The ability to add in the national team players mid save would be game changing, I messed up the start to my save but I am not ready to quit it just yet.
I expect that would be quite a significant bit of work and a significant change to how the database is calculated. I guess it could work in the same way as add/remove leagues, but could get complaints about the time it might take to rebuild all the database bits it builds at the start of the game every season break, especially from players on lower spec hardware.
I did what you did at the end. Italian Legacy save starting in Serie C with only Italy playable. I added all the leagues on the main page as viewable, with 2nd league for top 5, and included 5 African teams, Japan and Serie D. Gave me roughly 80k players, but after 1st year I totally see the difference in scouting. My typical was top 5 1st and 2nd league playable about 40k. Saw zero difference in performance when going to twice as many players. Thanks so much for the video, I feel FM just got alot better for legacy saves.
Great timing 😃 I've been thinking about starting a new save recently and also what setup to use. Seems like it's more important to load the players than actual leagues, especially since I'm more of a 1 club guy.

i will play fm 24 for the first time and this video extremely helpful. thanks man. uşakspor career waiting me!
This should be must watch for every single FM user ! I do not need tactic videos, scouting tips, none of that ... 20 years on the game makes u adept at that stuff , real quick... This is a godsend!
I cant for certain say this is because of the settings, but with a large amount of players available and a limited amount of leagues loaded, transfer activity, especially for selling players seems to be a lot harder as there is an oversupply on players and a shortage on active clubs
One thing you not taking into account is those things affect your playing experience. Basically the more leagues you have the better chance for transfers to them . And since transfers to better leagues are bread and butter for crap leagues , this changes playing experince.
Yep, that's what I was going to say. Not loading leagues puts them at a disadvantage and your active league will become very overpowered in the long run (because they are most active in the transfer market and develop players better).
@@DartyGamess when you add/remove leagues, it only activates/deactivates the league at the end/beginning of that season. So, you wouldn't be able to just activate them for the transfer windows. I've heard recommendations to add or remove leagues if you're moving to that country in a journeyman etc, but I don't know the effects of having a league loaded only sometimes
I needed this desperately. I started losing my mind last night when I noticed how often I was staring at a spinning continue screen. I really need some game speed in my life.
The only issue I have with having only one playable nation is lack of competition when it comes to transfers. With multiple nations loaded, players seems to have more interest in them and are sometimes harder to sign with additional interest. Do you know how view only leagues impact on the interest of players?
view only is a small impact and should be used in all leagues in my opinion, takes 1min extra of simulation and you can see the leagues and gets a bit of transfer movement.
the problem with not siming leagues is the clubs beeing mostly inactive afaik, like if you want to sell or loan out a player the more leagues are loaded, the more offers will come. this was especially the case with china in my experience. another point to mention is that when adding leagues midsave, the game will create regens for those teams, so i remember addin a league when i was 2-3 seasons in a save and now there was like a new 27 year old regen at PSV who was just as good as messi and german, i mean its kinda weird i guess
Remember the only long term problem is managers and staff. FM needs an option to load staff from countries as well. You could load every player in the database but if you only have 1 league playable no other teams will replace staff as they retire or leave from expired contracts. Example say you manage in Spain imagine Champions league matches against England and German teams while they have 100% players but like 2 staff members and often no managers. This happens pretty quickly even like 5 years into the future and you can see the difference. The other problem i if you manager in a lesser Country/Division all the staff you will be able to hire will be awful long term . Not a problem if you are doing an English save. But imagine say doing a Denmark or worst nation, save and even 20 years into the future your scouts will probably have 10 scouting. So unfortunately if you are managing in Europe in a long term save you need custom database and top 5 leagues as playable to allow them to replenish their staff. And maybe even the top 5 North/South American top divisions playable again for their staff. Their staff will be superior to any nation outside of top 5 Europe and as a small nation/team you will actually be able to afford these staff members. English Prem is a lot easier to win against in the future when they have 0 staff even with world class players. I hope SI is aware of the issue and solves it with the Unity Engine in FM25.
i normally play 1 save per year so im so annoyed at learning this when im 12 years into my save because i love having players generated worldwide and i noticed this issue a week or two ago. I noticed in my beta save and current save that Senegal particularly had some solid newgens in the first couple years but could never find any afterwards. I checked Senegals youth intake every year on the 'World transfers' tab and they literally had like 8 years of 0 player intakes. Without loading in a bunch of extra Senegalese players to begin with who then retire in a smooth spread over the years, the game isn't triggering generation of newgens consistently - only a handful once every 5 years or so.
