My Sanseveria snake plant bloomed today! I've had it for 7 yrs & never knew these plants ever bloomed. I've had them before. After a winter inside & complete neglect, no water...I put it outside in June & bright green stalks with little buds started growing. I looked it up & this may be a show for me to enjoy that I may not see for another decade to come- it's rare! The neglect is a contributing factor apparently. I've never re-potted it so it's bursting out of the pot. I do water it lots outside along with my other plants & if anything, it's over-watered but the whole winter it went without water & close to a heat vent. I never thought it would survive. I do have a green thumb though & surprised I let that happen. The Sanseveria flowers look like little white fireworks. It's beautiful. Hope I'm lucky enough to see it bloom again someday :)
I just got started. Last year a friend gave me a tall dark snake plant. It did so well as I mostly kill plants that I jumped in this year with 3 more. Now I want several more. I like all the different types.
Mary Polk, I started out with one as well. I quickly fell in love with them and started searching for all the different varieties. You’ll be surprised at all the different shapes and sizes. Then you’ll have to start collecting. Best wishes.🌱
You can get the yellow stripe variegation again by putting it in harsher sun regardless of it grew as a cutting or a rhizome division! The variegation is an adaption trick that helps the plant be able to thrive in harsher light by making the leaves less sensitive too direct light by reserving its distribution of chlorophyll
Raymond Anthony I agree Raymond. I got a Snake plant division last Fall and I planted it in cactus soil and placed it in direct sun in a southeast facing window. It didn't really start growing til this Spring but one of the leaves was growing with the green border and lately this border is starting to turn yellow.
My mom gave me a snake plant last year that she had bought from home depot and kept outside it looked like it had been neglected for quite some time in the backyard, I repotted it in a larger container and its doing quite well in my bedroom. I rarely water and it stays quite dry and grows very well. In the beginning I overwatered as I noticed yellow mushrooms started growing on the top soil but the plant lived on, I reduced my watering and it thrived and grew bigger. Now I will say that the snake plants that have the yellow border around the leaves seem to be more sensitive to overwatering because I've had those and end up killing them.
I love sansevierias; they are fascinating. I have about 7 different kinds at this point (I think). My newest ones are a birds nest jade and a masoniana. Good video.
Your mini collection looks great. It's good to know they will grow in very low light places. I think I'll put one in my bathroom that has a small window. Thanks for the idea
+Elona Hartjes keep in mind that in the summer they would like some light outside :) but they will tolerate a low light spot for a long time. They are tough cookies :)
I had the one in my bathroom for a year and a half it did OK but you could see that it wasn't growing much.. I put it outside last summer and it grew amazingly. now it's back in the dark bathroom :)...lol
Hi Bill, I was lucky to have 2 of my snake plants flower outside in the summer. The flower spike was about a foot long and looked like white honeysuckle, lasted about 10 days and the fragrance in the evening was so amazing!! I heard they are fragrant in the evening to attract moths. Thanks, Diane
+PlantzNThings One of the keys to blooming your "snake plant", is to have it (very) be pot-bound. Keep it quite dry, and (if possible), a bit cooler in the winter. The flowers are simple, but rather pretty, and DO smell wonderful. However, the smell can be a bit over-powering in the evening - especially if you have several spikes in bloom.
Hi there, I think the leaf deformity that happened to your largest sansevieria is because the rhizome got curled inside its self on the edge of the pot. Something similar happened to one of mine once, and I noticed that the curled leaf is coming out of where the pot is split open. They may be very easy to take care of but they sure are a pain when it comes to finding a good pot. I got an ancient one from my grandmother before I knew that they were pot murderers and I replanted it in one of my favorite glazed pots... cracked it right open. They are really cool plants though, Id love to get one like the one you said is s. masoniana
I LOVE your Sanseverias Bill and they are a MAGNIFICENT size :-) I haven't got a Sanseveria in my collection but they are definitely one for my future plant wish list :-) Thanks so much for sharing and sending heaps of love and happy growing from Ireland for a fantastic afternoon XXXXX
