Hi Nick, I purchased the Maven filter set off your recommendation, received them a couple of weeks ago and absolutely love them. Full set (CPL, 3,6 & 10 stop), 2 step up rings and caps. They have made such a positive difference to my work flow. Thanks for posting.
I really like the support of good products from small independent businesses because after all photographers are small independent businesses themselves. Thanks for the review Nick.
I am at the point where I have been researching the filter set I'm going to invest in. Your info came at the perfect time and I look forward to using these filters. Thanks
One of my subscribers told me you made a video on the Kase filters and you had some problems with them. I am certainly finding them to be a bit of a pain over time, I don't think mine have got weak like yours yet but it is noticeable each time I go to use them. I won't be investing in more magnetic filters in the future, I will stick with my square filter system as it is a little slower but it offers greater flexibility with other filters and accessories.
Got in on this thamks to this video. I was actually looking at Kase and was about to pull the trigger.Thank you for this video. Seems like a great product and it feels good to know that an independent individual is responsible for ths
I wish l had seen your video before recently buying the Kase circular magnetic system,. Only used them a few times and the black coating is coming off the edges and the magnets are failing in normal carrying situations with filters and caps falling off luckily nothing has broken yet. Not at all happy after spending £450 and following all the professional photographers endorsements (Obviously paid) so thanks Nick for being above this selling your soul for a handful of coin.
A magnet can be remagnetized by rubbing a neodymium pole, for example, against the opposite pole of the old magnet, allowing it to be repeated on the other side and achieving the desired effect.
Nick, I've been using Freewell filters since they came out, 3 yrs now...never have a problem with the magnets , no color distortion..I have all 82 millimeter filters with the step down rings, they go on all my lenses.. Polarizer, 4 ND filters from 3 to 10 stops, that's all I need for my whole kit.. and I have quite a few lenses...
@@stephenschmid492 I always use my hoods. No problem with fitting w/filters on.. As a Sony shooter, some of my lens hoods on the g Masters have a little trapdoor you can put your finger in there to slide your polarizer around.
Colour coding, a genius idea. Despite being careful, my Breakthrough filters are scratched and rarely get used. I have been thinking about a getting a magnetic set, the Mavens look ideal.
Hey Nick, I have been following your channel for sometime and have never sent in a responds, looks like there are many people here. I wanted to share that I did purchase/donate (however) and look forward in receiving these filters in March. I have been frustrated with the screw on filters and was also looking into the magnet style filter system. With these filters being color coated set me over the edge in getting these filters along with the glass quality and small design. Looks like there has been some thought put in with these filters for the people out in the field. Thanks again for your continued advancement in photography.... Gary
Thanks Nick for your review that got me excited about Maven filters. However, I appreciate you telling me how you do it when you want to shoot with gradient filters. Thank you in advance.
Agreed. I really like my Kase set - except the useless cover. I was immediately disappointed with the cover after purchase. The Maven seems to check all of the boxes - love the idea of color coding.
Thank you Nick , I was just about to purchase a set of kase magnetic to try them out , this vid saved me some hard earned cash . May the light always favour you.
I have Kase magentic filters, some circular and the Armour 100mm system. The magnets on the Armour system are much stronger than on the circular ones. I can even stack four filters, they won't go apart without stronge force. Additionally everything except the front inner circular filter can be additionally locked up. As there is no special cap for these filter system I use a 10x10 cm sheet of aluminium plate and put that into a magentic frame which works very well as protection when I don't want to detach the filters from the lens. I hope the magnets will not loose their strength over the years..
There seems to be some inconsistency in the magnet strength with Kase.. some have the weak magnets I had, some have stronger versions... makes me wonder why some are strong and some are weak.
I’ve seen you talking about these on instagram, and when you showed the link to the kickstarter I immediately bought them. I’ve been wanting to buy filters for years but they were so expensive. Can’t wait to receive them !
Thank you so much for making this video and pointing these out while I still had time to contribute to the KS. These filters solve virtually every issue I have with filter sets of all kinds, and they're basically perfect for my wife and I and what we need. Pledged the KS for a double-set for my wife and I, and I can't wait to have them in hand to try them out!
I haven’t had my Kase filter set long enough to experience demagnetization, but I immediately discovered I had ordered one size too small (for one lens I’d overlooked). Now you have introduced me to a much better replacement option. Thanks! History repeats itself. My F-Stop was the most comfortable pack I had ever owned for any purpose, but your Shimoda review revealed many features that addressed familiar shortcomings of the F-Stop. The one shortcoming of the Shimoda is it’s popularity. They all look the same, especially in the dark. As I walked up the beach at the end of a recent Out of Oregon shoot to retrieve my pack I saw someone pick it up. I had to call out, “Hey, that’s my Shimoda!” Now, off to order my Kase replacement (82mm this time).
haha so true.. on my workshops most of my clients use shimoda's and we are constantly grabbing the wrong bag haha.. I am going to have to get a bright colored rain cover to put on my bag now lol
@@NickPage As a service to their customers Shimoda should offer rain covers in a variety of colors and patterns, perhaps paisley for those of my cohort who came of age in the 60s, for instance.
