- Pianist Ivan Ilić performs Belgian Impressionist composer's Prélude "Nostalgique" at home in France. The piece is the 2nd of 13 Préludes Opus 69, written in 1922.

Really beautifully played. Wonderful composer. I don't think he was really an impressionist although he used impressionist techniques. His music is always highly organized and not usually rhapsodic, and he doesn't use color just for the purpose of being colorful. There's always motive work or development going on. But that's nerdy stuff. The point is that it's gorgeous music which you make very obvious. I'll definitely get your cd. Bravo!

Good observation, Vincent. It may be a kind of hommage. Jongen knew Ravel personally and admired his music (JJ says so in his memoirs). That said, Ravel wasn't the first to use an obsessive bell-like motif throughout a solo piano work like this. But because Jongen's music is harmonically and stylistically close to Ravel's, the connection is a natural one to make.
