imo, it's not cheating unless there is a rule/unspoken rule about the given issue. The keyboard thing wasn't an issue until it was, so it really wasn't cheating until it became a debate. Plus, with Wirtual being honest about the keyboard and how it works shows that there was no intent to cheat, only an accident if anything. If this can be considered accidental cheating, then it's probably the only case I've seen personally.
"Technically correct" is such a convenient line that FEELS objective but often isn't. There's such a thing as spirit of the law. That said, hiding behind technical "there's a rule" evades accountability from at times unjust laws and systems.

I think a better response from Nadeo would've been to unlock the potentioal of the action keys and allow players to define action keys at any percentage they wanted. Then this technique is open to all, there's no cost barrier to entry and gamepad players can use it too. It might give a slight advantage back to gamepad players since they would have both action keys AND analog input, but it seems like the fairest way to do it, and it means you don't have to deal with the effort and drama of enforcing a new rule.
The problem is that then you would need to check for every turn and every map to search for the best %. It would turn into a macro optimization game instead of a racing game.

Random idea: airplanes use what is called trim to adjust the pilots controls, especially in an environment where some ‘basic’ input is constantly needed. Similar idea could be implemented for action-keys: while holding a steer with action key (50% left for example), why not allow trim-keys to alter the limit by adjustments of 2%? That would require three extra keys: trim-up, trim-down and trim-reset. This would allow similar accuracy as controller has, but require that the player actually constantly adjusts the trim, to achieve that accuracy. The system would only be useful where tapping is especially inconsistent, or a small but smooth input is needed.
I remember my grandad telling me stories of wirtualTM's live bobsled win as a boy. I can't believe modern technology has allowed this masterpiece to reach me all these years later.
I was wondering why couldn't they make steering % customizable for action keys so that everyone has access to it. Going for records requires optimization, and it should be expected that some advanced techniques are required to get the edge over others.
They easily could do this in the game's own key binding menu, but that would remove any advantage of playing with controllers. I all seriousness though, yeah, I don't think hunting maps should require fine-tuning your keybindings for every map. But the fact remains that a controller can steer at 34 % while a keyboard can't, and in a world where 0.001 seconds makes the difference between records, that's objectively an advantage that some people will have over others because they went out and bought extra equipment, even though that same argument was what got custom analoge hotkeys banned. I don't think the accusation of cheating holds any water when controller players could be accused of cheating by the same token.
One difference is that controllers are cheap, while analogue keyboars are $150+. Another difference is that you need skill to steer consistently on a controller, while wirtual used a macro, that automatically steered at 34%. The problem are not the keyboards or controllers, but the macros. I know you can also steer consistently on controllers by modifying them with notches, but that is theoretically cheating as well.
Its not cheating *at the time* because there was no definitive statement about it from Nadeo. Honestly though, even with the rules changed, people could still do this on controller, so it was just punishment either way to keyboard players. I switched to controller, took me about a week to get used to and I immediately jumped down to 3rd in the world within 2 hours of playing the map. They basically do that by allowing analog inputs. Since PCs can have whatever input device you like, and the game supports analog inputs, there's no way to stop people from doing with physical tools exactly what Wirtual did with digital tools. Imagine a steering wheel with a rod you could slide into place to limit maximum steering angle.
because then it would kill all the skill of this game, if you could just find the exact steering % for half the tricks that require precision and skill then whats the point anymore

Honest question: is this keyboard doing something that you couldn't just do with an Auto Hot Key script? The thing I've been trying to wrap my head around with the change that Nadeo made was that they dropped the skill ceiling instead of bringing the opportunity to everyone to be that good, why not just allow the base game to have custom action keys? Or is there something else here that I'm missing?
yeah it seems weird that they wouldnt allow custom action keys, or even keys in 5% increments. Full custom could be deemed unfair to controller players.
@@thrls so then let players set it to whatever they want? I don't see how making an entire surface feel awful to drive on is better than letting everyone have access to tools that expand their options.

A new rule called rule 34% is being popularized in the trackmania community hoping to ban the use of analog keyboard exploitation for more info look up trackmania rule 34.
The analogue keyboard ban seems a little odd to me. Controllers are allowed - ie analogue controls. It's very easy to add curves to reduce sensitivity for them just like the keyboard curves used. But even more important, joysticks can be used. You can have incredible delicacy for a joystick, mine can move nearly a foot in each direction, adjustable down to a few inches. That sort of range allows far more delicacy than anything an analogue keyboard allows, yet is still competition viable. Presumably wheels are also allowed with likely still more range.
I don't think it should be banned from use. Its a pretty cool peace of tech and a lot of esports don't care if your setup is $5000 or $500. the top players in anything are gonna have the best gear regardless. Also this was a nail-biting video dude so many scary finishes lol.
Agreed. Seems backwards to ban the next iteration of keyboards. If using a more optimal input device is cheating then using a controller shouldn't be legal either
@@Litruv the software for the record is stored on the keyboard itself and edited through a website i think expanding custom action keys would have been a way cooler way to equalise it rather than banning nonlinear analog input (ex. dxtweak) i cant wait for controller notches to crop up lol
This is 100% valid, you didn’t break any rules. Even Nadeo has said so. You never hid the fact that you had action keys between the default action keys, and it wasn’t against the rules when this map was played. You’re not a cheater.
Because of Wirtual using software to cap his key presses at 34% steering, Nadeo actually added a rule that using such software is considered cheating. Search "Nadeo Rule 34" for more info.
No, it's completely different from slowing down the game because if you look really closely, you'll notice that he's not slowing down the game. The reason software action keys are banned is because they shift the focus away from consistent keyboard driving or precise controller driving in exchange for just having the right equipment. Sure, it's easy to see how that's a bad thing in hindsight, but it's not at all comparable to literally changing the way the game runs.
I'm not trying to argue that it is possible on a standard keyboard, I know it's not. What I'm moreso trying to argue here is not that custom action keys are fair but rather that they're not comparable to straight up slowing the game down. Yes, it is an unfair advantage to use custom action keys, but at least you're still viewing the game in the same way. Slowing a game down, as you would for a TAS, completely changes how you respond to the game's visual feedback. Just because both require modifications doesn't mean they're automatically the same.
As an outsider, I think blaming a form of analog input and banning it while keeping others legal in the game is an incredibly stupid concept. Either ban all analog inputs or keep all of them legal. You want to do better bobsleighs? Use a controller, a steering wheel, hell get a cheap steering wheel with pedals and use only the pedals to steer left and right. Capping other people who have more money than you just because you are poor is very very stupid. So what if analog keyboards would become meta? Lots of games have a high cost of entry and that doesn't break the game.

