just because you were born into the binary you identify as does not mean that applies to everyone else. Schuyler is an amazing athlete and has accomplished more than i - and perhaps you - physically. HE deserves respect for that. if that is beyond your ability, then do like your mama said - if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything!
Can't wait for the Olympics, this is going to alienate Natural born female athletes who's life work has gone out the window to some sick in the head Males with Gender Dysphoria.
“My family has never shown me a lack of love, and that has been what has kept me alive.” Wow. What a powerful statement. A parent’s love and acceptance is so, so important! What an inspirational family
Male to female athletes is a whole separate issue, but female to male don't have an advantage over biological males, and what everyone who is saying he [Schuyler] is doping needs to realise is that the HRT is only putting his levels of testosterone up to par to that of the average man. Doping is taken very seriously in the Olympics, and were he to go to the Olympics, he would be more highly regulated and subjected to the same doping tests as other athletes. He doesn't have an advantage if he is swimming against males.
janice bonomo Well, clearly that's not what it's about for him. People shouldn't have to compromise the one of the two parts of who they are for the other. Like I said, he has no advantage(s), ftms have no advantage(s), so what's the problem? ¯\_😕_/¯
I''m not pro transgender but you're right. Growing up as a Female will permanently change your strength. No matter how much testostrone you take. He/She will have an advantage for Female swimming and a disadvantage for Male swimming.
I have no kind of connection to transgenderness, college life or swimming. But I know a whole lot about the value of having supporting parents, and being free to be oneself in a world where there are lots of close-minded people. Great story, keep it up Schuyler! And hug your parents from me.
Such is the thoughts of most people. "As long as it doesn't effect me, I don't care." Well, my general philosophy is, as long as you're not hurting anyone, do whatever you want. But here we do have a case of injustice. Just take a second to look up all the male athletes who are competing in female sports and winning. This isn't just happening in the olympics, but also high schools.... And when I say winning, I mean beating former 1st place competitors by a large margin.
in all sports competitors/athletes have their hormone levels tested. transgender men and women have their testosterone/oestrogen monitored to ensure that they have no hormonal advantage over cisgender athletes. the issue of cis athletes doping to gain an unfair advantage is a far bigger issue. your point is defunct, just admit you hate trans people and go cry about it.
No it's not. Schuyler is a boy's name and always has been it's simply that parents have decided to start using it for their daughters. The male Shannons, Ashleys, Lynns, Tracys and Vivians can pity the male Schuyler that is slowly also transitioning its gender from male to female. There's a girl in my kid's class name Ryan and another named Elliott (thank you very much The Office) and how many Morgans do you know? Morgan Freeman would probably like to think of his name as being a masculine name but for some reason some parent thought it was a feminine name. Girls are getting boy names because parents feel it gives them a leg up to have a male name in the corporate world. I guess they're right, you don't see any boys getting girl names and once the transition occurs, it never goes back because boys can't be like girls because girls are beneath them.
I wasn't going to comment but after seeing the negativity in here I wanted to throw some positivity out to him. I am so proud of him, he's doing what he loves and really excelling in it as well as being who he is even when others will try to tear him down for that. That's incredible!! He's out there winning awards with his swimming and helping people to understand what it means to be trans and giving his life so much wonderful meaning, probably more than the bigoted people in these comments are doing!
I have a trans friend (FTM). But the first time I ever met her, I honestly didn't even know she was trans. She was stunningly gorgeous in a feminine way without any surgeries or anything. She was wearing a long wig, me, being dumb, asked her how long it took her to grow her hair out and she laughed hard and told me that "Its a wig Hun. I'm trans." I was OPENLY shocked. I think sometimes, when a person knows for so long that their a specific gender, maybe it affects the way their body manifests itself. Even before treatment. Many Blessings to All LGBTQ+ 🏳️🌈 people out there. Everyone deserves respect as long as their being respected. ❤️
Matt Chow it has everything to do with the Olympics. athletes don't just show up to the olympics. they train for years on teams. they become Olympians and Olympians have to start somewhere. these are future Olympians son!!
A sorry family? They would be even sorrier if their child committed suicide. Suicide is a big risk for transgenders, but with love and support from their families, they do just as well as the rest of us. Sure, gender dysphoria might be a psych issue, but Schuyler is handling that problem as best he can. If you don't have that problem, then just be glad that you don't, and be pleasant to those who must cope with it.
His parents are delusional enablers. It's like a druggie's parents accepting him for "who he is" rather than getting him help. It's actually quite fascinating to observe how people such as yourself are so easily & completely indoctrinated to be blind to logical facts that are obvious to a child.
You say facts like people didn't believe that a flat earth was factual, until it was disproved. Facts can change with the coming of new information, so it's better to try learning new things and broadening your mind than being a close-minded keyboard warrior.
You'd think someone that "doesn't like" or "accept" the transgender community wouldn't take the time to click on a video about said subject...and yet here y'all are in the comments
I just don't see the point in seeking out something you apparently hate but good on you, Cynder. I came to the comments to root for Schuyler I hope you did too.
Irving Chies I wanna be a lion. Call me a lion from now on or your discriminating against me. I feel like one and want to be one so I should be called a lion. roar!
Irving Chies That's really good advice thak you. Especially for chosing studies. It can be scary, but I think it's better to chose what you are passionate about rather than what seems to be more socially rewarding, because studying hard without the motivation is almost impossible in the long run and your life become miserable... It's like you live your life for your parents/relatives, and you lose yourself.
To be honest, not only is he super attractive, but he seems so friendly. I wish we had more people like that. You can definitely tell that he has a kind heart, and so do his parents. Love that family.
