  • SS United States overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from all corners of the nation and beyond, the Conservancy stated. The cost to relocate the SS United States and U.S. District ruling ended a years-old rent dispute between the conservancy and its landlord, Penn Warehousing. It stemmed from an August 2021 decision by Penn Warehousing to double the ship’s daily dockage to $1,700, an increase the conservancy refused to accept.
When the conservancy continued to pay its previous rate, set in 2011, Penn Warehousing terminated the lease in March 2022. After much legal wrangling, Brody held a bench trial in January but also encouraged the two sides to reach a settlement instead of leaving it up to her.
She ultimately ruled that the conservancy’s failure to pay the new rate did not amount to a contract breach or entitle Penn Warehousing to damages. However, she found that under Pennsylvania contract law, the berthing agreement is terminable at will with reasonable notice.
The Conservancy has been is in litigation on the matter, since early December (2023)
SS United States is a retired ocean liner built in 1950-51 for the United States Lines. The ship is the largest ocean liner constructed entirely in the United States and the fastest ocean liner to cross the Atlantic in either direction, retaining the Blue Riband for the highest average speed since her maiden voyage in 1952 and still holds title today. She was designed by American Naval Architect William Francis Gibbs.
The SS United States last journey was in 1969. The fast-growing air transportation industry made cross-Atlantic commercials unprofitable. In the early 1990s, the ship was sent to Turkey to have its entire interior walls stripped to its bare bones. Then in 1996, the ship arrived in Philadelphia to be a riverfront Casino / Hotel, but that plan failed.
If you would like to make a donation to help save the ship, go to www.savetheuni... to make a donation.
The SS United States Conservatory bought the ship. The owner of the group is the Great-Granddaughter of William Gibbs, the creator of this ship. They have been actively trying to find an owner to restore the ship. Many people are interested, just nothing has been finalized. Donations are keeping this ship afloat.

That’s not talking the close to a billion in today’s dollars to bring her to code to be used as anything. Anyone spending that kind of money will need to dry dock her and get the hull cleaned and all the steel plates inspected. Under water surveying shows nothing. The Conservancy really should look into getting the ship designated as a historical landmark and get federal funding to at least paint the ship and do basic maintenance. Nobody is going to want that rusting hulk of a ship in their ports I'm afraid, and the costs to restore the ship without federal funding are not realistic. I was born and raised on Staten Island, New York. I crossed NY harbor on the Staten Island ferry and observed the United States entering or leaving the harbor so many times, including passing along side this beautiful liner. This is indeed a beautiful ship and deserves to be restored and displayed for all to see. I believe it is only fitting that she be displayed in the city she served so well, New York. There must be some place there that she can call home. Ed C

Finding a permanent home berth is NOT what they need at this juncture... because of the time constraints, they MUST find a temporary berth so that the ship does not incur a $60K/mo docking fee, plus whatever other fees/fines they will have to pay due to the breach of the court order. I think that their best bet is to work out some arrangement with North Atlantic Ship Repair (formerly the Philadelphia Naval Yard) for a temporary berth until a permanent home can be found. There are numerous locations that appear to be unused and large enough to moor her. Good report Jaime! 🙂

Philadelphia naval yards a good idea. If they could line up the timing right the operation to move the JFK to Brownsville could overlap so once the super carriers guided out into the Atlantic and one ocean going tug takes over the squad of smaller tugs could head back up the river and bring the United States down to the navy yard and into the JFKs vacated berth. The liners not deteroriating at any great speed, if they can find somewhere rent free to leave her and she survives this whole saga her longterm chances may start to increase simply by the passage of time and that she continues to exist.

While this is a good idea the shipyard most likely would not agree unless the association can verify that they can move the ship again when the berth is needed again for a navel ship. As usual this problem comes down to money. Until meaningful fund raising can be done to both pay for docking and repairs such as repainting to make the ship look presentable again it will be hard to get support to save the ship. I am a railroad fan and we have the same problem in saving many old railroad engines and cars. Many pieces of historical train items have been lost due to not finding a good place to store and exhibit them. Our best example of saving such a big engine was the Union Pacific Big Boy steam engine. While there are several of these engines saved as static exhibits, the Union Pacific Railroad chose to save one and keep it operational as a goodwill public relations item for them. Maybe the association should try and get a major cruise ship company to fund at least cosmetic repairs to the United States ship and promote cruising by showing the great history of cross ocean travel. Of course that means the ship would have to be docked in a major city where it would be accessible for public tours so the company that paid for the repairs could benefit from the publicity to promote their cruises.

