This song was delivered as an emotional plea for acceptance and non-judgement as she was about to explore a new path--not right for everyone but true for herself. It was intended for the album, I'm a Rainbow, which was scraped at the last minute in lieu of a more RnB sound or less 'inspirationally motivating'. Donna and her record label knew a return to her roots would ensure a backlash and indeed, it did. This resulted in the early days of cancel culture, where her words were misconstrued out of fear of abandonment by communities shunned and demonized by mal-informed persons of faith. They feared that Donna's realignment with her roots would result is the same actions of other religious leaders at that time.
The words of the song, "the truth is I never left you," and "I kept my promise, don't keep your distance."

An amazing reimagined version of I'm a Rainbow has resurfaced and is in superb form. DCFMA is reimagined almost the same time as it's original sound. It's message is now fully understood and beautifully preserved in the version here or in its modern design.

Wow! What happened? She took the guts out of the song. So anticlimactic. State Of Independence was so epic. Was she on Valium here or something? I'm a big fan of Donna in her pre-born-again original disco era incarnation, but stuff like this?

Really? I thought she did the best most emotional version of the song. I like Olivia Newton John and Karen Carpenter, but I don't think either of their versions was as good as Donna's. There is also a dance remix of the song on youtube.

@@johnnymfan5065 I actually didn't know the two versions you mention. So I did a search and listened to the song covered by:
Karen Carpenter, Olivia Newton, Nicole Scherzinger,
Andrea Bocelli + Nicole Scherzinger (No Llores Por Mi Argentina), Patti Lupone, Sarah Brightman, Festival (disco version), Madonna, and the talented young singers from the show Glee (all vids here on yt).
Personally I was bottled-fed on the 1979 disco version which may skew my judgment on other versions. But I do feel that the interpretation there is very satisfying on the emotional level.
Let's face it: It IS a very emotional song. Not only do you have to sing it with emotion but most importantly with emotionS (more than one emotion that is).
I find the different renditions ranging from nice and pretty, the operatic tendancy like Sarah, and the more gutsy rendition like Patti Lupone and Glee. Madonna tried but doesn't have an operatic voice though she is backed up at Symphony level.
A problem for Donna Summer is the musical arrangements are nothing special. What did Giorgio Moroder do here? I was expecting an electronic version and I got a run-of-the-mill ballad
So yes my take is still that Donna didn't not give her best here. She used to be a gospel singer. She could give the song lots of raw emotion power. But instead it looks like they decided to make it a pretty ballad and Donna still shines because of her beautiful unique voice, but for me an opportunity was missed and high potential was lost.
In conclusion I think the prettiest voice is Nicole Schwarzinger. The most emotional was Patti Lupone. And my favorite performance and preference finally goes to the couple of singers on Glee (didn't catch names) and to the Spanish version with Bocelli. And a Special Mention for Olivia.
Oops, I forgot the Donna dance version you mentioned.
OK, now I just played both her versions back to back. From the get go I noticed it wasn't the came voice track. Different interpretation. And there was my beloved Donna belting the song like I knew she could. Seems she held back on the ballad version to prettify it.
Well now I laugh at myself for spending so much time on this. I can write a Wikipedia page on the subject... Have a good day, afternoon or night, Johnny. 7P

@@Seven-Planets-Sci-Fi-Tuber I thought it was the same vocal on the dance version. I will have to take another listen. Giorgio took out a lot of stuff on this version. The backing arrangement is better of Donna doing this on the I'm a Rainbow album.