Not only is this a very moving story, it gives me plenty of hope. I'm transgender as well as a swimmer, and I want to be an Olympic athlete. Everything seemed complicated and I started swimming as a hobby, and I essentially gave up my dream to become a swimmer at competitive levels. He and I have such similar stories, and now he's given me the hope that I'll be a swimmer too.
It's wonderful that things have worked out for you Schuyler - so happy for you. I love seeing your Mum knitting away in the audience - I have a tendency to do that to. Good luck with everything you do.
So, I've been swimming since I was 5, and any time I've questioned my gender I had to push it under the carpet because I have to swim. So maybe I can learn to accept myself even while swimming. I didn't realize there were others like me.
Embrace who you really are. As far as any of us know this is the only life you get and you shouldn't waste any of it living a lie just to make others comfortable. Be happy and live life to the fullest ☺
oh man where'd the onions come from ;_; so happy for him, it was really awesome to see that even his Harvard coach was inspired by his motivations and personal growth that I feel like that, too, really helped him push further to achieve what he really wanted.
I watched this video and I felt so moved by this story, it's really inspiring to see someone achieve their dreams and at the same time be accepted for who they are. However, after I went to the comments section and I was disgusted by the awful comments. I was mostly upset by the comments that said something like this..."I don't have a problem with trans people, on the other hand...." All of you need to stop, you are all so privileged you don't even realize it. First off transgender athletes aren't taking crazy steroids to help them win or cheat, they're taking hormones to be happy in their skin and feel normal for once in their life. Not only are you all so lucky to feel the way you were born but you actually have people to look up to, I'm a trans person just like Schuyler and this is really one of the first times I've ever felt inspired by someone who's like me. I honestly haven't started my transition yet because I basically can't turn to my parents, because of this the only way I can describe how I feel about my body is I constantly want to crawl out of my skin, many trans people feel the same way all the time. I'm so uncomfortable I have this feeling a lot weather I'm look at my body, hearing the sound of my voice, or someone calling me the wrong pronoun. It is so frustrating and many cis people don't understand how hard trans people have it and get so angry when they're finally happy. If anyone doesn't have anything nice to say about Schuyler or any transgender person for just being happy then don't say anything at all, you all probably wouldn't even say this in real life anyways since you're just hiding behind a computer screen ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. Respect trans people, we matter and we're here get used to it.
sun spire #respect god had you on this earth for a reason, a reason to inspire I believe. I've shone this to people who have always hated trans people and now they support thanks to you! So I really thanks you for writing this you are making the world a better place!
TheUsefulUnicorn wow I don't even know what to say I was just writing what I felt, I never thought it would have that much power. Thank you for telling me that it means a lot to me :-)
sun spire Thank you so much for spelling out my feelings on this screen in the comments. As a person deciding to undergo their transition from female to make, it gives me a warm feel I g that not all people out there are against trans people. It makes it so much easier to realize that other people support you and want you to be happy as well. you have my respect 😊
Heichou Kirigakure This makes me so happy knowing that I helped someone. It's a little hard for me to advocate opening because I haven't come out yet, but when I see something like this I just have to. I'm glad this helped you and I know it can be hard but don't let negativity stop you from being who you are!! :-) I really appreciate the response thank you! P.s. Good luck on your transition you have my support!!
Jake Ponsiglione Really creative comment but it honestly did nothing to me. I know who I am and what you or anyone else has to say about it doesn't effect me, but by what you said definitely shows who you are and I really hope you're proud of that.
This video is really awesome I am FTM as well and I am a swimmer and people tell me I could go far with it but I wasn't sure I could but now I know I can so thank you thank you
The part where he said he was scared made me tear up. I cant imagine going on as a female while swimming. I’ve just told one of my friends and they were super supportive but I’m scared of loosing everything I had gain so far. I live in a country where people might not want me to be different. I’m really scared. I’m 15 and it’s been going on like this for 2years. I loved the water since I was very young, I went to swimming classes, after that I went to a swimming club and I met awesome people. I love swimming but I’m scared.
I'm so close to crying oh my gosh,, I didn't know this kind of amazing representation existed.. I'm a Mexican American trans boy and I can understand how scary it can be but I'm so glad to see someone, trans, and prospering in what they love to do
This video was the best 13:37 mins of my life!! I was a swimmer too and I never heard something like this! OMG you rock boy 👏🏽 Congrats ❤️ Proud of you 🙏🏽
I have my own opinions on Transgenders competing in sports but that is my opinion. I have no moral right to tell him what he can and can't do as long as he meets the requirements. I may not agree with him and his decisions but I respect them. I hope the best for his future as a swimmer.
Thanks for being kind about it. I wish more people would chill out more with their opinions. There's nothing wrong with opinions, but a lot of people are being rude about it.
because his testosterone level is within the same range as the other athletes. he takes a specific dosage once or twice a month. trans athletes don't get to just inject themselves with testosterone whenever they want at any dosage they want it is strictly regulated
Save Teddy 6969 youre extremely educated. have you even tried to google that question or just decided that was just a fact? you sound like you have the misconcept that transman have a higher testosterone level than a cisman- thats not true. think of it as a man whos hormones are imbalanced (which does happen btw!!) and needs to take testosterone to get back to the normal range- will you say he shouldnt play because he gets to "drug" himself while others cannot? it is not an advantage- it is to reach to the normal range of a man. educate before making a prejudiced comment.
Save Teddy 6969 wow ignorant or what did you not read the very first post ioc has rules for these things, I suggest u read them and keep your ignorant comments to yourself
I love his story, his parents's support, his grandmother's acceptance, his teammates and coaches' inclusion, and his honesty and bravery. So much we can all learn from--namely the right to find your happiness and the ability to be your true self. Bravo Schuyler and everyone involved.