Nick, Thank you for another helpful product review. I'm still thinking about whether to take the plunge on the Maven magnetic filters. In part because of your review, I recently switched my camera bag from an F-stop to the Shimoda, and am happy I did so. I took my orange F-Stop handle pad and use it on my Shimoda now. I may need to add some additional colored items to further differentiate my bag. Good to see the Canon R5 in this video. I'm looking forward to your final decision whether you make the switch. I vote Canon.
When I first got my Kase magnetic filters (almost three years ago now) my CPL was regularly falling off as I was moving the camera about. It survived unscathed, but I nearly lost it many times. Most annoying. But I did notice that subsequent filters I bought seemed to have strengthened the magnet as I'm no longer having that problem. I wonder, also, whether it has anything to do with how you store them stacked. I store mine unstacked in their small case, and have not noticed any degradation of the magnetic force over time - they are still nicely grippy. The colour coding is a nice idea, but storing them in the Kase case(!) I always know which filter is where. To be honest, I don't think I would want the grip to be any stronger as it would make getting them on or off more likely to move the camera. (I noticed for example, you had to try a little harder to get the Maven filter off the lens cap at 2:54 and a small edit - did you struggle to get it off and edit that out?) The Kase CPL is about as hard to rotate as I would want and I can't help but wonder whether the increased magnetic force on the Maven would make the CPL harder to rotate. It would be great to see their optical quality compared, though, as that is closer to the bottom line for me.
I guess I should have touched on the fact that.. with my Kase filters.. for the most part I always traveled and stored my Kase filters in a pouch.. separated. Yeah with the stronger magnets, sometimes its tricky to separate the filters from each other.. but I would MUCH rather have than problem, then the problem I had with Kase with stuff falling off.
I have the Kase magnetic filters. I agree the lens cap is not as strong as it needs to be, but apart from that the filters are good and performing to expectations. Will be interested to see how the Maven magnetic filters are performing in a year's time - please keep us updated Nick.
Thanks for the hot tip, Nick! You have suggested several products (socks, outdoor vital pants, car jump battery...) and they have all been better than expected. Totally looking forward to getting a set of Mavens (sometime in Dec per the site)
Glad to hear those other products have been treating you well.. I pride myself in digging through the mess to find the good stuff... rather than just whoever is willing to send me their junk. Sometimes good info is hard to find.
I’ve been pleased with the K&F concepts magnetic filters. The build quality is great and the magnets are very strong. I only have the ten stop ND for now but may add a couple more.
@@montazownianr1 they are really good. If they sold for three times as much then they would be all the rage with You tube photographers instead of Kase.
You've had those Kase filters a few years now. It's likely a little erosion that's worn down the Kase coatings enough to weaken the magnetism. I wonder how these new ones will wear over time; the laws of physics, including friction, are undefeated. The Maven's glass element is an improvement, though, for sure.
@@TejaPamganamamula good to know this . I just spent 2 months travelling and swearing at my kase square filters and was going to replace them as soon as i got home. Will try the kickstarter now
@@stevemeier7876 good idea, I lost one of my Kase filters over a canyons edge after it got knocked off the front of my camera. It was just my hand trying to adjust the manual focus.
Love the magnetic filters I’ve been using the ones from Haida, magnets still strong on them, I do like the color coding on these though might give them a try down the line.
Glad I stumbled upon this video. I’ve been contemplating magnetic filters for some time. I’m constantly switching filters between my 2 primary lenses and it take so much time in the field. I think I’m going to love the ease of magnetic filters. And if you’re endorsing these then I feel good about the campaign ( been burned in the past on kickstarter). I’ve backed the complete package and can’t wait to get them for 2023!!
I can understand the concern over kickstarter campaigns. If it was some unknown outfit and no well known creators (like Nick) were reviewing it positively, I would be hesitant too. But, in addition to the fact that Nick is giving it a favorable review, Michael Andrews has been around a long time and I've purchased several of his tutorial videos and been pleased with his customer support. With Michale Andrews involved I feel much better about backing this kickstarted campaign.
