Sort of the same reason why Pat chose Roy over Frank in eastenders. In essence, they realised that whilst men like Frank or Mike were more exciting and there was more passion, the cost/ downside was that they were still unreliable and untrustworthy and made bad long-term partners They couldn't provide the stability and long-term security that the more boring men provided. I recall a scene in the 2000s where deirdre addressed this to Mike, and she stated just that. Basically, she said something like she knew he'd get bored after a while when we had her and would stray or lose interest.
@annoldham3018 Yes, but Ken was the same. He had no passion or deep love for deirdre but put up with her. Ken would have loved a woman like Martha on the boat as she had class and sophistication he craved that deirdre never had. And deirdre loved rogue bad boys like Ray Langton and Mike but as I said she realised they couldn't provide her with stability. They were mismatched but yet compatible and were there for each other but their relationship was far from romeo and juilet . But if somebody better came along, they'd happily have the affair.
@boltonpete6093 what's funny is that deirdre was written as a femme fatale who was irresistible to men. They did the same with Tanya in eastenders. Having men fighting over them like they were sharon stone 🙄 and then attractive women like Maria and Tina were always presented as desperate and needy women men didn't want 😂

Anne Kirkbride's reaction here was Oscar worthy and very genuine, she seemed genuinely devastated by his illness. Outstanding performance.
Oscars are for film performances, BAFTAs for TV.
