a little disappointed by SoJ. The final case felt deliberately over the top, the final villain felt cliche and unmemorable compared to villains in past games, and Apollo's past history seems to get more convoluted with every new game. Plus as someone who was never of fan of the series using spirit channeling deus ex machina, having it be gone from game 4 and 5 was refreshing for me, only for it to return in 6 again. Spoilers also below:
      And they STILL never acknowledge that Apollo is the brother of Trucy. They still never find out that they're siblings even tho the audience has known since game 4.

    You know, I think that the most hurt out of all the events happened here is Franziska. I mean, think about it. She adored her father and for her to learn this would have put such a dark spot in her heart. Also, taking account of the fact that Manfred most probably committed suicide in the jail(I mean, he killed a man just because he got a penalty, so it's very possible. Also the fact that Franziska never mentions her father too much in the second game and is not taking her revenge in his name but for herself, showing that she has lost faith in her father after all this makes it more concrete that he might have committed suicide) and for Edgeworth to "turn his back on Von Karma family". It makes her revenge plot that much more tragic and heartbreaking.
    Also, writing all this, that image of her Scruffy tracker going on in the end of second game in the hotel flashes in my mind. I'm just glad that her doubts were cleared by the end of that game.

And there's lasting impact for Edgeworth as a character. And for Franziska. But for the player, his role is contained to a single case only. Meanwhile in game 3, 4, and 5, Dahlia, Kristoff and the phantom all have game wide presences and affect almost every case in their respective games. That impact is upon the whole game and not just a single case.

    You forgot to point out that in The Final Case, The Judge was shocked to see Von Karma actually follow Court Proceedings and say "The Prosecution is Ready". Rightfully so, Von Karma is too arrogant for something he deems so meaningless. This only means ONE thing, he's nervous... He's afraid, he just doesn't want to show it. Phoenix showing him that letter has got him on the edge, The Bullet that Maya snatched from him will the the final push to his downfall.

    It shows you how memorable he is when he only showed up for 1 case in the main games, but he's one of the most memorable prosecutors

    Von Karma is so powerful he didn’t immediately die from the head trauma of bashing his head into a wall 5000 times.

    Von Karma: lmao wouldn't it be funny if you cross-examine the parrot
    Phoenix: lmao yeah sure
    Von Karma: you weren't supposed to do that.

    This video is arguably my favourite from whoisthisgit.
    The way he analyses one of the most DESPICABLE characters in Ace Attorney and how much grief he brought him, really makes me relate to git X)
