Hello friends, today we will discuss phimosis.
Phimosis means that the foreskin is not properly retracting, which is very common in young children. Usually, in one to two-year-old children, the skin does not retract. However, as they grow older, between the ages of 2 to 6, the skin typically becomes loose, and the foreskin retracts. If this doesn't happen, about 1 in 100 male patients might face this issue. Due to the lack of proper hygiene in this area, it can lead to repeated infections, swelling, small cuts, and pain. If these problems are causing significant discomfort, treatment is available.
Diabetic patients are more prone to this issue because infections do not heal quickly due to diabetes, and even a slight infection can escalate, making the skin hard and difficult to retract. Over time, the problem worsens, and surgery becomes necessary, especially for diabetic patients. If you experience such problems, visit your doctor. They can diagnose phimosis and, if the skin is not excessively tight, prescribe ointments that might resolve the issue. However, if the condition is severe with numerous symptoms, circumcision can be an option to remove the foreskin and restore a healthy life.
There are various methods for circumcision. Traditionally, we used scissors to remove the skin and then stitched it, allowing it to heal gradually. Nowadays, with modern science, a special stapler known as the ZSR stapler is available. This stapler, named after the company that first introduced it, allows us to use a specific size based on the patient's requirements. When pressed, the stapler simultaneously cuts and applies small clips 360° around, making the procedure quick. Blood loss is minimal, and patient recovery is swift.
Stapler circumcision differs significantly from routine surgery because the cutting is uniformly circular, and stapling is simultaneous, preventing blood loss. The titanium pins used do not react with the body and fall off naturally within 10 to 15 days. Healing is typically completed within 15 days to a month. This procedure is usually a day-care process. You can visit the hospital, undergo routine tests, and have the procedure done within minutes. You can return home shortly after the procedure.
Post-stapler circumcision care is simple. You don't need to visit the hospital repeatedly. Keep the area clean, apply a simple antibiotic ointment or powder, and wrap it with a gauze piece. If you feel any discomfort, healing will occur naturally within a few days. Antibiotics or painkillers prescribed for the first few days will ensure a quick return to a healthy life.