I have a trifasciata (no yellow) that was a 50¢ clearance at Lowe's when I worked there in 2004. They were going to throw it out if it didn't sell that day. I bought it. Today the tallest leaf is 5'10".
Plants are endlessly intriguing to me. Even a 'simple' fellow like the snake plant has numerous secrets and particularities. In the tropics the tall ones are sometimes used to make impenetrable hedges. Whenever I see a cool looking sansevieria I'm inspired to start a collection but have not as yet. I may be acquiring one today as a friend has asked for help replacing a snake plant that has gotten to big and tall for its location with a more manageably sized croton 'gold dust'. I think in my dotage I would like to be surrounded by a collection of sansevieria in lieu of cats !
I'm a fan of this beautiful plant. I have one with a yellow stripe, but only one leaf. Hope this year it'll produce more growth. I like your sansevieria plants.
I'm a bigger fan than I was before since I saw the article about the Sansevieria being on the list of NASA's top air purifying plants😁in their Clean Air Study.
I just got a rhizome cutting of a snake plant and one leaf on it was tubular and the other one was just coming out so it had a little bit of a curve to it the one that was tubular it was very thick .
I have 2 of these plants......one I have had to put gardening tape around because the leaves are falling over, and some of the stalks have brown on them, either in the middle or the ends and some are split. The other one has some browning on the leaves and some stalks are very bent over. What is the problem? Too much water, not enough? They are both very tall! I'm about ready to chuck them.....
I JUST got a Sansevieria this past week, it is a rescue that had got left out in 5 degrees F, it only has 3 stalks (?) whose color doesn't look so well but it does have a baby division that looks like it is just fine. That stalk on yours looks like it could paddle a canoe. :) When you do your replant video if you could comment on what you know about how they affect the air quality that would be great, I've heard a few things but not in much detail.
I love sans! I have one that's very big and needs repotting. But it's so big I can't lift it. Will it damage my plant if I just leave it in the pot it is in?
if some of the leaves are still attached to the root ball there might be some hope... repot it into some dry soil... take any leaves that rotted at the base but are still firm and make leaf cuttings. Good luck :) I have overwatered a few times and usually some parts survive.
Great tips, my plant was close to my central heating were the pot was hot to the touch and the leaves are curling within themselves, how can I reverse the damage besides moving it?
Snake plants grow like weeds in the ground here in florida and not so slowly with some fertilizer. I know where there is a stand of that giant one growing at the base of a power pole behind my sisters old house in St. Pete. A colony about five feet across and at least four to five feet high getting no extra water and no fertilizer. I intend to go take cuttings.
that's why I bought it... I saw it in the shop and said OMG... and I had to have it.... I'm so happy I did. I treat this plant like my child. it's sits outside of my bedroom and I greet it every morning... I get so excited when I see new growth...
Hi there! Had anyone figured out if the leaf crack was due to under watering? I have a similar crack on my snake plant and can’t figure out why? Thanks!😊🌱
One of my Sanseveirias has a leaky liquid brown spot on it. It releases oil from it if touched. Do you know what this is? Should I remove the leaf or how can I treat it?
It took me too long to figure out how to water my snake plants. I couldn't figure out why mine was getting huge width wise but not growing up. I started to cut back on the watering and tucked it into a corner and it finally started to grow up!
I got a nice small Sansevieria hybrid a few months ago. It's called "Fernwood" after the folks that bred it. It's a bit like S. cylindrica, probably won't grow as tall as that, but mine is on a rampage, putting out a new pup every two weeks. Gotta love a vigorous grower like that!
I’ve had the same yellow margin snake plant for a year and it’s grown nothing. I’ve reported her once and literally I thought she was dying cause there was no root growth since I got her.... so yeah looong growth
you can take cuttings of the golden edged variety and still get the gold. the new plantlets that form have to be along that golden edge though. otherwise rhizomes are the only way
Loved this video! I have 9 varieties and I'm still looking for more. That last one you mentioned, I've only seen it in Asia. Which nursery did you get that big one? Looking forward to the repotting video! I think you've already seen my collection on Instagram :)
Could you elaborate about the stabilized virus that is used to create the variegation? That concept sounds really interesting to me but I'm having trouble looking it up for more information. Thank you!
