And now the question is: will the new Stadler TINA trams also have pedal operation? It is something The Hague is so used to since the PCC cars came in service, starting in 1949... It's kind of like driving a car with automatic gears. So it would be a shock to the system for every HTM driver when they are changing that... That could even be a safety issue in the first few months.
In my opinion, a manual control for accelerating is much more convenient, what's the point of having pedals if after all it's a tram and doesn't have a steering wheel.
@@gwnlars_8306 Manual controls are more ergonomic and are always preferable. If pedals were more ergonomic, trains would have pedals without any sticks. Most trains today use sticks and most trams also use sticks. Many PCC drivers complained of leg pain and back pain.
Reminds me of the old PCC's and CLRV/ALRV's we had in Toronto Now we have new Bombardier (now Alstom) Low floor LRVs that are controlled with a throttle and no pedals.
Thanks, great video! A couple of time you shortly lifted then depressed again the right pedal. Does that have anything to do with a tempomat? Is there tempomat at all on these trams?
It's so nice to be able to neutral by releasing pedals... In all electrical cars I got to know, that just isn't available by default and only some have such possible.
The PCC trams also had foot pedal control, as they did here in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Current trams here are foot-controlled. Do you find these foot controls as comfortable as those on PCC trams?
@@Dontavious-pj3yt A hand controller is much more precise than a controller with pedals, it's a tram, it doesn't have a steering wheel to turn, why have your feet constantly busy and your hands doing almost nothing? Those who drove the PCC often complained of back pain. I absolutely prefer the hand controls, they are much more precise in regulating energy and braking, the feet are more rough and coarse, they work well in a car, not in a tram
The old PCC cars used to have gas & brake pedals. The drive would just hold onto a bar in front of him, which I think had the bell & door controls. 18:39 An intersection such as this would not work in the USA.
The Siemens Avenio - as in this video - uses almost only electric motors, even when motor-braking doesnt work anymore (around 4km/h) it spins the motors in reverse and stops the tram completely electric. But it also has friction brakes, they are required for emergency breaking.
In szech Tatra trams a left pedal lifts magnetic track brakes. Without acting it a tram can't move. To release this pedal on a run it will be an emergency stop.

Just like the APK in the Netherlands. We say "APK Keuring" (Keuring = Inspection), but APK already stands for: "General Periodic Inspection", so we actually say "General Periodic Inspection Inspection" every time. 🤣
@@M1K3NLI sometimes hear people talk about the PIN Number for their ATM card. PIN = Personal Identification Number, so PIN Number is Personal Identification Number Number. (Yes, my name is of Dutch origin. Sadly, ik spreek been Nederlands.)
The grass tramways look so good, a million times better than regular pavement.
They are also great for wheel noise reduction and rain water drainage.
It‘s very astonishing how the Trams accelerate! Thank You for Your interesting Video!
Now, that explains how and why the drivers have their hands free when they go past. Thanks.

Very informative, thanks very much. The rate of acceleration and breaking is quite amazing.
Leuk om te zien

Thank you! 🙏😊 Yes it seems like yesterday that I started this
FANTASTIC VIDEO!!! I was always curious about it
Thank you for the pedals video!
Excellent demonstration, very interesting and unusual.

Yes, the TINA trams will be als have pedal operation.
The RegioCitadis has hand controls, the only one to have that on the whole HTM network.

It is much better to have a system with levers than having foot controls like in the PCC.
Well since they earlier had those PCC trams that also used pedals for driving.

Zou u misschien in de toekomstige video's een snelheidsmeter in de video kunnen monteren?
Good job brother , halo from leyweg
Oh! The pedals click when they start making contact and when lifting! Interesting.
Hope the new trams for Croydon will have pedal operation. Or are the operators brave enough to request this from TfL.
will croydon be getting new trams?
What do you have against manual controls?

Foot-controlled is much more comfortable then hand controlled.

Is the "bell" / horn required at every intersection or is this driver preference? The little short "bell / chime" that you hear.
Yes, trams are often very quiet and a horn is too loud for city use so a "bell" is used to make the tram's presence known to the pedestrians and cars
@@jamesnicolson6833 Oh cool!
Do the brakes on those trams use friction on the tracks, friction on the wheels, or the electric motors? Or something else?
All of the systems you mention, regenerating braking through the motors is first .

How hard you need to press left pedal in order to arm the tram to move?
Very interesting thank you. The left hand pedal you use, is that like a hand brake on a car?
The left pedal is the "dead man's switch", if he presses it to soft or to hard the tram will stop after 5 seconds
What does the extreme left pedal do?..i see u press it before accelerating
Deadmans pedal

Ook stages komen tevoorschijn op werkenbijhtm.nl. Als er geen vacature voor stagiaires open staan, zoeken we op dit moment geen stagiaires :-)
"Pedal" is from Latin "pedes" and translates as "foot". So a foot pedal is a foot-foot. 😉
