I have this strange feeling that I've heard this in another life! And I think I liked it as much in that life as I do in this one!

    Shady Grove, my little love
    Shady Grove I know
    Shady Grove, my little love
I'm bound for the Shady Grove
Cheeks as red as a blooming rose
    Eyes of the deepest brown
You are the darling of my heart
Stay til the sun goes down
    Shady Grove, my little love
    Shady Grove I know
    Shady Grove, my little love
I'm bound for the Shady Grove
Went to see my Shady Grove
    She's standing in the door
Shoes and stockin's in her hand
Little bare feet on the floor
    Shady Grove, my little love
    Shady Grove I know
    Shady Grove, my little love
I'm bound for the Shady Grove
Wished I had a big fine horse
    Corn to feed him on
Pretty little girl, stay at home
    Feed him when I'm gone
    Shady Grove, my little love
    Shady Grove I know
    Shady Grove, my little love
I'm bound for the Shady Grove

Such a beautiful, timeless mountain song. It also served as the tune for several grand old ballads.

Covered by Tom Petty's group, Mudcrutch. So, I put both versions in my Petty playlist. I put both versions in my Petty playlist. Thanks for the upload!

Im sure I've heard that lyric 'pretty little girl stay at home feed him when I'm gone' before somewhere

Many of the old Appalachian songs have been blended since they were first introduced 300 years ago.

@@hallerd come to think of it, im sure i heard it in the song 'jubilee', Appalachian like you said, and a song that jean ritchie has played as well

The lyric is similar to the bluegrass tune, "Pig in a Pen" which uses the lyric, "All I need is a pretty little girl to feed him when I'm gone."

@@hallerd I think lots of the blending happened in England and Scotland before the tunes came to America. Lots of the Child Ballads share lyrics.

@@hallerd Funnily enough this video I made does something very similar

Why doesn’t he take his horse when he goes? 🤔