22:45 An example of the rare alphabetical priority elimination. Galeniium and Whiten have the same time but Whiten is eliminated because W comes after G alphabetically lol
also at 23:37 the channel outro music plays when Elconn gets knocked out. hilarious timing
That was added in post. They remove copyrighted songs when they post the vods. Notice how the only sounds you can hear are from when wirtual is speaking and even then his voice is distorted.
22:42 the fact they had the exact same time at the cutoff is really impressive
GALENIIUM's faster internet saved him
@@mohidtahir5340 its actually Whiten's name that killed him. In TM ties are decided alphabetically.
@@trilliongold Damn, that's equally unfair. TM should add a feature where they break tie with stone, paper, scissors.

Wirtual ACTUALLY trolling those early knockouts.
Congrats on the win!
Wirtual you stopped smelling of macaroni and now you smell of peanut butter.
I remember this COTD, outside of some 1st of Month troll maps, I did very well on this one, div 3 if I remember correctly. Not many people knew about the AK bobsleigh turns I guess
Hey Elensar, just wanted to say, I noticed what you did when Wirtual was playing bad music on the stream, and I thought your solution was well done.
Yo that's me in the chat at 17:50. Never thought my first div 1 would be bobsled lol. I'm usually a dirt / grass guy.
Honest question - why wouldnt they just unlock the action keys in game to be set at whatever value?
They basically do that by allowing analog inputs. Since PCs can have whatever input device you like, and the game supports analog inputs, there's no way to stop people from doing with physical tools exactly what Wirtual did with digital tools.
Imagine a steering wheel with a rod you could slide into place to limit maximum steering angle.
Gamepad disadvantage I guess?
Because people cried.
because then it would kill all the skill of this game, if you could just find the exact steering % for half the tricks that require precision and skill then whats the point anymore
@@Trep3 The fun, I think, is in figuring it out, not the actual execution.

Action keys were 20-40-60-80
Optimal was exactly 34, which could only be achieved with scripts like Wirtual used here
yeah it seems weird that they wouldnt allow custom action keys, or even keys in 5% increments. Full custom could be deemed unfair to controller players.
@@thrls so then let players set it to whatever they want? I don't see how making an entire surface feel awful to drive on is better than letting everyone have access to tools that expand their options.
@@MudakTheMultiplier but then it's not about being consistent with what you have anymore but rather find the best percentage of actionkeys in a cotd like this.
@@linsetv but controller players can already do that so why kneecap the keyboard players?
Elconn livin rent free in wirtuals mind
this map makes me really really miss old ice
I still love how on your map that you made that everyone, save for the 4 in your vid that beat your times, said was impossible could not beat even your none analog time. and only one beat your anlong time if I remember right. and the part that makes it even better is so many of them tried to do it with an analog keyboard and couldn't beat either of your times. the hole debate just proves people don't know how to cope with not being good enough since you beat all but a handful with just action keys.
A new rule called rule 34% is being popularized in the trackmania community hoping to ban the use of analog keyboard exploitation for more info look up trackmania rule 34.
Can't help but think IF I did look that up, I'd find some really weird stuff, good troll though 😅

Gotta love the flatmate doing fingerboarding in the background, get those sausages strong mate !
If using a more optimal input device is cheating then using a controller shouldn't be legal either
he can still use the keyboard, which lets you do partial keypresses, just can't use software to hit specific values
@@dogtato man, that's just a case of where's the software stored at this point. We'll come up with keyboards with dials soon enough.
The way he had it set up was basically an out of game macro. That's always a no no if it gives you an advantage.
@@Litruv the software for the record is stored on the keyboard itself and edited through a website
i think expanding custom action keys would have been a way cooler way to equalise it rather than banning nonlinear analog input (ex. dxtweak)
i cant wait for controller notches to crop up lol
*i think* I remember watching you change your keyboard acting key settings when you were live. bobsleigh is my favorite style too GGs in the chat
I see what you did there.

"I didn't say he would fail"
2 seconds earlier: "knock him out knock him out!"
He's literally using software to do something that's humanly impossible. That's no different than slowing down game.
34% steering is literally not possible on keyboard but possible on controller, what are you smoking
