I think this movie has a strong case of "if it's so artsy that it doesn't make sense, everyone will pretend to love it so they won't have to admit they didn't understand it" An Emperor's new clothes situation. Mia really showed incredible acting chops in this. And everybody else wasn't given enough to work with, even Skarsguard. Because James says so little about his thought process and his actions are so simplistic, you can just read into his performance any number of emotions ... if you want to see a character arc there that doesn't exist. He goes from enjoying the execution so much he hides his passport hoping to experience either more violence and/or sex with Mia's character, but certainly isn't trying to leave in a hurry. But then changes his mind when he beats up his own double.... why? The stabbing was far worse. He didn't try to save his double once the hood is removed. He was just so shocked he left... while the stabbing didn't shock or upset him. I don't buy it. What changed? As far as we can tell, nothing. His motivations were all over the place. And he doesn't explain either his coldness toward his wife, nor his sudden aversion to seeing his double harmed. The film was trying to make so many statements that the message is terribly muddy. Is it about how rich people are depraved? Yes. How about how Americans are culturally insensitive and we use perversions other people's culture or religions as cheap, humiliating entertainment? Yes. Is it an allegory for how addiction and self-harm destroy relationships? Yes. Is it supposed to be about conquering the self and how that changes you? Yes. So in the end, none of the messages make sense because it's all been thrown in a blender and not handled with clarity or craft. Do you understand complex viewpoints make sense when four people are shouting them to you and they're all talking in different languages and without pause? No. The movie is a slow slog. And the ending is so unclear that it doesn't make a statement about anything - it just leaves you bewildered and hopes you buy the BS. It's just *prawn* and *gore prawn* painted up to look expensive and "deep". It's no more clever than the artist who duct-tapes a banana to an art museum wall, gets paid 100k for it and laughs at everyone who stares at the banana (95% those artists are the kids of the super-rich and have nothing better to do than give their parents friends a way to launder money and trade favors, but that's a story for another time, kids). The point is, totally abstract art is NOT deep. Abstract art is a scam sold by art dealers who make billions selling it to the uninformed and the posturing rich who are in on the joke. This film was totally abstract. And prob a way for someone to write off big financial losses for tax reasons. Don't go hurting your heads over trying to sort out meaning. The works of Jackson Polick are just an expensive mess and so is this. I wish someone had warned me so I hadn't just wasted 2 hours on that scam. There was no story in the film: things just happen to people and then more things happen. A string of bizarre events does not make a story. I trusted A24 since my fav movie last year was Everything, Everywhere, All At Once. In-spite of it's visual craziness it never makes you lose the motivations of Evelyn; she and Waymond are clear characters who's desires and feelings are clear at every step of the way. You could say there was some visual abstraction but it all made sense at the end, so many things had meaning by the end even when we'd assumed they were random. They don't treat the audience as stupid in that film. It goes fast and assumes you'll catch up as it speeds toward a destination with fun twists in the middle and end. But no energy is wasted by paying attention. That film rewards the viewer for seeing the patterns, for finding the clues. ...While Infinity Pool laughs in your face for wasting 2 hours of time watching and calls you stupid if you don't "get the punchline". I'm a professional artist and writer. Take it from me, this abstract stuff has somebody laughing all the way to the bank. Please don't watch it
This was a strange movie, And I like strange movies like Raw and Titane, But Infinity pool started off interesting but started to lose steam in the 3rd act, In the 3rd act the movie started being repetitive with the body doubles, Its almost like the director lost direction and ran out of ideas were to go in the 3rd act, But I will say Mia Goth was incredible like always.
I just didn’t know what the f was going on the entire movie, but sometimes I like a movie that strays away from the structure of a rising action, climax, falling action, resolution. It was just pure chaos
I think the 2nd double was showing the power of freedom on the island. The 3rd was to test/trick James into killing one of his own doubles. He wasnt ready for that yet, so they forced him to kill his 4th double. I bet every single piece of this movie has meaning, but this film scrambled my brain. It probably has something to do with killing a "version" of himself to be reborn. A perfect cure for writers block, or truly waking up in this 1 and only life. Or maybe not.
@Tyger Sharq Everything your saying make sense, I probably have to watch it again to fully understand it, But I will probably wait until it's available to stream.
