  • [SPOILERS: The Leftovers]
    If you are a fan of the channel, you’ve probably at one point or another heard me express my love for The Leftovers. For those unfamiliar, The Leftovers tells the story of those left to grapple with the inexplicable disappearance of 2% of the world’s population, an event dubbed The Sudden Departure. There are so many things I could praise The Leftovers for, but today I want to discuss how the series subverts (or perhaps perfects) what is known as “The Mystery Box”.

      Interestingly a compromise between the writers. They didn’t explicitly show it because one writer (I believe the author of the novel) didn’t want an explicit depiction of the departed and their world. So it is written so that it is likely a lie.

    Finally! Someone gets it!
    It's perplexing why there is so little discussion online about this series, but given that I waited for it to premiere, conclude, and then wait until a few months ago to watch it myself, I think I understand why.
    As I watched it for the first time, I read through the episode discussion threads on Reddit that were written as the show was airing because so many people essentially dropped the series midway through the first season, and the first character-centric episode with Matt was the episode that gripped those who stayed.
    I think about this show all the time, which is difficult given the vast amount of ephemeral media produced.

    the leftovers is one of my favorite shows. love seasons 2 and 3 but i feel like i’m the only person who actually prefers the first season to the rest, tone-wise. i also think it was an absolute travesty that they changed the opening credits theme/intro for the last two seasons it was so good season 1.

      While I loved season 1's opening theme and felt the same as you originally when it was changed at the beginning of season 2, I quickly realized the error in my thinking and came to like the second opening even more. I think it was just the fact it was a more upbeat song, while still having a ton of emotion to it, and the more surreal nature of it as a whole just served the show better, as it provided a brief counterpoint to to it's otherwise bleak & serious tone

    I was clinically depressed when S01 of The Leftovers came out. Some critics complained that the show was overly dark, but I found it validating to see other people suffering, and that recognized as natural and okay. It actually made me feel better about being in such a dark place.
    The second season almost lost me. It felt all over the place. But then the third season ties it all together in a profound way. It made the journey with all these characters worthwhile. I've rewatched the series several times and it's still one of my all time favourites.

      I also like the darkness and the philosophical nature of True Detective season 1. It relaxes me knowing my life isn't as depressing as so many. I don't mean that in a bad way. I just mean it reminds me to be thankful for where I'm at because life could suck so much more.

    • @christophernash8166
      @christophernash8166 2 года назад +3

      The Leftovers helped me understand the true understanding of how people go through such deep depression even if their lives look great on the outside. I mean, Liv Tyler's character had it made in so many ways, but her depression and suicidal thoughts were understandable.
      So many of us want more in life and are jealous of those with more, but so many born into wealthy families and communities have a lot of pressure on them leading to suicidal thoughts. I've not been there in that context, but I know of some. The Leftovers just shows we are all human and that all classes of people and even people with less trauma than others can feel the darkness of wanting to give up and die. This feeling isn't just a problem for certain people. We can argue how some can toughen up, but this show is about that wounded child inside all of us. Where our faith in life and joy and love has been torn apart.
      When I tell people to watch this show, I tell them you are going to feel the deepness of crying like you did when you saw Simba see Mufasa die.

    The Leftovers is a very great show and unfortunately overlooked. I saw it when it came out. And what hooked me was Lindelof promise during the time the mystery will never be explained. • @MollyMattaini

    I slightly disagree with you about the point of Nora's story. To me it's not about Nora finding peace to forgive herself but about Kevin believing her despite the lack of evidence. I always found that scene to be about how belief is built on love and its necessity in the face of immense and unexplainable suffering. It's her reaction to Kevin's belief that is the high point in the scene for me, and it really beautifully concludes this whole show about the nature of belief.
    I heard somewhere that the writers once said that when they wrote they imagined that monologue one way (as a truth or lie) but then when they saw Coon perform it they thought she read it the opposite way of how they wrote it. Which I think is brilliant because it means in a way there actually isn't a right answer at all because of the layers of artistic interpretation.

    I would say Twin Peaks (Which JJ Abrams has said inspired Lost) also does the "Mystery Box" type of story right. In the first season, it's not about who killed Laura, it's about how her death affects the people of Twin Peaks, hence the show's name.
    But wasn't the killer eventually revealed? Yes. But David Lynch always intended to never reveal the killer, he only did so due to executive pressure and disagreements with his co-writer, Mark Frost. The killer being revealed made season 2 pretty weak after episodes 9, until the last two episodes, but thankfully The Return made sure to tie it up in an odd bow.

