This plane also had lead singer of La Bouche on board. R.i.p Melanie Thornton 💙
Gross negligence on the airline's part, more like.
Yep, that too.
@ 6:25 "He was demoted from Instructor to Captain". With his multiple failures to qualify in types and other issues, why was he an IP to start with?
That's a very good question. Crossair had pretty much ignored his history.
I would have suggested McDonalds.
The cross-cockpit authority gradient was significant with this crew. The Captain was far more experienced than the First Officer which would have prevented him challenging the Captain’s poor decisions. However, the principal cause of the accident was the airline not terminating the Captain’s employment due to his inadequate performance during his previous checks.
the FO was also rebuked about the runway report which would have caused him to close down a little.
How comes he wasn't fired after causing a plane to be written off?!
That's the big question!

Is this the flight where Melanie, the singer, was a passenger and did not make it? RIP
yup
This was an excellent video, very well narrated. It is much better than the last two that I watched about the same accident. Now subscribed!
Thank you!
I remember this well. I was a Crossair mechanic based at Basel-Mulhouse at the time. A very dark day indeed, and completely avoidable.
indeed!
Why did they still keep him in the airline after so many problems he had. That was a crash waiting to happen.
Video was great as usual, keep it up!
Thanks a lot :)
Crossair had many problems back in the day. A looming insolvency, and a lack of good pilot checking were just two of them. The final report states:
"Over a long period of time, the responsible persons of the airline did not make correct
assessments of the commander’s flying performance. Where weaknesses were
perceptable, they did not take appropriate measures."
C TOUJOURS FACILE DE CRITIQUER UN MORT

Absolute shame. He should not have been allowed to fly a plane ever again...he took his own life and sent 23 people with him. If you remember, Melanie Thornton from La Bouche was on that plane too, so sad. Days before she died, she said, "I'll be home for Christmas." SHAME on the pilot and company. Money will not bring back pain nor people.
Passionfruit was on this plane too :'( I still often get goosebumbs when I listen to their or Melanies songs
So you're telling me that he flipped a switch that ruined a multi-million dollar airplane, and all they did was demote him?
yup...
It’s the right thing. If you go around sacking people for mistakes, you stop finding out about the mistakes. Now that’s dangerous.
After having read the whole final report cpt. lutz reminded me of the pilot in the famous aviation skit made by swiss comedian Emil Steinberger
Company is just as liable as they knew his past history and had many chances to fire him.
Marsha, you are so Wright.
Way ohhhh way, duo's people not fiar him.
This is not Wright.
Bhut dhar is a God.
End a Karma for that man.
C vous que j ' aurais licencier vous le connaissez le pilote non
Alors garder vos commentaires ils était pilote instructeur
Who was the pilot? Homer Simpson?
I'm on a random binge of you content. I already saw content about most of this cases . But I really enjoy the way you present them. Keep doing what you are doing.
thank you?
I hope your videos continue to raise awareness about air safety and how so many accidents are preventable.
So much experience yet such poor airmanship. Truly an interesting case. Amazing video as always!
Experience =/= Wisdom
Some people manage to just wing it (pun intended)
I forgot to mention - not everyone died on this crash. 9 out of 33 survived.

