I just bought my first ever ND filters from Freewell. They also use a magnetic system, and each filter comes with a magnetic lens cap! They're fantastic so far. I bought the 82mm filters and a step up ring to use them on my other 77mm filter 24-105 (no vignetting!).They look fantastic, and are easy to use. Magnets strong enough for no worries, while still being easy to remove.
The minor cons are that the magnetic lens cap is tricky to remove without taking the filter off as well. Best to use a fingernail to separate them. Also, when used on my 16-35 wide angle lens, there is a bit of vignetting at 16mm. Not too much. I can even combine my 3stop & 6stop filter and solve the wide angle vignette by zooming to 21-22mm. Happy with my purchase! Now I need to film film film with them in 4K HQ on my beastmode EOS R5 😀

I used a song you recommended from Artlist on my first wedding video, and I want to purchase a Sony a7s ii as soon as I can afford a used on on eBay, thanks to your great review. I've been using a borrowed Panasonic Lumix GH4, but it is such a horrible pain "matching" the color science between it and my other two Sony cameras (both a6300s). I have very little money, but have luckily been able to buy several thousand dollars' worth of equipment in the last year. One correction about the Revoring. Although it has hard stops, it DOES NOT prevent the x-pattern from appearing. I bought the revoring after watching videos which said that the hard-stops will prevent the x-pattern. But looks like they were all reading from a script given by H&Y and no one ever demonstrated the hard-stops in action. My mistake for trusting these youtube reviewers.

I think that it could be an amazing combo. I’m thinking to leave always attached the magnetic uv filter (freewell) and just mount the vnd when I need it (or magnetic cpl). Freewell’s filters come even with a lens cap, they have a really clever design.

I've been using the XUME system on all my lenses and filters for a few years now. They make using NDs and other filters much more bearable. All of my main lenses are 77mm filter thread, and a few use step up rings. I'm using HOYA filters and their variable ND is fluid enough not to spin the magnet adapter.
The only gripe I have with them is the compatibility with some lens hoods:
    - Sigma 24mm f/1.4 ART = WORKS FINE, a slight side angle hood insert needed
    - Sigma 50mm f/1.4 ART = WORKS FINE, a slight side angle hood insert needed
    - Canon 85mm f/1.4 L II = WON'T FIT (maybe sanding down the edges of the XUME lens cap would help, I haven't tried)
    - Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 L II = WORKS GREAT, no angle insert needed.
All in all, the XUMEs save a bunch of time and frustration. Way overpriced - and thus require careful consideration.
    A solid 4/5 product.

  • @joshuamakes

I’ve been using xume filters for years, and I recently discovered two more problems: if your variable ND has a little resistance in the ring, turning it will just turn the whole filter instead of changing intensity. And, VNDs are usually bigger than the size of the filter thread, which means if you bump them from behind, they can fly off. So I preordered the revo ring a couple months ago 😬

    • @whoismatt

This was basically a con job by many RUclipsrs selling this junk product and I was gullible enough, like many others, to trust these folks and buy it. I’m shocked that Matt, whom I generally trust, fell on this bandwagon. Placing and removing this product on lenses is just as difficult and probably takes longer than than the regular, and certainly magnetic options. This is truly a piece of junk and for people like me, who shoot run and gun, is completely impractical. It’s not a fast way of placing and removing the filter. It’s good only for studio work, and then why use it instead of magnetic options.
I’m willing to bet Matt is no longer using it in weddings and has gone back to using his magnetic filters. He will not respond to this but I’m think all of us who bought this for faster placement and removal across different lenses are screwed. Are you still using it?

