    This video was a sincere pleasure to watch and it is evident that a lot of care was taken into crafting it, from all the great questions that were asked to all the visual aides that accompanied the discussions. We want to send a big thank you to DoubleNegative for all the work that he put into it and to all the fans, of TES and Wayward Realms, who watched it! We hope you enjoyed the new reveals and we look forward to another collaboration in the future!

      I would absolutely want to collaborate again in the future. This was a lot of work, but it was a rewarding experience, nonetheless. Perhaps once you have some written lore for The Wayward Realms set in stone, I'd love to analyze it and get together to discuss it in detail.
      Whatever we end up doing, it'll be much shorter next time. 3 hours is a bit much.

      Keep up the appearances and get the awareness out there. There are so many open world games you guys will be competing with because the genre is very saturated. If you can, make a demo that is short and sweet that explais all the systems so journos have something to talk about as the game is slowly being fleshed out. Daggerfall was an amazing experience as a nerdy guy on his old computer in the 90s. Problem.with daggerfall were bugs, and it just seemed a bit too ambitious. The ideas behind it however always gave players a sense of true freedom that you didn't get from other games. That spirit of really being able to go and do whatever the hell you wish is what sparked my enthusiasm for the open world RPG game where you could immerse yourself in a ginormous world and have piles of stuff to do and get ovwrwhelmed by how many npcs, quest givers, and branches of story you can take and it goves feedback in the form of reputation based on if you fail or suceed. Othwr than Dagger fall my other fave was the first 2 fallout games. RPG genre needa to go back to the 90s. I think due to the age of adding expenaive voice actors was when things got bad. There was less variation in dialogue and writers couldnt have as much flexibility in what they say.

    I’ve seen most of these Ted Peterson interviews and its extremely obvious to me that he enjoyed your company in this. In many of the other ones he was hesitant to say too much about any one subject and would avoid others entirely. You really brought out his passion through your questions, you either have a talent for interviewing or your natural passion for the game inspired this interview in a masterful way. Well done both of you

    This is the best interview I watched ever, I don't like the fixed portraits style used by other RUclipsrs. They should all follow your steps.

      Thank you so much. I agree that I'm not really into the typical presentation of these kinds of interviews.
      What you're hitting on though, is part of the reason why you won't be seeing the kind of "revival" you may be hoping for this channel. For this video, I made massive alterations to my personal schedule to work on it as much as I could and get it done quickly. It still took 2 months. Whereas other channels might slap up a pair of face cams intercut with full-screen images and have it done within a week.
      My presentation style is very meticulous (perhaps overly so). Even with a lot of streamlining, I'll never be able to put out content at the same pace as other RUclips channels. This doesn't bother me, as it allows me to work at my own pace and set my own standards.
      I do intend to be more consistent at working on my videos going forward. Still, don't expect a new lore video every month. Unless I were to work on these full-time, that's just not in the cards.

    Finally got the time to watch this video, and what a pleasure it was!
    Really interesting to hear some first-hand explanations and comments regarding TES lore, and then hear how this influenced the way Wayward Realms is being shaped.
    First time I've heard of WR, but I'll definitely keep my eyes and ears ready when we start hearing more about this.

    This was very enjoyable, thanks for taking the time to put this together! Hearing Ted Peterson talk about his journey with The Elder Scrolls series and then going in depth about his new project he is working on got me very excited for it. Clearly a lot of thought and passion goes into them.

    16:31 when Ted peterson is telling the story about the werewolf being the rightful king; that is actually in Daggerfall. It is the story in the quest that involves Cyndassa the royal cook. She is located right under the king and queen on their thrones in the room on the left.

      I think it's to do with the distinction between a "creator" and a "personality." I like making these videos and I want to share them with the people who like watching. I don't like the idea of tying my own personal identity to it, or of creating and maintaining some kind of "persona."
      I'm just the guy that makes these videos. Nothing more, nothing less.

