a huge, extra special welcome to any new subscribers.
    0:50
you know exactly who you are.
    1:12
    what a great community
    1:29
    tips
    any new foreigners new here
    1:33
    survive and thrive in Taiwan
    1:38
let's get straight into it tip #1
    let's get to...
    2:36
    you will pay for it
    2:49
blew up after about 2 months...
    3:24
to escape the city at the weekends
    4:30
    fresh off the boat
不是真的指你剛從船上下來,就好像throw somebody under the bus也不是真的把某人丟到巴士下;cat got your tongue也不是貓真的咬到你的舌頭。
    5:29
    jump into it
    6:17
keep your head on a swivel when walking in the street.
    8:08
    ...but personally, I prefer...
    8:12
...giving my money to a local family-run business rather than a faceless multinational corporation.
    8:22
    ...most 7-11 purchases are...

The new comer survival guide is very useful, particular the traffic problem. As Taiwanese, I always know how worse the traffic is in Taiwan. I like the way you use the word "unique" instead of "bad". You suggestion is very practical! I never had any serious traffic road accident in Taiwan since I am very used to the traffic situation here. And of course, you need to watch out large size vehicles, such as trucks, and buses. However, I had the worst traffic road accident in the UK big city and almost "killed" by double deck bus there. I lived in the UK for couple of years. Culture shocks are everywhere. Leaving the comfort zone is never easy. But It's great to experience a different lifestyle and culture, and learn to appreciate the difference. I like the your register and way of expression. It's neutral, and not hurting anyone's feeling. You are doing a great job! Friendly reminder: you may need to find a good translator to translate your English into Chinese. Some words can really confuse people. And if you need help, you can write to me. (I am a freelance translator).

Taking care of the traffic is the most important to anyone here! That should be the first tip to survive in Taiwan!! And even suitable to all the Taiwanese.
I haven't went to convenient store for buying thing except pick up my package or pay the tax more than 5 years. I totally agree with Allan that we should spend money to local shops, that will be a great help!
And if you want to groove into Taiwan's life quickly, you'd better invite Allan to eat stinky tofu with you. You will be adapted as a Taiwanese with no doubt! LOL

Spent my first year in Taiwan without a scooter and not buying one earlier is one of my major regrets from that time. Facebook has made things so much easier these days and there's now even an English FB group for motorcycles and scooters in Taiwan. People there will help you buy a goodie and answer questions you may have about different brands and makes of bikes.
As regards your comment about people not working too hard - I have had friends who lived here for ten years doing 6 day weeks and it didn't leave them bitter. What I find is making people bitter, is those that try to build a life here long term, but struggle to find work that will provide enough to support a family. A lot of my friends with kids are leaving. These people need to be able to work in the highly competitive and stressful private school scene. The turnover at these schools is unbelievable. Perhaps there's more to the shrinking birth rate than meets the eye...

Tip#2, didn’t really work for my hubby. He spent like 6 months learning, but he just could not do it. But he did learn some from the kids in his school in his 7 years in Taiwan. However part of it, it was my fault. Since he always phone me when he was having trouble. Oh...the funny part is... he still could not pronounce correctly between 水餃🥟 and 睡覺.
About the scooter, if you are living in Taipei, Personally...I think MRT is good enough. You don’t have to buy one. You can rent one instead if you needed to go somewhere outside the city...
    Anyway, great tips..
And.... it’s Stinky Tofu time... woot!!!!

Please take these notes below if you are a foreigner and is going to ride a motorcycle.
    1. It's better not to ride in a rainy day as possible as you can.
    2. If you ride on the line which is painted on the rode and you brake then it's easy to go to slip.
    3. If you see some surface of the rode is shining, don't ride on it . If it's oil then definitely you are going to slip and fall down.
    4. Don't ride on the rode where has many little rocks on it.
    5. Don't ride on the mud , especially in the tunnel where you can't see the rode clearly.
    6. Watching a lot of RUclips video
    With the keyword
    For instance
    ruclips.net/video/1sS63OLiwk8/видео.html
The tumbling guy is so cute ^_^ .

If you are in Taipei, then you don't need to buy a scooter. You can take the subway (MRT) or bus everywhere.

Buying a decent scooter is essential! And maintaining it nicely too is important. So many foreigners here drive some ghetto scooters.

#1 get yourself a scooter as soon as you can
#2 learn Mandarin as much as you can
#3 keep your head on a swivel when walking in the streets
#4 find your local DIY everything store and start using it
#5 do not work too hard

The last tip you made is the gold to today’s subject. Thx, Allan.

Diy everything store and 7-11, I think it requires what you need, if you want to pay bill, you choose 7-11, if you want to buy something cheap or tools, you choose Diy eveything store, these are my standpoint.

Hi Alan! I love watching your videos! I actually look forward to going home on the weekdays after work so I can watch them, lol! For me it’s definitely 7-11, as you mentioned the cleanliness it provides. I’m glad to see you love your life in Taiwan! I was just wondering do you intend to stay in Taiwan for another decade since you like us so much? I’m Taiwanese American and haven’t been to as many places as you have in my home country! I usually just stick with Taipei since it has all the popular malls ☺️ in a way it’s strange that by watching ur videos, it’s helped me learn about various places to go in Taiwan even though I’m Taiwanese but haven’t been there! Also, upon watching I’ve learned some interesting stories behind the festivals like 端午節 you mention in your videos. For some of us native Taiwanese like myself, we just eat the 粽子 and not necessarily get curious to research in depth into the story behind 端午節. I think that we pretty much grew up with the culture, and used to just eating the 粽子 when it’s time for the dragon boat festival every June. So videos like this help a lot in learning more about my root! Thanks for being entertaining and educational in all your videos! Thumbs up! I’m glad I found your videos, and will share with many others about your channel 👍
