as someone who used to be an associate at walmart, i never made customers wait more than a few minutes for me to get there. i would always drop what i was doing and help them as soon as possible. I'd regularly provide information such as "this item will be left at customer service, and all you have to do is ask the associate/cashier at checkout to get it from customer service for you. that way you can finish shopping." I despised how my fellow associates would regularly make customers wait much too long, so most often, i had the keys for my own service area (sporting goods/hardware) and HBA. The one I work at has a homeless issue and there's a drug rehab facility next to it so stealing and violence is a big issue at the store. In colorado, you can steal up to 1k before you get arrested. So to ensure they don't lose money, us guards walk around and check the cases and they lock high profit items like cosmetics and eletronics. Even toys are locked. You're lucky to walk in, get everything you want/need WITHOUT needing something unlocked. Heck, even most of the food has shelving eith alarm systems in it so when you leave it open too long, a siren goes off on it. Awkward for those who likes to stock pile and such..

In San Francisco, a bunch of Walgreens had to shut down because of the law that was passed that's basically the same thing OP is talking about. Walgreens Is also a multi billion dollar chain, but that doesn't matter when an individual Walgreens store isn't turning a profit. It's understandable for stores of any sort to do this because they don't want to shut down. Not only does it hurt the owner, and the employees, it hurts just normal people who have to travel further just to get groceries. My Walmart is just one of two stores out in my town, but the other store is strictly grocery. If I needed to shop at Walmart, and my Walmart closed down? Target price matches with a LOT of stores. All you have to do is show the cashier Walmarts price on your phone and they do it right there. It's a piece of cake. Sometimes targets website price is less than in store and they do that too. I figured it out because I needed special batteries so I looked online to make sure the store has them in stock. The batteries were 5.99 online and 18.00 in store. I said something and they opened a huge binder full of the stores they will price match with. It has saved me hundreds at this point.

Different walmarts have different items locked up depending on what gets stolen the most in that area. Ive even seen ethnic hair care locked behind glass doors in certain walmart stores and even pads and tampons in others. While they have no value until purchased, locking these up is done for good reason. A thief doesn't need to steal the actual card to steal the money that may be on a card. All that's needed is the number on the back of the card (not even the scratch off portion). With that number, they can check online to see if money has been added to a card and once it has, they can redeem it, resulting in the intended recipient getting nothing. There have been warnings about this type of theft for well over 10 years now. In this case, thieves aren't really stealing from the store, they're stealing from the purchaser.

My Walmart never locks things up. I’ve noticed it’s only the ghetto ones in my area that locks things like that up

I can’t speak the same for mine. I live in a nice neighborhood but they still lock some stuff up because teens like to go steal stuff and homeless people lurk around. 😮‍💨

This doesn't really happen. I can see if it's a $20 item but the real reason they lock it up is to limit the amount people can take at one time. If it were unlocked then the whole row can be removed and shoved into a backpack. $15 dollar rule. If the total amount they was is below $15 give it to the customer. Above that amount, walk it to a register.

As someone who works at Walmart trust me we hate it just as much. Most times it’s only certain associates and managers who have a key and we can never find them.

I remember asking a employee to get around $800 worth of tools out of a locked shelf and after that I walk around the shop with them for about half of hour trying to find other stuff

Well when you need a locked item, get everything else first and then go get an associate

As a previous associate, we do not care what you are buying, all we care about is making sure it is payed for

When people steal things too often, this is what happens.
