I learned and allowed myself to take breaks from art. Previously, I was pushing myself too much.. thinking I had to do as much as I can each and every day. This was just stressing me out more and pushing me into burnout. For the most part, I draw every day, but now I allow myself to do other things (reading, cooking, exercising, casual gaming, etc.) at certain times so I can relax and reset.

Best tip that’s changed my art was, making art should be fun for you. I hated making art that I thought others would like or would help me blow up on social media. I only make art I like or want to make and I now draw everyday religiously.

Honestly all i did was just took your advice and limit my time on social media, even going as far as taking a break from my channel(not this one) and learning to use the tools and assets I've had acquired over the years to 'improve' my skillset that was just on the side catching dust. I'm happy to make i feel less anxious and started drawing again, though not at the level i want to be, but i know i'll get there. It's a process after all. Excellent vid and Thank you again for more life lessons.

Something I started doing that would seem like a no brainer, is drawing what *I* want to draw.
I've drawn and doodled my entire life, but have been actively studying art for 6 years now, and for the first 5 , I was so concerned and eventually paralyzed by the business and analytics side of being an artist in todays age. With the intro of AI, I felt like making it as an artist just wasn't something truly realistic anymore and had a big long look at my priorities and focuses.
Deciding that I was just going to make my own stuff and be content with honing and improving my craft for me has lifted a weight I'd put on myself and my art and after the last year of imposter syndrome and setting goals instead of actively striving for them, I am finally making art again.

I've started taking more breaks from the screen recently; my overall health the past couple of years--especially since last fall--has declined considerably and screen fatigue has taken even more of a toll as a result. I've also started taking breaks from everything, including naps--something I was previously almost never capable of doing (I suppose it's become possible as the exhaustion has just too much), which has made a great difference. Also, when I do use screens, I no longer mind messing with the settings (lowering brightness, changing color temperature) in order to reduce eyestrain, which I practically never did before because I felt the need to always have the best color accuracy and what-not that I could have--which wasn't even necessary a lot of the time--of course my eye health is more important. I'm slowly but surely starting to recover and excited to continue my artistic endeavors with more energy again. Thanks for the chance! And for these videos! 🙌💗

What makes my life easier is to accept my production rate. Not every artist can produce at light speed, some of us (me) are more season oriented, I will have a season of high yield and a season of recharge. For me, it is directly tied to stress since I work a full time job in addition to making art, so I have time where I can give more and times when naturally, I have to give less to my art. ❤ thank you for your videos Josh!

To make my life as an artist easier, I've turned my lunch breaks at work into art breaks at work. It helps on multiple levels, as it gives me something to look forward to in the work day. But also, I can feel less bad if I'm "too tired" to create and practice art after work.

One thing I did to help my pursuit of art is to start painting on my phone. I had for too long made it difficult to get set up and ready to draw/paint and it made making it a habit too difficult (particularly when I've been sick or injured as I have been recently); now that I've explored phone painting, not only have I realized that you can do a lot more than I thought possible on a phone, but it's so much easier to just make a quick sketch or doodle anytime and anywhere (I don't have a tablet, btw, so this as close as I can get), so it's easier to make this a habit. And I usually spend more time that I intend to on these doodles. Of course, there are limitations (my phone has no stylus support, so I always use my finger (not as restrictive as you might think!), and of course it doesn't have the overall capacity of a desktop or laptop, so when I do want to make something more finished (or continue something I started on my phone), it's easy to move to the computer to continue working on it there. I encourage everyone to give a try if you haven't, it's amazing what smartphones are capable of these days! 🤠

I interviewed James Jean back in the early 2000's when he was still primarily a comic book artist doing exquisite covers for DC's Fables. He also provided my magazine with a stunning cover that he had repurposed from an illustration he had done for Men's Health Germany about bizarre maladies, of all things. Since then as you said, he's done so many different creative ventures including not only designing clothing for Prada, but having the face of a glass skyscraper in Tokyo wrapped with one of his paintings! He also linked up with another of my interview subjects, David Choe (before he became insanely rich and famous). James actually plays keyboards in Choe's band, Mangchi (and you can see James in some of the live performance videos). There are times where his art has evolved into some truly dark and bizarre hallucinogenic imagery that was too much for me, but the many evolutions within his art is I think the clearest evidence that the only one he panders to is his own id.