Thanks for the recommendation and practical review. You’ve converted me to try magnetic filters. I’m using Lee original 100mm system which is great but over the years I’ve had a couple of niggles when I’m seascaping and rushing, also in rain when the droplets find their way down the slots and onto the back of the filter’s especially the front 105mm CP filter. Obviously the bulkiness of the Lee is annoying. So, I’ve backed this Kickstarter project for the Special full set. It didn’t give me the option to select the filter size though at this stage.
Well, this had the unintended result of selling me on keeping my threaded filters. For one, I'm not a fan of package deals because I'd rather buy just the filters I'd use (polarizer and 3-stop is generally enough for me), but the big thing is the magnets. I'm glad this company has a lifetime warranty, but it's not something I really want to deal with. Sure, it can be a bit of.a faff to screw them on, but I've been using the same filters for several years with no problems and never have to worry about them just falling off.
I recently purchased the Kase system, and although I do like it, the magnets are not that strong, especially the lens cap. Mine is new so it hasn’t been subjected to much use. The lens cap gets knocked off very easily.
Awesome, I've been contemplating getting some magnetic filters to replace the threaded filters I have, and also to replace the square filters that takes way too long to setup. I was about to order the Kase filters, but now I'll go for Maven instead. Onwards to kickstarter! :P
Thanks for the heads-up, Nick. I actually just lost a Kase lens cap after Out of Oregon, and wasn't too happy about that. I just backed for a full set, and it looks like there are only a couple more backer slots left. Love the color coding, stronger magnets, and better optics of these.
So, I am going to give a reason why you might want to stick with the Kase over any other filter set… here me out. When I went with magnetic filters, I tried the Freewell first and sent them right back because the Nikon Lens cap didn’t securely fit onto the magnetic adapter. Why not is this a problem and why not just use the magnetic lens cap? Because no magnetic lens cap is designed where you can pinch it from the front to remove it. This is a problem, when you have a lens hood (especially on the Nikon f mount 24-70) it is very hard to remove the lens cap. If you remove the lens hood, the magnetic cap isn’t strong enough to stay on the lens. So, for me, it is in absolute requirement that the original lens cap securely fit on lot the magnetic adapter ring. The Kase is the only filter set I know of where the Nikon lens cap fits perfectly and securely onto the adapter ring. I was going to purchase the Mavens (they look incredible), but I decided to order an adapter ring to test it out first. Sadly, the lens cap doesn’t securely fit onto the adapter ring. It does fit, but it easily falls off and the Maven Lens cap is just like all the others where you can’t easily remove it from the front with a pinch like a traditional lens cap. So, I’m purchased the new Kase Revolution Magnetic filters who, frankly, ripped off Mavens idea to color code their filters. Since the New Kase filters are backwards compatible with the old, I know the lens cap is going to fit perfectly. This is a big deal to me and I just thought I’d add this in case it is for anyone else
Only because I trust you Nick, I went all in on a set. Have been looking at the Kase filters and it seemed like Breakthrough never got their magnetic filters going (they still could). Thanks for the video and recommendation
Are these compatible with OEM lens hoods? If not,, are there other solutions? Seems like a bad idea to forgo the frontend protection a lens hood affords.
I totally agree with you on Kase filters magnets. The cap is totally useless and it feel like it's a scam. I should've returned it when I had the chance.
Hi Nick! I appreciate this video. Here's a dilemma and a question, though. I'd like to buy one set of filters, at the size of my largest lens, and adapter rings for the smaller lenses. But when you put the adapter rings on, you can no longer use a lens hood. I've considered getting CPL's for all lenses at their correct size, and then just use the adapter rings when I want to use an ND, which is far less often. How do you handle using lens hoods? Do you just never shoot with a hood and a filter at the same time?
Ok I think the Kase filters you shown were the first iteration m the Wolverine series? I believe they addressed that problem with the Revolution ? I thought the Kase was the way to go , as they have that clever insert that goes inside the lens , also I think the step up ring also magnetically connected . But you’ve kind of steered me towards Maven
I purchased Freewell magnet ND filters (6 & 10 stop and a CPL) over a year ago and so far I've have no problems the lens cover and filters popping off, good quality optical glass filters and I haven't seen any color casting problems. I do like the color coding of the Maven's, it would it quicker to pick out the filter.
Interesting point about the magnets. I guess time will tell if the magnets in the Maven filters will get weaker over time. I can't wait to get my set from the kickstarter campaign.
We are watching this and researching it closely. We have measured the magnetic forces of both brand new, ours are about 9 Newtons, and Kase is about 3 Newtons on the set we received. So we know brand new MAVENs are about 3x more magnetic, so even if we lose some strength over many years it may not be significant. All that said, LIFETIME WARRANTy if there are any issues. Best wishes!
