  • Stuart VE9CF's Recent Activations from Pointe-au-Père
In July 2024, Stuart VE9CF embarked on a remarkable journey to activate several sites for Parks on the Air (POTA), World Wide Flora & Fauna (WWFF), and Lighthouses on the Air (LOTA) from two iconic locations along the St. Lawrence River: the Pointe-au-Père Lighthouse National Historic Site and the Pointe-au-Père National Wildlife Area. His efforts resulted in over 200 QSOs (contacts) with amateur radio enthusiasts around the globe, showcasing the rich history and natural beauty of these locations.
    Pointe-au-Père Lighthouse National Historic Site
The Pointe-au-Père Lighthouse, located near Rimouski, Quebec, is one of the tallest lighthouses in Canada, standing at 33 meters (108 feet). This historic site has been vital for navigation along the St. Lawrence River since its first lighthouse was established in 1859. Over the years, four different lighthouses have been built at this location, with the current octagonal white tower, supported by flying buttresses, being operational from 1909 to 1997 (source).
The lighthouse is now a national historic site managed by Parks Canada. Visitors can climb its 128 steps for a panoramic view of the river. The site also features exhibits on the maritime history of the area and the role the lighthouse played in ensuring safe navigation (source).
    Pointe-au-Père National Wildlife Area
Adjacent to the lighthouse, the Pointe-au-Père National Wildlife Area is a protected region that provides a habitat for a variety of bird species and other wildlife. This area is part of the World Wide Flora & Fauna program, which aims to promote the conservation of nature through amateur radio activities. Stuart's activation here highlighted the area's natural beauty and contributed to raising awareness about the importance of preserving such vital ecosystems.
    The Onondaga Submarine
Adding to the historical significance of Pointe-au-Père is the HMCS Onondaga, a decommissioned Oberon-class submarine now a museum exhibit. The Onondaga served in the Royal Canadian Navy from 1967 until its decommissioning in 2000. It was brought to Pointe-au-Père in 2008 and has since been a popular attraction, offering visitors a unique glimpse into life aboard a submarine. The exhibit provides an immersive experience, allowing people to explore the cramped quarters and learn about the submarine's role during the Cold War (source).
    Stuart VE9CF's Activation
Stuart's activations from these sites were part of the Parks on the Air, World Wide Flora & Fauna, and Lighthouses on the Air programs. These initiatives encourage amateur radio operators to set up portable stations in national parks, wildlife areas, and near lighthouses to make contact with other operators worldwide. During his activation, Stuart managed to log over 200 QSOs, connecting with radio enthusiasts from various countries and promoting the historical and environmental significance of Pointe-au-Père.
His efforts showcased his skills as an amateur radio operator and brought attention to the rich maritime heritage and natural beauty of the Pointe-au-Père area. The combination of historical landmarks, such as the lighthouse and the Onondaga submarine, with the natural splendor of the wildlife area made this activation a memorable event for Stuart and the amateur radio community.
In conclusion, Stuart VE9CF's recent activations from Pointe-au-Père were a resounding success, blending history, nature, and the spirit of amateur radio. His achievement of over 200 QSOs is a testament to these programs' enduring appeal and the unique locations they highlight.