    The part in the interview where Ted goes on about the difference in games from books and movies being our interaction with the world (and the world's interaction with the player and the npc reactions to each other) is what we call emergent gameplay. It's the secret to what makes gaming unpredictable and fun. From a narrative perspective the player is partially the story telling device because what you choose to do and what path you took affects what happens on your journey and this is what has been lost in modern games where things just happen to the player and you react to those things. Daggerfall seemed to be closer to a game which adapted itself to YOU rather than just you adapting to the game throwing stuff at you. One is a two way communication and the other is being told what to do because the script writers expect you to be in a certain place at a certain time and do a set amount of choices which feels artificial. If this game goes back to the roots of role playing (ie you literally choose the kind of story you want based on your decisions on who to talk to and where you wish to go) then I will be very happy. One of the problems I have noticed is in modern open world games the choice to use voice acting to act all the npc dialogue. Although it offers job security to the voice actors who have a lot of unimportant characters to read lines for, the fact that it requires every actor to repeat the exact phrase verbatim that every other NPC in town says, makes it feel uninspired and boring. The individual townspeople lack their own personality and just talk to you in memes and you feel like you heard the same line 1000s of times already and in older rpg games that were text-dialogue-based the writer could actually give individuals their own manner of speech. Some drunken old guy will say something different to a rich aristocratic guy but the things that they say to you will vary so no two drunks have to sound the same and no two rich nobles have to repeat phrases from the set of phrases. This way the dialogue breathes life into those npc as individual PEOPLE not just containers for hearing memes. People of one town should talk different to the others and you remember the town for its interesting characters. As the ES games got more zoomed in on the map the content got more samey. Thus the "I used to be an adventurer like you.." meme which became viral because of how guards were treated as identical to one another when they didn't have to be. If Skyrim had been text based each guard could have his own set of individual dialogue to seperate one from another to get interesting conversation. Eg one could be lazy and easier to sneak up on, and the other could be serious but easier to intimidate by using your rank to threaten to ruin thier career if you tell them you are high status guy with connections. Writers can play with this more if there is no voice acting needed.

    1:34:00 This is so cool to hear, I was someone that suggested that asteroid impacts or supernovas could affect gameplay. Even if it doesn't work out I'm really impressed that such an ambitious idea is being considered.

    Right after the Beast Master bit, it sounds like Ted says design flawsophy instead of design philosophy. I don't know if that was on purpose but totally coin that Ted! The emergence of the Beast Master among other things in Daggerfall is just fantastic.

    The problem which has persisted since the release of Morrowind which this game may solve as a spiritual successor and/or tribute to Daggerfall...prepare for a mouthful...We set the bar for scale, depth, and meaningfulness where it should have stayed when Daggerfall were released, if anything we should have raised the standard from there - that was 1996! Instead, we lowered the bar and we set the bar lower so we could release games the size of Morrowind and smaller for the sake of graphics...It's more important to the quality of gaming ever since than many people realize because there weren't enough people who knew about or enjoyed the scale, depth, and meaningfulness of Daggerfall for that to be the standard we held games to...instead, we have held games to about the standard of the size of Morrowind ever since...and I'm talking about AAA+++ games with the type of funding and advertisement upward of $90 million...Just look at the scale of Vivec, the biggest city in Morrowind, which has 60 buildings the player can use, compared to Daggerfall City in Daggerfall which has 311 different buildings. Oblivion's Imperial city has 118 buildings, and the biggest city in Skyrim which there is absolutely no excuse for, Solitude, has only 31 buildings. We went from maxing out KB of RAM from MB of HDD space with hundreds cities with hundreds of buildings across 62,394 square miles of playable area, to occupying GB of RAM from TB of SSD space in order to play games with "cities" with 31 buildings in them on maps 16 square miles...Yet there are more programmers, game development is easier and cheaper than ever before, and we have enough computing power for out PCs to be able to mine Ethereum while you're playing...There is absolutely no excuse for the video gaming industry to be in the shape that it's in...It's just such a shame...because we all know we got to the state we're in because game development's been made all about money...and graphics...The truth of the matter is that the talent is there and the computing resources are there, we just have to make it about the love of what we're trying to do again, we were like that in the 90s and we can be like that again - almost like getting back our better selves.

