Excellent tutorial, Daniel. Your precision high power magnification clearly made the distinction between the large and small dates and the specific planchet weights. The upper loop on the 8 and the curved 2 in the pictures captures the essence that distinguishes the small from the large date perfectly. By the way, on your recommendation, I purchased the very same high powered microscope that you use, and it's a game changer. Thanks so much for taking the time to expand our knowledge of numismatics.
this is such an insightful video! I had no idea the 1982 penny was so important to coin dealers. 1982 was a pivotal year for pennies because the U.S. Mint transitioned from 95% copper to zinc with a thin copper coating, making it the last year for full copper pennies. Your detailed explanation and passion for rare coins make it so enjoyable to learn from you. Keep up the amazing work!"
I've got coffee cans full of cents, a lot of them are from the early eighties. I need a scale and a scope and need to start searching! Another great video Daniel!
it does have a D and it is definitely a small date I had it on eBay but I was asking about 10 grand for it and they would not let me post it to sale said it had to be graded does it matter if it weighs 3.05 grams it's missing the other 5 to make it 3.1 grams TkS for info also I do have picture
I have a few 1982 d small print on and wight 3.01 grams does it have to be precisely 3.01 grams or can does it count if it still if over 3.01 grams because I have a few of those as well
@@smallzsturgell1134 they can weigh slightly over and slightly less than 3.1g there is a specific Mint tolerance but close to 2.5g then it is zink and it's just a common penny.

Bueller ... Bueller: Large Date, Small Date ... Large Date, Small Date (excellent Daniel, you make learning technical stuff fun)
Those 82 small date D's were discovered 8 years ago ! There could be alot out there but the odds of finding one is a million to one !

If it is a small date 1982-d and weights 3.05g I would have it authenticated by Pcgs it would be worth more and sell easier.
@@jerrydavidnichols6735 thank you again that is what I needed to know have a great thanksgiving
Thanks. I didn't know there is a ddr for 1982P sd zinc.

Fascinating stuff. I have that set

I have a 1982 d small date 3.1 gram Lincoln cent. How or who would be interested in a rare purchase?
Not until it’s graded as you claim
I have millions of pennies oh my
OMG ...I do have one 90% steps holy holy .how much is it..I'm up to a sale.
Has nothing to do with the steps.

Might just b added from oil. dirt, but over is better than under.
Zink will weigh around 2.5g so there is a slight tolerance to the 3.1g copper ones
@jerrydavidnichols6735 what if there weight is 3.09 3.08?
@@smallzsturgell1134 they can weigh slightly over and slightly less than 3.1g there is a specific Mint tolerance but close to 2.5g then it is zink and it's just a common penny.
I have two 1982 small dates and it is copper but it only weighs 3.05 does that still put it on the down side?
Needs to have the D mint mark.
One to look for but impossible to find
Why did the release small dates and large dates? Did the size of dates change in 82 halfway through the year or something?
I was near sir
1983d
i just found 1 1982 d weight 3.027