@@MMaven I am very passionate about Long Exposure Photography and have bought 6 or 7 different filter sets over the years. Can't wait to get my copy of the Maven filters. I was an early backer on Kickstarter so wait is almost over. 😁
It will be interesting to see if the magnets on the new Maven filters weaken over time, as they did on the Kase filters. We'll also have to see if they suffer from are any color shifts. From what I have see/read thus far, the Polar Pro Filters are the best.
I own a set of polar pro quartz line as well.. and these have a very similar build quality and optical quality which is a big compliment. These just have the added benefit of being magnetic. Zero color shift, and I’m sure the magnets will fade over time I think all magnets will but because they’re starting probably three times as strong as the case filters, and combined with a lifetime warranty that’s why I feel so confident recommending these after having struggles with another magnetic system
A few comparisons ( Slanted Lens, Josh Sattin,) show the Polar Pros not as good as NiSi or Freewell for color shift/ vignetting. I';ve been looking hard!
@@NickPage Hi Nick, I hope you are doing well and shooting often. How are you liking the Maven filters? Have you had sufficient time to evaluate them? I need a 3-stop ND filter and leaning toward Polar Pro. The magnets look terrific, but I am primarily concerned with color rendition. I'll be using it for video and the filter will remain on the lens for extended periods. Thanks.
@@globalfunseeker6733 The Maven Filters have Zero Color cast that I can detect.. I love them and have zero hesitancy in recommending them. The Quartz line of Polar pro are nice.. I have them and have tested them.. but prefer the Maven for the speed of use... magnets combined with the color coding make all other filters seem tedious and slow
I think the colour coding is a great idea as I have ended up colour coding the sections in my Kase pouch to easily know which filter is which. I haven't had my Kase filters as long as you Nick but had them for over a year and am always taking them on & off and not noted any weakening in the magnets. In fact I have to be careful in removing the lens cap or it flies off. I do think you were wrong though when you said the Kase filters were made of plastic not glass - I believe they are toughened optical glass. Anyway, always good to see new entrants into the market and will certainly watch with interest the long term performance but happy with my Kase set up so far.
My magnets were not very strong to begin with, which gave them less wiggle room for losing magnetic strength. Some people have had much stronger magnets with their filter set, which makes me think they either changed their design, or the strength is very inconsistent across the line. I probably lost 20% of its original string or so
I once backtracked all of the way down a steep wooded slope in the redwoods looking for my Kase CPL. I found it at the bottom. It had fallen off when I jumped down from a log.
I've been kicking around going in on a set of these for a couple weeks now... see your video, aaaand, they're gone! Guess that's what I get for dragging my feet!!
Hi Eric! Sorry about that, we are experiencing a very high volume of orders right now. The will continue to be listed until the end of the campaign. Best wishes!
Great video as always. But the fading of the magnets is one of the issues I have in terms of longevity with stuff. I don't own any Kase-Filters or "high quality" ones. I am a hobbyist and the prices of filters is just way out of proportion for me. Adding Magnetic filterholder or anything else on top - that's the price of a complete lens with fast aperture. I don't like the filter-threads on my "middle priced" filters because they don't screw neatly into each other. The lens screwing is fine. They just don't interlock neatly so I have them in a small pouch. I always want to have better filters like the Kase back in the day or even square filters with a holder. But nope - I will pass on that based on what you have shown here. The Kickstarter is real great and all - but what about the quality in 5 years?
I tried those out when they first came out, they were terrible about getting stuck on filters and breaking and the magnets were never strong enough. That’s why it’s so refreshing to have nice strong Magnets on a set of filters like we’ve
I just took the plunge. As an amateur, it's hard to justify a big purchase like this, especially one that renders past purchases obsolete, but I'm assuming they're higher quality than what I have, will take up less room in the camera bag than all those little cases and will solve the "can I screw on this 10-stop without messing up my focus" issue.
have them but find them to be pain in the butt especially when you got multiple lenses of various sizes. you actually have to plan ahead depending on what lens you're using.....
These look awesome. Apart from the color coding on the filters, I also see that they have notches around the filter so it looks like the 3 stop has 3 notches, the 6 stop has 6 notches and the 10 stop has 10 notches, and the polarizer has continual notches around the filter, please correct if I'm wrong. If that is the case then looking for 3 notches or 6 or 10 would be a simpler way of choosing the correct filter you're looking for and just what I'm looking for.
