28:25 .... build up speed, 40 - 50 mph should do it, as you approach that corner simply lock the back brake, get the rear wheel sliding and back the beast in sideways .. then just power out the other side ................. In my dreams thats how I'd do ..... In reality I'd do it the same way you did .. or panic and drop the bike 😂🤣 Cracking work on conquering your fears, Sir 👍
When you land a plane in one piece it is a good landing, so on that basis You are Winner, congrats! Only trouble is I have not done it yet so I'm wetting myself just thinking about it!!!
Cheers pal 👍 It's not for the faint-hearted. If you're going to ride it, do it from the Ambleside end. Head for Little Langdale and ride the Rynose pass first, then do the Hardknott
Go when it's quiet for less oncoming traffic, less chance of getting caught out on a tight hairpin etc. Enjoy, I usually do this route each year and love it.
Well done my son! That terrifying switch back on the way down! I did exactly what you did. Momentary over think-there’s no margin for error-then got the bike stopped-not necessarily a good thing-then ease it round on the brake til it’s pointing in the right direction and away! Good for you. Pleased I did it but no interest in going back 😅
Paul - really enjoyed watching this, you did it I’m just starting out first year riding on cbt 125 cc got me theory in 8 days then some big bike training hopefully got full licence this year think I am going to get Suzuki 650sv but in next five year want to get up to adventure bike riding uk and Europe I’m 43 not sure if left it all but late but did it going for it :) think it it’s important to push self a little every now and then
Cheers, pal, I was late 30's early 40's when I started. It's never too late. Congratulations on getting the cat and good luck with your new adventure. Thanks for watching, pal 👍
Well done…..I am returning to riding after 42 years….so a tad rusty, I am taking it easy, but know I have lots to re learn….got a fair few twisty roads in Jersey….biggest issue, so so many cars to watch out for….I ride a 2023 Honda NC750DCT…..bit tricky to start with, no clutch, so it’s all throttle and brakes…..gentle gentle….squeeze slowly in and out, I keep reminding myself…..super video, you did really well, I can feel your pride and guts to do this….
Well done Paul, I remember watching last time much more confident, I did it a few years back with a pillion and full luggage on a 330Kg cruiser. Not the road you want to do regularly. Ride safe and keep the shiny side up.
Good to see you tackle your nemesis, never mind how difficult the road, you have to get over your fear first. ive done this in a car and on an xv950 both times in the opposite direction, i got stopped on that exact bend as 2 cars coming down didnt stop to let me get round the bend, i was fully loaded after spending a few days in Scotland and when i got going lifted the front wheel up heading for the grass, had to lean it to the right to get it down and heading in the right direction. It was cold and wet which didn't help, but i know ive got to go back.
I'd have been terrified in the wet. I'm glad you got through safely. The cameras don't show how bad the camber is. It's a real hard road yo do. Thanks for watching 👍
My mate and myself did the hardknott pass on Monday and Tuesday and stayed at the pub you pulled into. I ride an RT and my mate rides a Pan European. We went in the opposite direction and I can tell you that I nearly came a cropper on that infamous bend, I stalled the bike and nearly dropped it. How I managed to save I don't know but it did shake me up. So you're not alone
Did both of these in June 1977 staying just off the junction of these passes. We rode Hard Knott on nightly return beer collecting runs from Eskdale. Sheep sleep on warm roads at night. Much fun with a Honda CD175 and its 6V headlamp.
Well done Paul. Over the bank holiday weekend, I did 6 passes over 2 days. Kirkstone, Honnister, Newlands and Whinlatter. Stayed overnight in Cockermouth, before completing Hardnott and finally Wrynose Pass. It’s amazing how the footage doesn’t show how steep the passes are. Managed to do all without having to put my foot down. Needed a few days to recover. Keep the great videos coming.
@@paulgriffiths6404. After watching your video on Scotland, it has given me a reason to do the Nc500 this year. Hopefully it will be a father and son journey. Look forward to more videos.
Always enjoy a Hardknott Pass video. Good work, and doing it in the middle of the day on a sunny bank holiday. When I did it, I did it early in the morning so there was less traffic, but it was raining. Also struggled with that bend on the downhill, nearly got it round, but not quite.
Well done Paul, I can fully understand your concerns riding that road. Where you walked the bike round the bend we were coming in the opposite direction a few years back one of our guys ended up rolling down that embankment bike n all.
Great to see that road again, I've done it from both directions and the camera doesn't do it justice There are two really good national trust campsites either side both with with great pubs within walking distance Ravenglass is always worth a visit too Good to see you out and about pal Stu
Hi Paul, thx for the nice video, verry nice trip! In what mode did you drive, I have my NT1100 DCT for about 2 months and still searching for witch mode is best for me. I used to drive my Honda ST1100 daily for years and it was a fantastic bike. Bought the DCT because of arthtritis problems in my hands and i am still figuring out the dct gearbox and the driving modes. Stay well and greetings from Belgium.
