  • Top Thrill 2: The Perfect Coaster Sequel? Creating a good sequel is hard. In the case of film, the sequel must first build on the original movie but also raise the stakes even higher so as to be a satisfactory second entry. But what about a sequel to a coaster? Particularly one that’s as iconic as Top Thrill Dragster? Is its sequel Top Thrill 2 a worthy successor? And does Top Thrill 2 improve upon Top Thrill Dragster, while creating its own coaster experience that sets it apart from the original Top Thrill Dragster?
    Chapters:
    0:00-0:40 Intro
    0:41-2:42 Top Thrill Dragster
    2:43-4:56 The Hydraulic Launch
    4:57-9:00 Top Thrill 2 vs. Top Thrill Dragster

      I think it's great. The 3rd launch is my favorite because it captures the original ride perfectly, and the fact that they kept the "keep arms down, head back, and hold on" on the starting lights is a flawless execution, like Chef's kiss beautiful.

      We shall see about that, Let's wait and see what SIX FLAGS Magic Mountains New Coaster in 25 will be, before you say 'By far'.
      MAGIC MOUNTAIN is 1 Coaster, and an upgrade away from Beating out Cedar Points Lineup. We already have X2, TATSU, TWISTED COLOSSUS, WONDER WOMAN, Tallest Single Rail coaster Not to mention we've got the World's 2nd Tallest DROP TOWER. TALLER than Cedar Points Drop Tower by at least 50 feet or more.What Magic Mountain does not yet have is a Dive Coaster, or Giga, and that will eventually make its way over, but due time.
      TOP THRILL 2 TOP Hat does Put SUPERMAN to shame, from more of a Speed and Trajector Airtime standpoint but I don't necessarily think that you go up much higher on the Top Thrill 2 spike than you do on Supermans Tower. The Total height of TOP Thrill 2's spike may be 420 feet, but you don't reach the Top if your in the front seat, despite getting the best view. Because Superman doesn't use a Traditional Train, it's more of a car, you do go up higher than what you witness in person for Off Ride footage. TOP Thrill 2 I'd definitely wait for for a 2 hour wait, where's Superman I would not, but that spike doesn't look much taller, nor is it than the entire Superman/Lex structure is all I'm saying.

      You can definitely make the argument that Hershey's top 5 are as good as Cedar Point's, if not better. TT2 would have been an enthusiast's dream with ejector airtime pops on the launch and brake run, but CP wasn't going to work with Intamin to make that happen.

      @@williampavichevich4877 I don't think Magic Mountain will add anything huge. A mid-sized B&M Wing coaster with just 1 or 2 inversions would be fantastic at rounding out their lineup and moving some crowds from X2.

    I rode Top Thrill Dragster for the first time in 2019 and it was an experience like no other rollercoaster i rode beforehand. My plan is to hopefully go to Cedar Point in 2025 to experience Top Thrill 2 because i want to avoid the Fast Lane Plus limitations Cedar Point has established on Top Thrill 2 in 2024. I'm sure I'll like Top Thrill 2 over Top Thrill Dragster because it offers more.

      Yeah, Top Thrill Dragster was so amazing. TT2 has a lot to live up to

  • @brianfoss571
    @brianfoss571 Месяц назад +1

    Also, I think we'll judge the long-term success of TT2 by the quality of CP's next thrill coaster(s). If they can combine the Corkscrew site and former dorm plot, then we could be looking at a Vekoma family-thrill about the size of Big Bear Mountain. That's the type of ride CP needs in their lineup to close CCMR for good and potentially build a GCI on that site and the island.

  • @brianfoss571
    @brianfoss571 Месяц назад +1

    How "worthy" TT2 is really depends on what you consider thrilling. A bit of rattling from the train, launching backwards, reverse floater air, and extra ejector air over the top hat can make up for weaker launches. But ultimately, Cedar Point only did what was necessary to keep the structure of Dragster operational. The reverse spike is 420 feet tall because Zamperla couldn't guarantee 120+ mph on their trains with 2 launches, so a high-speed reverse element was necessary.
    IOW, we don't have any new track that is added ONLY to deliver new thrills. Adding the spike and switch track is akin to removing the loop from Son of Beast. Replacing the hydraulic launch with LSMs is on par with replacing Lightning Rod's launch with a fast chain lift. All of these changes were *required* to keep these coasters from closing. Because of this, I don't consider TT2 to be a separate credit from Dragster. It's simply the difference between Dragster existing in some form or not at all. And if the best you can say about this incarnation is a longer ride time, that's still good enough for the GP.