This is great, Nick! I have been using the KASE filters for a couple of years now. Learned about them from you. I love the magnetic circular filters. But I was frustrated by the lens caps easily falling off and the lack of magnetic hold if you stacked filters. Classic case. Standing in a stream to photograph a waterfall. Using the CP and and ND and while adjusting the tripod a bit. Oops. Fortunately the stream was shallow and nothing was broken. But it made me very skittish to use these filters in combination. I’m glad I caught this vid today! I jumped on the Kickstarter. Only problem was that I wasn’t able to get a step up adapter for my 70-200. I’ll need to wait on that I guess. Apparently they were all out of that “reward”. Looking forward to checking these out!
@@MMaven Thanks! I made the change successfully. I went with the Early Bird - Full Magnetic Set (I'll be getting a 82mm set), 2 lens caps, an additional magnetic ring and a step up ring. I have two 82mm lenses that will always have the adapters on them as I assume these will work with lens hoods. Then I have a 77mm lens to which I will mount the step up ring and use the 82mm lenses. Things I really like. Stronger magnets (vs my current setup), the ability to rotate the CPL through the openings in my lens hoods, and the color coding. I'm already a believer in magnetic, circular filters. Your address my major issue with my current set and add a couple of nice features. Well done!
Perfect timing, as I am in the market - unfortunately by the time I realized I didn't yet have a kickstarter account, the two 82mm reward options were sold out. Guess I'll be waiting until retail!
A really REALLY big requirement for me is that the filters support the standard lens caps. The first brand I bought didn’t and I sent them right back but the Kase filters do allow you to snap on a lens cap. This is important because I found that the magnetic lens cap fell off too easily.
Seems like everyone is gettngg onto the magnetic lens filter train. Personally I haven't bothered (partially because my screw in ones still work and are in great shape so not need to upgrade). It's a bit more of a hassle but I don't have to worry about them falling off unless they are extremely loose for some reason. But I also sort of wonder if over time, and heavy usage, if all magnetic filters will start to lose their strength to stick to the eachother and the mounting ring? I mean even pouches and phone cases that have the magnetic flap tends to wear out over time where the magnet doesn't hold as well, so I think part of it is just with repeated use of putting the filters on and removing them, the magnets get weak (by "over time" I mean years, and perhaps that's what happened with the Kase filters).
@@Fessoid They are made out of the same Materials as the other filters, just a different design for square filters and graduated filters, which in my opinion is not a good Thing.
@@NickPage One quick follow up question that helps me determine what thread size to get for the kickstarter. On your Sony 16-35mm 2.8, do you see vignetting at 16mm stacking the polarizer + ND? Looks like you are using 82mm threads.
@@lightexplorer On that Lens, absolutely everything vignettes. So yeah definitely see some vignetting. Especially when stacking. Sony really should’ve made that filter thread size larger
Hi Nick, thanks for the review, one question, is possible to have the magnet ring compatible with standard Filters with thread to convert to magnetic? Thanks
It’s a great idea to introduce some colour to filters. I dropped a black filter into a river I was standing in. Not deep but very cold. I had not chance of seeing it. Maybe a bit of colour would have given me half a chance. After feeling around with frozen fingers, I eventually gave up.
I've heard good things about the Freewell set. Thanks for the tip on these Mavens, look great especially the push to codify color performance. Will help the whole industry. I wonder if your Kase filters demagnetized over time due to the local influence of opposing fields when stored stacked up.
I take it you don't pack your lens hoods anymore? - Something I've been considering - I used to use the 4x5 film holder slide to shade my lenses unless I was shooting my Nikon or Contax 645. Now that I've switched to a single system - FujiFilm XH2 I suppose I could go that route - it works most of the time, and when it doesn't it I probably would get any benefit from the OEM hood. 1. Color coding is a fantastic feature. 2. Easy to carry a stack of filters and pull the one you need. 3. Adapters mean you have one size lens cap - so you can carry an extra. (we've all lost a lens cap at some point.) 4. one less hassle (lens hoods) I've just about talked myself into it.
Yeah I stopped carrying lens hoods quite a while ago unless it’s for my telephoto lens when shooting wildlife. I just get annoyed with the extra space they take up and how little they do for a wide angle lens anyway
All the more reason to buy filters with lifetime warranties. The Kase filters came with such a weak magnets to begin with that was a big problem… I won’t ever buy another set of filters without warrantees
I like this, but I need to wait until these have some time on market before I make this jump. For all I know at this point, the magnets will weaken in a year or so on these just like the Kase.
Thanks for the heads-up and honest review as always. I've been in the market for a good set of magnets for a while. Almost bought the kase, but I think I'll give these a try instead.
Backed! It said there was only 1 spot left for the Kickstarter Special when I followed your link (what are the chances??!). Looking forward to having one full set for life.