Jacob Hawkins it is unfair that you're disrespecting people's identity and the decision that has been made to add a new Olympic rule for the fairness of equalisation!
Rabbi Avner Echoberg-Shekelstein therapy????? That hasn't worked EVER!! since the beginning of the 19 th century!! When they started therapy. Unless you've walked an inch in their shoes then don't even try to diagnose, help or even comment. These people have felt this way for as long as they can remember ANYTHING. Most as early as 4 years of age.
This is an amazing story of courage and walking one's own path in life. Thankfully, Schuyler seems to have received much love and support from those in his life along the way.
M Mac you need to go to school, and meanwhile google intersex and start educating yourself on the subject before commenting, otherwise you are symply a pathetic troll. There are multiple kinds of diversity in human body than you thought. There are tons of baby boys being born with physical appearance of a girl and vice versa. For transgenders, the internal wiring in their brain and body is different from the outside appearance. It is each person who knows best who they are. Unless you're a medical researcher or their parents, go away and mind your own business.
This is such a difficult topic. Of course transgender people should be allowed to compete at the Olympics if they qualify for it just like everyone else. It wouldn't be fair to exclude them. Finding a way to include them without making the games unfair to the other athletes isn't easy though. A seperate category could be a solution, but I doubt there are enough transgender athletes competing at the various Olympic events. If there were as many transgender athletes as male and female athletes, it would be easy. Four categories: Male, Female, Trans (Male to Female), Trans (Female to Male). Since this most likely isn't an option that would work out in reality though, I think the IOC is going in the right direction with their new rules - looking at scientific facts and data (e.g. testosterone level limits) - although I do find it a bit odd that they don't even have to transition. What I really hate about that discussion are the people who instantly call you 'transphobic' if you voice even the smallest, most justified, polite and constructive criticism.
Your comment is the most sincere and kind than all the others saying that it is "unfair" for transgender people to compete against their counterparts. You are being polite and curious unlike all of the other rude people in these comments. I understand where you are coming from but I feel that if they were to have different groups for different people that others would criticize that the transgender people are being segregated against by separating them from cisgender people which makes logical sense. Either way for now the system they have will do.
It is a difficult topic, I agree. However, creating a separate category for trans people isn't the answer. It would validate the fact that trans people aren't real men or women. If one identifies as trans then they're gender isn't trans its male, female or non binary. I think we should allow everyone to compete in their respective categories. Of course it would cause uproar but, its the right thing to do. The argument that some trans people would have "advantages" in the olympics kind of falls flat, for me at least. You have to go through a very long process to get your gender marker and name changed let alone the hormones. It takes 2-3 years until your body is at the required level to compete. It isn't as easy as waking up and just competing for the mens/female category. Lastly, if one would separate athletes based on performances or skill then it would not make sense to have an olympics in the first place. The whole point is to compete. This begs the question should we not allow Kenyans to compete in long distance events based on the fact that their genes give them an advantage?
No no no. Their levels of hormones are tested to make sure that similar athletes in his shape and age have the same levels or within the same levels. If his testosterone levels are 10 times higher than other athletes then he's disqualified. It's very tricky but the right doctors that know how the monitor these issues have a really tough job. When men transition to female at some point their levels of estrogen keep them as " weak" or as strong as a genetically born woman. Trust me I've done tons of research on this issue.
This video means so much, Schuyler has inspired me and given me the confidence to be myself and start my own channel about being a trans athlete! I can never thank him and others like him enough for paving the path for me.
The hate and disrespect from some of the commenters is, at times, sickening. What's the point of it? That hatred and bitterness. I guess for you it's easy to hate; you don't have to step out of your comfort zone, you don't have to learn anything, or deal with nuance, or put yourself in anyone else's position. You don't have to challenge your friends, family, or people at the church. You just go along with everyone else, and make assumptions that feel safe and intuitive. Empathizing is harder than hating. I guess I can't blame you.
As someone whos watched someone l love very much deal for many many years with not being able to "come out " to family, friends, employees & coworkers etc as her authentic self, lm extremely proud of this young man for being brave when it wasn't easy and strong not only for himself but members of the trans community at large !!! 🦋🦋🦋 The person l mentioned was born a male & will be 69 this month. She's known she identified as female since she was very small... she just didn't know there was a name for her feelings. She spent years being a husband, father, police officer and trucker because those were the roles expected of a genetic male. Even now as an engineer of 33 years, she cannot come out at work for fear of being fired. Though firing somehome for being trans is illegal, in a right to work state, her boss wouldn't need a reason. All of that being said, Mr. Bailar is helping to set the new acceptable standards of honoring not only family and school but most importantly himself. Stories like his, are paving the road to trans issue awareness, rights and freedoms with bricks of authenticity !!!! Just keep swimming ! ~ Dori
For the comments complaining that there's even an inkling of a possibility HRT and doping are the same, let me hit you with some knowledge. Steroids and HRT are two different types of hormones. Steroid-based testosterone is something called anabolic, Synthetic testosterone (the kind trans-men take) is androgenic.
Dont worry. Im a ftm figure skater and I havent made it YET, but when I get my gold for the USA, Im gonna make all trans athletes proud, and so will you. Youre gonna make it so far in the world.