    • @tjenadonn6158
      @tjenadonn6158 2 года назад +5

      Lynch in general does Mystery Box to perfection. Arguably the central questions of Mulholland Drive (What is Rita's true identity?) Lost Highway (Who is Dick Laurent? Who is The Mystery Man? Who killed Renee?) and even his most straightforward crime movie Blue Velvet (Whose ear was that and how did it wind up in that vacant lot?) and their answers are the least important elements of those films. They're almost non-physical McGuffins: the material of them doesn't matter, what matters is the spaces Lynch uses the journey to answer those questions to explore. Unless you're writing an Agatha Christie-style whodunnit the answer to the mystery is the least important part of any story built around a mystery.

    Great video! I agree with everything you said re:Nora. My only disagreement is your discussion around LOST. I don’t think LOST really was the inverse, I think it was exactly the same, but the leftovers was able to nail it much better because of a level of creative control that wasn’t possible for LOST. I think from the writer’s perspective the idea was the same. I also think that you’ll find that audience has a lot to do with it. I have recommended the leftovers to many people who didn’t like lost. I said, “it’s different, it’s better” and they almost always tell me it’s doing the same mystery box thing lost did and they don’t enjoy it. Show the leftovers to as many millions as LOST, and I think you get a similar response.

Season six could have been written better, but the writer's intentions of what they wanted the show to be about is there and is great.

Like u mentioned, it came to a point in s03 where the explanation of the departures is not even a topic. It is because the show is LITERALLY called “The Leftovers”. It’s about THEM. How they deal with that loss. The ending was quiet ambiguous which pissed off a few people but i guess that is what makes it GREAT. The Leftovers is about THE LEFTOVERS. Not “the departed”.

    Great video, Mac! The Mystery Box and its bad utilization is unfortunately becoming more common and made me burned out on mysteries for a while. Still, it's interesting to see what it is and how this show I should probably watch does it well.
    It's also a bit ironic that the man that coined the term "Mystery Box" is the one responsible for popularizing its bad utilization.

      Literally lol I don’t mind a story that is openly about that. Like I like Agatha Christie novels even though they aren’t ones I can really re read but they know what they are. With JJ it’s all just popcorn fare which is fine I guess but when it becomes oversaturated like you said it burns me out.

    I feel like before watching this show, its good for people to read the episode description of the very final episode: "nothing is explained". Then you can decide whether you think it's worth watchin or not. I accidentally did this halfway through season 1, but i liked the characters enough that the mystery wasn't too important for me.

    Leftovers is one of my favorite shows! Also, I totally agree the story Nora told was a lie, a "story we tell ourselves" because it sounds better than the truth and was easier to believe than the shame of wussing out and going into hiding for 20 years There were so many thematic examples of this idea earlier in the episode, such as with the nun and with the goat. Also I think it was kinda of a test for Kevin, it didn't matter if he really believed it, she was testing him to see if he would just accept it to help her move on from her past and start a new future with him. Not to mention all the logical inconsistencies you could really nitpick with the actual details of her story if you really think about it. Anyway, would look forward to a video on this from you. Thanks for all your great content!

    When I watched "The Leftovers" I was convinced that Lindelof was a good choice for the HBO Watchmen show. It's a shame he kinda dropped the ball on that project.

    • @highwind1991
      @highwind1991 2 года назад

      I wouldn't say he dropped the ball over all because I think that every episode up until the finale is great. I was about ready to call that season of Watchmen A+ quality television and then the finale kind of brought it down to a B+ :(

    • @BruceWayne-wh4of
      @BruceWayne-wh4of 2 года назад

      @@highwind1991 It had it's moments for sure, but I think Lindelof got ahead of himself and introduced too many characters and subplots without actually delivering a satisfying pay-off to most of them. I could see the ambition, but that's just not enough for me to call it a worthy successor to such a well-rounded work as the original Watchmen graphic novel. But yes, if at least the finale would've been really good, I probably wouldn't view the show as such a massive disappointment.

    I know I'm preaching to the choir but it is so funny how JJ, the guy who coined the whole Mystery Box thing, has constantly failed to deliver on it. They admitted that Lost just used the mysteries to keep the audience going, they didn't decide it was gonna be Khan until late in development, and I don't even need to talk about his work on Star Wars.

    Ah I hadn't thought about this show in a while and now you made me miss it!
    Let me just take a moment to defend my absolute favorite series tho:
    To me LOST was never about solving mysteries. If you want that watch CSI instead.
    I love LOST because of the characters and how the flashbacks develop the characters into who they are today. No character is flawless and even the ones that seem bad have some reason why they are the way they are.
    I also love the mystery itself, not because it needs a resolution, but because it's so exciting that there's this place that you don't understand, that's unexplored and that holds things you can't expect. I like the sense of mystery and wonder.
    And that takes me to the Island. It's both scary and holy. The whole time you don't know how to feel about the place. Part of me wants to be there and explore it, part of me would be terrified of being there. It just makes the place so interesting. It's wild, mystical and technological all at the same time.
    I love LOST for the ambience. I just like the feeling of the Island, the sense of mystic and mystery. To be focused on logical resolutions is to miss the point, in my opinion.
    I understand the leftovers made a better job at not setting up the expectation for a resolution, but personally I never watched LOST with the intent of getting answers. It really is the mystical ambience, the aura of the Island.