I feel like this is the type of movie that keeps the viewer thinking about the movie long after the credits roll. Can't wait for someone to dissect the deeper meanings. Brandon is David Cronenberg's son, and I truly feel he is doing a solid job at outdoing his dad in the body horror genre. If you enjoyed this movie, you need to rush to see his previous film, Possessor. I recommend you go in cold turkey, and trust me, it'll be as good or better. With similar vibes. I'm excited to see this guy continue his weird creativity.
Highly recommend watching the directors last film POSSESSOR. I enjoyed Infinity Pool. The take on the rich privilege, and government corruption with the police was very interesting. Would love to know what you think of Possessor if you catch it. I actually rate Possessor higher than Infinity Pool.
I love weird and scary movies... that's why I went to see this one. But it just did not do it for me. It could have been done so much better. First of all, I didn't have any reaction to any of them being killed because I knew nothing about them. The audience never gets the chance to get to know the character to actually give a shit if they are in pain or dying or not. It was supposed to be scary, but it wasn't. A lot of the "scary" and "weird" parts are literally only there to shock you. Scenes were drawn out way too long for no reason too. Also, the tripping scenes were just rainbow lights flashing with naked people around. I wish they were more artistic with those parts. When I've tripped, the walls were melting and shit. It could have been so much cooler looking and scary! Lastly, why did he randomly have a change of heart and decide to leave? Because he couldn't kill his body double who wasn't even acting like a human? Dumb. And why did they all leave together like nothing happened? I really was hoping it was going to go in the direction of clones, not body doubles. That would have been so much more interesting and complex... and honestly would have made so much more sense! Annoying.
Thanks for the review and for watching my video, you make some great points, I just looked at it as a freaky adventure with not much meaning other than what the rich would do if there was 0 laws.
@@xthinking0fyoux Saw it last night as well. I think the director was definitely trying to portray how the rich were above consequences. Hence the “Hope to see you again next year.” They can return to their lives after killing numerous people.
@@SD-kw2bn yeah.. as I was watching it though, I thought the body doubles were actually clones. And that’s why he was so loopy after the execution and why they were telling him he’s “fresh” and so new to it. I thought for a second they killed the real him instead of the clone the way the group was talking to him. And they give zero fucks about anything cause they’re all just clones who can just be killed & start over. That would have been a much more interesting movie. It didn’t make sense to me that they were all just rich and able to do crazy shit. Cause like what if they run out of money? He wasn’t rich himself, his wife was. So I was waiting to see if he was going to run out of money and then be killed. There were so many better ways the plot could of gone. Was very disappointing for me.
@CWS and TKP 66-02 I totally agree. But Speak No Evil is definitely one of my favorites right now. I love showing it to people & seeing horror in their faces 😂 I legit felt physically sick after watching that one.
Alright, I just got done watching this one. I'm going to be honest, Infinity Pool is amazing. Alex Skarsgard and Mia Goth are phenomenal, especially Mia. It hits on so many topics without beating any particular one like a dead horse. It leaves you pondering a few things that you think you have figured out, but won't know for sure. It was very artsy, and they could've layed off the Epilepsy scenes just a little (so people with Epilepsy can see it too lol!!!). It borrows from other films, but it's flat out original at the same time. This satisfied me in the way that Barbarian did last year. I give it 3.5 out of 4 stars. I'm going to give my take on the ending like you requested. I believe that when he killed the dog he actually killed his original self. This is the final transformation into the brand new and improved "Strong James" Mia wanted. I believe they lied to him about having the detective make another for their joke. I believe that he has been detained and treated like a dog so much that he actually became one. Because the clone actually killed the original he ends up not getting on the plane and going back to the resort. This is because the clone was born on the island, so it's his true home and he has no reason to leave. I see it your way of course too. This is what I mentioned about it leaves you pondering lol.
Thank you so much Eric, I really appreciate It, I try to stay simple with an approach of did I find meaning or feel something from the movie or is it something I haven’t seen done before.
Thanks for watching. Let me know what you thought of the movie. Also at 1:13, I forgot to mention, he had said he lost his passport.
Plot Twist: James took Salvia at the beach and hallucinated the rest of the movie until the last scene which is reality.

Anyone know what the point of the police car almost hitting James was??? Still don’t know why that happened
I think It showed the police just didn’t care because they’d get money for the doubles or something?
@@lifeofdevint But that was the real James? If they killed him they wouldn't get any money?
How do people that review movies does not know this is David Cronenberg’s son that directed this?
Like who?

Werent the ladies hanging laundry related to the boy who executed the double? They were shown during the first execution.