What an interesting way of spelling of his name. In Dutch, one could translate it as 'hider' as in; someone who hides themselves away. But the archaic spelling can also be interpreted as "Shelter". A place of protection. Schuyler found shelter by being himself. How wonderful!
this was really inspirational...i'm getting closer and closer to coming out as trans and seeing that he can be happy and successful is really motivational... lots of love
super inspiring, gives me a lot of strength that I face in daily life on so many level. I never give up to find out the thing that I can't live without it. Thank you for sharing your story!
I love this as I am a Trans Male in my first year of High school and I just started on the Boys Varsity swim team in the beginning of November. I believe I am the first trans male to do swim at my school and that makes me feel better that we are finally taking a step forward. I change in the boys locker room and I've made friends on the team, and as hard as it can be, I love being in the water like he does. I finally have someone to look up to.
DaniMarcusFTM you were not born a man therefore you are a women. The only explanation for this disgusting mind set is that you are a product of your environment
The fact that he has found himself and is doing what he loves and that the people are supporting him in what he is and what he is doing that is amazing and inspirational for the people out there are that transgender
+lookingfordanny +Lucas Devlin Let's check the DSM, shall we? "gender nonconformity is not in itself a mental disorder. The critical element of gender dysphoria is the presence of clinically significant distress associated with the condition."
Sam WInchester Lol the DSM publishing committee is highly politicized and that change was only made in the most recent version of the DSM after pressure from trans groups- they made the change based on literally no new science, research, or information at all. Beyond that, if you actually think men who think they're women and want to chop their weiners off because of it are sane in any way, you're admitting to being a complete idiot.
His story is amazing! As a DC-area native, I'm so proud a local young man is doing so much and blazing such a trail for others. As a woman in a wheelchair who stoutly *refuses* to be relegated to "disability-specific" or "wheelchair" events, I can totally see why it's SO important to break moulds and shatter stereotypes set by organisations, groups, and society as a whole. He's doing great things and his parents should be *incredibly* proud!
I find it inspiring that Schuyler's teammates accepted him for who he is and how the people around him, including his parents support and love him as a brave human being.
As a transgender swimmer it’s super hard grappling with dysphoria on the day to day but it’s 10x worse at the end of the day when I’m in my suit (women’s I’m pre T and Top) and still being seen as a woman but I could never give up a sport because of my dysphoria I’ve been doing this since I was 4 and it’s a huge part of my life.
I'm trans and I came out 1 year ago to my Mum, Dad, and sister, but I feel like I'm at a stand still at the moment. As soon as I came out it was a moment where I had finalized the decision to give up soccer, in light of the fact that when I start to physically transition I would no longer be able to compete. Like Schuyler and his swimming, soccer is all I know and love, the thought of not being able to compete in the sport is heart breaking. I'm currently studying at a Catholic school with many transphobic/homophobic students, and I wouldn't be able to receive the support I would need if I was to come out to everyone. So I haven't spoken on the situation to any of my family since, as I'm quite sure they're either uncomfortable or waiting for me to speak on it. My dysphoria is crippling to the point where I wouldn't go out and my depression has sky rocketed. It really doesn't help that I've given up on my only interest (soccer). Hopefully, one day I will be able to gain the courage just like Schuyler.
You want to be a man, that doesn't make you one. I want to be a rhino. But even if I get a horn placed on my face and walk on all fours every day doesn't mean the government wont tax my paychecks.
That's what I call a pretty amazing family. They also show what unconditional love looks like. Wether we understand or agree, at the end of the day all I, or most parents, want is for our children to be happy and whole and be able to live their dreams
You know what's sad? That I'm not even surprised at all the transphobes in the comments. I'm not even appalled at all the disrespect. Schuyler and his story are inspiring and touching. He is amazing and has a lot of respect from me.
sam james Why can't you just show respect? It's 2017 and people are free to be who they want to be and if you don't like it move to the woods and be alone if you want handle people wanting to be happy
StOp SleEpInG On mOnStA X Sam is right and you are a dipshit. So, there is a male weight lifter and he competes as a woman. Of course he wins. Is that right? It is down right stupid to have transgenders "picking" whose rights they infringe upon. Men can now use the womens rest room. Pretty stupid.
This is a really emotional story for me because transgender is a really big deal where I live, and there are people on my swim team and show choir team who are transgender so hearing this story is really cool and emotional all at the same time.
yan guy Common sense is to treat others how u would like to be treated. But nope shitbags like you wanna feel superior and then come crying when others return the favour.
Add Meliora There are people born with both male and female body parts. And some even have both XX and XY chromosomes at the same time. It's called being hermaphrodite or "intersex" google it before you shout out nonsense like that.
This comment section is disrespectful people calling him an it or correcting people when they write he. Why can't people accept people for who they are
compacto bokia but if a person were transitioning from male to female she would most likely be taking the female hormones estrogen and progesterone that would change her body to have similar female attributes as her cisfemale counterparts.
Going though the comments is so depressing. There’s a lot of support but an equal amount of hate. And for a solid portion of you, your reasoning for hating trans is religion. Just accept that the world is moving away from the close mindedness and people can come out of their shells and be truly happy. Time to evolve, people.
Leonore Rochlitz men and women have their strengths and weaknesses. While men have a powerful upper body women have a strong lower body. Although men can develop muscle faster than women, women are much more flexible which can prevent injury. Women are also biologically evolved to withstand more pain than men. The concept of boys vs girls is an old one but not completely necessary. Why look at gender when we can look at skill?
some of these comments make me sick. honestly? first it was race, then sexuality, now religion and transgender. when will we learn from the past and just except and love everyone as human? I don't get it.
