I am voting for coralie in dga she deserves it. It was a pure vision that was uncompromising. I would swap out berger for her. Conclave well directed but not inspired
@@vajinderkaursamra8075 Honestly, if the directors branch nominate Dune 2, since everyone votes for the director winner then it's possible! It really just needs to get over the snobby directors branch!
Based on comments here and on other channels, Emilia Perez is shaping out to be the "villain" of the season which makes me so happy because I loved the movie. In the past, I haven't enjoyed the villain films (Three Billboards, Green Book, Bohemian Rhapsody) but since I enjoyed Perez, I'm working on my villain laugh!
Don't forget David Lynch was also the sole nomination for Blue Velvet back in '87. I'd say Fargeat's got a chance from what you said. I'm thinking of Pawel Pawlikowski for Cold War and Bennett Miller for Foxcather being nominees even if their respective films were snubbed for Best Picture. I think they might go Audiard's way but I remember being shocked that the Directing Branch snubbed Greta Gerwig for Justine Triet, a move like that makes me think Fargeat may have a stronger shot than we think.
I’m calling it rn 1. Sean Baker - Anora 2. Brady Corbet - The Brutalist 3. Edward Berger - Conclave 4. Denis Villeneuve - Dune Part Two 5. Jacques Audiard - Emilia Perez I would love if Coralie Fargeat, Halina Reijn, or Jon M. Chu got in. I wouldn’t be suprised if Ridley Scott got in because he’s a big name director even though the movie is just fine.
I just want Denis Villeneuve to win Best Director. He deserves it for the masterpiece he made this year. The only real competition is Brady Corbet for The Brutalist. Sean Baker is good and should be nominated but the movie is stronger in Screenplay and Actress.
I'm amazed that when Dune Pt 2 came out, nearly every critic stated it changed cinema and is the best in a decade, but now, most people do not believe it will sweep, let alone get in most categories. "Nolan should thank Denis for not releasing in 2023, cause Dune 2 would sweep." Was a common phrase. And i don't think any film this year is better than Oppenheimer or Dune 2
@@GodwinBaxterAs much as I love both films and consider them the best of this decade so far, I have a feeling that the Brutalist will sweep them a way for me. I just gotta watch it for myself but can’t find a screening nearby :(
I think denis is a lock for one of the spots and has been my prediction to win all year. He has the narrative and he is definitely the star of that film. Dune 2 was also such a cultural moment and was so well made that I think it gets in, especially since dune 1 got into best picture. I think Denis is a lock to win the category. That being said I’m praying for Sean Baker because I think he’s the most deserving and his movie is just so good. Plus the rest of his catalog tells you he is one of the best we got working right now. A director I think will last the test of time. So please give him his flowers and everything he deserves for Anora
There's so much hype around wicked, im surprised. Where did all this hype come from I thought the movie was gonna be like wonka, a nice kids movie with bright colours
Ramell Ross, and what he does in "Nickel Boys," feels like the sort of directorial work that this category is made for. So singular a vision and approach that he doesn't need the narrative or the name recognition to land that fifth slot.
I think that the enthusiasm for Emilia Pérez will cool down and it will not reach the nominations so strongly. I see it nominated for best film and supporting actress and songs, but I don't think it will be nominated in director and actress
I think you’re underrating Villeneuve and Dune Part Two in general. Hope it wins Best Picture and Best Director. For people saying it’s a commercial entertainer, you should study filmmaking first and notice what an artwork Villeneuve made.
Maybe there’s something wrong with me. I normally love big sci fi films. I’m a huge Dune fan. I liked Part 1. But Part 2 felt incredibly average to me.
@ I actually am going to complete my degree this year and I think I can safely it’s the best directed film of the year. The themes of a film and its content may be be subjective to criticism but the craft behind it is always objective and should be studied and understood as intended.