It was a beautiful ship. The reality is, the conservancy bought it in 2011 - and in the 13 years since has not gotten together a concrete plan forward with any legs. The claim is they have plans, but at this point that's what they are - lots of drawings, but no backing to come close to making it a reality. Right now it's begging for scraps just to pay the current maintenance costs. If nobody is stepping up to fund actually doing what they are proposing, it can't last in the current state forever.
They got into a fight over dockage fees of $1700 per day. A laid up ship of her size (not actively doing cargo operations or just idle between operations) would be charged $3,081.07 a day per day in a Port of Philadelphia berth vs the private on they are in now. They basically couldn't raise a reasonable dockage fee, nor money to own their own dock etc....
There is no general will, and without it there is just no way.

Heck, even Gibbs and Cox (the company which built her) is also still around and builds ships for the US Navy there as well. Florida has a harsh climate for an older ship like this and will beat her up just as much as Philly did, just look at what happened to the original Queen Elizabeth when she was there for a few years before being resold and sadly becoming BBQ.

@@jdslyman1720 The firm of Gibbs and Cox were the designers of the ship. She was built by Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co. I think it needs to be stressed that William Francis Gibbs and his brother merely headed up the company. They were smart enough to hire better educated and more talented people than they themselves, and it was THOSE EMPLOYEES, and not Gibbs, who actually designed the ship.
According to various biographies Gibbs was an autocratic, foul-mouthed tyrant, to some degree a misogynist, dismissive and intolerant of any opinion other than his own. So nasty in fact that one of his step-sons refused to attend his funeral.
Susan Gibbs is a nice person. I've met her. She believes in the cause of preserving the ship, although why she so idolizes that curmudgeon of a grandfather is beyond me . But after fifty years of trying, of getting no real, concrete plans in place, it's time to put the begging bowl away and face reality.
I think it's safe to say that The City of Long Beach wishes they'd never taken on the Queen Mary. That whole fiasco lost nearly $32 million before COVID closed down the ship as a tourist attraction. Since re-opening there has been a reported turn-around and some profits. BUT those profits are nothing when compared to the amounts need for upkeep and repairs that are needed, and have been deferred.
I have a friend, a yachtsman, who says "boats are holes in the water into which you throw money." Derelict and obsolete ocean liners are just larger holes in the the water, demanding more and more money.
Give the ship to the creditors, let them either scrap her scuttle her and let the ship become an artificial reef for divers and marine life. One location could be the New Jersey battleship. It’s not that far away, and there’s enough room for her to fit. Camden is where it’s at, and if you look, you can the United States from the New Jersey. Also, imagine a museum of both. One of a kind. Might also give United States another record. Biggest ship museum by volume! New Jersey or bust!

It will never be a museum. It’s a gutted shell. The 10s of millions of if not a billion dollars it would take for it to meet codes as a hotel or anything. It would be a money pit. Just painting it is 10s of millions. Plus 10 plus million just to dry dock clean and inspect. Anything to do with ships is high dollars

Just move her to Florida. Making her a dive site is discrimination to small children and people with disabilities whe can't dive. Better to move her to a red state.

Gotta get her up in Bayonne or JC in liberty state Park where the Big J should have been moored. Some of her passengers were processed on Ellis Island. (Post 1924 not many stepped foot on the island unless detained). No other location could he as meaningful.

Unfortunately, the interior was stripped such as it was. However, this ship could be a centerpiece of a waterfront venue offering restaurants, retail shops, and lodging aboard much like the city of Long Beach California's Queen Mary. Only recently the City of Long Beach decided to invest millions over several years in hopes of the ship turning a profit.

Are you going to front the hundreds of millions it’s going to take to bring it to code? And also it will be required to go in dry dock just like these museum ships from time to time. USS alabama was jacked out of the mud in place to be inspected and repaired at the cost of millions. There the government has required it to be kept up