Hi Pal, thanks for watching 👍 I leave it in Sports 1. It great for me. Sports 1 handled this pass quite well. Never use it in just Drive. Changes gear too quickly and can catch you out.
Well done for highlighting that we all have a crisis of confidence at some time in our riding career. I've just traded down in power and weight so that I can build that confidence again. You definitely chose one of the best days this year for it.
Well done Paul, it's the mental blocks that are harder to overcome. If it's a lack of skill you can train and practice but there is no training course for the mind so once the confidence is shaken it's tough to overcome. Anyone who jibes should go and do it because I did it last year and the camera does not show anything of what it is really like and the road surface is unbelievable bad. Congratulations on tackling your Nemesis, you'll fly round it next time.
An interesting video of a good quality. WELL DONE PAUL. I did Hardknott many years ago in a small car in good weather. I would not like to do it in high winds or heavy rain with mist or fog around. Lots of on coming traffic also makes it far, far more dangerous. If your a car or van driver, don't do it if your rubbish at reversing as this requirement, being good at reversing could be a must on that single track road with such dangerous drops. A good pulling engine is also required along with good tyres. A car tip. Always have someone with you sitting in the left seat. They should say car, bike or van etc. not shout it if one's spotted when approaching right hand bends as a warning. This gives the driver an approx 2 sec. earlier warning to react.
Well done Paul 👍 I was up there last bank holiday Sunday with the wife and chicken'd out lol I've done tan hill and applecross with the wife on the back fine, but I think I will have to do hardknott on my own .
Yeah, Tan Hill is a great road. Applecross is also amazing and a great road to ride. I've done Applecross loads of times both ways and was fine. Hardknott is in a league of its own. In fact, it's terrifying. Thanks for watching pal 👍
Hi paul well done mate you done and that will do nice when you come to them bends going down if you just sat on the grass and watch bikers coming down thay would all be different so you come down as you want as long as you get down there's no hard or fast rule i ride to suits me them type of people that say ride like this or that are the same people that have never drop a bike i have gone to a smaller bike because it suits me and as a police motorcycle was just talking to few of us one he said just ride to YOUR skill level and you will ride better so from strimmer dave hope to see you and ray at the new broom meet up ride safe mate
👏Face your Fears👏 Top marks fella, excellent job the cracking scenery and weather helps, best wishes for whatever stopped the Euro tour☹️ Ride Safe Mr B 😎🤘 PS Ford Hill next 🤦♂️🤣👍
Well done Paul. Was wondering if you had thought about whether it was worse on the RT due to the bikes design / layout or just a confidence thing? I have an RT and being a shorty (29" inside leg), I find the weight more of an issue so stopping is more fraught for me on anything other than flat camber. I also find the high and wide bars a little awkward as they approach full lock all though that could be a reducing strength due to my 68 years....see you at New Broom.
Hi Dave, thanks for watching 👍 Yeah, if I'm honest, I felt better on the Honda. It's not as heavy as the RT1250. Don't get me wrong, I loved the RT when it worked 🤣🤣 I think it was just my confidence knocked a bit.
TAlking about being a nervous wreck doing that pass ,I did it on my gsa all was well until I had to stop ozone of the switchback steep hill for cyclist ,really had to rev the bike and could smell the dry clutch ,had to pull over and was shaking after nearly dropping the bike ,not been back there since .
Well done 👍🏻 I tried it 2 years ago in the opposite direction on a fully loaded RT with my 6’1” son on the back, I bottled it on the 1st accent. It’s also my nemesis but won’t be trying it 2 up and loaded next time!!
Firstly Paul, Congratulations for doing it and believing in yourself that's the biggest hurdle to overcome. I sense that you have things on your mind, so with that in questions I don't wish to pry. However, I would gladly meet up with you at some point and help you with things you may not be sure on. 👍😉
Excellent Work Paul…I was nervous for you …Temporary loss of confidence is always the steepest gradient to climb … Normal Service Now Resumed…Well Done …🎖🎖🎖🎖🎖🤝
Great video and well done! I've (somehow) managed this road from the other direction two up on my FJR twice, and once on my previous VFR in the rain... Never again (he says, until next time) 😅 I sense from your video you are going through a tough time, if that's the case, I wish you well buddy. Stay well and keep doing what you love.
I did this road in July 2019 without any trouble on my DCT Africa Twin. DCT is the best for this sort of stuff. But in Nov 2019 I was involved in a fatal RTA so know how someone’s confidence can be stripped from them in an instant. Good luck Paul don’t let’s this stuff beat you it does get better and easier. 👍 (PS. Sorry if I’ve made the wrong assumptions, I’m new to your channel).
