  • An ubiquitous tool in Japan--the cutter knife. This has been the standard type of cutter found and used in Japan for many decades. Unlike the standard Western utility blade, when the cutting edge dulls, you don't have to reload the knife with a new blade, you simply snap off a segment to give you a brand new cutting edge.
Featured here are some snap-off type utility/box cutters that are all made in Japan.
I believe the most famous company in this business is Olfa, followed by NT Cutter, both specialists in this segment and both located in Osaka, Japan. KDS is a lesser known Japanese brand, but they also make decent general purpose cutters.
Take a look at what each of these manufacturers have to offer. You might be amazed at the variety of models they offer!

Olfa is a great brand. I love a good knife, but I've been afraid of doing permanent damage to the blade. So therefore I've carried disposable blade utility knives for years. I've been carrying an olfa 34b for awhile now. The blade on it is marketed as disposable, but its hefty enough to be resharpened. The blade is a single bevel edge, so it's similar to sharpening a chisel. It fits nicely right into the leg pouch of cargo pants.

I like the looks of the Olfa 34b. ...classic modern.
With the single bevel, I'd imagine it could be used for wood-working too.

They also have a smaller model (26b) that uses sk5 carbon tool steel. The blade on it is better than the stainless 34b, but I've had experience from carrying a master Barlow from the 60's and some old vintage old timer knives. I love carbon steel over stainless in a knife, but that hassle of every 3 days having to oil them to keep the blade from rusting got old quick. It may sound kinda lazy, but I just love the forgiveness of stainless steel, even if it doesn't have a good of edge as carbon.
Yeah its actually the first single beveled blade I've ever owned. I did see a single beveled hatchet once used by my great uncle years ago.

yodobashi camera osaka Umeda has some good prices for OLFA items. I found the Olfa belt holder blade snap box there. Nice thing is you can reuse it because it allows you to dump the broken blades in your scrap metal pile.

Now I know why lots of people worshipping 553, even though it's a plastic. The mechanism is solid, and the blade has almost zero wobble.

I reckon that Olfa is probably the most famous brand out there for that sort of stuff.

Looking a pictures, I'd imagine the end cap comes off to facilitate blade exchanges.

@@chriscas-ToolAficionado Thanks for replying. Yes, the end cap does come off, but with great difficulty and at the risk of breaking the pocket clip. One has to lift up the pocket clip to relieve pressure on the little plastic nipple that holds the end cap in place and then pull the end cap. It's a bad design because one is putting tension on the plastic pocket clip which will eventually snap off.
