.....MDM was capable of doing this kind of crossover. HE could do it. With a voice like that, he did also the prologue in Il Pagliacci. Just to please himself and his audience. Remarkable! A great artist. Mi piace moltissimo
He is not very good here. His voice is not flexible enough. A "low" tenor has a dramatic voice, a high baritone has a lyrical voice, that is a big difference.

MDM was not just one of the last, but one of the very few true operatic artists who ever lived. No such thing as a concert performance for these people. It's always drama, a revelation of character. Even in an aria from a part he never sang complete - indeed, a part that's not for his voice at all - and even far from his best vocal form, MDM delivers absolutely compelling performance here. Not just a singer singing an aria. An artist singing *and* acting a character. Fabulous stuff! Alas, an extinct species in the last - how many? - five decades.
I do agree with this statement!!! That to me is what made Del Monaco shine. Of course his voice was like a booming cannon of majesty, but what made him so stunning was his acting. And this is something that I think many young singers can learn from today. Opera isn’t just singing on stage. You are an actor playing a character. Your facial expressions, the positions of your hands and feet, your clothes, your overall energy can absolutely make or break the impact of your performance no matter how beautifully you sing. And Del Monaco, well…he could be a part of the Royal Shakespeare Company! He was such a genius!

Magnifico! I saw MDM live at the old Metropolitan Opera House in 1957 or 1958 in Otello with Tebaldi. Many of his recordings did not do him justice. He was magnificent live!

I think he was questioning his decision to sing this aria during this performance. This aria is ridiculously difficult, and even del Monaco is pushed to his limits. The endurance required for this piece is absurd. Especially for a heavier voice. These little jumps between chest voice and passaggio towards the end are just brutal: "sono il factoTUM della citA, sono il factoTUM ..." - - listen closely, even the TENOR del Monaco struggles.
@@pupulique Yes. the tessitura killed him - he is a tenor after all. This aria is brutal, except for excellent lighter baritones or world class heavier baritones.
The problem isn’t really the tessitura. Lyric baritone tessitura isn’t that much lower than a dramatic tenor’s. It’s more that by this point of his career, his voice was just out of alignment. He is singing too masky and not dark enough here, and that’s what’s contributing to the passaggio issues towards the end of this piece. He is also sometimes trying to overdarken some of his La la la’s at the lower end of his voice, but not always. So he is technically inconsistent. I don’t think he would have had problems with this aria in the 50s.
@@hanslick3375 Absolutely. But if anything, I think it would be easier for him if he transposed the aria upwards. To my ears, he’s finding the lower sections too low. The High Gs and As are like safe-havens for him. He was a tenor at the end of the day!

Much as I love MDM, this is not a good performance from him. The words were unclear and slur, and while the voice is still impressive, it is... strange. I guess he is still recovering at this stage, but still...
He is having trouble singing this. The consonants are mashed up and the vocal line is explosive and everywhere and it's very interesting , maybe he was having trouble breathing? Still, amazing flow

Check out his later version of largo 1969, one of the interpretation!!! 4:20 he cleared his throat, so my version is proved! Year early he sang so powerful on Eurovision contest, but still, singing a baritone aria and after accident was very difficult!!!
Interpretacion horrible.....tono atenorado..... mal fraseo...agilidades deficientes. La peor version de esta aria..... escrita para baritono. Incomparable a Prey, Bastianini, Nucci, etc o cualquer baritono de renombre. Del Monaco era un gran tenor, mas como baritono ...bastante sufrible.
I saw the young Magomayev in TV. It was in ~1974. He sang Largo al factotum like Bastianini or Nicolae Herlea. Unfortunately, he later changed his interests and began singing light repertoire. Sopot Festival in the late 1970's is a sample. After that I have not heard him again until he died. Very sad.

En cuanto al exito de esta opera fue siempre enorme sin necesidad que del Monaco la cantara. Y no me gusta como la canta, y adoro su Otelo, su Pollione, su Cavaradossi, etc. Fue un grandisimo tenor dramático.

That’s what I thought in the opening bars. And by the end he was physically exhausted.

Much as I love MDM, this is not a good performance from him. The words were unclear and slur, and while the voice is still impressive, it is... strange. I guess he is still recovering at this stage, but still...

He is having trouble singing this. The consonants are mashed up and the vocal line is explosive and everywhere and it's very interesting , maybe he was having trouble breathing? Still, amazing flow
It’s just too low in his voice. Sounds wrong.

giampierone010 Penso che il caro Giampierone non facesse riferimento alla nota di per se ma al fatto di averle tutte dello stesso colore e volume e intensità. Questo è molto raro in un tenore se non inesistente oggi o giorno. Nel caso di del Monaco si nota ancora di più perché essendo scuro di sentono tutti i colori dal basso all’alto e a lui non cambiano. Uguaglianza vocale al limite dell’impossibile e qui è già il 1966...notasi
@@EJR3MDM non è inesistente. Basta avere la tecnica giusta e ogni nota ha la stessa intensità, lo stesso colore e la stessa posizione. Io sto studiando con questo obiettivo

Тут он уже не совсем молод и после аварии голос его претерпел неприятные изменения, плюс - не его репертуар, драматический тенор поёт о веселом и жизнерадостном Фигаро, но Марио всё равно прекрасен!

He is singing very constricted here sadly. A lot of valsalva, also the words are very slurry.
Bah, it is not your business, pal! It was a post accidential time! Yes, Monaco was not with his best, like everybody accustomed to his powerful voice. Check out his later version of largo 1969, one of the interpretation!!! 4:20 he cleared his throat, so my version is proved! Year early he sang so powerful on Eurovision contest, but still, singing a baritone aria and after accident was very difficult!!!

Interpretacion horrible.....tono atenorado..... mal fraseo...agilidades deficientes. La peor version de esta aria..... escrita para baritono. Incomparable a Prey, Bastianini, Nucci, etc o cualquer baritono de renombre. Del Monaco era un gran tenor, mas como baritono ...bastante sufrible.

I saw the young Magomayev in TV. It was in ~1974. He sang Largo al factotum like Bastianini or Nicolae Herlea. Unfortunately, he later changed his interests and began singing light repertoire. Sopot Festival in the late 1970's is a sample. After that I have not heard him again until he died. Very sad.

@@juancarlosbelletti2483 Paso por alto su descortesía y le envío alguno de los muchos baritonos que cantaron el Largo al factotum : Bruscantini, Battistini, Bastianini, Nucci, Milnes, Merril, Quilico,Prey, Spagnoli, Mattei, Warren... todos excelentes. En cuanto al exito de esta opera fue siempre enorme sin necesidad que del Monaco la cantara. Y no me gusta como la canta, y adoro su Otelo, su Pollione, su Cavaradossi, etc. Fue un grandisimo tenor dramático.

Sad - the one time is terrible vocal and physical overacting actually works is this aria song and yet here he fails again. Not his best performance of this aria. When he was in costume, he did better.