It's not a delusion. There are more gender types than male and female. Some men are born with female bodyparts. Some people are born with both male and female body parts. And some female are born with male body parts. It's called 'intersex' and has been a common thing in nature since nature existed. That's why education is so important.
you and others think it's delusion because it deviates from what you consider normal when in reality life is so much more complicated. And it's their lives? Not being straight, not being cis, not being a certain religion does not harm others. At most it makes them uncomfortable, and that is the most egotistical thing to try and deny other people's truths because it simply makes YOU "uncomfortable." Aren't you even a little embarrassed to care so much what other people do with their lives?
Acceptance? I've always wondered the same thing about trans individuals. Why can't they just accept themselves the way they were born? You were born a male. You were born a female. Accept that. Just because you feel like the other sometimes, doesn't mean you were put in the wrong body. Accept that.
missylks123 why don't amputees just accept that they have no limbs and crawl on the ground? why don't cancer patients just accept they have cancer and die? why can't you accept that you are an ignorant bigot and you're the problem? not others?
Keep on keeping on Schuyler...now you've become a role model for other's to follow, and still other's to look up to..A road is never easy to build. The true test of ourselves is when we extend out our hand and say, I will lift you up and steady you so that you may build your own road from where i left off. Some say being a Role Model is hard to do, but you see it's really not, because it come's from the Heart...our most valuable gift that you and i have and that you and i share with the World around us...Keep on keeping on...
The grandma's reaction to the tattoo😂 "thank you for taking this eternal vow to take care of your parents" like, chill grandma it's not that serious! 😂😂😂😂
I kind of love this story. I love his family too, his parents are wonderful. The diversity enriches it for me. Being from a biracial Asian/Hispanic family myself and being gender nonconforming, I really love that I'm seeing a family that reminds me of my own, except both parents are functional emotionally healthy beings unlike my own lol. But I love them the same, because they do love me and always have.
Guys, he literally spoke at my school TODAY. It was an incredible speech, if you are reading this thank you for speaking and answering all of our questions.
kildozer _56_2 he doesn't have a mental illness. I know it's hard for some people to accept others who are different and don't fit the standard mold that society has created.
kildozer _56_2 fine, I'll talk on your ground about Schuyler having a "mental illness". It's not someone's choice to have a mental illness, just like a physical illness. Saying you don't condone mental illness is a weak argument. For example, would you go up to someone who has depression and be like "I don't support you or your rights because you have a mental illness". No, you would probably want them to feel happier/better. And guess what? Schuyler is happy. He has beaten his "mental illness" and is finally comfortable with who he is. Be happy that he is happy.

he should just competed against female coz he has greater success. But whatever makes him happy i am 100 percent support!
janice bonomo Well, clearly that's not what it's about for him. People shouldn't have to compromise the one of the two parts of who they are for the other. Like I said, he has no advantage(s), ftms have no advantage(s), so what's the problem? ¯\_😕_/¯
Not to mention that athletes that dope take a different kind of testosterone that only effects their muscles
I''m not pro transgender but you're right. Growing up as a Female will permanently change your strength. No matter how much testostrone you take. He/She will have an advantage for Female swimming and a disadvantage for Male swimming.
She*
I have no kind of connection to transgenderness, college life or swimming. But I know a whole lot about the value of having supporting parents, and being free to be oneself in a world where there are lots of close-minded people. Great story, keep it up Schuyler! And hug your parents from me.
Well said, Andreas 👏
his mum caually knitting in the audience omg thats so cute
Mark Thaed no, i said he because he's a he. you shouldn't try and correct people when they're not wrong; it makes you look stupid :)
Mark Thaed If you would like people to respect you for being a rhino, since it hurts me in no way, I would gladly comply
Such is the thoughts of most people. "As long as it doesn't effect me, I don't care."
Well, my general philosophy is, as long as you're not hurting anyone, do whatever you want. But here we do have a case of injustice. Just take a second to look up all the male athletes who are competing in female sports and winning. This isn't just happening in the olympics, but also high schools....
And when I say winning, I mean beating former 1st place competitors by a large margin.
in all sports competitors/athletes have their hormone levels tested. transgender men and women have their testosterone/oestrogen monitored to ensure that they have no hormonal advantage over cisgender athletes. the issue of cis athletes doping to gain an unfair advantage is a far bigger issue.
your point is defunct, just admit you hate trans people and go cry about it.
lmaaoooo, transphobes never fail to find new ways to embarrass themselves
His parents are so supportive!

Gili Tesciuba what you mean "he"
Just kidding
i like how unisex his name is
No it's not.
Vicky B, Misha is a girls name but Misha Collins is a man...
Vicky B Schuyler sounds like Skylar
his name reminds me of the schuyler sisters from the hamilton musical
Yes it is!
His parents seem so amazing and supportive. He's a handsome young man. Well done Skylar! You keep at it mate! :D
Video Games Epic ,
Video Games Epic SHE!
*Schuyler :) His name is written a bit differently
Video Games Epic Woman she still has 2 x chromosomes therefore it is a she

I love how he kept his name the same, and still embraces it.
Why do I have a feeling Olympic channel did this as a response to the Transgender volleyball player video that got lots of hate?
*Lots* not lost.
They didn't, because they announced this series and the volleyball one was the first one they released.
This story has nothing to do with the olympics.
Matt Chow it has everything to do with the Olympics. athletes don't just show up to the olympics. they train for years on teams. they become Olympians and Olympians have to start somewhere. these are future Olympians son!!
Alchamei Same with the Women's 800m final in 2016 at Rio. The top 3 finishers were all guys
His parents are superstars, as is he. Kudos to all.
I'm also impressed by his grandma.
As well as the coaches. I am in their rival scool.. but hats off to Havard. What they did was so inspiring.