For while before I seen your videos and bought me Kase Wolverine set based of your recommendation and other photographers recommendations :) and it was like 4 months back :D damn so bad I didn't know haha
that is the single hardest part of making gear recommendations.. sometimes the recommendation changes... then everyone that purchased on the old recommendation is like.... what gives man!.... just be gentle with the Kase filters and if the magnets give out on you.. complain!
I love the Kase system, the magnets feel strong so far. Have hard time separating filters from one to another, and on the lens they stay so far. I use the pouch included so that I don't weaken them by using it wrong :D so far so good and really awesome results and it is so handy to use. Of course Nick you are entirely right :) I bought my kit with 3,6,10ND lens cap and CPL for 300 bucks :) and eventhough it was quite bit of money I love it. I hope they won't fail me
I too have been thinking about magnetic filters or the Manfrotto option of adding magnetic rings to existing ones, but now learning that they lose strength over time puts me off. Shame, as at times a threaded polariser will stick onto a lens and is difficult to remove without a filter wrench.
Those old Xume adapters were terrible.. I had to cut several of them off of filters back in the day.. much better off to just have a dedicated Magnetic system.
This is true, it will work with the lens that is the larger filter thread size, I haven’t used lens hoods in years because they annoy the hell out of me and my hand does a better job when it’s need it anyway
Now opened a sale on Indiegogo (after closing on KickStarter). Kicking myself I missed seeing your video until a day after Kickstarter campaign closed as they are a good deal more expensive on Indiegogo, but probably still a good deal.
yeah i believe the retail price once they are officially on the market will be around $499 or so.. which they are certainly worth, but a good deal more than the Kickstarter price
Well i very nearly bought the Case filters but decided to hold off. Glad i did because these look much better and quite a bit less expensive. Now what to do with all my screw on BW German filters. They are high quality and too expensive to just chuck.
@@jerryinsc I did read in their instructions something about the lens cap not being used like a normal lens cap! I had already purchased the kit and lost the cap by then. I suspect they would just refer me to their information and blame me. What’s the point in a cap if you can only use it under certain circumstances though?
Hello Nick , I saw these filters and I'm thinking of ordering them, I'm just wondering when the magnetic holder, specifically for the canon 15-35 rf lens, is put on, can the lens hood also be put on or will it rest on the filter and it won't be able to be mounted. Thank you.
My Kase CPL fell off in the middle of the Black Desert in Iceland and I didn’t realize it. Stopped for a snack break and another hiker came along and asked if it was mine. What are the odds? Yes, the magnets are not a strong as I’d like and often the filters detach from the lens in the bag. Not good!
Always glad to hear that new products offer innovation. My Kase filters are still doing great. The lens cover never was strong enough (even when new). Strange they haven't fixed that. I do love the color-coding. Do you think it would work to add a small spot of nail polish to edge of Kase filters to help with identifying?
Probably would…. I think color coding is such a clever little practical hack most filters will start doing feature as well I expect to see this mimicked many times
Looking good those filters. I am still sticking with regular crew on filters cuz i user cpl and 6nd so for me easy to know which is which, also i made marking on filter where to attach for easy to srew on, so for me its perfectly fine. I have good quality filters with coated glass so im solid staying without extra investment, but who knows what future brings :) Thanks Nick for sharing your opinion. Its good to know those exist and you are satisfied with it :) Cheers
I've lost my Kase polarizer twice because of weak magnets. Luckily, both times I was able to retrace my steps and find it... for the price.... That sucks.
@@jerryinsc I get what your saying, but when your shooting during fast moving shoots and quickly changing light... I am not going to reach up.. take filter off.. walk 30ft to my new composition reaching in my pocket get the filter again.. I want my set up to work quickly otherwise the main benefit of the magnetic filters (speed) is lost. I need my gear to keep up with me, not slow me down ya know?
@@jerryinsc I’ve certainly been burned by both knobs and lever clamps. There’s really only one clamp that I trust and that is the original really right stuff lever clamp… i’ve had other clamps fail while crossing rivers to disastrous effect. To me the best of all heads on the market are there really right stuff and pro media gear ball heads although I prefer the locking mechanisms with really right stuff
Nick, glad I found yr video on Maven before pulling the trigger on Kase. One question, all my lenses have 77mm diameter filter ring, do you suggest stepping up to 82mm set to avoid vignetting on a 16mm-35mm wide? BTW, own most of yr courses, honestly you are the best teacher of advanced PS skills there is!
I know that you now have the Canon RF 14-35 f4 L. I also have this lens and I have to shortly to choose my filter size from the Maven kickstarter pledge I made some time ago.. Just wanted to know if you think the 77 mm will be ok on this lens? My other RF lenses are 77mm…👍

I b ought these filters through the kickstarter. Glad I did. - they are awesome on so many levels.