Something I started doing when I first started art was watching an art timelapse or a tutorial once a day to get me into the habit of thinking about art, and seeing the process or learning. It helped me get past the 'nothing I make is good so I don't want to make' because I didn't feel like I was just drawing for the sake of it and not getting anywhere.

What helped me get back into drawing, was journaling with fountain pens. I had been practicing foundation drawing exercises and it caused me to dislike drawing and in turn gave me a very long artblock. I persisted because I thought it was what I must do in order to be a good artist. I artblocked myself so badly by making drawing tedious and boring. I hated it for a while haha. I stopped forcing myself to draw, and decided to focus on my journal, decorating it stickers and washi tape, and writing with very pretty pens in pretty ink, and naturally started to doodle and having fun again.

The number one thing I learned is to listen to my body. Having gone to the point of burn out once, listening to my body has become one of my greatest skills, it lets me know when I can focus to achieve my creative goals and when to stop and recharge even when it seems like I can still keep pushing. Taking breaks and recharging is a big part of being productive and yes, it can be frustrating when you feel like you always needing extra time to recharge or that you need to take more breaks than most people. It is daring to want to push, push and push because you've been on a roll or because a deadline is approaching, but you can get a lot more done when you understand yourself, your limits and your strengths.

Life as an artist got easier for me when I finally clued in to the option to just not make the kind of art I don't enjoy making. I cut down on the amount of colours I use in a piece and put more focus on typography and fun graphical elements rather than toiling away at meticulous shading or dragging my way through background rendering.

  •  8 месяцев назад +2

Something I've learned as an artist to make things easier is to actually have some sort of process when it comes to making my works. Often, I've just kinda *jumped into things* but now, I'm getting better with nailing down my concept and inspiration, doing preliminary research, and sketching multiple compositions before beginning the final version. It may seem odd to not have had this down earlier, but hey. It's a journey, not a marathon.

Something that I try to do that makes the creative aspect of my art-making easier is to make sure that there is plenty of variety in my life in general. It's too easy for us to get stuck in a routine that becomes more and more monotonous-- this can make being creative with one's ideas more difficult-- especially, I think, for digital artists who spend a lot of time in front of a computer, at home and usually in the exact same spot. So, whenever I can, I travel, whether it's to my front yard, a nearby park or to another city or state. And variety with different mediums and art forms (analog drawing/painting/sculpting, music, etc.) helps with my creativity When I go back to working digitally. The same goes for the types of things I consume as well-- variety is the spice of life. When I do have to stay at home, I set several alarms to remind myself (I WILL forget otherwise) to leave the computer for a bit, and if possible the house as well. In short, go "touch grass", everyone 😅, we all need it. P.S. This is my second attempt commenting because YT decides to hide (or delete?) my first attempt for no reason; too many emojis, maybe? I've removed most this time...

In my case something I do in my off times in art is learning Japanese. I started learning it in middle school with sub par classes, but took it up in high school again with better classes. The whole learning process as well as the connections you can make by learning a new language is fascinating. Watching this video made me realize that THAT is part of the reason why I study Japanese. Japanese, among 3D, reading, watching new movies and exercising are things that help me take time away from art.
One thing I want to do more of to make life easier is to create more! I've just been stuck practicing and practicing that by the end of the day I end up only doing that practice. Therefore I want to create more stuff I want to create, and interleave it with practice that is applicable in that moment, rather than some distant day in the future. Really great video Josh!

