  • Not content with renting a car in Alaska during our recent cruise onboard the NCL Bliss... we BORROWED an Alaskan's CAR in Juneau (through turn.com) and then DROVE to Alaska's MENDENHALL GLACIER!!!
    There, we hike to the waterfall on the Nugget Falls Trail, view the Mendenhall Glacier itself from different angles, and hike back to the visitors centre... all before the crowds arrived!
    What else did we drive around and see? Was it worth it? The answer to these questions and more await you in this week's vlog!
    See you next time!

    We just returned from this same cruise and from your prior video we also rented a car from Turo and went to the glacier. Way easier way of getting around and for our group of 5 it was way cheaper than the shuttle busses. Thanks

    Here is some info -> 1) Roundabouts are new in Juneau, we've had quite a few accidents from people not knowing how to use them. 2) The Nugget Mall used to be thriving, it's died down due to bad management. La Salsa has really good food, a lovely family who sadly lost the father recently. 3) Prices in Alaska's larger towns/cities are comparable to the lower 48. 4) The Mendenhall Glacier has receded at record pace this last decade, it used to be up to the waterfall when I was a kid. 5) Renting a car is really the way to go, I would recommend exploring more if you have the time. 6) If you really want to see Alaska, it's better to fly here and take your time on the trails. There is so much you miss, it's insane. 7) At the very least, get out of the downtown area where it's just a bunch of tourist traps. During the summer a lot of people from the lower 48 set up shop and gouge tourists. They don't contribute to Juneau's economy, they bring it all back down south. Ask around to find out what is locally owned.

      Wow, that’s all so useful! We’ve already discussed coming back in a few years (without the teens) and doing a fly/drive instead of a cruise. Crazy about glacier recession. Interesting about the mall… wish we’d eaten at La Salsa now, we just didn’t have time and it almost seemed like I was trespassing in the Nugget Mall (though I know my customer would have been welcome). Agreed, we won’t bother with downtown again. Thanks for taking the time to fill in on all that!

      @@TravellingWithTeens Definitely a lot of good places to eat in town if you ask the locals. Not all of downtown is bad, but the closer you get to the ships the more tourist traps you will find. The Alaskan Brewing company has really nice sweatshirts and souvenirs. I recommend the Rookery Cafe, Sandpiper Cafe, Hangar on the Wharf, and the Alaskan Fudge Company downtown. Heritage Coffee has some great roasts if your into that. The Island Pub over on Douglas Island. Mcgivney's Sports Bar & Grill has locations downtown and Valley. A lot of people love to go to Breeze Inn (lemon creek location) for fresh donuts/baked goods and hot food bar. They make the best breakfast burritos. Wish we still had the Thane Ore House, it was a salmon bake type place, built a long time ago with lots of mining memorabilia. Had all you can eat fresh grilled salmon (sockeye/silver/king), deep fried halibut and bbq ribs. The locals are friendly around here, don't hesitate to ask recommendations. You should definitely head out to Auke Bay and to the end of the road for some really nice Scenery. Also North Douglas, close to the end there are some short hiking trails down the the beach and it's breathtaking. At low tide, you can cross to a little island. My favorite small trail downtown is Gold Creek Flume trail, it connects to the Mr Roberts trail at the end I believe. While in the area, Cope Park has a beautiful river. A really easy one with stunning views is the Airport hiking trail that takes you right behind the airport. Though unfortunately the start of it is located close to a waste processing facility (once you get on the trail you wont smell it). A couple of my favorite trails are Herbert Glacier, Windfall Lake and Perseverance. Oh, on a last note, we really are expecting the Nugget Mall to just die out unfortunately, a lot of shops moved over to the Mendenhall mall. A lot of good memories about what used to be there, we would have huge local craft events too. Wishing you the best on your travels!

    Thak you for this video! Renting a car with Turo was one of the best things we did on this cruise, brilliant suggestion! Easy, and we beat the crowds to the glacier. A pitstop add Fred Meyers was equally surprising to us. We had time to enjoy downtown Juneau and then make our way back to the ship. Thank!

    Great video! The green is glacial sediment. As the glacier moves, the massive amount of pressure and slow speed will super pulverize the rocks as fine as baby powder and then deposits that sediment as it hits the water, making it cloudy and green.

    The color of the water is from "glacial flour". The "flour" is tiny sediment from the glacier. When it's mixed into the water it turns the water to this color. We are also renting a car from Turo when we're in Juneau. We're so exciting for our up coming trip. Thanks for the great video.

    The water color is from the minerals from the rocks eroding under the glacier.

      What do you do meet the car owner at drop off to give the keys back?

    • @TravellingWithTeens
      @TravellingWithTeens  2 месяца назад +1

      The owner arranged for us to pick the keys up at the port so we never saw him. But it’s individual for each car owner how they operate, some meet you there on pickup and drop off yes.

      Since you docked in AJ what was the location name where you picked up the Turo rental. Thanks for the insights.

    Hello, we are travelling to Juneau on a cruise in August and would like to hire a car through Juno. We have British driving licences and British insurance - what is the insurance system for hiring cars through Turo. Great video, thank you

    • @TravellingWithTeens
      @TravellingWithTeens  Месяц назад

      Hello! Tony here. I have a British Driving License as well, and Turo accepted that without any problem - including for their in-house insurance. It’s exactly the same as purchasing insurance with any rental car contact in the US (Hertz, Avis, etc) so you’ll be fine. Have a great time, and thank you for watching!

    May I ask how much was your turo car?

    • @TravellingWithTeens
      @TravellingWithTeens  Месяц назад

      All told, it was $186.87 exactly. There were far cheaper options on Turo, some below $100, but we went with (a) the best-reviewed owner, and (b) a 4-wheel-drive just in case!