Last time I did these two was in an old Saab 900 Turbo saloon with ignition controller issues in 1986. It was horrendous round the hairpins. Otherwise OK.
That was an exercise in overcoming a personal fears, well done. Others should not be put off, an average rider on an average middle weight (eg CB500) will be fine. There's a few places where the combination of steep camber, steep gradient and a sharp corner will require care and forward planning. Best to look ahead to ensure you don't meet a coach when you're halfway through a difficult bit. I'm a very average rider but had no real problems in either direction on either my GPZ500 or the 600 Fazer that replaced it. I would not want to do it on a Wing or a Rocket 3 but I'll bet that it's been done many times. Best wishes.
In the UK we have scenery/views which could challenge anywhere, but the road conditions and traffic levels are shite, a real shame. Good job on conquering your nemesis head on, nice one! If it's any consolation I found my RT to be a handful on those kinds of roads, and my Goldwing was even worse 😂
Cheers, pal 👍. When I took my RT1250 over, that's when I nearly had and off. This wasn't as bad. However, you're right, it can be a handful. Thanks for watching pal 👍
now turn round and do it in the opposite direction. No, but seriously, well done for conquering that. It's difficult on a bigger bike. I've only done it on my old 600 but in the other direction and it was bad enough. I don't fancy taking my much heavier 1300 up there, so well done.
Bloomin eck! We used to go over those as learners on GT and RD 250s most Sundays for a laugh. I honestly can’t believe people are wetting their pants going over them on powerful adventure bikes.
well done- fair play in conquering your nemesis - local here we call it the shyteknott lol road surface is absolutely horrible - and yep the cameras do not show how steep/ bendy it actually is - so once again well done xx
The thing as well Paul it’s not something that you can have a few practices , and of course a much lighter smaller bike would be easier so you’ve cracked it😊
Well done Paul, My partner and I have done this twice, Her on a Bonneville and me on a Tiger.. I get stuck at exactly the same place as you. We always stop off at the Woolpack to calm the nerves down with a pint of bitter shandy and a long thoughtful look at each other and swear we will never do that again.... We are going back to the Lake District this year. Wish us luck (BTW she doesn't know I have it already set in the satnav route)
Yeah, just about. The camera doesn't show the true camber, and on that bend I walked around, it was pretty steep. If you take your time, it'll be ok. If your thinking of doing it my advice is do it from Little Langdale side, so Wrynose to Hardknott. 👍👍👍
@@paulgriffiths6404 I did porlock hill and was very steep. I'll be fine I'm pretty lanky. Yeh they all say do it from west to east better views but I'm traveling from south not going to bother going around because them roads can take all day. Haha in Cornwall took shortcut had to get out a guide to get over a bridge.
Get the revs up and slip the clutch round those hairpins. Stops the chance of stalling. Stalling on the corner and losing momentum is what can cause you to drop the bike
did it on a vfr 800, defo shit my pants lol I felt like going down was way worse, next time I go im gna skip it since ill be 2up with luggage and thats a no from me, glad i can say i have done it once though, its almost like a badge of honor saying youve done hardknott
Some these roads are so stupid and drivers evenmore so i had stop stop because i coulndt get past and old man was like dont stop there i was like if i move someone will take off my mirrors then he drove off?
@25:48 That shows the true steepness of that part. If you go too fast you end up nearly kirbing on the immediate left turn at the top. I did it on a Triumph Thunderbird 1700 ..... but had had lots of practice on the small roads of the Alps. Not the easiest hill/corner combo on a big bike.
Agree, that's why I did it that way . That hairpin is horrendous. The camera flattens out the gradient. Your braver than me if you did it in the opposite direction. Thanks for watching, pal 👍
GOTTA BE HONEST..... My first instinct was to say 'Get round there my son".... But from the comfort and safety of my sofa, everything looks doable... Easy even. And video just dont cut it! Everything looke more or less level. Besides this was YOUR Personal Battle. So regardless how hard or easy it looks to anybody else, this is how it was for YOU. And the fact that you were able to share that Battle with the biking world, took BALLS. BIG BODANKAS. You have earned the right to a John Wayne Swagger & Drawl for the forseeable future. Props to you my man! Now Im just gonna have to break out the sat nav & start planning... how far away is Wrynose Pass?...... 🥎🏈

I'm a very average rider but had no real problems in either direction on either my GPZ500 or the 600 Fazer that replaced it. I would not want to do it on a Wing or a Rocket 3 but I'll bet that it's been done many times. Best wishes.