What has helped me? This isn’t strictly related to just art, but visualizing my day. Literally sitting down, closing my eyes, thinking of what I have written down in my planer, and mentally going through each and every action in my head as if I’m actually doing it.
    Down to the smallest detail.
Like this: when I get off work I’m going to walk to my car, open the door, put my bag in, sit down, pull on my seat belt. Put the key in the ignition. Turn. Navigate out of the parking lot. Drive home. Get out of the car. Pull out my bag. Close the car door. Walk up to the house. Go inside. Set down my bag next to my bed. Sit down. Pull out my tablet. Open the drawing app. Pull up a reference. Start drawing. Etc..
When I visualize it helps prime my mind for what I’m actually going to do. That way I don’t get sidetracked like happens 100% of the time when I don’t and end up wasting hours of my life.
It also will bring to mind things that would actually pop into my head while doing the action. Like oh yeah, I needed to run to the store as I drive past it in my head. So I can add that to my list and be mentally prepared for the chunk of time that will take out and not feel like I’m scrambling when it takes me by surprise when I’m actually driving.
Dunno if that makes sense. But it helps organize my life, which helps me have time for art. It can also be used to practice even before drawing too.
Anyway, that’s all I got. Cheers.

One problem I’ve always had with art, and basically anything I do, is that I’m a perfectionist, and it gets debilitating at times. Not starting or just straight up trashing works because my stress levels are through the roof thinking about whether my art will be good enough or not. I am beginning to realize, however, that once I stop drawing in my worth as an artist from the outside perception of other people and begin creating what I actually like from the inside of my heart, my perfectionism almost dissolves and I get not only super focused, but I become happier as well. My art also looks better when I make it in a relaxed state as apposed to the stressed out perfectionist state. Art journeys are a whole process, not just in skill, but in personal growth as well. It’s real interesting and it’s an ongoing experience I’d never trade off. I hope yall have a great day/night! ✌️

What has helped me as an artist is the constant switch from traditional art and digital art. I find that switching mediums helps u improve a lot faster. I'm a storytelling artist so I switch the process from traditional: sketching or thumbnailing and inking. Then turn to digital for colour, line art and screentones. U see thongs traditionally that u don't see while working digital and likewise.
For example: line weight! I've been focusing on line weight more since going digital and it has improved my traditional drawings A LOT. Drawing traditional has helped me sketch and draw MUCH faster (it all still boils down to practice tho, but I only have a pc and drawing tablet so I can't practice that much digital).
I hope I can inspire someone to try out different mediums!

one thing I've started doing to make life easier as an artist is when i am not creating a piece i am studying fundamentals and having fun with it( by not being attached to the outcome). i also go to the gym early in the morning because as an artist who struggles with adhd and depression , if i get my workout out of the way i can focus on other things throughout the day and it gives me more peace of mind when creating. also make sure to take care of life outside of art and clean up your space so your brain isn't in survival mode. its hard to create when your amygdala is firing constantly to protect you . Ive been enjoying learning the fundamentals slowly and going at my own pace . everyone learns and comprehends differently.

Great video! I'll be revisiting this multiple times.
A huge personal skill I had to learn as a new artist, especially as one with limited energy from long covid, was to allow imperfections and to be kind to myself when I need to take time away from art. I still struggle with getting discouraged sometimes if a piece doesn't match what I wanted, but rather than failing to move onto the next one as I rumiate on the one that came up short, I can more often accept it as a learning experience and the artwork for what it is and progress onto the next piece.

