how do you know where to stop the first row and k2tog and turn?? what are your calculations?

It's based on the number of stitches you have on each shoulder. Let's use 40 stitches as an example.
You have 40 stitches cast on and knitted, let's say you want your shoulders to be equal to your neck hole, you will need 20 stitches for the shoulders and 20 stitches for the neck hole. Therefore you stop after the 10th stitch because that is where the first shoulder will end.
