The US Unkown soldier from Vietnam was later identified through DNA analysis and subsequently buried in a marked grave in Arlington. He was replaced by another unknown. There is a really interesting RUclips piece on the tradition of the guards who "walk the mat" at the Tomb in the US which is fascinating. Thank you to all Aussies, known and unknown, for your great sacrifices, they will never be forgotten!

I agree with you. For one thing “Known unto God” is a very poetic and comforting phrase. Even as a non believer, it comforts me. I don’t know about higher powers but it’s is comforting to think that somehow, somewhere, his name and life are known and he is loved and mourned and his sacrifice did not pass by without acknowledgement and appreciation. Additionally, as the narrator stated, at the time that the gentleman died, Australia was still a very Christian nation. So the phrase would have been of comfort to him and his family.

P.S. : I used to refer to myself as an Atheist, which changed for me when I met a Professor, and than friend, who told me that experiencing God on faith alone would drive you crazy. He said that it was very simple, “Just ask God to ‘Show me something’, and stay alert. That was back in 2014. I pray for you!

One of the best days I’ve ever had I mean yeah is incredibly sad but it was also fun and interesting to the extend that sad event could be u know ? Also the line was super long so be prepared! I’m just amazed at like how many Australians take like World War I remember day and things like this seriously where in the states we don’t really care.

@ElizabethMckenzie - Hello Elizabeth. Being an Australian I am glad that you had the opportunity to visit one of our most sacred places. The memorial holds a resounding spiritual hold on us because in WWI especially as a very young nation over 1% of our total population was sacrificed for the cause. I disagree with your sentiment about your compatriates not caring. I have seen first hand how very much most US citizens honour and respect their fallen. Their tears and our tears are all but the same!

There was a similar issue with the Vietnam War Unknown in the US. The Reagan administration wanted to keep the Unknown "unknown" for ceremonial purposes. Fortunately, the rights and needs of the family won out and they were told. Due to records, DNA testing, and modern practices, we're probably not going to have any more "Unknowns". The past is a foreign country indeed.

I recently brought a large, brass -bound family Bible from a Charity Shop. In it were two photographs ... of men who had died in WW1. I'm an atheist ... I study the Bible as a work of literature ... but these photographs have me wondering?

No matter your beliefs, it’s always good to wonder. Wonder keeps our minds young and is the muse of genius.
I too am an atheist. Weird. That’s the first time I’ve put that down in text. Good thing my Quaker Grandma isn’t here to know. I struggled with my beliefs for sooooo long because I felt like my family had gone through so much to practice their faith and here is little me throwing all away in one generation. Yeah. It wasn’t easy. I tried though. I really did. But being a hypocrite was never a goal I aspired to. I still have mixed feelings. Not that I doubt myself. I just feel a twinge of betrayal. My own.

I don't think Known unto God should have been removed, and not just because Rudyard Kipling was responsible for the words, but because every soldier, be they Australian, British, Canadian, went to war with a bible, in many cases, that bible gave them faith, strength and comfort. The words were straight and to the point, we of course, cannot over look the point that most politicians think they are God anyway, and they know everyone. If it's not broke, don't fix it

I am not interested in Dan’s new channel and I consider his ads a waster of my time and am offended that they have gotten around the removal of ads to Premium subscribers by adding ads at the beginning of every video. Sure, I can and do fast-forward past Dan, but I don’t appreciate it and therefore every video, regardless of quality of content, will get a thumbs down from now on.