As strange as it seems it is challenging a you have to create very strong habits. It requires discipline. But I always begin my day with some Yoga and meditation. Planning your day for yourself is quite challenging because you have to do what your emplyer did for you. During the pandemic I found out that I had adhd (btw, trying to figure our your mental health issues during a mass traumatic event like the pandemic is a hell I will not wish on anyone), after decades of being told that my focus/art block/anxiety issues were due to a lack of a good sleep schedule. After my diagnosis, I found an ADHD coach to help me learn how to understand my "ADHD monkey mind" as well as how live as a creative adult. I am a professional video editor and by the time I get done with my day, doing anything creative seems exhausting. However, there was a part of me that was burning to create, but I was just too drained to really make time for it and it was easy for my fear of failure to step in and block me. My coach and I discovered ways to "fill my creative cup"- things which truly recharged my art batteries and relaxed my anxious brain.
These things include: going to bed at a decent hour, carving out a time of the day that I keep sacred for doing something creative for myself, and doing at least 45 min of some exercise a day (it can be anything from yoga, to walking, to ice skating, to playing Just Dance). During my sacred creative time, I have made it so that I am doing something that is creative for me- so no working on any of my projects. This is just a time for being playfully creative: it can be anything such as journaling, creating a playlist based on the story I am writing, coloring pages, or sitting with my eyes closed while listening to an album on my record player. The record player makes it so that I can't really skip around the tracks, so I am forced to just sit and listen until it's time to flip the record, or else I would spend hour "looking for that perfect song".
Thanks so much for the fantastic video, the section about growing and exploring really spoke to me and gave me more ideas on how to "fill my creative cup", I really needed to see/hear the message and the case studies within.
    Cheers!

a good example of letting things take as long as they need without worrying about it but growing still is how I learned english to pretty much native level over the course of a decade with videogames series and other media, I started doing that when I was 12, by the time I got to 22 I was extremely far ahead of my peers even though I took a decade because I can access resources like this video that simply there aren't in spanish for example, I work in videogames so thats why I did it in the first place, making videogames without knowing english is extremely hard because the number and quality of resources to learn from is so small. This video is really good and I'm glad more people are talking about how powerful can be to have very long projects without a deadline for improvement on yourself, it might be slow but if you can add it to an already busy life and be somewhat consistent you will grow dramatically over time and its really worth doing

You’re a very interesting person bro, congratulations for all your successes this far! I just want to mention first that, I am an artist I use iPad and Procreate. I don’t really care about views or likes or anything I just want to post my artwork for the fun of it, I haven’t posted anything yet, bc I am just focused on perfecting my craft and putting a new spin on the art space. Everyone can just post time lapses or tutorials and that’s fine, there’s nothing wrong with that but, me personally I feel that I can do more to stand out and bring more diversity to this space. And if we're being honest I am still in that beginning phase of trying to figure out what that is?
Anyway, thank you for the advice, bro it really helps and I appreciate you, for taking the time to make this video!
    Cheers, much love!!!

One thing I've done as an artist that made things easier is ironically stuff that has nothing to do with art.
Taking better care of myself physically, working on myself as a person and my mental health has legit done wonders for restarting my artistic career and I've noticed so much growth in the matter of weeks and months vs years of floundering with different stuff.
Even just a bit of cardio every day gives me enough energy and the clarity of mind to work on art without as much difficulty or getting in my own head.
Also, drawing earlier in the day as opposed to later in the day, before the tolls of daily life get into me (especially when working a 9-5) has REALLY helped too. You're so much clear and less bogged down in the morning when you wake up, if you wake up an hour or two before work.

Congrats on winning this amazing device! ✨
A word of advice about the bluetooth-function: I'd highly recommend you check out which Bluetooth version your PC has because TourBox Controller (The app that basically saves and controls your presets), will only work with 5.0! I struggled with this for a week, needed to contact support and get an adapter, so I'm leaving the information here:
I got the "ASUS USB-BT500 Bluetooth 5.0 USB Dongle Adapter" but the " TP-Link UB500 Nano USB Bluetooth 5.0 Adapter" is supposed to work as well! When you get the stick, you just plug it in, install the driver (very important, otherwise your PC but not TourBox Controller will detect the device), restart your pc and you're good to go!
These adapters aren't very expensive. If you still prefer connecting it via USB-C cable, that works as well (what I did until I figured the Bluetooth thingy out)!
Congratulations again, have lots of fun with this amazing device! :D
If you have any more questions you can contact me via Instagram (@lorare_art) and I'll be glad to help you! :D
Nerding out about tech and talking about art are my main passions in life :b :D ✨

What really makes my life easier is having a plan. Reserved times in my calendar for working on personal stuff, and when to practice. I also keep notes on what i feel i am weak at (shading for example), and i try to gather up videos and articles on it, so i can have a good shading -study session when its time for it in my calendar.
watching a video here and there, doesnt really do much for me, i need a bit more rigidity