Cheers pal 👍
Well done Paul, great ride and video - seemed very quiet for a Bank Holiday in the lakes!!
Cheers pal 👍, yeah I was really surprised how quiet it was.
Hardknott Pass makes the Beallach na Ba (Applecross) look like the M6😊
🤣🤣🤣
Well done , I remember watching your last video on this . Going slow round hairpins are not easy .
Cheers John 👍
Looks scary road where is it
Hardknott pass, lake district.
Well done Paul, great ride.
Cheers pal 👍
Nice one - well done 👍👍
Cheers pal 👍
now turn round and do it in the opposite direction. No, but seriously, well done for conquering that. It's difficult on a bigger bike. I've only done it on my old 600 but in the other direction and it was bad enough. I don't fancy taking my much heavier 1300 up there, so well done.
Cheers pal 👍 thanks for watching 👍
I bet your DCT was fantastic because the bike would put you in the right gear , very good for those tight hairpins👍🫣🏍
It was a lot easier with the DCT. However, I do miss the gears. I can see myself changing back to manual when I change the bike 👍👍
Bloomin eck! We used to go over those as learners on GT and RD 250s most Sundays for a laugh. I honestly can’t believe people are wetting their pants going over them on powerful adventure bikes.
I wouldn't be if it was on a little 250 🤣🤣
Doing hardnott the other way is a wee bit more difficult....
Yeah, that's exactly why I did it that way 🤣🤣
I also think it is marginally more difficult in the other direction, west to east. Either way it does get your full attention!
Nicely done Paul. 👏
Cheers pal 👍
well done- fair play in conquering your nemesis - local here we call it the shyteknott lol road surface is absolutely horrible - and yep the cameras do not show how steep/ bendy it actually is - so once again well done xx
Cheers pal 👍
Well done paul
Cheers pal 👍
The thing as well Paul it’s not something that you can have a few practices , and of course a much lighter smaller bike would be easier so you’ve cracked it😊
Cheers Donna 👍 Thanks for watching 👍
Well done Paul, My partner and I have done this twice, Her on a Bonneville and me on a Tiger.. I get stuck at exactly the same place as you. We always stop off at the Woolpack to calm the nerves down with a pint of bitter shandy and a long thoughtful look at each other and swear we will never do that again.... We are going back to the Lake District this year. Wish us luck (BTW she doesn't know I have it already set in the satnav route)
Cheers pal 👍 thanks for watching
thanks for the video, pronounced 'Rye' 'Nose' I believe
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Well done mate
Cheers pal 👍
Cant u get your feet down?
@rajindernijjer Porlock Hill, yeah that's a cracking road down into Lynmouth. 👍👍
Get the revs up and slip the clutch round those hairpins. Stops the chance of stalling. Stalling on the corner and losing momentum is what can cause you to drop the bike
Cheers pal 👍
you were so fortunate not to get any on coming traffic, do you not have clutch control so things are fairly automatic.
It's DCT 🤣🤣
@@paulgriffiths6404 twist and go !!
@@davidwaddington9414 🤣🤣🤣
@@davidwaddington9414 😂😂😂 you need come to one of our Meet ups? You have definitely got our sense of humour. 😅😅
@@paulgriffiths6404 yes ! and I could tell everyone of my ride on the Hardknott Pass and fell off.
did it on a vfr 800, defo shit my pants lol I felt like going down was way worse, next time I go im gna skip it since ill be 2up with luggage and thats a no from me, glad i can say i have done it once though, its almost like a badge of honor saying youve done hardknott
Cheers pal 👍 thanks for watching
Well done matey,didn’t look easy
Cheers pal 👍 Yeah it is a challenge 👍
Some these roads are so stupid and drivers evenmore so i had stop stop because i coulndt get past and old man was like dont stop there i was like if i move someone will take off my mirrors then he drove off?
Agree, pal 👍 they can be horrendous. Thanks for watching, pal 👍
Cheers pal 👍 thanks for watching 👍
Gutsy! The video doesn't show exactly how bloody awful the road surface is like. 👌👌
The road surface hasn't improved since last time 🤣🤣🤣
did hardknott in my van in a high wind with a girlfriend.did not tell how afraid i was.
It's a really scary road. Respect, Sir!! In a van, that was brave 👍
Thanks for watching, pal 👍
harder other way round for me
Agree, that's why I did it that way . That hairpin is horrendous. The camera flattens out the gradient. Your braver than me if you did it in the opposite direction. Thanks for watching, pal 👍
😂😂😂😂😂 It's Wrynose Pass how many times again 😂😂
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
No one likes that left hand sloping hairpin... reminds of the one at the top of Devils Staircase.
That one was a tough one, pal 👍
🥎🏈
Cheers pal 👍 thanks for watching 👍