    Marvelous video I power through it in one sitting , there is a lot I would like to discuss like they are various points in which I agree with both of you and some that I couldn't fully be onboard with ,like for example the races, to me at least they should be ramifications for which race you are if not what is the appeal of one race to another some pros and some cons while I understand the basis of those mecanism that mr ted proposes I think it would be more ...immersive? To have a way to have two different ways to distinguish your character 1 your race obviously maybe some passives but nothing game breaking that makes you more adaptable to something's and 2 your culture like per example let's say in TES world , that you are s orc but one which comes from the imperial city you have never touched a sword or a hammer in your life but you because of your background are literate and we'll studied , perhaps it is a little more difficult to you to grasp your magicka power or something and it could come a little i more easy to have s weapon but this does not define you as a person or vice versa what I mean at least fore is to have 2 ways to make your character unique ones passive from your race and another from your culture perse or thats my opinion at least

      The general idea is to give bonuses and not negatives, whether that be through racial bonus or cultural bonus. Otherwise you just make all of one race have a negative attribute that ultimately makes no sense, like all orks having low intelligence or all goblins being bad at speech. There is nothing the player really gains from negative racial traits and it even makes the world a little less believable, because not everyone of a given people will fall under the same mold.

      so if i understand it , the idea is to make everyone start lets say with 0 in whatever be it magic or combat or what have you but thanks to racial and or cultural aspects that value will change ; per example you re a high class elf or maybe you have plus 10 in magic affinity but 0 in hand to hand it doesn't mean that you are bad ,only that you "may" be much more proficient in another area but it is a matter of player choice if he wants to go in that direction or not.

    1:20:01 I like that Ted is addressing this. The Redguard lore is stereotypical and implies people with brown skin are good at sports but not as intelligent, and in Dark Elf lore they were originally pale but were "punished" with dark skin, etc. That is racist.

    imo dragon breaks were not needed and only ruined things; I'd rather had multiple endings on the other games than a need to explain the inconsistencies they create because it is a game first. The games sometimes happen hundreds of year later, we don't need to know which ending was the official one.

      Only Skyrim was hundreds of years ahead ( In the mainline games). Also what happened in daggerfall was so important that it was kinda necessary to know what happened. I do wish they chose an ending instead of doing a dragon break though.