Murphy Massey Well if you don't like looking at other people's unaccepting comments on here then why look through the comments to read them?
Murphy Massey I haven't seen a single hate comment
The One Eyed Professor Yeah, exactly
I just don't see the point in seeking out something you apparently hate but good on you, Cynder. I came to the comments to root for Schuyler I hope you did too.
Murphy Massey It wasn't seeked out, it came to me on my feed. So of course I'm going to see what it is and gave an opinion on it :/
Such an inspiring Story!
Tom Daley hello! 😊
do things because you want to do them, not because you want acceptance
Irving Chies I wanna be a lion. Call me a lion from now on or your discriminating against me. I feel like one and want to be one so I should be called a lion. roar!
Prince Bosstop then your a lion if you feel like one then that's amazing
Ace Central 🦁😂😂
people should kill ppl coz they get mad
Irving Chies That's really good advice thak you. Especially for chosing studies. It can be scary, but I think it's better to chose what you are passionate about rather than what seems to be more socially rewarding, because studying hard without the motivation is almost impossible in the long run and your life become miserable... It's like you live your life for your parents/relatives, and you lose yourself.
Wonderful documentary. What an inspiring person. Best of luck Schuyler!
It's sad that some people think becoming your true self is being mentally ill. You should consider educating yourself about mental illnesses first.
To be honest, not only is he super attractive,
but he seems so friendly.
Thanks for sharing your story! Good luck with your swimming! 🏊
you have to sacrifice
It's wonderful that things have worked out for you Schuyler - so happy for you. I love seeing your Mum knitting away in the audience - I have a tendency to do that to. Good luck with everything you do.
the tattoo made me tear up huhuhu ❤️
Yeah that part was really touching
Fantastic values in this family.
So, I've been swimming since I was 5, and any time I've questioned my gender I had to push it under the carpet because I have to swim. So maybe I can learn to accept myself even while swimming. I didn't realize there were others like me.
There will always be others like us outside, always.
quit swimming,its easier
Embrace who you really are. As far as any of us know this is the only life you get and you shouldn't waste any of it living a lie just to make others comfortable. Be happy and live life to the fullest ☺
This is the internet, there are bound to be others like you!
Internetrash love yourself go do what you love to do
oh man where'd the onions come from ;_; so happy for him, it was really awesome to see that even his Harvard coach was inspired by his motivations and personal growth that I feel like that, too, really helped him push further to achieve what he really wanted.
Happiness is being your self
No matter how you mold it - happiness is one and one is you
Luis Colon ...Do you realize how ironic that statement is?
oof you're right
Yeah you gotta butcher yourself to feel normal, right.
This made me cry... especially when he talked about his Korean grandmother.. remarkable story, I hope he achieves everything he wants to.
This video is really awesome I am FTM as well and I am a swimmer and people tell me I could go far with it but I wasn't sure I could but now I know I can so thank you thank you
Pay no attention to the guy going around being rude. Just a bad troll.
What an inspiration! Such a heartwarming video.
Leafsplash Inspiring how?
Fellow MCPS/Metro swimmer here! I've never heard of this guy before but his story is incredibly moving. Thanks for sharing!
When I read "this is his story", I thought it said "this is history". Now I'm wondering which one is more correct. ❤️
I'm so close to crying oh my gosh,, I didn't know this kind of amazing representation existed.. I'm a Mexican American trans boy and I can understand how scary it can be but I'm so glad to see someone, trans, and prospering in what they love to do
Boo hoo
I cried my first time watching this because it hits so close to home for me
He isn't a "man" until he buys his first fedora

i was almost upset at this comment until i read the end lol
what is Fedora?

yulpiewsert1 oic.. now I know. Thanks buddy.
This video was the best 13:37 mins of my life!! I was a swimmer too and I never heard something like this! OMG you rock boy 👏🏽 Congrats ❤️ Proud of you 🙏🏽
HARVARD? How can someone be so perfect?
Good at sports, smart and have a great personality.
I have my own opinions on Transgenders competing in sports but that is my opinion. I have no moral right to tell him what he can and can't do as long as he meets the requirements. I may not agree with him and his decisions but I respect them. I hope the best for his future as a swimmer.
Ram Castro
He can pump performance enhancing drugs(testosterone) into his body without any consequences. How is that fair to the other athletes?
I think F to M should be allowed but M to F just seems really unfair
Jacob Hawkins it is unfair that you're disrespecting people's identity and the decision that has been made to add a new Olympic rule for the fairness of equalisation!
How is it fair to compete against people who use steroids?
Jacob Hawkins why? After years of being on estrogen they no more physical strength than a biological woman.
Rabbi Avner Echoberg-Shekelstein surgery is the only way to help a trans person
Rabbi Avner Echoberg-Shekelstein therapy????? That hasn't worked EVER!! since the beginning of the 19 th century!! When they started therapy. Unless you've walked an inch in their shoes then don't even try to diagnose, help or even comment. These people have felt this way for as long as they can remember ANYTHING. Most as early as 4 years of age.
This is an amazing story of courage and walking one's own path in life. Thankfully, Schuyler seems to have received much love and support from those in his life along the way.
People are weird
Wow I love this on so many levels
Me too. So inspiring. Such a great attitude and personality.
I hope she* gets cancer before the next olympics
You are a remarkable person, thank you for sharing your story.
Tyler it's a matter of opinion. It takes a lot of courage to share your story with people who don't know you.
You spelt "mentally ill person" wrong.
I'm a gal swimmer. Always had thoughts of transitioning.
