High Whitney! I put this on my watch later list so I can watch it again because I need to learn more about my fabrics for the fabrics that are out there! Have a great day and I'm watching this in 2023.
When I sew something I want to only do it once . I do not want to repeatedly strengthen out a crooked hem they do not grow at the same rate. If I spend my hard earned money on fabric I want a quality and stable fabric. Through the years I have seen more fabrics with all kinds of man made materials added. I glad you like to sew with rayon. You have more patience than I do. Thank you for all the information you gave us.
Glad you mentioned rayon grows! The top I’m making, I shortened and wish I hadn’t. This explains why the pjs I hemmed all the sudden Ed got longer...sleeves and pant length. They are a knit rayon.
Great video, enjoyed it immensely Brings back fond memories of a linen blend skirt I made cut on the bias.... Thank you for inviting us into your home, and sharing your experiences with us!! :+)
Back in my early days of sewing, I had the best reference book with samples of every type of fabric known to mankind! And it wasn't a large book. My mind is blow away with all of the new fabrics that continually appear in RTW and on line. This was a good refresher course. Thanks so much for all you do.
Hello sunshine :D And thank you for another lovely video. I just wanted to inform you that there is no difference between bamboo pulp and other rayons. When the bamboo has been broken down into rayon pulp it is no longer possible to trace the original origin of the pulp. So it could be from spruce or what ever. Bamboo has has been sold as many things like for example more breathable and and anti bacterial and so on. But it's just humbug. The benefits the bamboo would have, goes away when the fiber is broken down into rayon. So in Norway it's forbidden to sell things as bamboo rayon because rayon is rayon. It's also extremely hard for the enviroment and it can't be produced in a good way. So it's perhaps something one want's to use less off. But it's a beautiful fabric no doubts. All the best, Kirvil. :)
Thanks Whitney for your awesome analysis of my favorite fiber! I made a few pairs of PJs from rayon knits I got at JA's. They have pilled (I blamed it on friction with the sheets), and they stick together with themselves coming from the laundry (I thought maybe laundry soap residue!). I am so relieved to find out it's just poor quality fabric, which I thankfully paid what it was worth, and not the 'retail' price!
Thank you so much! After dealing with fussy RTW rayon, I didn't want to touch it for sewing. Now I know how to care for it better (pre-wash/dry) and might give it a try.
Great information! You made me smile, when you mentioned about Rayon growing, The first time I ever used Rayon for an A- line skirt....Something must be wrong with the pattern the side seams aren’t matching, it was crazy how much it grew. Never thought it was the fabric I thought it was the pattern LOL
Wow! What a fantastic Vlog this morning! Thank you..thank you...THANK YOU! These monthly fabric learning episodes are so needed especially with the majority of fabric purchases being made online. It is unfortunate that there is not a standard by which online fabric stores must meet when listing a fabric for sale (weight/linear yard, brand name, country or origin, etc.) The terms "lightweight", "medium/heavy weight" are so subjective; I want to know the ACTUAL weight. Also, it would be nice if all online shops offered their fabrics cut to order (ie, 1.25 yards instead of 2.0 yards.) Often times whole yards are the only cut the fabric is offered. I can only make some many pairs of underwear out of my 3/4 of a yard unused fabric!!! I've also been a victim of the "cheaper" ($13.95/yd) Rayon Challis I purchased online two summers ago that I've soaked in vinegar after washing and rinsing many, many times in the washing machine, drying in between, and still it bleeds blue dye! I'm not sure about you, but I don't want to look like a smurf after I've worn a dress made from this fabric!
This video could not be more timely. I just ordered 2 nice yardages of some printed rayon challis and a gorgeous rayon voile print this morning! The heat wave has begun and these will be a mini mix and match coordinated capsule with three peplum tops and 2 coordinating culottes as well as a simple minimal bias dress! I Love how silky and cooling rayon is and have a couple of fine rayon knits in my stash to make some additional tanks. I tend to self line cheaper rayon knits them to stabilize them a bit. Great video and definitely saving for reference. Thanks Whitney!
Enjoying your videos Whitney. I just have to comment I really like the more muted lipstick tones on you with your coloring. The other ones, while fun, were really bright and took focus away from your pretty eyes. Loving all the tips and sew alongs you do for us! Keep them coming and stay well!
Great content 👍 Thank -you ! Yes one really has to be careful as a percentage of polyester seems to be creeping into many fabrics nowadays. TRUE Rayon /Viscose is great for a hot climate as long as there is no polyester.
Excellent, thank you. I have knitted with bamboo yarn only to havs it grow considerably over time. I didn't translate that experience to sewing with bamboo fabric until you mentioned it. Thanks for helping head off future potential sewing tragedies.
I am SO GRATEFUL for this series; and that you've done rayon this time. I have sewn with rayon jersey before (gifts for my mom), but I have never sewn rayon twill before. I am about to embark on a cotton muslin for Pietra pants (view A, cropped) that I will make in rayon twill. Will the pockets be "too much" for the rayon twill? Thanks in advance! I learn so much from you.
Love this! I have a love hate relationship of viscose. Until it is worn you have no idea how well the cheap or expensive viscose performs, been surprised and very dissapointed. Now I just buy from the Textile Centre mid price and look out for their twill or heavy weave and think short term make, if I use the thin stuff.
Morning Whitney, I am bookmarking this video, very informative I did learn a lot about viscose. I wash my fabric when I buy it but I usually air dry it. I have some three meters of viscose and thin I should rewash it and put it in the dryer (definitely food for thought). Great video and thank you for all you do. Have a fabulous weekend. Val ❤️🇨🇦🇬🇧
Excellent video! I’m just getting back into garment construction after quilting mainly for many years. I learnt so much so thank you. New subscriber here.
So glad you mentioned this series in your recent cotton info video. Buying fabric feeling I don’t have enough knowledge has been so frustrating so you are helping me learn so much. SO, How much extra rayon yardage do you buy to account for shrinkage?
If you buy nice quality rayon, I would say just 10% more would be fine. However, I find that most patterns over estimate fabric yardage requirements so I don't usually increase for rayon.
I had some dresses in the 80’s made of Rayon, that I just loved!! I remember I always had to iron with a pressing cloth or they would get shiny and seams allowances would show thru on right side of fabric!!! With all the “problems associated with sewing it-I’m not sure if I’d want to tackle it!! I do love a challis tho-sews beautifully, presses nice and moves like liquid silk!! Thank you so much for these fabric sessions!! I was confused about a lot of new blends!!
Thank You so much Whitney for this valuable information. I’ve just got back into dressmaking after 25 years + .... started with stretch fabrics now I’m getting linen and rayon to experiment with. Thank You
Love going back and learning soooo much. With all the issues of stretch, fraying etc do you recommend serging all the pattern pieces once they are cut out, or do you wait and serge the seams after sewing the garment together? Love all your content. Thank you.
While I will stay stitch necklines, armholes and other curvy areas, I don't serge anything until after the seams have been sewn. The serger can actually pull things out of shape pretty quickly so you really don't want to serge your rayon until the seam has been sewn.
Hi Whiteny, the Rayon Knit you are holding is so pretty. The colors are so cool and confortable looking. What store did you find it. I would make a part of pjs.
Thanks for this series. I'm new to all of this and while I know the difference between a woven and a knit ( HOW the fibers are formed into fabric) I am learning about the fibers themselves. However, there seems to be more to it than just the fiber and how it's made into fabric. You used the term rayon jersey and cotton jersey. Now what is the jersey part? Is it a type of knit? Oh my goodness, there is so much to learn! Can any fiber be woven or knit? Is there a book on fabrics that includes swatches?? If you learn just from trial and error that can be rather costly! I am saving these videos for reference and I so appreciate you taking the time to educate us.
Denise, there is a book and it's called, 'Fabric for Fashion, The Swatch Book'. It's available on Amazon.com and right now it's on sale for approx. $75.00. It is usually $125.00. I love this book. I use it all of the time to decide what fabric I want to use for the project I am working on at any given time. It also has saved me money in that I walk into the store knowing what I want instead of browsing which ends up with me buying all sorts of fabrics that I fall in love with!! I try to buy fabric only for the item I am working on at that time. Notice I say 'try'. It's very hard to pass up beautiful fabrics. I hope this helps you.
I’m so glad this is helpful! Jersey is a knit fabric. It will have a rib in one side (sometimes you have to look REALLY closely to see it) and then a “purl” on the back. It’s knitted like you would knit with knitting needles, just MUCH finer.
Hi! I, unfortunately, bought some rayon that is paper thin. I have not done anything with it, but while listening to this post, I got an idea that maybe if I found an interfacing that had glue on both sides, I might be able to use a double thickness for the garment. I think fusing two pieces of rayon would be problematic. I think you would completely lose the nature of the drape in the fabric. However, you could definitely underline the pattern pieces. You would just cut out two of everything and then baste the pieces together within the seam allowances and then those two layers are treated as one.
@@TomKatStitchery Great idea! Thanks so much! I hadn't thought about the loss of drape by using the interfacing, so thank you for saving me a big disappointment!

