- Today, Mrs M and I decided to go up to the Vale of Rheidol Railway to have a ride from Aberystwyth to Devil's Bridge.
We decided to catch the 10.30 service from Aberystwyth, which today was hauled By loco 1213 A.k.a. No 9 Price of Wales, and was full with no spare seats on departure
The weather was wonderful, and this is the first time I've had the opportunity to video from the train, so sit back and enjoy the journey through some stunning scenery up the Rheidol Valley in Mid Wales
we saw No7 in February this year, and today saw the remaining two locos on the VOR Fleet, Nos 8 and 9.
Note that towards the end of the return journey, that a driver hadn't stopped at the Barriers, resulting in him stuck out in front of the oncoming train, and the barrier down on his bonnet.
Lovely video - I did this journey a few years ago and sat on the right of the train on departure from Devil's Bridge....with the privilege of looking down on a red kite swooping above the trees below. Absolutely unforgettable! Cheers, Keith (Brit in Berlin)
Thanks very much Keith, having trouble in getting these replies back to recipients, but the VOR like many of the Great Little Trains of Wales. offers an amazing experience when you travel on them. Each one wonderful in their own way.
Very high quality video. Beautiful scenery, chocolate and cream and apple great. Great little train.
Thank you very much Berwyn, I miss not being to go up there and see them this year. A wonderful Railway, that has never closed.
Excellent Video.I did the evening fish and chip special a couple of years ago on here, beautiful weather..Thanks for posting this Robert...Great memories..!!!
Thanks Martin, it's one of our favourite runs from Carmarthenshire.
Nice one Bob. The VOR was the first narrow gauge railway I ever visited way back in the early 1960s. I hate to say it, but the only reason I went there was so I could underline 822 and 823 in my Ian Allan ABC! Cheers, Dave.
Ha..ha..wrong Railway Dave, 822 and 823 belong on the Welshpool & Llanfair Careinion Railway, the Vale of Rheidol own Nos 7,8 and 9...Regards...Bob
Oops. Senior moment. It was a long time ago! Dave.
I'm a fully paid up member of that Club Dave...Best wishes....Bob
Couldn't have wished for better weather Bob, lovely ride through that wonderful scenery
We got up, saw the forecast was good, and off we went Austin. A wonderful day out and a rare ride on the train for us.
A great video Bob, brought back fond memories. My uncles had farms near Tregaron and Lampeter and I used to travel the line in my younger days. My last journey was in 1967 when the line was still under BR operation and the V of R had it's own station at Aberystwyth. Happy days.
Thanks Derek, it's a wonderful Railway, and it's good that the three locos are now in full working order. I remember my first visit in 1966 and took a photo of a departure from the original station.
Amazing coverage and scenic areas of North Wales :-)
Although most of the Great Little Trains of Wales are in North Wales Rick, the VOR is in Mid Wales...Thanks very much for watching.
Lovely Bob enjoyed the ride. Great weather too. Locos looked wonderful in the sun....not a Manor in sight, just memories! Geraint
Thanks Ger, we saw No7 in February after returning to traffic after 20 years being repaired, then seeing Nos 8 and 9 yesterday completes the se, and it's many years since all three locos have been available together.
Great Video Bob, nice to see the new station and loco shed !
Thanks very much, the new station provides free car parking facilities and is far more convenient for passengers.
Superb video Bob. A brilliant sunny day for a great journey on a steam train. Lovely on board footage. Enjoyable watching. Best wishes C&A
Thanks both, we haven't been on the trains for many years, and it was a real treat, especially on such a beautiful day....Best wishes...Bob
A great day out with steam Bob
It was fabulous Dave, we thoroughly enjoyed it.
That’s a really lovely video of the VoR railway, Bob. The trains and lineside look very well presented and it looks like you had a good day. Keith
Thanks Keith, considering their age, these locos are kept in superb condition. They were in fact the last steam locos to run on BR, and carried the BR Blue livery and double arrow sign at the end....Regards...Bob
A cracking video my Friend....Loved the on-Train footage...Looked like You had a superb Day...Best wishes....Steve.
A last minute decision Steve, and we both had a great time on such a lovely day....Best wishes...Bob
Great sound in the on-train shots. They've certainly done a lot of improvements to the line (although I would rather like to see one of the engines turned out in the lined blue with cast double arrows of later BR days.)
One thing that's slightly disappointing is that in the pursuit of historical accuracy they've taken the nameplates off. Surely Prince of Wales is much more memorable than No. 1213.
Thanks as always, I take your point regarding the BR Blue liver, but in all fairness, they've changed the identities of their locos on a regular basis certainly in recent years, and who knows the last BR steam loco to run on BR metals may return in the not too distant future.
A great ride with you Bob on this lovely railway and on such a nice day too, a bit different to when I videoed it last September in the wet. Well done for grabbing the back end lol. I guess 'Mondeo Man' will be looking for someone else to blame!!!! Regards,Brian.
Thanks Brian, it was a last minute decision to go, and when we got there for the 10.30 departure it was almost full, but on such a great day we thoroughly enjoyed it. Mind you those coaches were lurching from side to side, and it's only the superb stabilising system within the X920 that made it look relatively smooth...Regards,,,,Bob
Sometimes the best way to do it Bob..... just go eh! I hope my X920 does as good a job with my current projects!! Regards, Brian.
It's a superb piece of kit as you know Brian, and I'm sure it will do a great job for you....Regards....Bob
I agree Bob but it's not the kit that's the problem lol. You can start to judge for yourself now ........ Or when you have a 'spare evening'!!!!Cheers, Brian.
@@SYKAROST Absolutely nothing wrong with your Norfolk footage Brian..excellent footage throughout...Regards...Bob
Lovely day for a train ride and a lovely ride it was. Especially when Robert frames his shots with forethought. I'd also guess by the wild motion of the cars on that narrow gauge track, that your camera has excellent image stabilization. Thanks for sharing.
It certainly was, it was very difficult filming from the train, as there was a great deal of movement, and as you've correctly identified, my camera does have an amazing five axis stabilising system. Thanks as always...Bob
Very good video Bob :)
Thanks Simon, once again your kind comments are appreciated.
Hi Bob, Very nice , Great improvement to Station and locos since my last visit ...Dave