    I still say the original Dragster was sabotaged. Six Flags, before the merger was always jealous of the kind of love and respect Cedar Point had, even though they had a taller strata coaster in Kingda Ka. And one day, they had enough, and decided to try and destroy Dragster once and for all. So they sent one of their maintenance guys to act as a spy for them, and once it was an optimal time, the spy did something to sabotage Top Thrill Dragster, causing the fateful accident that shut down the entire ride. Coincidence? I think *NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!* Didn’t work, of course. Cedar Point went to work in transforming it into Top Thrill 2.

    TTD set a height record. TT2 easily could have done the same, but they opted for the equal height noncompetitive approach. To save money, they could have done much less. They are just flaunting a new attitude. I don't like it.

      I was expecting a 200ft spike personally, so pleasantly surprised

    • @PhoenixTTD
      @PhoenixTTD Месяц назад

      @@JakeCoasters I could tell from the footer it was going way past 200 feet. It was huge like the original tophat footer. So obviously it had to be a record because why build to just 400. Dumb right? I guess they could build just 36' shy of a record.

    • @brianfoss571
      @brianfoss571 Месяц назад

      @PhoenixTTD Five points on that. First, a backward launch to 130 mph wouldn't set a height record for the entire train. You'd only top Kingda Ka sitting in the back. Cedar Point only used a shuttle coaster to break a record with Wicked Twister, and that was just to one-up Six Flags Worlds of Adventure. A spike doesn't have a corresponding element on Kingda Ka, so it's pointless to beat a full-circuit top hat with one.
      Second - and probably most important - you want the ride to hit its top speed on its final launch. Doing otherwise is anticlimactic and hurts the ride's pacing. 101 mph was chosen because it BARELY beats Superman: EFK's launch speed up a vertical tower while enabling riders to feel **some** acceleration on the last launch.
      Third, there is nothing "easy" about adding a coaster element that's over 400 feet tall. Especially on a Great Lakes peninsula that routinely gets heavy winds at those heights, which must be factored into ride ops. So you only build a structure that's as tall as it needs to be for safety margins. If TT2 has a rollback on its 3rd launch AND cascading failures in its brakes, then the train can safely cycle backwards without clearing 420 feet. Sure, that's probably a 1 in 10 million scenario, but CP has experienced blackouts before. It's a contingency they absolutely need to plan for.
      Fourth: Two punchy launches and airtime hills on the launch track would have been more thrilling than a spike that's 50 feet taller than the top hat. But Cedar Fair was only going to work with Intamin on overhauling Xcelerator, so CP has a ride that's more GP-friendly. Not a bad thing at all since they have Maverick and SteVe, while Knott's doesn't have anything like them in their lineup.
      Lastly: *"Tallest and fastest triple launch coaster"* is easier to market than *"Tallest reverse vertical spike"* is. You don't want to use 'thoosie jargon in ads if you can help it.

    • @PhoenixTTD
      @PhoenixTTD Месяц назад

      @@brianfoss571 You can make the spike as high as you want and get the train as high as you want. You can claim a record for whatever you want too. They could have beat Falcons Flight too. There is no law that says the last hill has to be the highest or that there needs to be a 3rd launch or there cannot be a trim. Highest and fastest triple launch coaster is a bogus nuanced record especially since a higher and faster triple launch coaster is nearing completion. Highest rollercoaster regardless of if it is track, part of train, or all of the train is a real marketing opportunity. I am not saying it is easy to build a record. I am saying that if they were willing to do so, this is the easiest and cheapest opportunity. So that means they are just not willing. And it is a little sad considering they were willing to go high but just did not want a record. It is just representative of different attitude of new management. It was not impossible to put a 500'+ foot spike on there. They just did not do it. Best ride would have been 115mph first launch to a real rollback, backwards higher than Falcons Flight, only a 3rd launch if necessary due to terminal velocity, and a trim on the top of the tophat to regulate overspeed and enhance the airtime. It helps if the trim is on the top rather than before the top. Granted, they did more than they had to with this ride. But they went out of their way to say they don't want records anymore, and still put a BS record in their marketing.