@@MiliakBR I think you have an advantage on the AI who won't find wonderkids as easily as you can. There are a ton more wonderkids from a wider spread of countries, for example I got one from Burkina Faso for 90k and sold for 50m
I do a mixture of this. The league I play in plus the top 5 or 10 European leagues. This also affects staff appointments. I used to do view only for all leagues but realised its rather pointless. There are so many setups but it depends on your cpu. Oh and match detail! Uses multi core a lot using full detail so you can turn it to minimum in the menu.
what is bugging me with a low amount of leagues is the lack of realism and the decomposition of teams in unplayable leagues. Teams don't change their manager, are less active on the transfer market and the squads age and shrink. The one dream about fm that I have is selecting everything plus custom leagues while everthing runs smoothly (I know, I know but a man can dream)
Great video I found out about doing this method from you in FM22 and have done it since thank you for saving my Laptop from exploding! Do you think in the future you’ll do a follow up to the loading in players from leagues where they are view only alongside the original db setup to see if it is a viable option when making a save would be super intrigued about having that when starting up a new save😃
There is something about this that nibbles at my brain. With the leagues on such low levels of detail, does that not seriously impact the transfer activity of the affected clubs? Potentially, this could make hoarding WKs an incredibly easy task, if the non-loaded teams are not sufficiently aggressive in their transfer dealings. And a side effect of making the league incredibly efficient to load might be that the game becomes... let's be honest, laughably easy. Which I would hope is not what people want out of a save. Especially something like a climber or build-a-nation save.
It does mean there's less activity. But I load the top 5 leagues and everything else on view only. Then I load players with high reputation from every continent.
You know how some people have a punchable face, well this guy has the most amazing legend face ever. Thanks bro great presentation. Simple, easy to understand, and still detailed. Also just under 10 minutes so it is very digestible.
How does this affect the likes of transfers out of the club? And what about youth players that get loaned out? Will they actually be able to play games, etc?
They're more likely to in a playable league than a view league I expect as the detail of the game simulation is much higher. View only or otherwise and it is pretty much random. If you want your players to develop on loand you need to try to send them to playable leagues if possible.
Really good video. But I wondered why I felt a bit dizzy and nauseous, then I noticed the camera movement when you touch you desk. Just wanted to share that, doesn't take away from the quality of the information, explanation and all.
I think only having one playable nation is a mistake even if you are only planing on playing on that nation. I am pretty sure all the other nations/leagues will fall behind massively over time
Thanks for the vid and tips :) 4 months later, have you made any experience in regards of loading the the divisions in advance and keeping the leagues on view only?
When leagues are not loaded, it helps develop youth players when sent on loan to teams in these leagues. Evidence Based Football Manager YTuber ran simulations on this.
Hey Matt, hugely appreciate this video! I'm about to start a save with Polonia Warsawa in Poland's third tier. I've been following your MTK save over on Twitch and would love to know if the two playable leagues were kept to Hungary and the custom DB was used in the Twitch stream, please. Given you're almost 10 years into the save now I'm curious to know how it's panned out for you!
This is rather interesting. I've tended to add the top leagues playable and then large database with all top players etc as you've done. I've just finished a season with every player (456k!) and every league (top 8 only playable from 2nd/3rd divisions, view only below, the rest view only). It hasn't been too bad on my system speed wise, though it can chug between games at times. I plan on making a new save at some point anyway (the first save is usually only to try to the new features, etc really), so will probably go with your setup and your suggestion of adding players from view leagues. and see how it goes.
One question - the understanding I have is that the higher level of detail a league has, the less the game typically relies on a team's base reputation to determine future league positions, and generally the more competitive those leagues become in continental competitions. For this reason I usually try to load as many leagues as view-only/playable as possible (pre-Armageddon). Do we think that loading top league players will generally offset that issue as the game actually has regens to determine a team's performance rather than just the team's reputation?
More detail means it simulates the results in realtime along with the games in your league you play in. So the time it is spinning the ball each day, it will be playing those games effectively. Hence why lots on playable slows things down, it effectively has to play every game from those leagues every day you move time on.
To speed up the game with several leagues loaded. You can set the game to run all the leagues you arent playing in to minimal details. Makes for alot less processing. And who really cares who wins La Liga anyway if you are playing in Germany.