+valomile You're right... it is hard to find info on the subject. I thought I would for sure find something directly related to snake plants because it's one of the only ones I know of that if you take a leaf cutting the variegation will not come true to the parent. variegation is a virus or mutation in the plant. over time breeders will take a trait and work it and play with it until it's perfect. it's a time consuming process.... some times variegation will disappear and you will get only green growth in the case of Euonymus... you need to remove the green growth to allow the variegated leaves to continue...
Oh man I was just at a nursery yesterday and looked at a S. plant exactly like the one here with the split pot and omg I cannot remember the name it lol...
does anybody here also know if they have had issues with fungas gnats? I would assume no since you have to let the soil dryout between waterings? Also do I need gravel at the bottom for drainage?
Fungus gnats thrive in moist soil... all indoor growers will have some at some point. adding some sand to the top cm of the pot can deter them as well. but dry is the best method... but some plants don't like to be on the dry side
yea ive been trying to see if any pests showed up yet. Its been 2 weeks so far and i find as long as i stick with watering every time the soil dries out its all seemingly good. :)
+Lily Navallo Calara Those are cute! so many types of those as well :) you can either do division or leaf cuttings just like the tall ones. if yours has the yellow stripe and you wish to keep that it would only be division.
I've been looking for some info on potting Snake Plants. I've had some neutral experiences with keeping plants. My main concern is watering to much or under watering plants. Can I use regular potting mix? And how often to water them? I hope this time to improve my skills with keeping plants :(
use a regular potting soil that drains freely... you might need to add some more perlite to the mix if you feel it doesn't drain well... as for watering snake plants... you want to water them well... and then let them dry out completely before you water them again... if you are unsure if the soil is dry... wait another week... it is more common to kill them with over water than underwater... if you put them outside for the summer... then I water mine on a more regular basis. I wouldn't schedule watering on a calendar... watering requirements change with the seasons and light levels...
thanks for he info! Im trying this alll natural soil from walmart. Says it has worm castings? Not sure of its good for snake plants. Seems to be doing well so far.
Cool video. Thanks for posting! I've become a fan of the green-type sansevaria. Have yours ever suffered from cold exposure (in cold rooms)? I recently discovered a light brown/yellow-ish blotch on the newest growths, which I decided to remove and use the green portions for cuttings. Thoughts?
I got my plant from my mother-in-law 46 years ago ,and it came from her mother , I don't know how old it was when she got it from her mother, but its blooming , its lovely .
I just took home a snake plant. When I first took it home it was a beautiful dark green but now the entire plant is turning yellow. I think I may have watered it too much. Any tips on what can I do to help save my plant? Thanks in advance.
+Monique Espinet if you fear overwartering I would remove all of the wet soil from the roots... pot it back up in a very free draining mix... if you notice any squishy or rotted areas remove them and put some intifungal on the area... hydrogen peroxide helps as well as ground cinnamon... but you might need a store bought anti fungal
I like the sansevieria hahnii. Its a variety of trifasciatia that only grows about 6 or 7 inches tall and forms a rosette with lots of offsets. It's commonly called a birds nest plant, but it's also called a mother-in-law's tongue because the leaves are shaped like a tongue that tapers to a sharp point. It comes in solid green or has yellow stripes like the tall trifasciatia. Your plant is trifasciatia, not tricuspidata. Fascia is Latin for stripe or band, so trifasciatia means having three stripes. I don't think there is a tricuspidata.
the hahnii variety is called a Golden Birds Nest but i dont think its ever called Mother In Laws Tongue or Snake Plant, those are the laurentii variety
Jocelyn Sippola - I killed my wonderful sans after my beloved husband died. It survived for 9 months in a dark corner of my bedroom without any watering at all. All my wonderful plants died, and if friends/family were watching me more carefully, they would have helped me with my grief.
My Sanseveria snake plant bloomed today! I've had it for 7 yrs & never knew these plants ever bloomed. I've had them before. So interesting! So I can stop my hunt for the yellow Sansievera. Thank you for the tip!