This story is unreal..
Why did you say it s unreal?
She was SO CLOSE to having a safe arrival and being with us TODAY!
Guy wrote off a plane and carries on in his job (still senior). PRISON
Grow up, child.
how is it possible that such an enjoyable and very detailed video has only these few views. you deserve much more continue like this, because you are already much ahead of other creators
thank you :)
Just found your channel........ video was well done and straight to the point! I'm your newest Subscriber! I look forward to more videos! Happy new year!
Welcome to the channel :) And thank you very much, happy new year!
Great video!
Exquisitely explained Non precision approach.Great pilots background explained.
Thank you.I subscribed!
Thank you very much!
As of today, the guy still believes the wings flap faster when you push the throttle.
and he flew for 20000 hours?? My god
anyways love your videos, fantastic story-telling and narrating, would highly appreciate it if you could add closed captions!
thanks! I'll consider that. does youtube not offer automatic closed captions?
@@AirspaceVideos sorry yeah it does, and i just noticed it's doing a pretty good job actually although it's not always accurate. keep up the good work :D
Right, great! I sure will :)
This man retracted the landing gear while the plane was on the GROUND. And they let him fly after that? What the hell.
great video :D
thanks!
The negligence does indeed fall on the airline regarding the incompetent pilot, but it amazes me that the first officer had only 500 hours logged time. That is just ridiculous. It seems like I spent 500 hours just hearing the phrase, "Don't bust minimums."
I explain how and why young first officers reach the cockpit so soon in europe in my video "flawed logic". I don't think the lack of hours is a problem, I see the problem more in the age and authority gap between the two pilots.
Nice analysis. I like your English commentary.
thanks a lot!
@@AirspaceVideos The graphics are good and are something that other, similar videos do not have.
Thanks, this is my goal - to provide something the other crash investigation videos do not have. glad you like it! :)
Unbelievable!!! How can a man with so many failures end up as an aircraft Captain? In my opinion, he shouldn't have even been allowed into the cockpit of a commercial aircraft, let alone be in a position of seniority. Gross negligence from the airline....
Not just a captain but the commentary said he was an instructor until demoted
Je dirait simplement que vous été nulle à bon entendeur
( c facile de critiquer )
He probably was related to someone in management.
Two singers from the trio Passion Fruit also died in the crash.
wow. So poor performance but almost 20.000 hrs of flight???
Yeah, a bit like your English.😂
@@franzvoss4808 Not everyone’s first language is English. This especially true when it comes to comments about a video on an event that did not take place in an English-speaking country.
Melanie Thornton, vocalist of La Bouche, was in that flight.
RIP Melanie
I was going to watch this because I thought it said captains negligee. Oh well
😄
Rip la Bouche
So the guy was literally Homer Simpson: ruclips.net/video/nLGzojday4o/видео.html
Yet he somehow got up to 15,000h...unbelievable...
He brought the landing gear up on a parked aircraft and was flying over Italy and the passengers knew because of road signs the co pilot was good
They failed to tell fo that he was only adult/sane in cockpit(
It was not gross negligence, just gross stupidity.
Mr Airspace, I would guess that you are Dutch. I’m American, so pardon the inability to be certain about the accent. Thank you for the amazing videos and insight!
Almost, I'm Swiss :) Thank you!
The singer Melanie Thorton from."La Bouche" was on this flight.
This captain shouldn't have even been allowed to fly private planes. What an idiot, and the people who let him in the captain's position, let alone instructor, are also responsible for this
The approach was a poor design too and was an accident waiting to happen.
disagree there, what brings you to that conclusion?
@@AirspaceVideos it was a dive and drive with, if I recall, having flown it a few times, more than one level altitude. Most NPAs can be flown CDA which is MUCH safer, this one couldn’t. Funny, the authorities agreed which is why they installed the uncategorised ILS which is better, but still not ideal. That runway, or more particularly its approaches have always been a hazard.
@@AirspaceVideos it’s had multiple level off altitudes and couldn’t be flown CDA which most NPAs can and which is safer. Much safer. It also had a course change during the final approach which is absolutely ridiculous and obviously dangerous. The authorities obviously agreed as they installed the uncategorised ILS which is also unsafe. They just need to abandon that runway.
Hm well, weren't most "old" NPAs designed in that way? I recall flying many of those during initial IR-training... but yeah, runway 28 is suboptimal, I agree there.
So much politics involved in LSZH, it's terrible.
RIP Melanie Thornton… she was aboard
Just a little pronunciation thing: it’s spoken “SUB-suhquently”, not sub-see-quently. I know it’s probably petty af 👀
Noted 😄 I'm no native english speaker so you'll probably hear more mispronounciations, but I'll do my best!
@@AirspaceVideos I’m not either but this one I happened to know. It makes sense too. Normally the emphasis is on the first syllable of “sequence” so I don’t blame you one bit for doing that in subsequently as well 🙂
(I mispronounce words too and never knew until I come across it after 32 y of learning and speaking English. English speakers themselves mispronounce words as well so no worries about it. 🙂
I'm sure they do :) Thanks anyways!
Leave him alone, he has a very sexy accent!
Pourquoi ✍️ écrire capitaine négligence je suis pas tu tout d ' accord avec vous cordialement 👽
The sad part was the so called Captain was incompetent. A time bomb waiting to go off. Sadly Melanie Thornton was on the flight.
Why was he not sacked
Melanie Thornton from La Bouche was on this flight. I wonder if she was singing all the way down to her death? 💀 Maybe she was singing “Sweet Dreams”, “You Won’t Forget Me” or “Amazing Grace.” May her soul Rest In Peace La Bouche was my favourite band back in the 1990s
You’re recycling content from years ago.
On every short that does this, I’m giving a thumbs-down.