Just tested this again across 10 years. Unfortunately it really doesn't seem to work very well. I had the top 7 leagues loaded and the exact database you used. After simming 10 years I found that every club in one of the 7 loaded leagues would have a youth intake every single year. However, if they got relegated to the non loaded league below then they would suddenly get no youth intake. The leagues that weren't loaded at all were a complete crapshoot. Some teams would have a youth intake every year. Others would have one every few years. Others wouldn't have any at all and ended up with no actual players. There didn't seem to be any rhyme or reason for this, it was seemingly random. This left some of the teams with the strongest youth recruitment systems in the world generating no youth players while their neighbours, who were worse, would generate newgens. This just made the newgens super unbalanced across nations. Some would get stud newgens from the best teams in their league while others would get garbage players because only the bad academies generated players for their nation. I am going to retest using the loading specific leagues option you mentioned.
I all way add all leagues to view only, I like looking at the league tables time to time not toooooo fused about the grayd out players yes it dose a bit spoil it just a touch, but thanks for the few good ideas. I’m forever starting again I’m doing a level 20 English save I all ways forgetting something lol 😂
I'm an absolute sucker not wanting to have more than one league active, even when I only intend on managing in the one league and this usually pushes my db numbers far too high when using custom options. Going to try it this way with a single league (Slovakia) and see how it goes using your optimal setup. Cheers!
lack of leagues active hurts your ability to shift players on to some degree, especially if you're reliant on selling the promising youth you develop. No matter what league you manage in you probably should have the premier league at least active, as that league/country a) generates the most potential wonderkids and b) pumps the most money into other leagues by far (in real life, the premier league spent more than the other top 5 leagues combined).
Hey.. I watched your video about how to set up a huge database by adding continents and regions only from the advanced database settings, without adding any nations in the nations and leagues section. I understand that if you do not add any countries to the countries and leagues, your players will not receive any transfer offers. After starting the save and adding 4-5 playable countries from the add and remove league section, transfer offers started pouring in for my players. Has anyone else experienced this? When this is the case, setting up a game without adding countries and leagues at the beginning of the game seems like a waste.
My biggest unanswered question is how do you setup an advanced game while choosing your manager from the start? If i do a quick game then i replace Rooney at BCFC, but if i choose them and do advanced it them doesn't let me take control as there is a manager in place. its been like this since at least 21.
Are the foreign league loan out players benefit from the loan when you dont load the league ? Right now I tend to load top 2 playable league from top country in Europe so they can fixtures when I loan them out to France(Ligue 1 & 2) , German (Bundesliga, B2), Holland(Eredivisie, Keukeun), Italy (Serie A and B), Spain (Laliga 1 &2)
please guys help me. I can only view the score line after the match has been played. I literally view just the highlight of every match and not the match itself. what am I doing wrong?
Just load up whatever you want and use cheat engine on x4-6 You can run 30+ leagues from 20 nations with 200k of players easily . Been doing this since the CM days
One question: If you choose to play with 100K players database, is it also going to influence how smooth the 3d game works during the matches or only the “menus”, days processing and etc are being affected?
Hey Matt! Great video. I have a little problem with the setup-file you offered for download. I put it in the db_setup folder, but it does not show up, when I hit load in game. Any Ideas?
I’ve noticed since using this setup in a save with Troyes, that I’m having hard time to loan/sell players outside of France.. Not paying to much attention to loan regulations I now sit with a bunch of talents that I was thinking of shipping on loan, but can’t seem to find any appropriate team out of France? (7players already loaned to French teams)
It seems awful, managing in england only and countries like france haven't got a world class youth prospect in 9 years since the save started, whole international squad is in their 30's. Next long term save I'll just load all top leagues again like normal.
I forgot to in my beta save to put in all the way down to forth tier in spain so missledande out seeing how my Sevilla B team end of in their table. Next season I have tho the Leagues. I was not suprised rhat view only is a little broken
When setting up like this I’m not getting all youth international teams (no u18s or u23s) my previous setup with all leagues loaded has these teams. Am I doing something wrong ?
I did the same experiment and the one league with all leagues as View Olnly is MUCH slower that just the playable league by itself! Almost twice as long!!
Will you get the proper amount of regens when you play with an advanced database? Say you play the game with a League 1 side and want to sign regen wonderkids in the future. Is that realistic with few selected leagues and a hign number of players selected in the advanced database?
The point of selecting all the extra players with the advanced database, is that the game has to produce more regens to keep the database size balanced. Thus you'll actually get a lot more regens!
