I've lived in Malaysia for over 4 years now and she probably knows more than I do. Yes, Indonesian and Malay are different languages, but share a lot of similarities.

Dont feel bad, because of vernacular education in Malaysia, alot of Malaysians still struggle with speaking Malay because they only learn it to pass exams and do official government stuff, they dont use Malay daily or at all. Furthermore with government push of English education for the last couple of decades, majority of Malays can understand English and speak it sufficiently, or so well that they began mixing up English and Malay words for their daily usage 😂 Especially those from Kuala Lumpur. Also because of that, tourists and expats can comfortably live in Malaysia without learning a lick of Malay, just like u probably. Anyway I say this, Indonesians do whole lot better job at preserving Bahasa Melayu than Malaysians, just like the other commenter says, both language are from the same root, one example of this is the usage of "kalian", Malays know this word but rarely use it outside literature but Indonesians still use this word when talking with each other, I find that really cool. This reminds me when Kobo invited Boboiboy VA to her stream and she fully expected him to know Malay because hes a Malaysian that voiced a character that speaks Malay and then he hit her with "Malay is not my first language, I mainly speak English and Chinese". This pretty much sums up the state of the Malay language in Malaysia😂😂
There was when Ina fell like inside of the buildings, Kaela said another "tumbal" and asking what is tumbal in english. After Zeta/Anya told it is sacrifice in english, Kronii just randomly said "Aku tumbal Ina" in Indonesian lmao
