Thank you for focusing on the amazing Australian armed forces and their crucial work and bravery during WW1 and afterwards. They have so much to be proud of.
So that all politicians look upon the consequences of their decisions. Once again a great piece of work doing justice to a small nation's most sacred places
The US Unkown soldier from Vietnam was later identified through DNA analysis and subsequently buried in a marked grave in Arlington. He was replaced by another unknown. There is a really interesting RUclips piece on the tradition of the guards who "walk the mat" at the Tomb in the US which is fascinating. Thank you to all Aussies, known and unknown, for your great sacrifices, they will never be forgotten!
No one took his place. It is empty. Also before he was placed there, they stated that his identity was close to being know. known. The individual that was identified is in the military cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri.
I'm an atheistic Buddhist, but I'm glad they kept Known Unto God. It's important to the families and soldiers who were religious, but I'm also glad they added the line from Keating's speech for those who are not or belong to other faiths.
I agree with you. For one thing “Known unto God” is a very poetic and comforting phrase. Even as a non believer, it comforts me. I don’t know about higher powers but it’s is comforting to think that somehow, somewhere, his name and life are known and he is loved and mourned and his sacrifice did not pass by without acknowledgement and appreciation. Additionally, as the narrator stated, at the time that the gentleman died, Australia was still a very Christian nation. So the phrase would have been of comfort to him and his family.
I am very grateful even as an atheist that the Australian people got together and said enough is enough we are not changing that!!! Known unto God! That's a wonderful part of this story also. No more changing history.
They didn’t change history they created it! There hasn’t been a “REAL” history for centuries. We artists will have to re-create our history in ART! A new Renaissance is coming. P.S. : I used to refer to myself as an Atheist, which changed for me when I met a Professor, and than friend, who told me that experiencing God on faith alone would drive you crazy. He said that it was very simple, “Just ask God to ‘Show me something’, and stay alert. That was back in 2014. I pray for you!
Amen. You were never given enough credit in the past. But it took the efforts of ALL the allied forces, and their sacrifices, to defeat tyranny.Thank You all for your service.
We remember the ones That laid down their life. So that we can live free. There is no greater gift. Like or not, This Spirit is the soul of a nation. Those that made such sacrifices, are the greatest friend you never knew.
So I’ve actually been here my boyfriends Australian and I went to visit him one year and we went here on World War I remembrance day and it was so beautiful and sad at the same time they had all these like handmade poppies in the ground and his uncle‘s name is on the wall .. great uncle really it was soo cool tho would highly recommend you guys go if you ever got the chance 🤤😍🥺 best day with bae ever and there’s a really good café nearby. One of the best days I’ve ever had I mean yeah is incredibly sad but it was also fun and interesting to the extend that sad event could be u know ? Also the line was super long so be prepared! I’m just amazed at like how many Australians take like World War I remember day and things like this seriously where in the states we don’t really care.
@ElizabethMckenzie - Hello Elizabeth. Being an Australian I am glad that you had the opportunity to visit one of our most sacred places. The memorial holds a resounding spiritual hold on us because in WWI especially as a very young nation over 1% of our total population was sacrificed for the cause. I disagree with your sentiment about your compatriates not caring. I have seen first hand how very much most US citizens honour and respect their fallen. Their tears and our tears are all but the same!
Thanks to all the dedicated and brave Canadians. We’re it not for your generosity and sacrifice it would be a very different world now. I want you to know that we here in the states owe you a debt of gratitude.
He is every son, brother, father and husband to each family whom never found their own. His service has not ended in death but continues. His resting place is for all whom do not have a grave to lay flowers are grieve for. Do not think of it as selfish but as one more sacrifice for those many daughters, sisters, mother's and wives left alone.
There was a similar issue with the Vietnam War Unknown in the US. The Reagan administration wanted to keep the Unknown "unknown" for ceremonial purposes. Fortunately, the rights and needs of the family won out and they were told. Due to records, DNA testing, and modern practices, we're probably not going to have any more "Unknowns". The past is a foreign country indeed.
@@TaylorLiam87 he was an individual with a name and family he didn't choose to be a symbol. If his name can be returned to him he should have that dignity
@@TaylorLiam87 additionally the success of DNA technologies means that many of the unknown soldiers can potentially be identified. The usa is always actively working to identify war dead going back to ww1 and every year there are advances. As long as are are living relatives there a chance of a match
I recently brought a large, brass -bound family Bible from a Charity Shop. In it were two photographs ... of men who had died in WW1. I'm an atheist ... I study the Bible as a work of literature ... but these photographs have me wondering?
No matter your beliefs, it’s always good to wonder. Wonder keeps our minds young and is the muse of genius. I too am an atheist. Weird. That’s the first time I’ve put that down in text. Good thing my Quaker Grandma isn’t here to know. I struggled with my beliefs for sooooo long because I felt like my family had gone through so much to practice their faith and here is little me throwing all away in one generation. Yeah. It wasn’t easy. I tried though. I really did. But being a hypocrite was never a goal I aspired to. I still have mixed feelings. Not that I doubt myself. I just feel a twinge of betrayal. My own.
I don't think Known unto God should have been removed, and not just because Rudyard Kipling was responsible for the words, but because every soldier, be they Australian, British, Canadian, went to war with a bible, in many cases, that bible gave them faith, strength and comfort. The words were straight and to the point, we of course, cannot over look the point that most politicians think they are God anyway, and they know everyone. If it's not broke, don't fix it
A beautiful docu. I only wanted to coment on the "only known to god" , we must never forget that the heroes who gave their live where believing in god. I think , but thats my personal opinion that remoeving that would not give them right.
I agree with Alan Jones. I’m happy for the compromise. It respects the past. The Rudyard Kipling connection is incidental. It is the original sentiment that matters. Save the new quotes for more appropriate, contemporary circumstances.
Also can I say that when I went here with bae like weeks before he showed me a picture of his great uncle and I swear to god it looked just like him like his twin 0-0 I asked I was like babe 0-0 he was like Ik it’s scary ... is babe a ghost ? Maybe
I don’t appreciate that Timeline has added these History Hits advertisements with Dan to all their videos and I am considering canceling my subscription since I pay extra for Premium RUclips to avoid ads. I am not interested in Dan’s new channel and I consider his ads a waster of my time and am offended that they have gotten around the removal of ads to Premium subscribers by adding ads at the beginning of every video. Sure, I can and do fast-forward past Dan, but I don’t appreciate it and therefore every video, regardless of quality of content, will get a thumbs down from now on.
Who's god? Your god? My god? Aboriginal gods? Buddah? Ganesh? Mohammad? You clearly missed the ethos of the Australian war memorials reasons for being free of religion. It's sad you could watch this and that is your take away...