    1:20:10 How many bushmen do you see becoming rocket scientists? Not many, I wager. That's not because they lack the capacity to become one, it's because their culture doesn't accentuate progressive sciences and technologies in the way that modern cultures do. Their focus is on traditions and tribal unity, which means that they have not developed in the ways other cultures have, and of course also means they have certain cultural qualities that other cultures may have lost. If bushmen tried becoming rocket scientists, they'd have to start pretty early on in their lives and even then may not achieve the same level as individuals born into cultures that actively develop and promote these advances, and that's before considering genetic predispositions which could lean them further toward or away from being effective at that task. That is to say, there are genetic traits that are associated with neurological development that define traits like aggression, social conformity, and curiosity. Any of these traits among others may be more strongly represented among one group than another. That isn't a condemnation, it's a simple biological reality. There's plenty of room for individual choice in spite of genetic or cultural predisposition. I would say that denying that is what would be racist, to suggest that an individual is defined exclusively by their race and nothing else.
    Racial bonuses in RPGs are less about race and more about culture, but it is a fact that people within a given culture were historically of a common race. That's not racism, it's sociology. Fantasy games are written to be reflective of known human history and mythology, so the inclusion of certain historical sociological truths is inevitable. Calling it racist only emboldens those who would brow-beat those who speak the truth, prolonging this downward spiral into madness that western culture is subjecting itself to at present. If you want to be respectful towards people of different races, stop alienating them from real-world factors while acknowledging their individual merits. Pretending our cultures and genetics have no influence over our lives blunts the friggin' miracle that is a self-determined individual choice. Nord may be influenced by thousands of years of his people drinking and raiding, but it's his or her personal decision to become a spiritual leader of the tribe or even leave the homeland to become a great cartographer that makes the character compelling. Culture can be as much something to aspire to as it can be the starting point of a longer journey; neither answer is the correct one.
    Also, saying that a "dark-skinned character" is inferior to a light-skinned character because they have less intelligence -- that's extremely misleading. Intelligence is only a 'superior' trait if intelligence is what your culture values. If your culture values stamina, resolve, strength, charisma, agility -- any one of those qualities could be considered "superior" in a given culture. Additionally, orcs aren't just inclined toward being warriors because they are orcs, they are simply physiologically stronger and probably have much greater testosterone. There's nothing wrong with those qualities, and to suggest that becoming a mystic is a superior path is just as biased as considering intelligence to be 'superior' to the aforementioned traits. So much of this pseudo-intellectual debate about racism taking place in western culture these days comes from a place of people who grew up in western culture prioritizing their own cultural preferences and seeking to uniformly impose those biases on others. Even just within America, there are subcultures that value intelligence and ingenuity, and there are other subcultures that value hard work and reliability. Neither culture is bad, but they are distinct subcultures that really can only exist in a place like America, as large as it is and as many people from different backgrounds as there are.
    I say all this to say, there's nothing wrong with preferencing cultural bonuses over racial bonuses, but to pretend that different racial cultures don't bring something unique and engaging to the table that others may not takes away from both the realism and the essential genuine-ness that breathes life into any narrative that attempts to use the human experience as a launchpad. I just wish people would stop treating every one of another race with kid-gloves. Talk about this kinda thing like a responsible, considerate adult. Period. Especially white people; this white guilt-crap is becoming a serious impediment in a country that is as ethnically diverse as America.

      In The Elder Scrolls' character creator, it doesn't ask you what location you're from, it asks what you look like. Saying that someone who looks brown is less intelligent, is racist. Also, what is this rant about "bushmen"? Every nation in Tamriel has metal weapons, fabric clothing, etc. They are mostly on the same level technologically speaking.
      Saying "Orcs are stronger than humans" is not racist because they are two different species. But the issue is that Redguards, Imperials, and Nords are not different species, they are all the same species. A lion and a tiger are both big cats, but they are different species. All humans are the same species, though. Whether or not you like reading books or lifting weights is not based on your genetics, it's based on what hobbies you made the decision to pursue.

      @@ImCptnAwesome Many Asians are lactose intolerant. Like, an above average number, as I understand it. Many of the top athletes globally are of African descent. Genetic makeup and cultural impact are not factors that can be so easily swept under the rug. Nor should they be. When people allow a fear of a label to affect their willingness to acknowledge basic, observable biological and inter-societal realities, we all lose as a species.

    I understand his point on races in game, but it isn’t really a fair comparison to real world racism. In Tamriel, an Argonian has a completely separate form background to that of a Khajiit, or a Dark Elf, or a Nord. I mean people make fun of armed guards as “fantasy black people”, but they’re so much richer than that, coming perhaps from a parallel world with different values, gods and world views. The thing that makes Tamriel such a realistic world is that there are distinct differences between the species, which is something Oblivion really pushed out the door. Morrowind and the racism present was very much present wherever you go, and that is a very realistic interpretation of how racism has existed in the real world. Imagine if on earth, we found out that people on Australia were sentient big people, and not Aboriginals. Do you think they would be treated the same way we treat people based on race or do you think the cultural clash would be much wider?

      If an in-game Nord character doesn't like Khajiits because he thinks they are sneaky, that is a fictional character's opinion and a part of the storytelling. The player has a choice to view that Nord as having fair judgment, or the player might think that Nord is a jerk.
      But if a video game developer tries to say that brown humans have a genetically inferior intellect, that is racist.