Get a good psychiatrist
M Mac you need to go to school, and meanwhile google intersex and start educating yourself on the subject before commenting, otherwise you are symply a pathetic troll. There are multiple kinds of diversity in human body than you thought. There are tons of baby boys being born with physical appearance of a girl and vice versa. For transgenders, the internal wiring in their brain and body is different from the outside appearance. It is each person who knows best who they are. Unless you're a medical researcher or their parents, go away and mind your own business.
EST sorry not playing along with this delusion
M Mac theeen don’t comment
Ilikebears shaddup libtard- I'll comment all I want
Thank you :)
Violet Heroine it's not fair tho
🦋🦋🦋
The person l mentioned was born a male & will be 69 this month.
~ Dori
I came here to make fun of this video but what really happened was I gained more respect for him
Nah
Her*
Don’t come here to make fun of this video. Go make fun of yourself who barely knows how to swim, yet alone make it to Harvard.
HER.
Pippy Domar if HE self identifies as a male then that is what you should refer to HIM as
For the comments complaining that there's even an inkling of a possibility HRT and doping are the same, let me hit you with some knowledge. Steroids and HRT are two different types of hormones. Steroid-based testosterone is something called anabolic, Synthetic testosterone (the kind trans-men take) is androgenic.
I’m an FTM transgender swimmer who’s forced into the closet by my parents. I’m hoping to find this kind of freedom and relief someday.
Leontes Asher hope you do, brother. Stay strong🌈
I'm an ftm swimmer too and I'm soooo far back in the closet
Leo Asher hats of to you man. Come out when you’re safe. I don’t even know you but I support you.
Dont worry. Im a ftm figure skater and I havent made it YET, but when I get my gold for the USA, Im gonna make all trans athletes proud, and so will you. Youre gonna make it so far in the world.
Too bad about your parents. Parents need to be kind and supportive to their kids. The rest of us should be kind and supportive too.
This guy came to my school and did an awesome job handling the discussion that my school had with him!
What an interesting way of spelling of his name. In Dutch, one could translate it as 'hider' as in; someone who hides themselves away. But the archaic spelling can also be interpreted as "Shelter". A place of protection. Schuyler found shelter by being himself. How wonderful!
my god he is cute
Tyler he
KimBap IsMyStyle she
Tyler Oh ryxb didn't.
At all the people commenting "she", I agree, his mother definitely is a little sweetheart.

This is beautiful!!! Don't hate just be happy for him or leave this video!
Aww that's so sweet that all the men on the Harvard men's team were open to Schyuler being on their team.
It's Harvard. I think it might play differently at the university of Texas.
If any athlete were to even question this, he'd be removed from the team (and possibly the school). Post-modern American diseducation.
Because a biological woman is not a threat.
Well yeah, skyler poses no threat
this was really inspirational...i'm getting closer and closer to coming out as trans and seeing that he can be happy and successful is really motivational...
lots of love
super inspiring, gives me a lot of strength that I face in daily life on so many level.
A Man Why?
DaniMarcusFTM you were not born a man therefore you are a women. The only explanation for this disgusting mind set is that you are a product of your environment
I take it that you are most likely a Christian? Right?
DaniMarcusFTM of course not that book is pile of rubble form start to finish I'm using commen sence.
A Man Well, if you are an atheist you follow science. Is that correct?
this is such an amazing story
The fact that he has found himself and is doing what he loves and that the people are supporting him in what he is and what he is doing that is amazing and inspirational for the people out there are that transgender
+lookingfordanny +Lucas Devlin Let's check the DSM, shall we? "gender nonconformity is not in itself a mental disorder. The critical element of gender dysphoria is the presence of clinically significant distress associated with the condition."
+Lucas Devlin And he did get help, that is why he transitioned?? He got diagnosed and then he treated it..
Sam WInchester Lol the DSM publishing committee is highly politicized and that change was only made in the most recent version of the DSM after pressure from trans groups- they made the change based on literally no new science, research, or information at all. Beyond that, if you actually think men who think they're women and want to chop their weiners off because of it are sane in any way, you're admitting to being a complete idiot.
djvbervuib3irv3r I think you just don't like change at this point. Science changes, it's cool.
*her
Round of applause for this guy, he's so open about being trans and is a great educator
You are an incredible young man Schuyler. Keep on smiling. Thank you for your beautiful video.
so inspirational I love this
HEINrich aus dem HAUSE chill
Ok I'm sooo! confused her nipples are showing and no one cares, why don't women athletes swim topless? Same thing right.
What intelligent and enlightened parents he's got. I wish everyone was so open and progressive.
One of the best transitions I’ve ever seen 👌🏼
As a transgender boy, this makes me really excited to know I can actually further my experiences and not be stopped just because I am transgender.
dat boi "As a transgender"
"Because I am transgender"
HA!
DONT listen to ANYONES hate
dat boi don't let people judge you just because your different you are who you are and be yourself!
You want to be a man, that doesn't make you one.
I want to be a rhino. But even if I get a horn placed on my face and walk on all fours every day doesn't mean the government wont tax my paychecks.
Except for joining the U.S. military ;)
Where do I find parents as supportive as these? Walmart?
That's not supportive. Those are careless, non-authoritative scared parents who don't dare speak up. No thanks
Way to go Schuyler. Hugs and love to you from North Carolina.♥️ Thank you for sharing. This will help others.
He is amazing and has a lot of respect from me.
sod gape Jesus Christ you're a terrible person
It isn’t transphobia if we are speaking facts
I think he was a merman in his past life
@Celtic Snow too bad adding an extra letter doesn't add to the number of braincells

@TobyDraws no pretty sure it's a she maam
As in Ethel? Okay, someone had to go there, so I did. 😏
This is indeed very motivational! Keep being happy!
