“The Whole Mission” of the Church
Excerpts from ECC’s Theology 5030 Class
1. Breaking Down Barriers
Luke 4:17-21 (NIV)
‘and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:
“The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,
to set the oppressed free,
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. He began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”’
Matthew 9:10-11 (NIV)
‘While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and sinners came and ate with him and his disciples. When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”
Matthew 19:14 (NIV)
‘Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”’
Galatians 3:28 (NIV)
“There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free,
nor is there male and female, for you are all one
in Christ Jesus.”
2. Bringing the Good News about Jesus to all People
Matthew 28:19 (NIV) “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,…”
TO NAME A FEW OF OUR EFFORTS:
Our congregation has been involved with supporting missionaries in Turkey (a mission to Russia to produce the “Jesus Film” in different languages), Romania, Siberia, and India.
Church members have had mission trips to Mexico, India, and Peru. And, most recently, David Reed’s trip to Nicaragua.
Locally, we support CRU, the Teen Center in West Sacramento, and have had outreach activities to the local elementary and high school.
In the past, we have been witnesses through the Mercy Coalition and hosting the homeless during the winter cold.