@@SDW2000, The blank RevoRing I purchased covers 67-82mm because I have an 82mm VND.
The other one is the 58-77mm since that will actually cover all my Sony lenses.
So, yes, a 58-77mm would hold your VND and would fit any lens from 58-77mm
Search RevoRing and you’ll find it. I bought mine through a KickStarter in 2019 and I’m just getting it now. So they are very very new. How you would order one now would be through a preorder as Matt had mentioned. But search the web or certainly RUclips and you’ll see how it works. I’m anxious to try it, yet I also want to add the Black Pro Mist along with it. So, it’s going to either mount to the front of the RevoRing or, I’ll have to put the BPM filter on the lens and then attach the RevoRing to the filter. Not sure what the solution is yet, but I hope I can attach the Pro Mist to the front of the RevoRing that has the VND built in, and maybe on the blank unit, I can stack the filters the other direction with the Pro Mist first, and the VND on top.
I know this may be confusing but perhaps I should do a video when I get both those mounts.
I’m with Matt, I hate messing around with filters, I never have time to ‘carefully’ go through the process of adding a filter or removing one, but if this mount works as advertised, I’ll make a special pocket in my ThinkTank waist pouches just for that filter mount.
That’s another tool I love. The ThinkTank belt and waist pouches for lenses and anything else. I HATED a shoulder bag and a pack pack while shooting. It was such a pain in the backside, but the belt and pouches were easy to run with, you have both hands free and there is no weight on your shoulders. And if you crouch down or lean forward, you don’t have that stupid shoulder bag swinging around and in your way. Oh man, just typing that makes me crazy. I’ve done corporate retreat coverage on hikes or climbing up major hills in Sedona and those porches were the best!! It just makes that run&gun style so much easier and saved a lot of energy and major shoulder pain!
Sorry, I went off in a different direction! Hahaha

Very important video :) do I have a Déjà vu? I think that I have seen it before on your channel?
I was thinking about both of those systems BUT :) there was the problem - where will I place my ND filters when they are not on my lens?
The answer came pretty cheap and genius - UURig ND Filter Quick Release Switch Bracket - the filter stays on the lens, the lens cap is there on the filter.

Neither lets you put on lens hood. The magnetic usually doesn't work well with VND or stacked filters when you could be rotating everything the same time.

How does the Revoring 82mm do on a 24-70 2.8? When I use my 82 mm SLR magic, there’s vignetting in the corner when shooting at 24 mm.

Dear colleagues, I want to share my experience in case you are thinking to buy it, of non existing support from H&Y as well as bad experimental design.
    1. The Lock mechanism is unusable and will not stay firmly, it not secure and will suddenly fall , like it happened to me, and I ensured it's very firm when attached. Did attach by instructions. The filter actually never "locks". It's just get tightened and then again loosens and rotates again, that's how it's built. Not like regular filter that you screw and you know you are at the end and it's secure. Not the case here. Especially if you rotate the ND pin in other direction to the one screwed the filter. Probably it will fall. It happened to me after screwing in on the lens and wasn't touching anything for an hour, then fall off by itself.
    2. The X shape pattern on ND is very visible and not usable after ND5-7. So , what's the point claiming of 10 stops and when from ND 7 it's not usable.

    3. There are no markings on ND after ND 5 to 10 ND , so you have to guess.
    4. There is grainy pattern when using ND/CPL, compared to my other filters I own(Haida, Tiffen, Hoya). It seems not as clean on the sky.
    5. The support is non existent. Will not honor warranty. Will accuse you and say that it's your human error, no matter what.
    6. The rings ND and CPL are close together, so it's not that easy to control one without touching the other one. See how it's built.
Their "test" to show that you did wrong is to put the filter static on lens for 24 hours, but it's not happening in reality. The filter pins are intended to be touched to control ND and CPL, and no one puts it for 24 in static position. You move with the camera. That's their shitty test to say I'm wrong.
The pins to control ND and CPL where supposed to be touched, to control ND and CPL, but every slight touch can lock out and drop the filter . No secure filter system at all. The company did not honor the warranty and didn't want to fix the filter within the first month of use. Shame company. I was securing and fitting to lens strictly by instructions. Will not buy again from H&Y.
I will continue to use my regular, non variable ND's and CPL's from more true photography companies like Hoya, Tiffen and Haida I own. Never to H&Y again. They are for making money I think, not into a photography really. Lack of basic support is bad.
Their boorishness to my support request is unacceptable, saying to me that I'm saying nonsense and accusing of wrong use, without knowing that for sure. Just a trash Chinese company in my opinion. 1,2 and 5th point - see if you want this for yourself.

    • @whoismatt
      @whoismatt  3 года назад

I've found it really depends on the weight of your ND filter. If it's lighter it should stay on pretty well. Definitely not as strong as the RevoRing though
