When I was a kid I finished Banjo Kazooie without ever entering the room that Clanker is in. Treasure Trove Cove taught us that sharks are scary and not to be messed with, and then as soon as you go through that under water tunnel there's a MASSIVE METAL SHARK? I was terrified. I went through the rest of the game without the wonder wing ability. I had gotten those notes in the starting area, and nothing else pretty much. Was able to get to grunty and beat her, but never cleared Clanker's until way later.
So you CAN skip it! I had a feeling but was not sure, the feeling of the level is definitely a bit darker and scarier. Banjo has given me Sharkphobia just from that damn treasure trove cove shark