    the answers to the questions proposed in the leftovers are conclusively given before the questions are asked, it just takes the second or third watch as well as an exploration into the viewer's individual pain and confusion before this is understood. i don't think anyone has a healthy relationship with their pain, and only because of that are rewatches necessary to understand the intention behind the story. it takes understanding what people will convince themselves of in an attempt to run away from pain and how confusion and chaos motivates the escape from inescapable pain, as well as how it effects everything around them. i think the point is to only make one question inconclusive (as well as the leading questions, although they don't much matter)- 2% of the population just up and vanished? (where did they go, who is responsible, what force of nature exists that would cause it, etc). the result of that question brings up questions that are grounded in the real human experience; the predominant one being that of understanding pain as it relates to the human experience. everyone was in pain and confused before the departure, but the relationship with pain and confusion was only brought closer to the light because every single person on the planet experienced the same pain at the same time where still they were motivated by, and often forced into feeling (eg having to answer dehumanizing question for their departure benefits check) their individual pain because of the confusion that the departure wrought and not by understanding the event, themselves, or each other throughout the entirety of the series. that pain existed outside the main question and not as a result of it. the entire story wouldn't have been significant if there were more magical/science fiction truths that contradict reality aside from the departure itself and as a result, the answer to every question is observable but the original by means of bringing up the viewer's own questions about the human disposition. after all, isn't the only painfully unanswerable question we all have the "deal with" where do people go when we're not here- when we die, essentially? and hasn't the pain of that looming question hindered our ability to live and answer all the questions relating to the nature of reality in some respect or another without making untrue/unfounded claims like god? perhaps it's the questions we can't think to ask about our own lives that leave us questioning something like the leftovers.

    I think a good example of "the mystery box" would be The New Batman Adventures a.k.a. the fourth season Batman The Animated Series where it sets up the mystery as to why Bruce Wayne/Batman had a falling out with his former apprentice: Dick Grayson/OG Robin, now going by Nightwing. Every time Dick shows up, he's always throwing shade at Batman and it makes you wonder how bad the fight between the two was and it's paid off in a satisfying way in the episode Old Wounds where Dick tells Tim Drake/The New Robin about the last night he was Robin.

    2:28 - these kinds of reveals piss me off so much; where the reveal only makes sense of you have a pre-existing investment in the IP. This version of Kirk and Spock have never heard of Khan, so that fact that Baconjoin Cabbagepatch reveals himself as such means nothing to them. It’s only there for the audience.
    Same deal with the Blofeld reveal in Spectre; it may make viewers go gasp, but to the characters within the film, that reveal shouldn’t mean anything.

    • @MacabreStorytelling
      @MacabreStorytelling  2 года назад

      Exactly. Especially if you are a viewer who is not familiar with the previous films. If you don't know the significance of Khan, when he says it, which is followed by that silly little space for audience gasping, you will literally have no idea wtf is going on.

    • @justinalbin7272
      @justinalbin7272 2 года назад +1

      And the vast majority of people familiar with the IP knew he was Khan before the film debuted, making the reveal impactful to only a very tiny percentage of your audience.

    2. I get what you're saying about the difference to LOST, and can concede some of your points about the mystery taking on heightened import. Well technically the point of the briefcase was meant to be sort of the “MacGuffin” of the story in Pulp Fiction. It was meant to be something that serves no purpose at all other than to move things along.
    I would actually like to see a video on helping people understand, what that term means because it it gets on my nerves that people even today keep confusing what Macguffins are. Interesting though how you mentioned JJ Abrams, who also did Mission Impossible 3, and even he got the MacGuffin (The rabbits foot) down correctly (For once surprisingly….).

    Can someone explain to me why this show is so gripping? I want to watch it because of what the audience says but it also doesn't have a premise that hooks me and the fact that what's going on isn't actually explained leaves me confounded. It's the same reason I never got into 'Lost'. Please tell me what makes it so good/why you connect with it because I want to get it, but I don't want this to be a show that I have to slog through one season to get a payoff the next. Thanks guys!!
    Edit:Just finished the video and it still sounds unappealing as it just seems like a giant exercise for JJ Abrams to practice his mystery box theory.

    Please do make a video about why you think Nora was lying! FWIW, I myself think that it was deliberately, perfectly ambiguous: you can read it either way, and we'll never know: and we need to come to accept that, just as Kevin ultimately accepts her absence since she is, in the end, there; as everyone in the story has to accept that the departures are ultimately unexplained (true even if Nora's telling the truth, as we don't know *why* this happened). I think the ambiguity is the point, and the glory, of the ending. But I'd love to hear your argument. I hope you do it.