I just love the combination of dark and light leaves on that plant, such a beautiful contrast. I really prefer that to a uniform look, it's so unique.
I agree... there is something very calming about the pattern
I love sansevierias; they are fascinating. I have about 7 different kinds at this point (I think). My newest ones are a birds nest jade and a masoniana. Good video.
You have such a friendly disposition that it's great listening to you after a long day.
Thank you :)
All of my plants have been impulse purchases... I go for one new one and come home with five...
You are certainly not alone... lol
same here :D
LOL ..me too!
The first plant was a Sansevieria trifasciata :D
Love your videos!
+TheMantisGuy That's the word I was looking for...lol.. trifasciata...lol...
I actually just purchased one of the larger snake plants off of eBay. I'm so excited after watching all your videos lolll
Your mini collection looks great. It's good to know they will grow in very low light places. I think I'll put one in my bathroom that has a small window. Thanks for the idea

There is one species, Sansevieria parva, with the common name "Kenya Hyacinth." It seems to be widely available.

I'm collecting snake plants, I'm a beginner, I have only 7 varieties and still collecting, thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Amazing plants you have there. Hope they're still doing good.
the Sans are still kicking :) I have added to the collection and currently they are outside soaking up the summer sun.
+Desert Plants of Avalon It's often overlooked... but it's a tough plant that perfect plant to add to a collection.. :)
Hey, you definitely have to have one amongst your great collection.
I have a trifasciata (no yellow) that was a 50¢ clearance at Lowe's when I worked there in 2004. They were going to throw it out if it didn't sell that day. I bought it. Today the tallest leaf is 5'10".

I enjoy your clips on orchids. I am still learning how to take of them.
+Lois Fussi There will still be lots more Orchid videos :) I just needed to switch it up a little.

Wife had 20 snake plants few are over 20 years old. On down to about 2 year there maybe like 9 or 10 are in bloom
I love sans! I have one that's very big and needs repotting. But it's so big I can't lift it. Will it damage my plant if I just leave it in the pot it is in?
Hello I over watered my snake plant n 2 leafs fell off so I repot it n the root ball came off can it be saved what should I do ? Thanks 😉👍🏾

Hi. Do you think propagation from cuttings of this mansoniana will work?
Hi Bill, your big leaf Snake is a cultivar named S. 'Vittorio'. It's available at Sheridan.
Crabby Pants hi there is it S. vittoria or masoniana, you think?
I have one of this and it is called elephant ear, because its thicker and has wider leaf. I love it.
I have never seen whale fin that big, I’m drooling 🤤 I just recently got one hopefully it can get that big🦋🦋🦋👍thanks for sharing.
that's why I bought it... I saw it in the shop and said OMG... and I had to have it.... I'm so happy I did. I treat this plant like my child. it's sits outside of my bedroom and I greet it every morning... I get so excited when I see new growth...
Funny I talk to my plants too. I say good morning to them every morning 😁😁
Love your video , You so fun to watch , I fell better any time watching your video . Thanks !
Great video very nice commentary
i like the volume of that snake plants ... i think i need one of that in my living room
How to grow such fuller snake plant? My pot has only one plant with 2 leaves. How to make it fuller?
Was the snake plant watered sparsely because it was in low light setting? If placed in brighter light would it need more water?
Here in Brazil it´s called Saint George's sword and Saint George's spear!!!
How long did it take for your snake plants to get this high
whale fin? wish i had a cutting
It took me too long to figure out how to water my snake plants. I couldn't figure out why mine was getting huge width wise but not growing up. I started to cut back on the watering and tucked it into a corner and it finally started to grow up!