Thanks Nick! I've been considering magnetic filters and this was the encouragement I needed.
I'm curious, how you deal with using lens hoods? Just forget about them? Or never use them and filters at the same time?
Pledged the KS for a double-set for my wife and I, and I can't wait to have them in hand to try them out!
you will love them... best filters I have found so far!
@@JMSteger … and a fluorescent handle pad would be helpful after dark.
They even look great. 👌
I jumped on the Kickstarter about a week ago after you mentioned them on Instagram. Looking forward to these, they look great!
I have also found that my Kase filters are failing Its nice to know there are alternatives Thx Nick Great review
Thanks, Nick. I would be interested to see you do a comparison of the image quality (e.g. coloration) between the Kase and the Maven.
I have the Kase magnetic filters. I agree the lens cap is not as strong as it needs to be, but apart from that the filters are good and performing to expectations. Will be interested to see how the Maven magnetic filters are performing in a year's time - please keep us updated Nick.
Will do
Hi Nick, how are the Maven filter set holding up a year later
Thanks for the hot tip, Nick! You have suggested several products (socks, outdoor vital pants, car jump battery...) and they have all been better than expected. Totally looking forward to getting a set of Mavens (sometime in Dec per the site)
Glad to hear those other products have been treating you well.. I pride myself in digging through the mess to find the good stuff... rather than just whoever is willing to send me their junk. Sometimes good info is hard to find.
Thank you Nick for the great review! Much appreciated!
Just ordered mine from them, hope they arrive soon to test them on my Dolomites trip next June!
I’ve been pleased with the K&F concepts magnetic filters. The build quality is great and the magnets are very strong. I only have the ten stop ND for now but may add a couple more.
They are the best, and you can connect a hood :)
This is actually a great question. We are going to study this and take a look at it.
I was going to buy kase circular but not now
I have brand new Kase filters and the magnets are definitely not that strong. I've had quite a few fall off.
I think you will be very happy with these! Excellent filters
I have spoke to Andrew at Kase for years about the weakness of the Magnet cap but he always says they are ok haha 😄
I just put in a pledge for them..been wanting the magnetic filters cause I hate the screw on type, love they have the colors and case. Thanks Nick!
Once you go magnetic, you’ll never go back. They are so so nice
Thanks for the review Nick! I've been a backer on these for a couple weeks now.
One of my magnetic lens caps (Freewell) is starting to fall off with alarming regularity. I can no longer trust it. It's 2-3 years old.
@@tomheim9516 On the Freewell website, they state their filters are a limited lifetime warranty, maybe the lens caps are also.
😁
I just bought Kase Revolution series, it's newest updated and I think Kase is a progressive brand
I probably lost 20% of its original string or so
Thanks for this - I have been pondering magnetic filters for a long time.
These look interesting.
I once backtracked all of the way down a steep wooded slope in the redwoods looking for my Kase CPL. I found it at the bottom. It had fallen off when I jumped down from a log.
I once went swimming trying to catch mine lol
I've been kicking around going in on a set of these for a couple weeks now... see your video, aaaand, they're gone! Guess that's what I get for dragging my feet!!
Keep checking back.. they are likely to add more stock to the kickstarter.. they are getting more orders than expected
Hi Eric! Sorry about that, we are experiencing a very high volume of orders right now. The will continue to be listed until the end of the campaign. Best wishes!
@@MMaven Thanks for the heads up - I'm on the pledge list now.
Manfrotto discontinued it's Xume magnetic holders, probably for the same reason. The sure is I lost filters two times with them.
I tried those out when they first came out, they were terrible about getting stuck on filters and breaking and the magnets were never strong enough. That’s why it’s so refreshing to have nice strong Magnets on a set of filters like we’ve
These look great, ive had the same problem with Kase lens caps failing. When my filters die Ill grab a set of these instead of going back to Kase.
Nice review. I am excited for these!
Hey Brandt you’re local camera shop is said to be the first camera store to carry them in retail. Just after Kick Starter backers are fulfilled.
@@travislucas7483 that’s awesome! I know where to go when I need different sizes. Congrats!
Hoping you get a commission off the promotion! I’m still using a screw on B+W but it’s annoying between 3 lenses and set up rings.
Yes that is correct, and would work really well for those with color blindness.
HI Dan! We sold out earlier but I have added some more.& you should be able to add them under the "manage pledge" option. Best wishes! Michael
Keep checking back, I’m pretty sure that they have more supply they We’re just not expecting this much demand
@@NickPage will do! yeah, I'm sure they didn't expect to be ~16,000% overfunded this quickly - ha!