      @@ImCptnAwesome That's very true. I think people misinterpret culture and race a lot. For example, when the Spanish went to South America, they didn't meet people who were "less intelligent", they met a culture which had different values and was at a different level of technology. I think this is often what is presented in most video games.
      A solid in-game example would be how High Elves often have higher intelligence than say a Nord. It's not necessarily biological difference, it is largely the culture both are immersed in. Altmer value intellectual pursuits over Nords, who have a warrior culture.

    Pick a side of the fence, Ted, and stay on it.
    imho Races have their flaws and boons equally. Using the ES races specifically there as examples : Argonians breathe under water ; they grew up around it after all and evolved that ability, and no other race has this. Makes sense. Bosmer are always in the wild and have resistances to diseases and the ability to have animals called to their aid. Makes sense. Animalistic races have paws which wont support using boots. Makes sense. Even Pillars of Eternity sports this logic : Some races have disproportionate heads and cannot support helms. Makes sense... the logic's solid. Int, Wis, Str, and other bonuses or bane come from lives where those traits are supported or shunned. Makes sense. If Orcs deem that magic is heresy against hard work for many generations it would indeed make sense that the cultural stigma has led to a genetic level of alteration where their not having used or dealt with magic for generations leaves them at a hindrance to use it.
    No offence Ted, but you've a way with saying " 'Yeah sure' when people question 'Is this something?' ". As if you'll agree until they find it reproachable, then you'll hop that bandwagon too. Either that or your interviews are too hard-scripted. I can understand that you want the largest audience to sell product to. I get it. I can understand that many may not like details here or there. But for god sakes firmly plant your feet somewhere. Better to disappoint some for their lack of enjoyment with a particular flavor than to go so very bland and unattached that the mildness isn't to appealing to any.
    Get with your backers, the coders, the lore makers who are with yourself and set a solid end result into the idioms of things. You cannot cave to every crabmen and each other idea coming in each time as they come. Otherwise you'll be the next Star Citizen, due for release in -2028- er... -2050- er.... -3147- er..... TBA.
    As for what you've agreed to in the crab men : Will they be cousins to the larger variants that are homes in ES3? Will they be the AD&D variant? Elaborate without compunction. Making the game already has many with baited breath. Be generous on making the lure even keener to the fish, right? Create a YT trailer sans stats but a creative sort of peer into singular things. Perhaps it's not so bad to cease holding your own breath and killing the curiosity of those wanting to look forward to or step around the oncoming event.
    Also your answer on the Death Knight playing spectral tag with another undead was utter crap. Just saying. When someone asks "What's he doing?" They don't mean wax evasive and make his activity in the image into an existential question. "Building his empire" is a non answer. "Raising a corpse" would have been better. "Empowering the undead working with him through unholy magic" also would have been great. Even "Yeah they're just teasing ethereal foreplay" could have been an amusing answer. #NotNowIveAHeadache. Just dont evade like you fear your next answer explodes the sun. Makes you sound like you know even less than you let on. Work on it.

      Good comment. Frankly, I get the feeling that if "white" races had negative bonuses but redguards didn't, this guy wouldn't be complaining. Seems he's following the woke definition of racism, which is that anything that can come across as insufficiently praiseworthy of blacks. Note that he makes reference to redguards having a -10 racial bonus in intelligence, but not to the fact Nords do too.

      You're misinterpreting what Ted said about race. Orcs are a different species. He was comparing that the differences between variants of humans do not make sense. It's like saying playing as an Asian means you get +5 Martial Arts, that doesn't make sense. But perhaps if your character was born in a province in which everyone in school learns Martial Arts, you get a hand-to-hand bonus regardless of the color you are. That's what Ted was saying.