Hi, hope you don't mind my asking why you waited so long to repot the plant that is busting through the pot? Is there a particular wait time?
+Ericka NYC it's mostly do to not looking at the pot... it lives in that pot cover.
I’ve had the same yellow margin snake plant for a year and it’s grown nothing. I’ve reported her once and literally I thought she was dying cause there was no root growth since I got her.... so yeah looong growth
nice video! i love plants! and you're so fun to watch! :)
+Tracy Amor Thank you :)
Very interesting facts! Glad I tuned in!
you can take cuttings of the golden edged variety and still get the gold. the new plantlets that form have to be along that golden edge though. otherwise rhizomes are the only way

Yes I've seen your collection. .. it's awesome :) I got the big one from Belgium nursery near kitchener.

What is the difference with Dracerna and sancevera and snake plant.
Snake Plant is a Sansevieria and a Dracena Has a Trunk with leaves.
Oh man I was just at a nursery yesterday and looked at a S. plant exactly like the one here with the split pot and omg I cannot remember the name it lol...

How much was your whale fin sansevieria?! And how much was the mother plant? Gorgeous!
I think I paid 30 dollars for mine maybe 5 years ago... there as a slightly bigger one for 50... but the mother plant was not for sale..
where did you get that giant Sansevieria!!!! I'm just getting into them now I only have two but I need the large one! it's amazing!
i love your sansevierias plants i have some varieties,i have the birds nest variety and that is my favorite how can i propagate those? thanks...
+Lily Navallo Calara Those are cute! so many types of those as well :) you can either do division or leaf cuttings just like the tall ones. if yours has the yellow stripe and you wish to keep that it would only be division.

Dang those things are huge! And if you add a panther in the background, you can have a jungle!
+Baotran's Botanicals lol.. A Panther... Can you imagine..lol
Bill, check roots of the third sansevieria (the one with deformed leaf) when you repot it - it's possible the plant has mealybugs on them.
I will check that... the area this plant is in has never had noticeable bugs... but you never know
I have two varieties , the long one flowers every year , twice a year .
Super....love your Chanel...and more
Great vid! 😍👏
And your really good with your plants
+Caleb Rich Thank you :)
Here in Thailand people plant them on the sidewalk planting strip.
Looks very nice plant
I love it. Subscribed.
This plant is a succulent? I have had this grown from roots one time
I would place it in the succulent group... it's kind of a grey area. it has thick leaves and it tolerates heat and lack of water.
p.s. love this plant because it is quite elegant with its lines..😁😁😁😁😁😁😁
how do I send you as pictures of my mothers n Law's plant's😊
Cool video. Thanks for posting! I've become a fan of the green-type sansevaria. Have yours ever suffered from cold exposure (in cold rooms)? I recently discovered a light brown/yellow-ish blotch on the newest growths, which I decided to remove and use the green portions for cuttings. Thoughts?
how do I send you a picture😊
+Desiree Evans do you use Facebook? Send photos to plantznthings

Just got one today! It's quite small still, but it's alright
The third one is a Bantel Sensation or Silver Siam
Nice plant I heard that if it gets to big you can cut all the tips off of the snake plant and the leafs will stop growing 😀

Thank you!
Great video. Thanks now I want one lol
Thank you for the information! Very useful indeed. I learnt a lot from the comments section too as well as the video!
That banana in the back, though! Dang!! @_@
+EanTxelan The Red Banana seems to be growing better now that I added a few more lights :)
My plant is not growing from 3 months but it is fresh and healthy
My gosh your snake plants are so long
It's a Whale Fin sir
I think it is a whale fin
I just killed my sansevaria... I loved it to death. Water every 2 weeks was way too much for it.
Oh no :( they don't seem to like a schedule.
Jocelyn Sippola - I killed my wonderful sans after my beloved husband died. It survived for 9 months in a dark corner of my bedroom without any watering at all. All my wonderful plants died, and if friends/family were watching me more carefully, they would have helped me with my grief.