I'm finding the same with Freewell
A really REALLY big requirement for me is that the filters support the standard lens caps. The first brand I bought didn’t and I sent them right back but the Kase filters do allow you to snap on a lens cap. This is important because I found that the magnetic lens cap fell off too easily.
Do the Maven filters support this?
I am not sure. I hope someone can answer this. I know for sure that the Kase filters hold a lens cap perfectly.
I suspect that most will slightly lose their magnetism, that’s part of why this lifetime warranty is such a valuable addition
@@NickPage and what about Case Magnetic Armour filters? They seems to be solid aswell.
@@Fessoid They are made out of the same Materials as the other filters, just a different design for square filters and graduated filters, which in my opinion is not a good Thing.
Just backed the kickstarter. Thanks for putting out this video

Noted thank you.
After feeling around with frozen fingers, I eventually gave up.
...and I see what did there. Looks like the red ring is back in your camera bag 😄
Thanks for sharing Nick
Question: When buying filters should you purchase the largest size filter you need for the lenses you have then use step down rings?
Yes, get the largest filter you need, then use their adapter rings, and leave one on each lens
@@NickPage Thanks, that's what I figured made sense! Have a great weekend....
I've heard good things about the Freewell set.
Thanks for the tip on these Mavens, look great especially the push to codify color performance. Will help the whole industry.
I wonder if your Kase filters demagnetized over time due to the local influence of opposing fields when stored stacked up.
I probably should’ve mentioned this in the video, but I did not store those stacked, I stored them in a pouch separated always
(we've all lost a lens cap at some point.)
4. one less hassle (lens hoods)
I've just about talked myself into it.
Yeah I stopped carrying lens hoods quite a while ago unless it’s for my telephoto lens when shooting wildlife. I just get annoyed with the extra space they take up and how little they do for a wide angle lens anyway
Just have one variable ND. Would be willing to try some. Now that I see the magnets failing...
All the more reason to buy filters with lifetime warranties. The Kase filters came with such a weak magnets to begin with that was a big problem… I won’t ever buy another set of filters without warrantees
I like this, but I need to wait until these have some time on market before I make this jump. For all I know at this point, the magnets will weaken in a year or so on these just like the Kase.
so far so good... zero issues yet
Thanks for the heads-up and honest review as always. I've been in the market for a good set of magnets for a while. Almost bought the kase, but I think I'll give these a try instead.
I didn't realize there was a limited number.... I suggest checking back
@@NickPage thanks Nick. I went back 3 different times and finally got through! Stoked to get these in December.
The only drag about using a one-size system and an adapter ring, is that the lens hood won’t fit over the adapter ring.
You can sell the BW filters on e-Bay and recover some of the original cost.
Looked into purchasing a set, but the site isn’t very user friendly. I can’t figure out how to buy anything.
I lost my Kase lens cap first time out, it fell of without me knowing!
@@jerryinsc yes the lens cap. I was going to replace it but they want £35!!!
Thank you.
yes I believe you can on the 15-35... although personally I never use lens hoods. Not to mention on the 15-35.. they really dont do much at all
Ordered mine a month ago ✅
Good info Nick. Question, I’m thinking they’re made of steel so does the magnet attract dust?
When dropped in sand, they definitely attract magnetite! It’s really common to have grains of black sand stuck to your magnets
Why didn’t you compare these to Freewell?
Looking good those filters. I am still sticking with regular crew on filters cuz i user cpl and 6nd so for me easy to know which is which, also i made marking on filter where to attach for easy to srew on, so for me its perfectly fine. I have good quality filters with coated glass so im solid staying without extra investment, but who knows what future brings :) Thanks Nick for sharing your opinion. Its good to know those exist and you are satisfied with it :) Cheers
Can you use lens hood for 24-70 and 70-200 2.8 while filter is attached? Otherwise it’s pointless.
Yes you can, although I hate and don’t use lens hoods
Missed the Kickstarter campaign! I’ll have to wait. :(
Looks like a great product. Wish i hadn't missed the kickstarter. 😒
Better ring the bell to be notified of future videos!
@@NickPage already a happy subscriber...life just got in the way...
Not for sale yet? Maven are new that's why they don't shift I'm sure the Kase didn't at the start...
actually straight out of the box I would say the Kase filters were maybe 1/3rd or less as strong magnetically.. and they never stacked as tightly
I've lost my Kase polarizer twice because of weak magnets. Luckily, both times I was able to retrace my steps and find it... for the price.... That sucks.
there is now a better way...
I love FLM tripods but do not really care for their current iteration of ballheads.
Hi Tim Michael here yes I have the same ones and use 77 mm MAVENs on them. Were you able to get your survey for that OK?