      @@ImCptnAwesome It makes perfect sense though, and mirrors human groups irl. There's a reason Asians tend to be better at math, on average, than whites. There's a reason certain African groups tend to be the best runners in the world. There's a reason the Bajau people are remarkably adept at free-diving.
      That reason is that, human races, and ethnicities, have evolved to be different. Whatever silly notion of "oh some people may be different but on average we're all the same" that Peterson seems to be operating on is just bullshit. Some groups have, on average, proclivities and talents for things that others don't. This isn't "racist", nor is it racist to mirror this fact in a video game.
      The most important reason it's a ridiculous thing to complain about, is that these racial traits are just there for gameplay, to increase roleplay options.

      @@rodericblack4657 Putting limitations on groups of humans because of their skin color doesn't make sense though. There are Redguard families that lived in Cyrodiil for generations, Imperial families that have lived in Skyrim for generations, etc. In real life every race has the potential to be scientists, olympians, etc. I do think the intention of the devs was to add variety and choice to the game, but they can do this better by allowing you to customize your character's appearance to your liking, then separately choosing their background, like nobility level, knowledge of magic, trade school such as blacksmithing, and so on.

      @@ImCptnAwesome It's more than skin color, it's genetics. Blacks in the US aren't at a higher risk for certain diseases because their skin is black. If everyone would shed this "oh we're all the same under the skin" bs we'd fix a lot of problems going on now. But just like in real life, every race in TES can indeed go on to do just about anything in the game. Nords have -10 intelligence attribute in Oblivion, yet that's not stopping you from making your Nord character into a master mage.
      And look, if you think there are better ways to go about it, that's fine. I'm not saying this is the only way to go about adding roleplay elements to a game. I'm just saying that calling it "racist" is ridiculous.

    At the end of the interview you talk about the problem of not doing the main quest and choosing to go pick mushrooms and side quest stuff which leads to the world feeling static and a sense that everything is waiting for players: Let me just say this.. I hate time limits. :P Please DO NOT put time limits on when a quest needs to be done. Have the time limit be part of "survival mode". Survival or simulator mode is a popular mode added to the ethesda Fallout games where people prefer more realism to surviving out in the wasteland so there are things like dying of thirst for not drinking water, needing to rest so you have energy, and all that stuff which adds realism to the gameplay. What I think would be good is have an option to have time limits be part of that for the main quest. But don't make it the standard mode for the game. Many people prefer to see and do everything before completing the main quest despite it not being realistic. It also adds to a streamers list of options. He can tour the world first and show other people what the game has in it and tease them with the preview of whats in the game without worrying about the world suddenly changing due to being inactive. You want as many youtube streamers out there to show off your world not have the world suddenly end because the players are having fun exploring everything. There is a narrative explanation in that delayed events happen that slow the major events in the world. IE people praying to their gods for mercy and protection so passage of time is slower due to not being able to handle hardships easily.

      I agree. Look at Oblivion. Can you imagine if Kvatch just started running while the game was running and the Daedra just burn down the whole West side of the map? Todd Howard tried to implement timed quests in Fallout 4, but whenever I got a notification that something ended badly because I took too long, I just lost interest. It's hard enough to find time to dive into RPGs and smell all the roses, don't rush me!

    Hearing ted cry about the racism of racial bonuses and how they should just be cultural is hilarious.
    I'm curious if Ted would feel the same way if Redguards had the highest intelligence.
    His point about making the orcs have cultural ressons for disliking magic is asinine. You can do a story where the racial characteristics of groups of people separated by long periods of time, various Gods influencing their creation, etc has a feedback loop on their culture. Which is how this works in real life.
    This bad feeling he has is religiously motivated, not rational. His religion says evolution stopped at the neck, so by golly any fiction he creates will pretend there are no genetic or biological differences between anything at all. The idea that introducing less diversity into the world would make the setting better is just coping. Now our denial of reality in the real world seeps into fiction, and we have to pretend that everyone who is capable of speaking a language is equally intelligent.

    2:37:22 I don't like timers in my games. Fallout 4, which I loathed, notified me that I took too long on a mission. It didn't make me want to do the next mission faster, it just made me lose interest. Same with the XCOM games, the timed missions just annoy me. I want to stop and smell the roses and take my sweet time.