Or is using cheaper rayon for the toile the best way to go? Also, I bought lots of rayon first Ponte knits for my stash, but many are blended with poly.😪 I hate poly (I feel smothered wearing it) but was seduced by the colors and price and hoped that with the higher percentage of rayon it would be all right. Also, is there a natural fiber lining with stretch that you could recommend?
I would test your pontes with poly. If there is enough rayon, you might be fine. As far as toiles for rayon garments, I will usually just use the regular cotton muslin fabric. While it won’t be early as drapey, it will give you an idea of the fit (and fit issues are easier to see and diagnose in the sturdier cotton). It won’t look quite right in the muslin fabric, but it will do the job!
Thank you very informative. How would you categorize knit by weight (by oz) for lightweight, medium weight, heavy weight for both cotton & Rayon knits?
That is a great question. Unfortunately, few fabric stores use actual weight so the classification of lightweight, medium weight and heavy weight can become very subjective. I would have to do some more research on exact weights. Rayon’s will be heavier than the cottons weight wise, but might have a similar “thickness.” My favorite online fabric shops will list garments that would be suitable for the fabric and that’s usually what I rely on. For instance, I wouldn’t buy a knit for a pair of leggings that says it’s great for tops.

Thanks for the FYI on ponte to stick with the rayon/nylon/spandex blend, i have stayed away from ponte thinking it was all poly. Great, informative video and the floral pj fabric is beautiful.
They aren’t always cotton, but are typically cotton. They are both really lightweight, but the difference is in the tightness of the weave. Voile isn’t as tightly woven as a lawn. It makes voile a bit more gauzy and more transparent. However, the terms are frequently used somewhat interchangeably quite often.
I try to buy all fabric from European countries, New Zealand, Australia. I stay away from “the countries” that have issues even though the fabric is cheaper.

Yes. They take dyes similar to other cellulose or plant based fibers like cotton and linen.

I wonder about Cupro - it seems to be a pretty heavy and stable rayon fabric. Have you tried it?
I have! It’s actually cotton that goes through the rayon process to make it silkier. It’s lovely to wear!

This is correct. Rayon is weaker when wet.