Great video. One of the things I've learned as an artist is trying to accept that after finishing a large project, I'll always have a dip in my mood once I finish it. For me, it's just part of the creative process, and trying to force productivity right after completing something doesn't really help me in the long run. Time to rest and relax after flexing creative muscles is very important.

idk if the tourbox elite giveaway is over or not but it would make my life easier. What made it easier for me as an artist was doing I'm unsure what the name of this would be called but I think "8 strikes" is a good term
It's where you draw with your fingers, wrist (don't over do it with the wrist because that's how I got my sprain) elbow then shoulder drawing horizontal, to diagonal to vertical lines. I'll try my best to explain it.
another way of saying it is going up to down, top right to bottom left, right to left, bottom right to top left and repeat it in like you're drawing lines clockwise. That way you can see how your line strokes are going in every direction and practice where needed.
This goes well when blocking out an image during a sketch phase so you can just focus more so on the direction of the general lines then when you need to do the actual line are you get a much clearer direction on where they go.

Hey, im a video editor, so not really an "artist" in the way of drawing, but always love your videos and hearing your thoughts! The turbo looks awesome, Im already thinking about how IO could use it for editing videos! I've spent years trying to make my workflow easier and more enjoyable. I have made some Numbers sheets for planning videos, which has helped, as well as making everything set up to record as easily as possible. I bought a bunch of adaptors to easily move the camera from one tripod to another, and have some shortcuts set up on the stream deck. I really enjoy looking at my process and trying to improve it! Also learning to better write scripts...

What has made my life easier as a digital artist is using file templates. When I load a file in CSP, it's pre-set up with named and organized layers. The structure helps me stay consistent with my process, and also I don't get confused about what layer I am on. They have specific names like BG, Base, Skin, Clothes, etc. instead of Layer 1, Layer 2, Layer 3, etc. I also use auto actions in conjunction with my template when I need to make new layers. It's better because they can be pre-named and colored. Thanks for the giveaway!

Something that was game changing for me is to care less. Perfectionism can be such a cancer on an artist. It paralyzes. When I find myself getting stuck on something, doing it over and over and over and just never getting it to look "right", I say screw it! "Perfection is God's department" not mine!

Proud of you, love your voice, your script writing and the power of your oratory. You should be dynamic and also think about voice acting as AI will eventually make a mess of the true value of digital art. I will love the tour box as a video editor but I think sometimes such promises are about getting numbers on your channel and not always given to any one.

Thank you! Fortunately I can do both! Ai wont be able to replicate my art for awhile…Im keeping tabs on it heheh. The human voice still seems next to impossible for AI to correctly simulate too, its amazing how far behind any ai voice is compared to images or even videos. Its still just machine learning and not sentient yet.

Well, where do we start. I think the number one mindset that let's me practise much more is really to just not care if the outcome will be not up to my standards. It's quite an unhealthy mindset to have and will just make you quit art even faster. What I tell myself instead, is that I need to know +1 thing that I did not yesterday, and do +1 better thing that I did yesterday. If I satisfy those criteria, then I'm good! All I need to do is continue to do what I'm doing and I should get there eventually, on paper at least lol.
Anyway, great stuff as usual, and keep up the great work Josh!

As a person with a muscle disorder I have adapted my work space so it is easier for me to reach things and organize stuff I use more at the top of my storage. For when I am doing digital art and my muscles are not allowing me to do line drawings I work on stippling as my spasms cause that effect anyway. For the days that I am stuck not being able to control my muscles I focus on learning and studying how other artists draw/create art.

I think what helped me is try to not care about the number of likes on social media as that doesn't equate to how good your art is. The algorithm could favor you but 99% doesn't. So just enjoy the process and wait for the opportunity

The process of trying to figure out what to draw can be tiring, and it's easy to get stuck in my head, just thinking, it's kinda like choice paralisis, sometimes you just gotta skip a decision and feel your way through the process.
