Lee Byung Hun's command of English is quite impressive. I first encountered him in the Kdrama "Mr Sunshine" about 7 or 8 years ago. His English was so natural and perfect - I thought that he was bilingual. He hardly had an accent when delivering his lines. It was only when I saw him in an interview after the Kdrama, where he was spontaneously conveying his own thoughts, when I realised that English is a learned language for him. Truly, I am impressed with his proficiency. 🎉
He has played in many roles as a supporting actor in Hollywood movies like GI Joe, The Magnificent Seven, Terminator Genisys and RED 2. No wonder why his English is incredibly smooth.
He was shy in the past to speak English because he was teased and bullied by actors and staff in Hollywood, he worked for 15 years in Hollywood and he has talked about how lonely it was because of the treatment he received for not being fluent and his accent. The fact he is trying his best to speak English here is something to be proud of.
Are you actually kidding? Learning a language, especially English is not that hard. Only in the west do you lack the will power and brain power. Literally by 16 half of Europe speaks 2 languages.
More lee byung hun pleaseeee, he has such a wide filmography already in Hollywood, I cant believe he’s just now getting more recognised just because of squid game
It’s understandable, back in the 80’s and 90’s we didn’t have internet or steaming so that’s why it was challenging for people to discover actors and movies from other countries
He'll easily get some roles back. Sae Byeok and Gi Hun already have English speaking roles after the first season of Squid Game. What more with him who not only speaks English well enough but also has been in many Hollywood films?
It wasnt racism but it was definitely xenophobia, people were bullying him for not speaking english properly. He wasn't fluent in English as much back then. @saturn2719
Actually, he understands quite well and can speak well, too, but not fluently, especially in pronunciation like Lee Byung Hun, so he would rather talk in Korean instead of causing disruptions, which i totally agree to be the proper thing to do.

Lee Jungjae is so cute on these American shows. He has always been known as someone who is very cool in Korea, so it’s funny to see such a different vibe from him. He is normally the most confident guy in the room.
i think we all need to recognise why lee byung-hun looks so nervous in this interview. its not because he’s suddenly developed stage fright or anything, its because he was literally bullied by people in hollywood for his english and felt very out of place and lonely. for him we can assume this is like reliving all of that. edit: others have mentioned in the comments that he has also suffered from anxiety disorders and understands to be on the receiving end of racism as a result

He's been working back in Korea but still does a lot of international film festival work and lectures.