When ever the Aussies were at war the Kiwis were right there beside us that's why we're. Called ANZACS .
Thank you for focusing on the amazing Australian armed forces and their crucial work and bravery during WW1 and afterwards.
They have so much to be proud of.
That was a fascinating watch. Many thanks to Neil Oliver, his team and the many Australians who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Total respect to all Australia,
Always a friend of the USA
Never been a time greater for our 2 nations to stand together then now.
Is interesting to note that the name of the unknown soldier is one the wall somewhere...
But noone will ever know where
So he isn’t unknown so why all the fuss.
So that all politicians look upon the consequences of their decisions.

What an absolute tragedy that so many died so young. The saddest thing is what may have been.
No more tragic than it was for any other soldier. Why is the Australian so special.
I’m glad they kept the words, “Known Unto God”. Those words are important to the soldiers who were religious. Erasure is evil.

It would de nice to talk about War Memorials around the world.
I think it was a great compromise to use ‘Known unto God’ one one side, and ‘He is all of them and he is one of us’ in the other.

The film Galipoli (2015) is a brilliant depiction of the ANZAC's ordeal.

Not really, cause Canada got it's independence in the 18 hundreds and also participated in several uprisings/wars before wwi
Vimy was a success but it was part of the Arras offensive which was a shambles. Plus the British were also at Vimy.
It's a sad day when we remove "known unto god" from the unknown soldiers tomb just to protect the feelings of a few.