...hmmm....motivational...in what respect-----to identify with a lie?
sam james Why can't you just show respect? It's 2017 and people are free to be who they want to be and if you don't like it move to the woods and be alone if you want handle people wanting to be happy
StOp SleEpInG On mOnStA X
Sam is right and you are a dipshit.
So, there is a male weight lifter and he competes as a woman. Of course he wins. Is that right?
It is down right stupid to have transgenders "picking" whose rights they infringe upon. Men can now use the womens rest room. Pretty stupid.
Lucas Devlin
I agree 100%. This young lady has a serious mental health issue. I hope she finds happiness.
+eden0224....Wow....you clearly haven't seen the video----this is a woman and genetically (not the fantasy of thought) she will remain as such.
This is a really emotional story for me because transgender is a really big deal where I live, and there are people on my swim team and show choir team who are transgender so hearing this story is really cool and emotional all at the same time.
Someone give a big hug to Schuyler's parents. They raised a superman and did a great job at it!!
So much disrespect in this comment section
well its a sensitive issue thats to be expected and he himself will most probably accept the negativity of his decisions.
fannewmoon1 its called common sense
Ad Meliora
Get educated.
yan guy
Common sense is to treat others how u would like to be treated. But nope shitbags like you wanna feel superior and then come crying when others return the favour.
Add Meliora There are people born with both male and female body parts. And some even have both XX and XY chromosomes at the same time. It's called being hermaphrodite or "intersex" google it before you shout out nonsense like that.
Oh my gosh his parents are so wonderful and supportive. He's so lucky!
Excuse me sir but you can't be that cute AND that confident oml
Wow. Powerful. Inspirational. Courageous. This has help save my life.
One of the most greatest and inspiring videos I've ever engaged in
I met him yesterday: THE BIGGEST SWEETHEART
This comment section is disrespectful people calling him an it or correcting people when they write he.
Why can't people accept people for who they are
Tyler I was meant to put he. Don't know why you are correcting me
Because we're people.
Because she is a biological female. Not a man. So why can't she just accept herself for who she really is?
if it was the other way around (male to female athlete) it wouldnt be fair in competitions. as male athletes are physically stronger than females.
compacto bokia but if a person were transitioning from male to female she would most likely be taking the female hormones estrogen and progesterone that would change her body to have similar female attributes as her cisfemale counterparts.
umm. hormones dont change your skeletal and bone structure as well as muscle density.
Garrett it actually does change your muscle mass and weight/bmi
does it change your skeletal structure? no.
Karolina S Still female muscles and male muscles are different.
When he was talking about his grandmother and talking care of his parents, I cried a lot
Going though the comments is so depressing. There’s a lot of support but an equal amount of hate. And for a solid portion of you, your reasoning for hating trans is religion. Just accept that the world is moving away from the close mindedness and people can come out of their shells and be truly happy. Time to evolve, people.
But what about a man entering in the women category? Is that fair?
Leonore Rochlitz you mean a man that has transitioned to be a woman? Totally fair.
Luciana Martinez Sure, whatever. But how is that fair? All the men would easily beat the women, no?
Leonore Rochlitz men and women have their strengths and weaknesses. While men have a powerful upper body women have a strong lower body. Although men can develop muscle faster than women, women are much more flexible which can prevent injury. Women are also biologically evolved to withstand more pain than men. The concept of boys vs girls is an old one but not completely necessary. Why look at gender when we can look at skill?
PREACH!
some of these comments make me sick. honestly? first it was race, then sexuality, now religion and transgender. when will we learn from the past and just except and love everyone as human? I don't get it.
It's not a delusion. There are more gender types than male and female. Some men are born with female bodyparts. Some people are born with both male and female body parts. And some female are born with male body parts. It's called 'intersex' and has been a common thing in nature since nature existed. That's why education is so important.
you and others think it's delusion because it deviates from what you consider normal when in reality life is so much more complicated. And it's their lives? Not being straight, not being cis, not being a certain religion does not harm others. At most it makes them uncomfortable, and that is the most egotistical thing to try and deny other people's truths because it simply makes YOU "uncomfortable." Aren't you even a little embarrassed to care so much what other people do with their lives?
so? even if you're right who cares? LEAVE PEOPLE ALONE. if other people living their lives is such a problem to you, you have a mental problems too
Acceptance? I've always wondered the same thing about trans individuals. Why can't they just accept themselves the way they were born? You were born a male. You were born a female. Accept that. Just because you feel like the other sometimes, doesn't mean you were put in the wrong body. Accept that.
missylks123 why don't amputees just accept that they have no limbs and crawl on the ground? why don't cancer patients just accept they have cancer and die? why can't you accept that you are an ignorant bigot and you're the problem? not others?
Paving the way for all trans athletes out there.
Yikes this comment section is really mean and narrowminded. How about you guys be happy that Schuyler is happy & comfortable in his own skin.
*her
*his. I hope one day you become more accepting of others & happier with your life. Goodnight
I don't condone mental illness
kildozer _56_2 he doesn't have a mental illness.
THANKS YOU SO MUCH OLYMPICS! THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST INSPIRING STORIES!
Thank you, Schuyler -- so inspiring! Also really happy for you.
This is incredible, thank you Schuyler ❤️
the Dad and Mom referring her as him/he and fully accepted him as a son was gem!
I love this series and I can't wait for more!!!
This shows how important acceptance and support actually are. His parents, his grandma, his coach, his teammates.
OMG I WATCHED HIS TOP SURGEEY VIDEO BEFORE TO GIVE ME HOPE! IM SO PROUD OF HIM!!!!!
