Ha, "cultural recon" (spoken at the start). Great term for what James does, i think :) and im damn glad he does it! I love getting to see the art of ny from my distant seat of wales, britain. Cheers for all your efforts, they are massively appreciated by me!
I like when she works up the detail in the face more...it is well executed. I respect that. I'm not sure if I like the quick, loose treatment to the rest of the painting. There are things about this show I like but it also seems to have a lot of "filler"...like when you buy an album and their are only two or three songs you like. Just my opinion. As always, thanks James!
Peyton's new work feels more like 'relational aesthetics' than institutional critique: especially with the cameo appearance by Liam Gillick;-) Keep up the good work, nice wandering around New York even though five thousand miles away.
The diaphanous quality of her line is something really special. Also, the pedigree of art history seems to swim through the paintings...I find my mind wandering through so many periods and painters.
A monotype is a technique of printmaking where the image is painted on a plate, a sheet of paper is laid over it, and the plate is run through a press like an etching or lithograph. The resulting "print" is a single image ie. monotype and is unique. I've also seen artists who do this technique on a larger scale, print the image on canvas, and stretch it like a painting...
jameskalm : thank you James for the details 😊👍 you’re channel is one of my favorites. I have another question if you don’t mind, what kind of paints are most common for monotype processes?
@@khm2917 Because the monotype technique is associated with etching and lithograph, artists traditionally use oil based inks, but many folks use thinned oil paint, and I've even heard of people using water color...
While foxtrapper1972 may be right, perhaps there is a sexism element to his comment. There was much to like in the show. If I had to pick one, it might be the girl with the dog with blue face.
never a big fan of Peyton, I'm blown away at how much better her work has gotten since I last saw them. She's developed more sophisticated paint handling while retaining that inner-soul-searching face from her earlier work.
nah, hes not sexist. he hates everything that isnt his. ive been watching james' videos for three years and foxtrapper cant seem to say a single good word for even one artist. hes carmudgeonly at all times.
Question? WHat makes her special? She's a mediocre painter at best. There are thousands of artists wayyyyyyyyy better than her. So why is she successful?
Whoa, these are dreadful. So weak. Is that the point somehow? JK said something about high kitsch. Anyway, they look like a high school student's idea of cool art to me. She's clearly tracing a photo projection and doing a minimum of painting.

Yeah Gavin, "cultural recon" that's what we do here. I'll try to give a shout out to all our viewers in Wales on the next report...
Thank you James, great job covering a great show.
"Elias Bender Ronnenfelt" is the singer of Danish punk band Iceage! They're one of my favorites and I recognize his silhouette in that picture.
Pretty Pictures.
Thx again, James. Always enjoyable to see your videos.

and those portraits of him are fabulous
Thank you Kate
Does all of the empty wall real estate make the paintings more valuable?
Thank you! I love your videos.

Awesome work
Love this.
Any idea how she makes her ground? They are so nice and smooth. Like you say the ground is really important for this kind of work.
that cowbell really fills the space...
Interesting that Alex Katz was present, because IMO Elizabeth Peyton's work is reminiscent of pop-art portraiture of Katz.

I love Elizabeth! I have a question, what is monotype paint ?

I like the paint application. Very heavy.
It's a Sony RX 100, my favorite toy.
hi james. what did you mean by "critiquing the institutions" on the michelle/obama piece
Hey ThePIPdesign, just google institutional critique. (Hint: it's a European version of Conceptual Art.)

How is the picture of Obama and his wife a critique as you say?
.......if you don't have anything good to say about the pedestrian ...something ...something .....i forget . Thanks .
Perhaps it would be best to attend art openings while leaving one's dogs and cowbells at home. Both are distractions.
The bunching of people into little humming egg clusters...

Please try to keep the discourses here civil, otherwise I'll have to block you,.. sorry. JK

Elizabeth fulfilled a need that an important part of the "art consuming" community had at a particular time.
See one...Seen them all.. Yawwwnnn