Thank you for the video and advice and all the comments which are super helpful. I’m very old school and first ventured into football manager with Championship Manager 97/98 which no doubt was detriment to my school performance! Can anyone please recommend a football manager game where it’s kinda old school as in buy/sell players, pick the team and off you go. Any advice on this would be most welcome.
There is a version of FM that is more scaled down. In both database setup, day to running of the club and less of the media stuff. It was called FM touch at one point I think and might still be. Used to sell together but sperate now I believe.
ok, but what about the depth of detail? At what level should I set it so that the game is relatively smooth, does the depth of detail setting have any significant effect on the speed of processing or is it more of a player database?
The more leagues playable the slower it will be. It goes in the following order of slowness from fastest to slowest: not loaded, view only, playable/view only, playable. The size of the database and number of players has an impact too, but the leagues have the most effect as the higher the detail the more games you're asking the game to calculate everytime you click continue. I'm not sure how much FM makes use of multi-core CPUs and lots of memory however and whether this plays a part. I'm also not sure if they're leveraging the GPU for compute performance either (much faster generally than any CPU will be).
I play on FM21 for the moment, is that the FM that has the issue with not creating enough regens with this custom database? If not I will be trying it straight away!
I believe it was FM21 that had this issue, but it was game wide at the time not specific to this setup. However i believe there was a patch mid cycle that was supposed to fix it. So if you haven't noticed any issues with it in your saves then this should work fine for you too :)
Ok bro , i would like to ask something here, how can you make FM fun, coz with me if i pick a top team i win everything in 1 or 2 seasons and there is nothing left to play for so i lose interest in the game. If i pick a mid table team it would take me 3 or 4 years to do the same thing ie winning everything competition, if i pick a lower league , it would just delay the outcome which is winning everything eventually . Journeyman mode is also not fun after u win everything with a lot of clubs. Is there is a way to play FM like some sort of save which will have something to do even after playing it for a good period of time.
Totally get what you mean, with FM having no obvious ways of having difficulty settings it makes it tough once things can get a bit easy. I find the only way around that is to impose rules on yourself to make things harder. One option is a Not The Top 20 save. The idea being that you take any club you want, but can only sign players from nations outside the Top20 in FIFA rankings. Obviously that'll change during the save which keeps things interesting. My personal favourite is a Building A Nation save where you attempt to build a nation's league up to be the best league in Europe on the coefficient rankings. I have a video about this save type on my channel if you are interested. ruclips.net/video/o1SBn5GgNlA/видео.html
Honestly if it's a youth academy save, then you won't be relying on scouting to sign players from other clubs, so i'd suggest maybe having some leagues on view only with the players from the divisions loaded. I'd say loading 110k players in this case would just slow your save with little upside
The only problem I've found with loading one league playable and then an advanced database with additional ticked is selling players is hard. No one is interested ever.
Sadly not, beyond adding and removing the leagues themselves and making them view only, the options midsave are quite limited. I'd love to see something like that added for FM24
I’m gonna use this setup with my Luxembourg save with a team called monsdorf I wanted to ask about homegrown players should I sign them when there 17 or 18?
Why can't I loan out my players to other Greek teams - they just aren't interested, even for no fee and 0% wages contribution. These are quality players who are being signed by top 5 European teams and would enhance the Greek league massively. Starting to think it's just best to run a generic loan farm, then make large sales which in turn can use to pump money in to other Greek clubs?
The ability to add in the national team players mid save would be game changing, I messed up the start to my save but I am not ready to quit it just yet.
I expect that would be quite a significant bit of work and a significant change to how the database is calculated.
How?
@@quicklyexplained3637 from the top of my head. It is FM button - > detail level - > adjust match detail levels
@@R.Mousasi thanks! How much difference does it make ?
Update the setup download link please its not working .
I literally view just the highlight of every match and not the match itself. what am I doing wrong?
this doesnt seem to apply to fm24 on mac
Just load up whatever you want and use cheat engine on x4-6
You can run 30+ leagues from 20 nations with 200k of players easily .
Been doing this since the CM days
what do you mean, can you explain what x4-6 means?
Hi, if i try to load your data in the game I cant find it in the folder? Im playing in german is thats why? does anybody know how to fix it?
One question: If you choose to play with 100K players database, is it also going to influence how smooth the 3d game works during the matches or only the “menus”, days processing and etc are being affected?
Hey Matt! Great video. I have a little problem with the setup-file you offered for download. I put it in the db_setup folder, but it does not show up, when I hit load in game. Any Ideas?
same for me
Same
Thank you 😄
Do use this type for your saves? Watching you from Spain
I've got old legendary players in my Chelsea save for some reason e.g drogba, wise etc. Anyone know why and how I can change it?