The first thing about NrDy Cobeyg that I noticed was that has a a very round head with a flashy smile like Chairman Mao Such people are not energetic which acounts for. His lesser repertoire of works. But they can be highly competitive once they are up to it and chey can make a name for themselves. There is also a sadistic streak to them.
Very well reasoned. That fifth slot is tricky - I'm currently going with Chu and even though he won't win here, if he does get in, watch out for Wicked as a potential BP winner. They better not snub Villeneuve again...
-Thumbnail: The Substance 🤦🏽♂️ -The Astra Film and Creative Arts Awards nominations have just showed! And the Substance has got 9 nods ❤ Including Movie, Director and Actresses 🎉
I'm wondering if Denis could get snubbed and Berger ends up being the "blockbuster"/big named director that gets in instead - they snubbed him once, they can snub him again. The directors branch has proven they dgaf about big names and big-budget movies as evidenced by Gerwig's snub. Audiard could also miss like they snubbed Baz Luhrmann for Elvis since the reception has been similar. Nickel Boys is more polarizing than Zone of Interest but I think Ramell Ross' POV direction is up the directors' branch's alley so I still have him in as the Glazer of the group.
This would not make any sense. Brutalist is absolutely not the kind of film that would win P without D, and Anora is absolutely not the kind of film that would win D without P.
With dune part 2 coming out in March I need to remind everyone everything everywhere all at once came out in March the year before it won I could see seed of the sacred fog getting a director nom based on the academy standing behind the director This year has 2 strong females so is it all we imagine as light or the substance in director
Personally I’m predicting 1. Brady Corbet 2. Sean Baker 3. Denis Villeneuve 4. Edward Berger 5. RaMell Ross HM Coralie Fargeat Jacques Audiard Robert Eggers
This year 2024 is Saturn"s year 2034 the digits adding up to 8. Saturn is about even the smallest of things can give you comfort and grow into something big. Which is a niekel. Just like our faiti in religion just need to be a size of a mustard seed.
Man Emília Pérez Sucked! Does not deserve the hype or the awards, sure a few songs are good.., Zoe kills on her roll. But everything is so bad, spits absurd putting this director here!
Here's my take. I think everyone is overestimating Edward Berger's chances. I think Conclave will do well, but I feel like he is going to miss. I think the Wicked hype is high. I predict that is going to get more nominations than anyone is expecting, and we are not going to see Berger there. We are going to see John Chu instead. That's not a personal pick by the way. I would rather see Fargeat or Eggers personally, but I think that's what's going to happen.
Nah, Chu's work in Wicked is very pedestrian, almost generic. Barbie had bigger hype and it was MUCH better directed, way more creative (and Greta Gerwig was also nominated for Ladybird, Academy obviously loves her) and it still didn't get the best director nom.

Corbet will probably win this year, academy won’t give Villeneuve or Dune many awards this year he’ll win it for the third dune film
Feeling pretty good about 3 slots and being up in the air on the other 2 seems to be a running theme.
I'm going to riot if the Academy snub Denis AGAIN!
I would LOVE a John M. Chu nod but I think it is wishful thinking at this point. Maybe Part 2 will get him in.

Oh, Brian, you are a national treasure! Thanks for another excellent commentary.
Brady Corbet will win for best director in "The Brutalist".
1. Sean Baker
2. Denis Villeneuve
3. Ridely Scott
Lynch also got a Best Director Oscar nomination for Blue Velvet and as with Mulholland Drive that too was the film's only nomination.
Nickle boys= zone of interest
It will get in for director, sound, picture, cinematography
Denis Villeneuve should absolutely be nominated for Dune part 2. And he should definitely win.
Walter Salles should be a contender. I'm Still Here is a masterpiece.

Anticipating for The Academy to snub a female director and gets tons of backlash for it 😂
Only backlash i remember is audience reaction to snubbed of Greta Gerwig.
If Barbie wasn't hit at box office, audience won't know who Greta Gerwig is.
The only two women who could do it are the substance and all we imagine as light

- Director
- Screenplay