Does this affect the quality of "big clubs" in the long run? since the players dont have fixtures do the newgens develop normally?
Great video, what CPU do you currently have?
Any suggestion on good laptop to use. My laptop game speed is half a star every time now
I’ve noticed since using this setup in a save with Troyes, that I’m having hard time to loan/sell players outside of France..
How do you get all those leagues on the game? Whats the pack that you used?
When setting up like this I’m not getting all youth international teams (no u18s or u23s) my previous setup with all leagues loaded has these teams. Am I doing something wrong ?
i alway load every league in the game as "view olnly" and a few as 'playable". do you think this might affect processing time?
I did the same experiment and the one league with all leagues as View Olnly is MUCH slower that just the playable league by itself! Almost twice as long!!
@@billmiller2368 One has the burden of processing the players and the other league + players.
Great video, will need to start a new save, seems only have 6000 players no wonder why scouts return awful players.
Can you develope more on the journeyman setup please? Or link me a setup file
I cant se Any b teams or like under 19s for like any club
Is it just me or is this save file not working? it wont show up for me to load, i have tried it twice.
It's not a save file, so attempting to load it as a save will not work. It's a game setup file. I show how to load it in the video :)
@@Secondyellowcard yea its not showing up in the db setups folder as others have stated.
Who's here for FM24? First thing I noticed was Matt's weight loss, I had to double take!
Just watched a bit of the video, goddamn, it's much more noticeable than i thought :)
Well done! @@Secondyellowcard
@@Secondyellowcard excelling on all fronts, looking forward to what FM24 brings on the channel :)
Where do I need to put the file?
Thank you for the video and advice and all the comments which are super helpful. I’m very old school and first ventured into football manager with Championship Manager 97/98 which no doubt was detriment to my school performance! Can anyone please recommend a football manager game where it’s kinda old school as in buy/sell players, pick the team and off you go. Any advice on this would be most welcome.
There is a version of FM that is more scaled down. In both database setup, day to running of the club and less of the media stuff. It was called FM touch at one point I think and might still be. Used to sell together but sperate now I believe.
I tried it a few times. Useful for slow laptop, on the go or little time but still want some FM fix lol.
It's more like that old school CM feel.
Thank you so much for your help and advice.
Great video Matt!! I’m going to set up a build a nation save in Ukraine using these tips :)
what team you gonna be one of the big guns like shakhtar or dynamo or one of the smaller sides
@@ThePlayaJohn I’ve gone for Rukh. I find it better to go for smaller teams in build a nation save.
ok, but what about the depth of detail?
I can't believe you used detritus twice in the same youtube video
Video is great but what is detriters? I'm not sure I know what that means - something detrimental to the speed maybe?
Detritus is like dead material
@@JaBadaman Thanks! Wasn't taking the piss just really had no idea.
@@JaBadaman Ah so that's why Terry Pratchett chose that name for the rock-like troll in his Discworld series
I’m looking to start a Bilbao youth academy save. Do you think this setup would suit this type of save?
Honestly if it's a youth academy save, then you won't be relying on scouting to sign players from other clubs, so i'd suggest maybe having some leagues on view only with the players from the divisions loaded. I'd say loading 110k players in this case would just slow your save with little upside
@@Secondyellowcard Thanks for the quick reply!
Just load as many clubs/players as you can from Spain and France, and nothing else. That's where 99,9% of Basque players are
This is not possible on console, right?
This works for FM24?
The only problem I've found with loading one league playable and then an advanced database with additional ticked is selling players is hard. No one is interested ever.
Syc is the sickest.
I can confirm that I already do this for my saves and it doesn't slow the game down. Nothing really noticeable anyway
This is great
Anyway to tweak a save that's already been set up?
Sadly not, beyond adding and removing the leagues themselves and making them view only, the options midsave are quite limited. I'd love to see something like that added for FM24
@@Secondyellowcard this is me also - we`re all too excited to get started!
Does anyone know if you can do this mid save?
Nope
I’m gonna use this setup with my Luxembourg save with a team called monsdorf I wanted to ask about homegrown players should I sign them when there 17 or 18?
Why can't I loan out my players to other Greek teams - they just aren't interested, even for no fee and 0% wages contribution. These are quality players who are being signed by top 5 European teams and would enhance the Greek league massively. Starting to think it's just best to run a generic loan farm, then make large sales which in turn can use to pump money in to other Greek clubs?
very interesting
